A Virginia middle school will be named after former NASA mathematician Katherine G. Johnson.
The school will change its name from Lanier Middle School – named for former Confederate soldier Sydney Lanier – to Katherine Johnson Middle School – named for the African-American woman who broke barriers at NASA and was portrayed in the book and movie Hidden Figures.
Members of Johnson’s family were on hand for the official renaming ceremony earlier this month.
Katherine Johnson died in February 2020 at the age of 101.
