(Washington, DC) — Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House is set to close for seven months for the construction of a new security fence. The National Park Service announced today the closure will start Wednesday. Pennsylvania Avenue will be closed from West Executive Avenue to East Executive Avenue. Lafayette Park, the north sidewalk of Penn Ave, Jackson Place Northwest and Madison Place Northwest will remain open to pedestrians. The six-foot-six-inch fence is being replaced by a 13-foot fence. NPS says the fence will have anti-climb and intrusion detection technology and is designed to mitigate security threats.
