DMV Shows Love for WHUR Toy Drive, Donating 2k Gifts

WHUR Toy Drive helps to keep the celebration going for 50th Anniversary of heritage radio station

Washington, D.C. – (Monday, December 13, 2021) – Nothing says the holidays like showing love and kindness for those in need.  The DMV did just that Saturday, December 11th for the 19th Annual WHUR Children’s Toy Drive at the Shops at Iverson.

The Toy Drive kicked off at 12 p,m. But even before the start of the event, a steady stream of people came in to share their good fortunes with others.  “I come every year because I remember as a little girl growing up in public housing and not really having a Christmas.  I don’t want any other children to experience that sadness,” said Denise Mitchell from SE.

The Toy Drive was broadcast live during the ever popular CokaLani Saturday show from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.  When the day was over, well over 2k toys and gifts were donated along with $2,000 in checks.  The day was made even more successful with the help of sponsors like FedEx and Giant Food.  Plus organizations like WOW, Corvette Clubs across the DMV, and members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

From bikes and scooters to dolls and trucks and lots of video games and board games too, it was truly a toy wonderland as WHUR listeners came by the dozens to drop off new unwrapped toys and gifts.  “It was truly overwhelming to see the level of non-stop generosity.  I know there will be lots of smiling faces this holiday season because of the giving spirit of WHUR listeners,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.

All donations were turned over to the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, SE Tennis and Learning Center, Mission of Love Charities, Women’s Wings Organization, and United Communities Against Poverty.
