Upper Marlboro, Maryland – (Saturday, July 13, 2024) – A deadly shooting last night in Upper Marlboro outside of Wise High School where a vigil just ended to remember the promising three football players killed last Saturday in a car crash. The gunfire left one man dead and a woman injured.
Prince George’s County police say the shooting happened outside in the 12600 block of Brook Lane shortly after 10 p.m. just 45 minutes after a vigil inside the school ended. The deceased victim has been identified as 24-year-old Shahid Iman Omar, Jr. The female victim’s name has not yet been released. Police said her injuries were non-life threatening.
The vigil was held to honor Minnesota Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson, Anthony Lytton, and Isaiah Hazel. All three men, former players at Wise, were killed July 6th in a three vehicle crash off Pennsylvania Avenue in Upper Marlboro. That accident remains under investigation and possible charges are pending against the driver believed to have cause the deadly crash.
Hundreds attended the vigil which ended around 9:15 p.m. Prince George’s County Police Capt. Sonny Batth, the acting commander of the major crimes division, said the department had officers outside in the parking area as people were leaving the vigil. Batth told reporters officers made sure the majority of the people had left the parking lot before they left.
The gunfire rang out around 10:03 p.m. According to Batth, officers rushed back to the school where they found the two gunshot victims. The search is on for those responsible. Police said a gun was recovered from the scene. Police are offering up to a $25,000 reward in the case.
