Biden Plans National Monument To Honor Emmett Till President Biden is set to announce a national monument honoring the memory of Emmett Till.
The Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument will be built across three sites in Illinois and Mississippi. NPR reports, one of those locations is Chicago’s Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, which is where Till’s funeral was held in 1955.
In 1955, the 14-year-old Till was abducted and lynched for interacting with Carolyn Bryant Donham in the town of Money, Mississippi. Donham, later confessed that her testimony was a lie. His abductors were later acquitted of murder.
Till’s mother was a true hero in making sure her son’s death would remain alive in history. She requested that his casket remain open during the funeral. The incident became a flashpoint in the civil rights movement.
The announcement has not been confirmed by the White House but reportedly will take place on Tuesday, July 25, which marks what would’ve been Till’s 82nd birthday.
