Japan Gifting Washington D.C. 250 New Cherry Trees

Japan is gifting 250 new cherry trees to Washington, D.C. The cherry blossom tree symbolizes the beginning of Spring.

The trees will replace hundreds of other cherry trees currently being removed due to construction on the seawall around the capital’s Tidal Basin. The cherry tree gift was announced by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during a White House visit on Wednesday (April 10).

President Joe Biden noted the trees also serve as an early gift marking the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026.
