We’re examining the message in the music. Music has always been more than entertainment. It has been the soundtrack to social movements, celebrations, heartbreak, and change. From Motown and Gospel to Hip-Hop, R&B, and Go-Go, lyrics have reflected the hopes, struggles, and realities of every generation. Today however, some say the messages in our music have gone too far—glorifying violence, degrading women, and normalizing drugs and reckless behavior. Others argue that artists aren’t creating the culture; they’re simply giving voice to it. So, is music shaping society, or is society shaping the music? We explore the message in the lyrics and what it may be saying about us.
