Calls for police reform are growing in Springfield, Illinois following the fatal police-involved shooting earlier this month of Sonya Massey.
Body camera footage shows a white deputy threatening to shoot a Black woman in the face before ultimately shooting her in the head while he claimed she was holding a pot.
You can hear the victim, Sonya Massey say, ” I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.” The officer responds, ” You better fu**ing not or I’ll shoot you in your fu***ing face”, before shooting her.
You can see in the video she wasn’t holding a pot of water when shot, but only the oven mitts.
The deputy has been relieved of duty, faces murder charges, and remains in jail pending trial. The incident has sparked condemnation and calls for reform, with President Biden and Illinois U.S. Rep. Nikki Budzinski speaking out against excessive force.
President Biden says he and First Lady Jill Biden, “mourn with the rest of the country and our prayers are with Sonya’s family, loved ones, and community during this devastating time.”He adds, “Sonya’s family deserves justice.
The victim’s family is being represented by attorney Benjamin Crump.
