The family of “Empire” star Jussie Smollett is speaking out about the attack against him this week. In a statement, his family called it a racist and homophobic hate crime and likened it to an act of domestic terrorism. Smollett was beaten by two people in Chicago who yelled racist and homophobic slurs at him.  We examine the impact of  this incident and the intersection of race, sexual orientation and hate crimes in America.
