Afeni Shakur, prominent Black Panther Party icon and the late mother of rapper Tupac Shakur, will be depicted in the biopic “Peace, Love & Respect, the Afeni Shakur/Panther 21 story.” The film is executive produced by actress, director, and writer Jasmine Guy, known for her role as Whitley Gilbert in the 1980s sitcom ‘A Different World.’
The biopic’s director is Jamal Joseph. According to Variety, Joseph was arrested along with Shakur as a part of the “Panther 21.” The film has full approval and backing from the Shakur estate. Details on the actor casted as Afeni Shakur have not been released yet.
Dina LaPolt, the attorney for Shakur’s estate, spoke about the upcoming film. “What we want to do is to take meetings with production companies. We would love to partner with ARRAY or Juvee Productions. I foresee a Black woman director, screenwriter, or Black woman production company [coming on board], that would be our dream. That would be our goal.” She also spoke to the significance of Guy as executive producer, “Afeni always wanted Jasmine to write her book, the Shakur estate could not imagine doing Afeni’s biopic without Jasmine Guy involved.”
