Issa Rae Was Asked To Add White Character In Her Shows To Make Audiences Care

In a recent interview with Mic Magazine, Issa Rae shared a conversation she had with a colleague in 2011 while working on her web series, The Misadventure of Awkward Black Girl.
She said, it was put in my mind that you had to have a white character to be a bridge and for people to care for it to get awards.
She was told to include a white character so NPR would write about her show.
Since that conversation Issa has earned 11 Emmy nominations and won one.
