(Washington, DC) — Democrats in the U.S. House have adopted an amendment to the defense spending bill that gives the mayor of Washington, DC control over the city’s National Guard troops. Governors are typically in command of National Guard troops in their own states, but the President controls the District’s troops. The issue became prominent following the attack on the U.S. Capitol last year. Leaders of the DC National Guard said former President Trump’s Defense Department took almost three hours before any troops were deployed to help control the violence.
