Metro’s Board To Hear Proposal On Automatic Train Operation

Metrorail has been guided by live operators ever since a deadly accident in 2009, but new leadership believes its time to return to automatic mode.

(Washington, DC) — Metro’s Board will hear a presentation today on a proposal to bring back automatic train operation. Metrorail has been guided by live operators ever since a deadly accident in 2009, but new leadership believes its time to return to automatic mode. They’re hoping to get approval for the Red Line to be back under computer control by the summer and the whole system by year’s end. Most other major U.S. transit systems do operate automatically.
