‘Purple Rain’ Being Made Into Broadway Play

The 1984 Prince movie Purple Rain is being made into a Broadway musical.

Like the movie, it will follow a young artist known as ‘The Kid’ played by Prince as he the Kid navigates the club scene and a rocky relationship with singer, Apollonia. He fights to rise to stardom while dealing with abusive parents and feuding with rival musicians. Naturally, the play will be packed with classic Prince songs like “Darling Nikki”, “I Would Die 4 U”, and the title track.

“It’s been almost 40 years since Prince’s legendary film, Purple Rain, took the world by storm and we can’t think of a more fitting tribute than to honor Prince and the Purple Rain legacy with this stage adaptation of the beloved story,” NorthStar Group Chairman L Londell McMillan and Primary Wave Music Founder and CEO Larry Mestel said in a statement to Playbill.

No timeline for the show’s debut has been announced.
