Suitland, Maryland (Friday, May 22, 2026) – During Military Appreciation Month and just in time for Memorial Day, WHUR partnered with Andrews Federal Credit Union and the USO on Tuesday to pack 1,000 care packages for service members preparing to deploy to assignments around the world.

More than 50 volunteers, including WHUR’s very own Bobby Gailes gathered at Andrews Federal Credit Union headquarters on Allentown Road to assemble snack bags and care packages that will be distributed to troops before they depart for their respective assignments. The effort was part of the USO’s ongoing “Pack4Troops Program,” an overall support initiative for military personnel and their families. Several service members were also present to express their appreciation while also rolling up their sleeves to lend a helping hand.

For WHUR, the event also served as part of the station’s continued commitment during Military Appreciation Month to honor and support the brave men and women who work every day to keep our nation safe.

WHUR General Manager Sean Plater praised the collaborative effort and the overwhelming volunteer support. “This project reflects WHUR’s continued commitment to being actively involved in the community — both at home and abroad,” Plater said. “It’s our way of showing love and appreciation for our troops and their families for the sacrifices and commitment they make every single day. This effort was just one small way for us to say thank you.”

WHUR added to the festive atmosphere by providing music throughout the event and distributing special gifts to volunteers as a token of appreciation for their time and service. Andrews also provided a special lunch for the volunteers for all their hard work.

The event highlighted the power of community partnerships and volunteerism in supporting those who serve our country.
