(Newport News, VA) — The mother of a six-year-old who shot his teacher in Virginia is pleading guilty to a state charge of felony child neglect. It has a maximum statutory sentence of five years in prison, but in Deja Taylor’s plea agreement, prosecutors said they won’t seek a punishment beyond six-months. However, the judge notes that he reserves the right to sentence outside of that. Her child shot his teacher Abigail Zwerner early this year at his elementary school in Newport News, putting her in the hospital with wounds to her hand and chest. Taylor’s sentencing on federal gun charges and the newest state charge will both take place in October.
