For Swizz Beatz and Timbaland — Grammy-winning legends in their own rights — hosting a friendly competition while fans and artists are homebound due to the coronavirus was about giving back to the people.

Missy Elliot introduces endless possibilities in her new music video for DripDemeanor.

“I’ve worked diligently for over two decades and I never thought I would be standing up here receiving this award,” Elliott said.

Her upcoming performance on the VMA stage will mark her first since 2003.

“Missy, I want to thank you for all of your trailblazing ways,” Obama said in a taped video that aired during the event. “Thank you not for just sharing your gift with the world, but for being an advocate for so many people out there, especially young girls who are still figuring out how to make their voices heard.”

“A lot of people don’t know a lot of records that I’ve written or produced, so that’s a highlight for me as a woman,” Elliott said in an interview with Associated Press back in 2016. Elliott’s talents have been shared with numerous songs that we never would have known. “I always said if a man would have done half the records that I’ve done we would know about it. But we don’t know all the records I’ve done for other artists.”

“When the ESSENCE Festival was founded 25 years ago, it marked a pivotal moment of vision and reverence — a critical acknowledgement of and investment in the power of our culture,” said Michelle Ebanks, chief executive officer of ESSENCE Communications, in a news release. She said it has set a standard that other festivals aspire to, and has become an annual homecoming for black artists from around the world.
