Viola Davis Reaches Coveted EGOT Status At The 65th Grammy Awards, Becoming The Fourth Black Person In History To Do So

As of February 5th, 2023, Viola Davis has become the third black woman and the 18th person in history to achieve EGOT status after winning her first Grammy at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

As of February 5th, 2023, Viola Davis has become the third black woman and the 18th person in history to achieve EGOT status after winning her first Grammy at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. She reaches EGOT status after previously winning an Emmy, Oscar, and Tony prior to this win.

Going up against other acclaimed, heavy-weight nominees such as Lin-Manuel Miranda, Questlove, Jamie Foxx, and Mel Brooks. The award-winning actress was awarded the Grammy award for best audiobook, narration, and storytelling for her memoir, Finding Me.


In her acceptance speech for the award, The Woman King actress says, “I wrote this book to honor the six-year-old Viola. To honor her life, her joy, her trauma, everything and it has been such a journey. I just EGOT!”

With this achievement, Davis also becomes the fourth black person in history – following Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend and Jennifer Hudson – to reach this status.
