Washington, D.C. – (Thursday, May 28, 2026) – After nearly two weeks of nonstop rain across the DMV, WHUR and NBC4 traded studio lights for backyard vibes – bringing food, fun, music , and community spirit to a SE, DC community with the kickoff of the Backyard Bash series.

All smiles here.

The special community cookout took place in the Hillcrest Heights/Penn Branch area thanks to the generosity of homeowner Marsha Williamson, a semi-retired educator who has proudly called the neighborhood home for more than two decades. Williamson opened her backyard to family, friends, neighbors, and the community as WHUR and NBC4 left their studios behind to celebrate the start of the summer season with music, food, dancing, and fun.

The backyard was filled with the smells of hotdogs, hamburgers, crab stuffed salmon, potato salad, and other classic cookout favorites as guests enjoyed an evening of laughter and togetherness.

WHUR brought the soundtrack for the celebration with music and good vibes courtesy of DJ Weezy, while Nina Brown of “Afternoons with Nina Brown” and Joe Clair helped to keep the energy high and the crowd entertained throughout the event.

And no backyard cookout would be complete without line dancing. NBC4 Chief Meteorologist Doug Kammerer joined in the fun while also delivering the perfect backyard barbecue forecast for the evening.

The Backyard Bash was designed to celebrate community connection and neighborhood pride while creating memorable experiences for families across the DMV. Thursday’s event marked the official kickoff of a summer-long partnership between WHUR and NBC4, as both stations plan to surprise and “crash” backyard cookouts throughout the region all summer long.

WHUR, Andrews Federal Credit Union, and USO Team Up to Pack 1,000 Care Packages for Troops

Bobbu Gailes with Troops at USO Pack2Troops event

Suitland, Maryland (Friday, May 22, 2026) – During Military Appreciation Month and just in time for Memorial Day, WHUR partnered with Andrews Federal Credit Union and the USO on Tuesday to pack 1,000 care packages for service members preparing to deploy to assignments around the world.

Some of the snacks to be packed for the troops

More than 50 volunteers, including WHUR’s very own Bobby Gailes gathered at Andrews Federal Credit Union headquarters on Allentown Road to assemble snack bags and care packages that will be distributed to troops before they depart for their respective assignments. The effort was part of the USO’s ongoing “Pack4Troops Program,” an overall support initiative for military personnel and their families. Several service members were also present to express their appreciation while also rolling up their sleeves to lend a helping hand.

WHUR General Manager Sean Plater praised the collaborative effort and the overwhelming volunteer support. “This project reflects WHUR’s continued commitment to being actively involved in the community — both at home and abroad,” Plater said. “It’s our way of showing love and appreciation for our troops and their families for the sacrifices and commitment they make every single day. This effort was just one small way for us to say thank you.”

WHUR added to the festive atmosphere by providing music throughout the event and distributing special gifts to volunteers as a token of appreciation for their time and service. Andrews also provided a special lunch for the volunteers for all their hard work.

NAACP, Congressional Black Caucus Call for Boycott of Southern College Sports Programs Over Voting Rights Disputes

AP NAACP President Derrick Johnson

The NAACP and the Congressional Black Caucus are urging Black athletes and fans to boycott public university athletic programs in several Southern states over ongoing voting rights and redistricting battles.

The campaign, called “Out of Bounds,” targets public universities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and South Carolina. Organizers say the effort is aimed at pressuring lawmakers in GOP-led states accused of restricting Black voting power while continuing to benefit from the success and revenue generated by Black student-athletes.

The boycott could have major implications for powerhouse football and basketball programs within the Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference, especially as recruiting season approaches. The signing window for college basketball opens in mid-November, while the early signing period for football begins in early December.

NAACP President Derrick Johnson spoke firmly about the organization’s stance during a recent press conference.

“We will fight with all we have in solidarity with the Congressional Black Caucus to ensure that we have representation, or if we don’t, we will withhold the talent that plays on the football field or on the basketball court, be they male or female,” Johnson told reporters.

The Congressional Black Caucus is also opposing the SCORE Act unless major athletic conferences publicly challenge redistricting efforts in Republican-led states. Meanwhile, Athletes.org CEO Brandon Copeland reportedly linked opposition to the legislation with broader concerns about political control and representation.

This is not the first time sports and politics have collided over voting rights. In 2021, Major League Baseball moved its All-Star Game from Georgia following backlash over the state’s voting law changes. The NAACP also encouraged student-athletes to reconsider attending Florida universities in 2024 over similar concerns.

As the debate intensifies, the growing intersection of sports, politics, and social justice continues to place college athletics at the center of national conversations.

Kendrick Lamar Deletes “Not Like Us” Before Drake’s Iceman Release, Fueling Feud Rumors

The rap battle conversation is heating up again after Kendrick Lamar made a bold move just days before Drake’s highly anticipated Iceman release.

Fans noticed that Kendrick’s explosive diss track “Not Like Us” mysteriously disappeared from YouTube on May 11, along with the entire GNX album vanishing from major streaming platforms. The move instantly sparked speculation online, especially since Kendrick’s broader catalog remained untouched during the temporary removal.

What really fueled the conversation was the timing. Just before Drake’s Iceman rollout on May 15, Kendrick reuploaded “Not Like Us,” wiping away nearly 468 million views in the process. The refreshed upload quickly bounced back with millions of new views, alongside renewed attention surrounding “luther.”

Many fans believe the move was intentional, designed to keep the feud front and center as Drake prepares to release an album already rumored to address their 2024 rap war. Drake’s Iceman campaign has leaned heavily into icy visuals, themes of betrayal, and subliminal references that listeners are already comparing to Kendrick’s recent moves.

Social media immediately exploded with debate over whether Kendrick strategically reset the momentum to dominate the conversation before Iceman officially drops. Regardless of intent, one thing is clear: the rivalry between Kendrick Lamar and Drake is far from over.

We have a very important conversation about mental health in the Black community. This is Mental Health Awareness Aonth and considering the recent, difficult news headlines, we felt it was perfect time to talk about what’s happening in our community. Keeping in mind that we may revisit this issue again in July, which is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. We don’t need specific month to address this issue because the need is right now for the Black community. We’ve assembled a panel of mental health professionals who are here to help us address the state of Black mental health.

This is prom season. High school seniors are participating in the decades-long rite of passage. Putting on the tuxedos, the dresses and creating memories galore. But what about doing it for the culture? Black prom culture… is it on steroids? Year after year, Black families in some circles are, as they say, “doin’ the most”, or “at a whole ‘nother level”. How much is too much, why and what’s the real cost?

HBCUs and Research

Howard University School Of Law Top 50

We’re talking about a major power move in higher education. Howard University is leading the launch of the Association of HBCU Research Institutions. It’s a first-of-its-kind alliance bringing together the nation’s top HBCU research universities. Here’s why this matters. These institutions account for nearly half of all federal research funding going to HBCUs. But through this new partnership, they’re looking to go even further… expanding resources, strengthening their influence in Washington, and accelerating their paths to top-tier research status. We talk with the interim president of Howard University and a key voice behind this initiative about what this means for students, for Black communities, and for the future of American research.

Black Wealth Summit: Finances and the Black Community

We’re making your money make sense. April is Financial Literacy Month, but for many in the Black community, the conversation is long overdue. Figures show the racial wealth gap is growing—now estimated to span more than 50 years. So… what does it take to shift that narrative? From demystifying investing to building networks and restoring trust in financial systems, our guest says it will take all of that and more. We also have a preview an upcoming summit happening in the DMV this weekend.

Mary J. Blige Faces Backlash Over Past Behavior, Apologies, and Touré’s Claims: A Conversation on Accountability and Redemption

Mary J. Blige is trending after resurfaced comments about her early career behavior reignited public conversation. The Grammy-winning artist openly admitted she was once a “monster” during her rise to fame, specifically reflecting on her No More Drama era, and says she has since worked to make amends with those she mistreated.

However, journalist Touré is challenging that narrative. He recently shared that he never received an apology from Blige following what he described as a dismissive and humiliating encounter during a 1990s interview assignment. His account adds a different layer to the singer’s public statements about growth and accountability.

The renewed attention also brings back criticism from Blige’s 2012 partnership with Burger King, where a commercial drew backlash for reinforcing racial stereotypes. At the time, Blige attributed the controversy to poor management and a lack of proper representation.

Now, with multiple moments from her past under scrutiny, the conversation has expanded beyond one artist. It’s raising broader questions about accountability, public apologies, and whether healing requires acknowledgment from both sides. While apologies can be powerful, they don’t always land the same, especially when the people involved feel they were never truly heard.
