Medical Experts Testify About George Floyd’s Death

Expert: Lack of oxygen killed George Floyd, not drugs.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A medical expert says George Floyd died from a lack of oxygen that damaged his brain and caused his heart to stop. Dr. Martin Tobin is a lung and critical care specialist from Chicago. He testified Thursday at former Officer Derek Chauvin’s murder trial that Floyd’s breathing was too shallow to take in enough oxygen while he was pinned on his stomach with his hands cuffed behind his back for 9 1/2 minutes. His testimony came a day after a use-of-force expert said Chauvin had his knee on George Floyd’s neck area the entire time that he pinned

Are Some COVID-19 Vaccines More Effective than Others?

By LAURAN NEERGAARD AP Medical Writer
COVID-19 vaccines rolling out around the world weren’t compared to each other in studies, so it’s hard to tell how they might differ in effectiveness. But experts say they’re alike on what matters most: preventing hospitalizations and deaths. Although studies conducted before the vaccines were rolled out found varying levels of effectiveness, they don’t offer apples-to-apples comparisons. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccine studies, for example, counted a COVID-19 case whether it was mild, moderate or severe. The study for Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine didn’t count mild illnesses and was done when mutated versions of the virus were a bigger concern.

The Rock As The Terminator?

The next big movie franchise for Dwayne Johnson? We might just see The Rock as The Terminator.

Two people who were wounded were flown to a hospital.

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — Authorities say a Navy medic shot and critically wounded two people at a Maryland business park before fleeing to the Fort Detrick Army base, where he was shot and killed. Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando said at a news conference that the man entered a business at the Riverside Tech Park on Tuesday, causing people inside to flee, but it was unclear if the shooting took place inside or outside. Lando said that after the shooting, the man drove about 10 minutes to Fort Detrick, where he was shot by base personnel. He says the two people who were wounded were flown to a hospital.

US Rep. Alcee Hastings Dies At 84

Hastings was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Rep. Alcee Hastings, the fiercely liberal longtime Florida congressman who was dogged throughout his tenure by an impeachment that ended his fast-rising judicial career, has died at 84. Hastings was known as an advocate for minorities, a defender of Israel and a voice for gays, immigrants, women and the elderly. But his impeachment remained a nagging footnote.

He was acquitted of charges that he solicited a bribe as a judge, but the House impeached him anyway and the Senate convicted him. In 1992, he won a seat in Congress. Hastings was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago.

Norwegian Cruises Asks CDC to Allow Trips from US in July

By The Associated Press
Norwegian Cruise Line’s parent company wants to resume sailing from U.S. ports in July. On Monday, the company asked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for permission to return to U.S. waters for the first time in more than a year, since the early days of the pandemic. Norwegian says its cruise lines will require that all passengers and crew members vaccinated against COVID-19 at least two weeks before the trip. The company says its safety measures go beyond steps taken by others including airlines, hotels and restaurants. Norwegian plans to start U.S. cruises at 60% of capacity and raise that to 80% in August and 100% in September.

Do you think TGT should make a second album? Which artists do you think should form a supergroup?

Man Asks Woman For Her Instagram Without Realizing It’s Rihanna

What would you do if you saw a beautiful girl and asked her for her Instagram handle only to find out the beautiful girl was Rihanna?

That’s what happened to a man who spotted the singer during a New York protest against Asian hate. After she typed in her Instagram handle the guy looks at his phone in shock, seeing that she typed in @badgalriri, then looks at Rihanna and says, “Is that you?!”

It’s not the man’s fault, however, Rihanna was wearing a baseball hat, sunglasses, and a mask so it would be hard to spot her. The video has since gone viral and racked up hundreds of comments.

One comment read: “Not recognizing her should be a felony but see when you don’t release music in five years.”

What would you do if you stumbled upon a celebrity without knowing?

Washington Teachers’ Union president Elizabeth Davis was killed in a car accident last night in Prince George’s County.  Davis died at Prince George’s Hospital after her car collided with another car near Route 301 and Harbour Way in Bowie.  That driver of the other vehicle, 68-year-old John Starr of Annapolis was also killed.

Elected to the post in 2013, she was a union firebrand and muscular advocate for rank and file teachers in the DC Public School system.  Contract negotiations with the DC government, Mayor Muriel Bowser and current chancellor Lewis Ferebee were often contentious. More recently, Davis was resistant to have teachers return to the classroom during the pandemic unless a concrete plan was for PPE and other safety measures were spelled out by DCPS.

Before she was elected as union president, the North Carolina native spent 40 years teaching in DC classoom. Davis was 70 years old.

Confederate General Statues Coming Down in VA

Virginia’s Supreme Court Approves Removing War Memorials

(Richmond, VA) — Virginia’s Supreme Court is clearing the path for two statues of Confederate generals in Charlottesville to be removed. The court ruled the state’s ban on removing war memorials did not apply to those built before 1997. That ruling ends a legal battle that has drawn on for years over the fate of statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Charlottesville’s city council voted to remove the Lee statue before the 2017 white nationalist rally in that city where a woman was killed after an activist drove his car through dozens of protesters. The statues of Confederate generals were first installed in that city in the 1920s.

Can I Still Spread the Coronavirus After I’m Vaccinated?

By MARION RENAULT Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — Experts are still studying how good COVID-19 vaccines are at preventing people from spreading the virus, but say the risk is low. The current vaccines are highly effective at preventing people from getting seriously sick with COVID-19. But even if vaccinated people don’t get sick, they might still get infected with the virus without showing any symptoms. Given the uncertainty, experts say fully vaccinated people should continue to wear masks and social distance in public and when visiting with unvaccinated people at high risk for severe illness if infected.

World’s Last Blockbuster More Popular After Netflix Show

BEND, Ore. (AP) — The Blockbuster video rental store in Bend, Oregon soared to international fame when it became the last such franchise on Earth in 2019. Now, a new Netflix documentary called “The Last Blockbuster” has spurred even more visitors to the unassuming location in a strip mall 170 miles east of Portland. The movie focuses on the manager’s day-to-day work running the store, which became the last in the world when the Blockbuster in Perth, Australia, closed two years ago. The movie by two local filmmakers peaked at No. 4 in the U.S. after it began streaming on Netflix on March 15.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials in the nation’s capital are watching the crowds as cherry blossom season begins in earnest. The distinctive white and pink petals reached full bloom last Sunday, about a week earlier than expected. It’s an event that normally brings in thousands of visitors and signals the unofficial start of Washington, D.C.’s, peak tourist and convention season. But Washington remains largely locked down with limitations on outdoor gatherings and all Smithsonian museums, plus the zoo, shuttered because of the coronavirus. The National Park Service stands poised to limit access to the Tidal Basin and its high concentration of cherry blossom trees if the crowds there grow too thick.
