Assata Olugbala Shakur, a central figure in the Black liberation struggle, has died at the age of 78. A former member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, Shakur devoted her life to challenging systemic racism, state violence, and oppression in the United States.

Her journey was as controversial as it was influential. Convicted in connection with the 1973 New Jersey Turnpike shooting, Shakur escaped prison in 1979 and later received asylum in Cuba, where she lived in exile for decades. While her critics viewed her as a fugitive, supporters embraced her as a symbol of resistance against racial injustice.
Shakur’s autobiography, Assata: An Autobiography, remains a cornerstone of political literature, inspiring generations of organizers, scholars, and activists. Her words and experiences continue to guide those committed to the fight for freedom and dignity.
“Part of being a revolutionary is creating a vision that is more humane. That is more fun, too. That is more loving. It’s really working to create something beautiful,” Shakur once said.
Her unwavering belief in justice, solidarity, and liberation ensures that her influence will endure far beyond her passing.
We’re drilling down on some of the top stories making headlines this week. Another mass shooting in the U-S, while on Capitol Hill, the clock ticks
towards yet another government shutdown. Late night TV gets back to normal, DC Public Schools makes moves to prevent fighting a high school football games, and closer to home, President Trump takes aim at WHUR’s very own White House Correspondent. It’s all on the table tonight at the Reporters’ Roundtable—news, context, and analysis.
Guests:
Keith Alexander, Editor-At-Large for Bloomberg Law
Ebony McMorris, White House Correspondent for American Urban Radio Network
There are major issues to discuss on this segment of The Daily Drum. There’s America’s latest mass shooting in Dallas, Texas, the looming threat of a government shutdown on Capitol Hill, and the tragic case of recent hangings in Mississippi. These are all critical issues demanding attention. Also this week, members of the Congressional Black Caucus are meeting here Washington for the annual legislative conference, tackling challenges facing Black America and the rest of the nation. We’ll drill down on these topics and more with Congressman Bennie Thompson, a Democrat from Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District and the ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee.
Tonight’s conversation is about preserving, protecting, and elevating the future of Black stories. At a time when historical Black facts are being erased and rewritten, Black Public Media has been a vital lifeline for Black storytellers. But that lifeline is now in jeopardy, with nearly $2 million cut from its budget.
So what do these cuts mean for the organization? How does Black Public Media plan to move forward? And what is the call to action for our community at large? We’re diving into these urgent questions with tonight’s guests:
Leslie Fields-Cruz – Executive Director, Black Public Media
Byron Hurt – Award-winning Filmmaker
For more than 45 years, Black Public Media (BPM) has supported visionary content creators and shared stories about the global Black experience to inspire a more equitable and inclusive future. BPM-supported programs have earned five Emmys, 10 Peabodys, five Anthem Awards, 14 Emmy nominations, and an Oscar nomination. The organization continues to address historical, contemporary, and systemic challenges that hinder the development and distribution of Black stories.
We are just about out of time, but here’s how you can help: Support BPM’s efforts and give to the Black Stories Production Fund.

ABC has reinstated Jimmy Kimmel Live! after a week-long suspension following the comedian’s controversial remarks about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The suspension came after major broadcasters Nexstar and Sinclair pulled the show from their stations, intensifying the fallout.
President Trump praised ABC’s initial decision, using the moment to call for other late-night hosts to be fired. FCC commissioner Brendan Carr also condemned Kimmel’s comments, saying they crossed a line. The backlash echoed a larger shakeup in late night, coming just months after CBS canceled Stephen Colbert’s show.
Kimmel, whose contract with ABC runs through May 2026, has defended himself, warning of a chilling effect on comedians if political pressure dictates what they can or cannot say. Hollywood and Broadway stars rallied behind him, signing an open letter urging the protection of constitutionally guaranteed free expression.
Meanwhile, ABC’s daytime talk show The View addressed the controversy after initially staying silent for two episodes, with co-hosts debating whether Kimmel went too far or was unfairly targeted.
Kimmel is expected to return to his desk this week, but the controversy has fueled new questions about the boundaries of comedy, politics, and free speech on network television.

According to ABC7, Los Angeles authorities have searched a Hollywood Hills residence where singer D4vd had been staying as part of an ongoing investigation into the death of a 15-year-old girl, Celeste Rivas. Her body was discovered in the trunk of a Tesla registered to D4vd after the vehicle was towed from a Los Angeles street.
The LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division is leading the probe. As of now, the cause of Celeste Rivas’s death remains undetermined; no official statement has confirmed how or why she died. Authorities are gathering evidence, including searching the home tied to D4vd, to help answer those questions.
D4vd, an artist who gained popularity on TikTok and in the indie music scene, has not publicly addressed the investigation. It is not clear whether he is being considered a suspect, a person of interest, or simply a witness. Investigators are working to establish a timeline, trace Celeste’s whereabouts prior to her death, and determine how she came to be inside the trunk of the vehicle.
The community is awaiting further details to emerge, and law enforcement has requested that anyone with information come forward.

DMV native Tramell Tillman has etched his name in television history, becoming the first Black man to win the Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his breakout role in Severance.
Tillman, a proud product of the DMV, has captivated audiences with his layered performance as Seth Milchick, balancing authority and subtle vulnerability in Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed thriller. His win marks a milestone moment not just for his career, but for representation in Hollywood.
According to his Variety cover story back in August, Tillman reflected on the idea of making history. “Do I feel a weight? No. I feel honored to join the legacy of these incredible storytellers,” he said. “I’m ambitious and would love an Emmy, but I’ve learned it’s not up to me.”
Now with Emmy gold in hand, the moment is both surreal and groundbreaking. Tillman’s win underscores the importance of diverse voices in television and signals a new chapter for Black actors in prestige dramas. For the DMV community, it’s a proud reminder that homegrown talent continues to shine on the world’s biggest stages.
In a recent interview, Jermaine Dupri reflected on his past relationship with Janet Jackson, pushing back on the idea that he “fumbled” the iconic singer. “I don’t know what a fumble is,” Dupri said. “I be trying to figure out why y’all don’t say she fumbled me. I’m not something that you just let roll down the street.”
Dupri stressed that their relationship was meaningful, noting that they were together for eight years. He also explained that he intentionally avoided producing music for Jackson to ensure his intentions were never questioned.
Their relationship ended after Jackson, who once expressed wanting to start a family with Dupri, reportedly had second thoughts following rumors of his infidelity. Despite the breakup, Dupri made it clear that he doesn’t view their time together as a loss but as an important chapter in his life.
Stephen Colbert received a standing ovation after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series, according to Rolling Stone.
In his acceptance speech, Colbert thanked CBS for the opportunity to be part of the late-night tradition and expressed deep gratitude to his crew of more than 200. “You are the pros, and I’m so proud to be one of you,” he said. Colbert also honored his late assistant and reflected on love, loss, and the state of the country.
The win comes as The Late Show approaches its planned end in May 2026, a decision some speculate may be tied to political pressures.
Hollywood has rallied behind Colbert, with fellow late-night host Jimmy Kimmel publicly endorsing him for the award.

The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards delivered plenty of star power, but also some notable absences. Kendrick Lamar, who entered the night with 10 nominations, did not attend the ceremony.
He took home only one award, for Best Cinematography, despite a standout year that included five Grammy wins for his hit single “Not Like Us.” In a recent Harper’s Bazaar conversation with SZA, Lamar reflected on balancing his public image with his private self, stressing honesty, vulnerability, and embracing both masculine and feminine energy in his artistry.
SZA was also missing from the VMAs, where she was nominated for Best R&B Song and Best Collaboration but left empty-handed. In a separate interview, she spoke about finding peace through spirituality and continuing to push past feelings of doubt in an industry where she still feels like an outsider.
Ariana Grande returned to the VMAs stage for the first time in seven years, captivating fans with two striking looks and high energy throughout the night. Her emotional acceptance speeches paid tribute to her fans, collaborators, therapists, and the LGBTQ+ community, drawing warm reactions from the audience.
Mariah Carey, honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, delivered a powerful vocal performance but faced criticism for awkward choreography, including a widely discussed fake slap. Still, she earned a positive reception for her vocals and legacy.
Lady Gaga emerged as the evening’s biggest winner, named Artist of the Year over Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. With 12 nominations, Gaga secured her place as the night’s top honoree, while Swift and Beyoncé remain tied at 30 career VMA wins. The night also introduced new categories for Best Country Video and Best Pop Artist, alongside performances from Ricky Martin and a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne and Ananda Lewis.

Cardi B has made it clear she has no intention of rekindling a friendship with Offset, saying bluntly, “I tried. Next question.”
Offset, on the other hand, shared his perspective through his single Move On, describing the track as a message of peace and closure. “It’s about moving on, like, peacefully. It’s all love and peace,” he explained.
He added that the song marks the end of their chapter together: “It’s time to move on, it’s over and done with. It was great while it lasted. That shouldn’t be the topic for either one of us no more. It’s a book that’s closed.”
While closing the door on her past, Cardi is focused on her long-awaited second album, Am I the Drama?. The project comes seven years after her debut, a delay she attributes to being “very picky” and indecisive about finalizing her tracklist. She recorded more than 60 songs before narrowing the album down to 23 tracks.
Cardi explained that rushing wasn’t worth it, since live performances bring in more revenue than album sales. The album will feature fan favorites like WAP and Up, along with fresh material, including Imaginary Playerz, which samples Jay-Z’s classic Imaginary Player.
(Friday, August 5, 2025) – Prince George’s County police have charged a Bowie man in the death of 19-year-old Decara Thompson. While police would not provide details of the manner of her death, authorities allege 35-year-old Hugo Hernandez-Mendez killed Thompson inside his Bowie home. Authorities say he is in the United States illegally.
Hernandez-Mendez has been charged with first and second degree murder. “Incidents like this affect our entire community,” said Prince George’s County Police Chief George Nader during a press conference Friday morning. According to police, detectives found surveillance video showing Thompson approaching a black SUV in the early morning hours of August 23rd. Police said after speaking to the driver, Thompson was seen getting inside the vehicle. Authorities believe the suspect then took her to his home in the 12000 block of Cambridge Drive in Bowie.
Thompson’s body was found in Anne Arundel County off Route 50 on Sunday as Maryland State police went to the area to investigate a report of a disabled vehicle. Police say that vehicle is not connected to the case. The teen’s body was located in a grassy area.
Police conducted a search of Hernandez-Mendez home yesterday and say they found evidence that Thompson was murdered inside a bedroom in the home. Detectives are still working to determine whether Thompson and the suspect knew each other prior to her reported disappearance on August 23rd.
The suspect is being held without bond by the Department of Corrections. Asked whether Hernandez-Mendez had any prior criminal charges, the Chief said he had been detained by U.S. Park Police in April on DUI charges. But was released pending trial.

Eagles’ Jalen Carter Ejected For Spitting On Dak Prescott : Will Suspension Follow?
Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting on Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, and now the NFL must decide if further punishment is coming.
Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter made headlines for all the wrong reasons during the 2025 NFL season opener. Just moments before the first snap, Carter was caught spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, resulting in his immediate ejection.
The act, flagged as unsportsmanlike conduct, stunned fans and ignited debate across the sports world.
Reaction to the incident has been swift and sharp. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith called Carter’s behavior “inexcusable” and argued that an ejection alone isn’t enough. Former players and analysts echoed the sentiment, labeling the move “disrespectful” and “total trash.”
Now the focus shifts to the league office. While the NFL has yet to announce any formal punishment, history shows similar incidents typically result in fines rather than suspensions. Players like Terrell Owens, Sean Taylor, and Marcus Peters all received fines for spitting but were not forced to miss games.
Still, Carter’s actions, highly visible, deliberate, and against one of the league’s biggest stars, could pressure the NFL to take a stronger stance.
Whether the league sticks with precedent or makes an example out of Carter remains to be seen. For now, all eyes are on the NFL’s disciplinary decision.

According to AP NEWS, rapper Cardi B is on trial in California over allegations that she scratched a security guard’s face during a heated dispute at a Los Angeles-area medical center in 2018. The case, which began earlier this week, has attracted widespread media attention, with clips of Cardi B’s testimony circulating widely on social media platforms.
The lawsuit was filed by the guard, who claims the Grammy-winning artist caused physical harm during the altercation. Cardi B has denied the accusations and is being represented by the same legal team that has successfully defended her in past high-profile cases.
The trial has drawn interest not only because of the celebrity at its center but also due to some unusual courtroom procedures. Jurors in the case have been permitted to submit written questions for witnesses, adding a rare interactive element to the proceedings.
Social media has amplified nearly every development, with fans and critics alike weighing in as snippets of testimony and courtroom updates trend online. Legal experts note that while the viral moments have fueled public curiosity, they could also influence perceptions of the case outside the courtroom.
The high-profile trial is unfolding alongside another closely watched case in California, a murder-for-hire prosecution that has revealed significant evidence against the defendant. The presiding judge in that case has been commended for maintaining order and fairness in the courtroom, drawing comparisons to the handling of Cardi B’s ongoing proceedings.
The Powerball jackpot has surged to an estimated $1.3 billion, ranking as the fifth-largest in the game’s history and the ninth-largest lottery prize ever offered in the United States, according to WEAR-TV. The next drawing is scheduled for Wednesday night, drawing national attention as hopeful players rush to purchase tickets.
While the massive grand prize remains unclaimed, one Pensacola resident is celebrating a life-changing win. A ticket purchased at Greer’s on Lillian Highway matched all five white balls in the most recent drawing, securing the $1 million Match 5 prize. The winning numbers drawn were 8, 23, 25, 40, and 53.
The Powerball jackpot has been steadily climbing since June, after no ticket matched all six numbers in previous drawings. With growing anticipation, convenience stores and lottery outlets are seeing increased sales as players try their luck at joining the small list of billion-dollar winners.
Lottery officials remind participants that the odds of hitting the jackpot are steep about 1 in 292 million. Still, the excitement continues to build, and millions across the country will be watching closely on Wednesday to see if someone finally claims the record-breaking prize.
