DC Halts Plan to Resume Classes November 9th

The DC School System will continue with distance learning and will not return elementary school youngsters to the classroom on November 9th. No new date has been set.

Washington, DC (November 2, 2020) – After much push back from the Washington Teachers Union, DC School Chancellor Louis Ferebee has cancelled plans to return some elementary school children to in-person learning for November 9th.

In a tweet this morning, the school system said  “we commit to supporting our students, families, teachers, and staff in our urgent mission to safely reopen schools. We have heard feedback from many in our community about plans, and we will use this moment to adjust our timeline and staffing plans for reopening.”

No word on a new date.  The change means students and teachers will continue with distance learning.  It comes at the District is experiencing an uptick in COVID-19 cases. The union had urged teachers to take Monday as a mental health break day.

DC Activates Hypothermia Alert

DC’s mayor opens more shelters for homeless as temperatures dip into the 30s tonight.

WASHINGTON, DC (Sunday, November 1, 2020)  –  As the temperatures in the DMV are expected to dip into the 30s tonight, DC is activating a plan to keep those living on the streets warm.  The city’s Hypothermia Alert  was activated today at 5:00 p.m.  A statement by the  mayor says the District remains committed to ensuring access to shelter during hypothermia season and doing so in a way that is safe during the public health emergency.

Based on the forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS), the expected low temperature tonight will be 36 degrees with a wind chill factor in the upper 20s. Hypothermia Alerts are activated when the NWS forecasted temperature, including wind chill, is or will be 32 degrees or below; or, when the temperature is forecasted to be 40 degrees or below, and the forecasted chance of precipitation is 50% or greater.

Access to Shelter: The District opens Hypothermia Shelters in recreation centers and other public buildings to ensure there are warm, safe places to be for anyone experiencing homelessness. Once opened, all seasonal shelters will remain open 24 hours per day, seven days per week, with reduced capacity for the duration of the season to reduce the risk of coronavirus spread. Tonight’s Hypothermia Shelters will be activated at the following locations:

Co-Ed

·         Banneker: 2500 Georgia Avenue, NW at 5:00 p.m.

Men

·         Salvation Army: 3335 Sherman Avenue, NW at 7:00 p.m.

Increased Outreach: DHS will amplify outreach efforts during the night to raise awareness about the availability of Hypothermia Shelters. Families seeking emergency shelter may also call the Shelter Hotline at 202-399-7093, or 311, at any time.

Transportation: There will not be scheduled transportation routes this year. On-demand transportation is available by calling the Shelter Hotline (202-399-7093 or 311) and clients newly seeking shelter will be prioritized.

Cold-Weather Pet Guidance: For all animal emergencies, including animals left outside in extreme temperatures, call the Humane Rescue Alliance at 202-576-6664.

Montgomery County will be doubling the number of speed and red light cameras next year.  Last year the county collected 12 million dollars with over 335-thousand citations.   In the last five years, the county has collected near 100 million dollars from its speed camera enforcement program. The new cameras would be located in residential and school zone areas.

Black Owners Sue McDonald’s

McDonald’s black franchise owners are suing the fast-food chain alleging it discriminates against it’s black franchisees.

(Reuters) – McDonald’s Corp was hit on Thursday with a potentially multi-billion dollar lawsuit by Black franchise owners who accused the fast-food giant of racial discrimination for steering them to underperforming stores.

The proposed class action led by James and Darrell Byrd, who are brothers with four McDonald’s restaurants in Tennessee, was filed by the same law firm representing 52 Black former franchisees who filed a similar lawsuit on Aug. 31.

McDonald’s was accused of placing Black franchisees in undesirable inner-city locations with high security and insurance costs and below-average sales, and driving many away by failing to support them as debts rise and profits fall short.

Jim Ferraro, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, estimated that McDonald’s has 186 Black franchisees in the United States, down from a peak of 377 in 1998, who own “700-plus” stores.

Chicago-based McDonald’s has taken steps this year to address concerns about its workplace culture and treatment of franchisees, including by updating its corporate values for the first time since 2008.

It has denied treating Black franchisees differently and said it wants them to succeed, while acknowledging that it wants its franchisee ranks to become more diverse.

McDonald’s has also denied racial discrimination claims in a separate lawsuit filed in January by two Black executives.

Happy COVID-19 Halloween

Voter suppression is real.

Ladies Night was lit as usual. We celebrated a COVID Halloween in costume, as we closed out Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We talked about the recent drama between Tamar Braxton and her ex beau, David Adefeso. Remember, he filed charges against Tamar for domestic abuse. You don’t hear much about men being the victims. We gave a hot line to call for anyone who’s living in an abusive environment.

We talked about the current state of tension in the U.S. surrounding voter suppression. As of Sunday, 11/01, a record amount of over 93 million Americans voted early.

Which also led to discussions about COVID-19 numbers continuing to grow. As of this date, over 9 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported in the U.S. That’s over 70,000 cases per day. We discussed how to prepare your home for another potential lockdown.

More Unrest Expected in DC After Man Dies in Scooter Crash

Protesters gathered outside of the 4th District Police station late last night.

(Washington, DC) — D.C. has erupted after the death of a 20-year-old black man following a police chase on an electric scooter. Protesters gathered outside of the 4th District Police station late last night. At least four officers were injured in the unrest after rocks and bricks were thrown at them. Authorities say one arrest was made. The anger in the streets is related to an incident on Friday when officers tried to stop Karon Hylton while he was riding on a sidewalk before he sped away. Officers maintained pursuit, but Hylton zoomed through an ally before police say he collided with a car. He died on Monday after being hospitalized for treatment of his injuries.

World Champion Dwight Howard Says He IS A Great Dad !

In the weeks since the Los Angeles Lakers emerged victorious as NBA Champions, there has been a lot of discussion around one the team’s players Dwight Howard. First, there were accusations from Royce Reed, Howard’s ex and mother of his child. She claimed that despite being in the same city as his children, Howard has made no effort to be a part of his son Braylon’s life.

The world is listening and today on the @FrankSkiShow with Nina Brown we’re talking about what’s going on….Keeping you in the loop it’s the Frank Ski Show with Nina Brown!

Today, Tuesday, October 27th: Sometimes you get it wrong, and I’ll never be too prideful to say when I do. I got it wrong about Dwight Howard. On Monday, we did a story that was circulating the internet regarding him being a deadbeat dad (side note: I also learned the video that was circulating was months old and posted with the intent to defame this man’s character as a father). I had some pretty intense things to say on the air about my personal beliefs regarding absentee parents. I personally felt triggered, and I didn’t hold my tongue questioning this man’s character. Well, I’m thankful to his best friend, Keven, for reaching out to me to defend his friend, and then connecting Dwight and I on Monday night. I had a long convo with Dwight, and let me just say this… this man ain’t no deadbeat dad, period. Is he perfect, no. Is there room for improvement, well hell, isn’t there room for improvement in ALL of our lives? Even as parents. Does he love his children, and has he tried to do right by them and their mothers (after our long convo and hearing him speak his truth), I wholeheartedly believe he has. My heart breaks for any child/ren who struggles with the adaptation of a co-parenting situation, especially a toxic one. It’s a burden no child should bear. Dwight Howard, thank you for your transparency when we talked, and thank you for calling into the show so I could publicly apologize to you. There absolutely is always 2 sides to every story— and when children are involved, 3 or more because their trauma is real. I appreciate you stepping out of your comfort zone to talk to me on our WHUR platform. I wish you nothing but the best and pray for you and your family’s peace. Police Shooting Sparks Racial Unrest in Philadelphia

Protests flare in Philadelphia after police kill Black man.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Clean up in Philadelphia gets underway after more than a dozen people were arrested and more than 30 officers injured in protests stemming from the police shooting death of a Black man in Philadelphia. Officials said Tuesday that 27-year-old Walter Wallace refused police orders to drop a knife in the confrontation captured on video. Wallace was shot Monday afternoon. Wallace’s father told The Philadelphia Inquirer that his son appeared to have been shot 10 times and had struggled with his mental health. He wonders why police didn’t use a stun gun. Police say officers fired multiple times but wouldn’t say how many times Wallace had been hit.

Our Season of Giving, Helping Those Less Fortunate

WHUR’s Annual Children’s Coat Drive is virtual and runs through October 31st.

WHUR is in its Season of Giving and we are asking for your help to shelter youth in need from the cold.  Our Virtual Children’s Coat Drive is underway and the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity are joining us again this year to help us with our mission.  My guest is Frank Griffith – Polemarch for College Park Sandy Spring Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

We know that things are different for us this year.  Typically, we would be out in the community with a huge coat drive.  But we are in the midst of a pandemic.  However, the reality is that the need to provide homeless and low-income children with new coats is still very much necessary.

WHUR is hosting its Children’s Coat Drive thru October 31st.  You can make a donation online at whur.com.  Help us to purchase new coats and other winter gear for kids in need across the DMV.

Tune in to Taking it to the Streets, weekday mornings at 6:15, 7:08 and 8:40 on the Steve Harvey Morning Show on 96.3 WHUR.

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

We hear a survivor’s story and share resources for those who are still experiencing it.

October is the month we honor the many survivors of domestic violence with the color purple.  They were able to escape the physical, emotional, even financial abuse at the hands of their spouses or partners.  We hear a survivor’s story and share resources for those who are still experiencing it, exacerbated by the month’s-long pandemic shutdown.

“Relentess Racism” Ends VMI Superintendent’s Tenure

VMI board says “with deep regret” that superintendent is out.

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — The superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute has resigned, the school’s board president announced in a statement Monday, a week after state officials ordered an investigation into what they characterized as a culture of “ongoing structural racism.”
Retired Army Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III tendered his resignation Monday, and the Board of Visitors accepted it “with deep regret,” board President John William Boland said in a statement.
“General Peay has served VMI as superintendent exceptionally well for more than 17 years. General Peay is a great American, patriot, and hero. He has profoundly changed our school for the better in all respects,” the statement said.

VMI, founded in 1839, was the first state-supported military college in the nation.
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, a VMI graduate, and other top Democratic elected officials sent a letter to the state-supported school’s board a week ago announcing an investigation into the school’s culture, policies, practices and equity in disciplinary procedures. That decision came on the heels of a Washington Post story that described Black cadets and alumni facing “relentless racism.”
The Post story described incidents such as lynching threats and a white professor reminiscing in class about her father’s Ku Klux Klan membership. The Roanoke Times also reported months ago on Black alumni speaking out about racism at the school.
Boland responded to the officials last week, saying that the school would welcome a review and pledges its full cooperation.
“However, systemic racism does not exist here and a fair and independent review will find that to be true,” Boland wrote in the letter, which a school spokesman provided to The Associated Press.
Boland’s statement Monday said the board would “immediately” turn its attention to the search for a new superintendent.
A school spokesman said Peay was not granting interview requests.

Washington Football Team Hosts Dallas

Dallas Cowboys visit Washington with NFC East in shambles.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys and Washington haven’t had this bad a combined record since 2001. Yet the winner of their game Sunday could go a long way to determining who wins the horrendous NFC East. Dallas is 2-4 with Andy Dalton now at quarterback after replacing injured starter Dak Prescott and hopes to turn things around. Washington is 1-5 with Kyle Allen under center after coach Ron Rivera pulled the plug on Dwayne Haskins’ development upon seeing a winnable division. Just like 19 years ago when Tim Seder bounced back from a collision with a horse to kick the game-winning field goal, there’s plenty of pressure in this rivalry game.

Ananda Lewis’ Holistic Approach To Fighting Breast Cancer

Health is wealth! It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Get your mammograms.

The last time I saw Ananda Lewis, we were both working at BET. One day, she told me, in confidence, that she had just come from an amazing audition at MTV! Well, apparently she got the job…and her career continued to soar. Next was The Ananda Lewis Show. The Insider. While You Were Out, and a few others television shows.

Well, now she’s on a different journey. She was hit with the difficult news that she has breast cancer in 2019. By the time she was diagnosed, it had spread to her lymph nodes. She pleads that all women get mammograms early so they don’t have to go through what she’s going through.

Ananda took it upon herself to do massive research about the disease and how to eradicate it from her body. While she has decided to accept some of the traditional medicine, her strategy is mostly an extremely extensive holistic approach. Extensive to the tune of 6 – 7 hours per day and it appears to be working. Thankfully, the tumor is shrinking.

She shared so much of her medical journey with us like how to make sure your body is operating as it should. Thank you Ananda Lewis! I believe you can now add “health advisor” to your long list of accomplishments.
