How To Make Budgeting As Painless As Possible

Automating things like savings and bill payments goes a long way toward reducing the effort needed to achieve goals.

By LIZ WESTON of NerdWallet
You don’t have to track every single penny to get the best use from your money — and most of us don’t want to. Technology and some basic guidelines can help you create a road map so you have some idea where you are going, how far along the journey you are and what you’ll need to reach your destination. Automating things like savings and bill payments goes a long way toward reducing the effort needed to achieve goals. Then pick a system that makes it easy to track your monthly spending, perhaps using a single credit card or a payment app.

Harris Prepares For Central Role In Biden’s White House

Harris is shaping up to be a central player in addressing everything from the coronavirus pandemic to criminal justice reform. Harris’ chief spokeswoman, Symone Sanders, says Harris has a hand in all aspects of Biden’s agenda.

By ALEXANDRA JAFFE Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — Kamala Harris will make history on Wednesday when she becomes the nation’s first female vice president — and the first Black woman and the first woman of South Asian descent to hold that office. But that’s only where her boundary-breaking role begins. A confluence of crises confronts the Biden administration, and an evenly divided Senate means that she will break any tie votes. Harris is shaping up to be a central player in addressing everything from the coronavirus pandemic to criminal justice reform. Harris’ chief spokeswoman, Symone Sanders, says Harris has a hand in all aspects of Biden’s agenda.

The Words of Martin Luther King Jr. Reverberate in a Tumultuous Time

What Martin Luther King Jr. quote still resonates with you today?

Looking back at Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech, the words still ring true in today’s world.

Reflecting on the words from King’s historic speech and the title of his last book, “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?” College professors, reverends, and filmmakers look at King’s words and find the parallels in today’s world.

“What’s going on in the United States, what we witnessed on Jan. 6, all has to do with a backlash to the fact that our world is changing. It’s going on here in America; it’s going on in Europe. We’re becoming a more intertwined world, a more multicultural world. That’s the trajectory of history, and there’s no going back on that. That quote completely underscores everything I’m talking about — a just world is an equal world, equal no matter what our race is,” said Connie Field, award-winning filmmaker.

In his sermons, speeches, and written word, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to the past and future of America and warned that if we as people didn’t fight to uplift the body of America, namely the poor and those without healthcare, then the nation would never be healed.

The Journey: “The Educational Priorities of a New Presidential Administration”

Dr. Wayne Frederick talks to Dr. Dawn Williams, professor and dean of the Howard University School of Education.

ABOUT

As we approach the Spring 2021 semester at Howard University and welcome the new Presidential administration of Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, it is vital that explore the connections between education and politics. Right now, we are at a critical crossroads. We are still in the midst of a global pandemic and continuing to work to meet the challenges to provide for our students’ educational needs in a mostly virtual environment. At the same time, the availability of effective COVID-19 vaccines means that the end of the pandemic is in sight, and therefore, we must prepare now for a post-coronavirus educational future.  On today’s episode of “The Journey,” Dr. Wayne Frederick talks to Dr. Dawn Williams, professor and dean of the Howard University School of Education.

Who Do You Trust to Protect Us on Inauguration Day?

The question raised after what we saw last week during the insurrection at the Capitol.

As we draw closer to Inauguration Day we’ve seen a huge police and National Guard presence on and around the National Mall.  Even as those thousand are here to protect the inauguation there are still questions about that very thing.  Those questions raised after what we saw last week during the insurrection at the Capitol. Two “First Amendment” areas will be open for demonstrators on at John Marshall Park and the Navy Memorial.

From the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, much of the  National Mall will be closed to the public ahead of Inauguration Day. This muscular response from the federal government and District of Columbia is part of the massive security crackdown after the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.  Two “First Amendment” areas will be open for demonstrators on at John Marshall Park and the Navy Memorial.  D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee says all communities outside of the downtown area will patrolled in the event there are protests there.

Ashanti Smith: Black Woman Attacked By Trump Supporters [EXCLUSIVE]

Per Ashanti’s #GoFundMe: Help Ashanti with Legal Fees

Greetings, My name is Ashanti Smith; I am a 28-year-old African American woman who lives in the Washington DC metropolitan area. I recently was assaulted, attacked and harassed by a group of Trump supporters on Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington DC on January 5th, 2021. A video has surfaced where I was surrounded by a group of Trump extremists, and I honestly feared for my life. The video makes me look like I am the aggressor, but it does not show what happened prior to my defending myself. People shoved me, tried to take my phone and keys, yelled racial epithets at me, and tried to remove my mask. I asked them to social distance and stay out of my personal space due to COVID 19. They refused, and I was afraid of being hurt and harmed. After being assaulted, I defended myself. I am now facing criminal charges along with being relieved from my employment pending an investigation. Which places me in a hardship situation at the moment. I am asking for support and help with funds for my legal fees and to maintain the essential things that I need to survive during this time. Any amount of help is truly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

DC Begins Lockdown In Preparation For Inauguration

The District is preparing for the inauguration of Joe Biden with intensive security measures.

WASHINGTON (AP) — All through downtown Washington, the primary sound for several blocks was the beeping of forklifts unloading more fencing.

There were no cars or scooters and seemingly no tourists Wednesday, just the occasional jogger and multiple construction crews at work. The U.S. Capitol that proved such a soft target last week was visible only through lines of tall, black fence.

Two blocks from the White House, a group of uniformed National Guard troops emerged from a tour bus and headed into a hotel as a state of lockdown descended on Washington that will last through the Jan. 20 inauguration.

“Clearly we are in uncharted waters,” said Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Last week’s “violent insurrection” at the Capitol by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump has “impacted the way we are approaching working with our federal partners in planning for the 59th inauguration,” Bowser said Wednesday.

The FBI has warned that armed protests by violent Trump supporters were being planned in all 50 state capitals as well as in Washington for the days leading up to the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.

Between the pandemic and the security threat, Bowser is flat-out asking people not to come to the District of Columbia for the inauguration. And at Bowser’s request, a National Special Security Event declaration was moved up to Jan. 13, a distinction which she said “puts in place an entirely different command and control structure” for security.

The NSSE status is normal for a presidential inauguration and other major events like an international summit or the Super Bowl. But it’s rare to start the lockdown so far in advance of the event.

Police vehicles sealed off a huge swath of downtown D.C. Wednesday, causing immediate traffic snarls. Starting Wednesday, Bowser said, anyone inside the inauguration perimeter might be stopped and questioned. Starting Friday, all parking garages in the downtown restricted zone will be sealed through the inauguration.

Bowser is also being pushed to deny lodging options to potentially violent protesters. The local Black Lives Matter affiliate and Shutdown DC issued a joint statement Wednesday urging all downtown hotels to voluntarily close and pay their staffs. In addition to the threat of violence, the activist groups say Trump supporters are a threat to the health of hotel staff for their general refusal to wear facemasks amid the pandemic. Several downtown hotels, including one which had become a favorite hangout of the militant Proud Boy faction, chose to avoid trouble by closing last week.

“Closing hotels completely for these six nights is the only way to guarantee the safety of hotel workers, neighbors, vulnerable and unhoused residents, incoming administration officials, members of Congress, and our democracy,” the statement said. “If hotels do not willingly close, we ask Mayor Bowser to extend today’s emergency order and close all hotels in the city.”

On Wednesday, Airbnb announced it was cancelling all reservations in the Washington metro area. Bowser said she had been in regular contact with Airbnb officials since last week, but did not specifically request this step.

“We are aware of reports emerging yesterday afternoon regarding armed militias and known hate groups that are attempting to travel and disrupt the Inauguration,” a company statement said. “We are continuing our work to ensure hate group members are not part of the Airbnb community.”

On the ground, much of the most visible security will come in the form of more than 15,000 National Guardsmen from multiple states, some of them armed.

According to officials, the number of Guardsmen who will actually be carrying guns will be limited. Some Guard members nearer the Capitol will have long guns, and others will have their sidearms.

It is likely that those closer to the crowds or on fence lines won’t be armed, but those up closer to the building may be. National Guard members operate under strict rules of engagement on the use of force. But generally speaking, troops can use lethal force to protect the lives of others and themselves.

Officials also said that while 15,000 Guard members have been activated, more may be called. D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee estimated Wednesday that more than 20,000 National Guardsmen would be active in the District of Columbia on Inauguration Day.

Officials are continuing to review requests from law enforcement, and some believe several thousand more could be brought in. Defense and military officials have been calling governors and adjutants general to ask if they might have people they could send, if requested.

So far, officials said state leaders have said that protecting their own capitols will be their top priority, but they still have some Guard members they will be able to send, if needed.

President Trump Impeached

We break down the day and look ahead at what this means for the nation over the next week, and the next year.

A difficult and historic day for America. Donald John Trump, The 45th President of the United States, impeached for a second time.  Something that has never happened before. It is a political battle that continues to play itself out even with only seven days left before the inauguration of Joe Biden.  We break down the day and look ahead at what this means for the nation over the next week, and the next year.

President Donald J. Trump, Impeached for a Second Time

Trump impeached after Capitol riot; historic second charge

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has been impeached by the U.S. House over the violent siege of the Capitol. He is the only president to be twice impeached. He faced a single charge “incitement of insurrection” in Wednesday’s vote after he encouraged a mob of loyalists to, as he put it, “fight like hell” against election results. The subsequent attack on the U.S. Capitol turned deadly and delayed finalizing Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory. Security was exceptionally tight at the Capitol for Wednesday’s vote, beefed up by armed National Guard troops, with secure perimeters set up and metal-detector screenings required for lawmakers entering the House chamber. A handful of Republicans supported impeachment along with the Democrats.

NEW YORK (AP) — Airbnb says it will be blocking and cancelling all reservations in the Washington, D.C. area during the week of the presidential inauguration. House To Impeach President Today

All is all but certain that President Trump will be impeached a second time.

It is expected that the House of Representatives will impeach President Trump today.  The House will vote on one article charging the president with incitement and insurrection, accusing him of encouraging the rioters who stormed the Capitol last week.  House members passed a resolution late last night requesting that Vice President Mike Pence invoke the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office.  Pence sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying he would not do that. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland will lead the Democrats impeachment case.  Five House Republicans say they will vote to impeach.

Now Vogue, You Tried It!!

The nation’s first female vice president-elect has been photographed for the cover of February’s Vogue magazine, and a vocal chorus on social media is displeased with the images. In the midst of a pandemic, in the aftermath of a riot at the Capitol and during the lead-up to a historic transfer of power that has become violent, what should have been a blissfully distracting, glossy celebration of a barrier-breaking moment has become a cause for disappointment. Not because of what was in the frame, but because of what was absent.

Now Vogue, you tried it!! 😒 Do you feel it was disrespectful for Vogue to use the most casual photo EVER for the cover or does it even matter? What would your expectations have been to celebrate the 1st female Black-South Asian Vice President of the United States??

Trump Takes No Responsibility For Riot

Trump has arrived in Texas to trumpet his campaign against illegal immigration.

ALAMO, Texas (AP) — President Donald Trump is taking no responsibility for his part in fomenting a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol last week, despite his comments encouraging supporters to march on the Capitol and praise for them while they were still carrying out the assault. Trump says, “People thought that what I said was totally appropriate.” He made the comments Tuesday during his first appearance in public since the Capitol siege, which came as lawmakers were tallying Electoral College votes affirming President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. Trump has arrived in Texas to trumpet his campaign against illegal immigration in an attempt to burnish his legacy with eight days remaining in his term.

Repost from @peninabrown • Well, the ‘Innanets’ have spoken and the double standard is alive and well, y’all. I guess it’s okay for a man to publicly date as often as he chooses, but when a woman does it, she’s everything BUT a child of God lol. Listen, I may not agree with Lori’s dating choices (specifically as it pertains to dating Justin and then Puff bc a father/son combo just doesn’t ever seem like it’s gonna turn out well lol… and then Future 🥴), but what I won’t do, is act like society’s double standard of what a man can do sexually vs what a woman can do ain’t some straight BS. Even if it’s not the way I choose to live my life, personally, I’m going to mind the business that pays me and try hard to be less judgmental. I wish them the best, tbh — and because it’s human nature that we all want to be accepted, heard, seen and loved by somebody, I hope they have found their somebody in each other. Life is hard & love can be complicated… yep, that’s all I got, lol. I hope we all continue to live our best lives… whatever that looks like.

Black National Anthem Would Become America’s Hymn Under Proposed Law

“To make it a National Hymn, I think, would be an act of bringing the country together. It would say to people, ‘you aren’t singing a separate National Anthem, you are singing the country’s National Hymn,” says Clyburn.

To Heal Racial Wounds, Black National Anthem Would Become America’s Hymn Under Proposed Law

In an effort to begin the healing of racial wounds U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., is proposing to make the Black national anthem or “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” America’s hymn under a new law he’s proposing.

“To make it a National Hymn, I think, would be an act of bringing the country together. It would say to people, ‘you aren’t singing a separate National Anthem, you are singing the country’s National Hymn,” says Clyburn.

The song has been an important part of African American history and is sung during graduations, school plays, church services, and Clyburn believes all communities should take part in singing the song.

Some people disagree with Clyburn and deem the song being named an American Hymn as symbolic and would do little to help race relations in America.

Clyburn drafted a four-page bill to get “Lift Every Voice and Sing” passed as the National Hymn and says it doesn’t take away from the National Anthem but will bring unity and will be recognized as an important part of American history.

Do you think “Lift Every Voice and Sing” should be recognized as the American Hymn?

Sales Of Unapologetically Ugly Crocs Soar Due To COVID

Crocs sales growth skyrocketed in 2020 with its fourth-quarter revenue at 55 percent, up from their projections of 20 to 30 percent.

Yes Crocs aren’t the most attractive footwear out there but arguably they are the most comfortable, especially during a pandemic and It’s the comfort of the Crocs that are believed to have made sales soar.

Crocs sales growth skyrocketed in 2020 with its fourth-quarter revenue at 55 percent, up from their projections of 20 to 30 percent.

The uptick is said to be because younger, mainly female, customers gravitated toward Crocs and because they are comfortable, plastic, and easy to sanitize, perfect for the current situation.

Not to mention Crocs partnered with Post Malone, Justin Bieber, KFC, and Bad Bunny with successful campaigns that helped raise the brand’s awareness.

Preparing for the Second Impeachment of President Trump

Why is this different from the last impeachment of President Trump?

The House introduced a resolution asking for the invoking of the 25th Ammendment by Vice-President Mike Pence. If not, impeachment proceedings could get underway as early as Wednesday.  What does this mean and what can be done in such a short period of time?  Why is this different from the last impeachment of President Trump?

How To Make Fresh Herbs Last Longer

For the past nine months, like many of you,  I’ve gained a much deeper love and appreciation for cooking my all-time favorite meals at home. Not only am I excited about experimenting with new recipes, I absolutely LOVE incorporating fresh herbs into all my dishes as well. Trust me, it makes a world of difference. My only challenge is trying to figure out how to make my fresh herbs last longer. Recently I learned a pretty neat tip that I’d love to share.

Over the years, I’ve learned about freezing fresh herbs in ice trays and using them as needed.

Also, I’ve heard about creating some sort of compound butter and freezing it to use while cooking.

Another tip my mom shared with me is instead of placing the herbs in water, you should wrap the stems in a damp kitchen towel, place in a plastic container or wrap in plastic wrap, and then store in the fridge. The damp paper towel ensures that the herbs won’t dry out and will keep them fresh for up to 2 weeks.

But this last tip, I never would have thought of in a million years.

Try placing your fresh herbs in a freezer bag and adding a metal spoon inside before storing in the fridge. Somehow the metal helps to preserve your herbs, making them last longer than normal. Crazy, right? Well I tried it and I’m happy to report, IT WORKED!

Try it for yourself and let us know if it worked for you too.

Inaugural security is expected to be unprecedented, featuring multiple layers of military and law enforcement entities.

This Month’s Paris Fashion Week Goes Totally Digital

The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode has told luxury houses they won’t be allowed to invite guests this season, after instruction by police.

PARIS (AP) — Ending the confusion over the fate of Paris Fashion Week, French fashion’s regulatory body has said that this month’s Paris men’s and haute couture shows will be strictly audience-free over coronavirus fears.

The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode has told luxury houses they won’t be allowed to invite guests this season, after instruction by police.

In a statement to The Associated Press, the federation said Monday that “we confirm that there can be no public gatherings” at Paris Fashion Week, adding that “houses can still organize ‘real’ runway shows with models broadcast live, provided that their events take place behind closed doors.”

Although Paris is technically not in a lockdown, stringent restrictions limiting movements are in place nationwide, including a 6 p.m. or 8 p.m. curfew. Repeated failure to obey rules can lead to a six-month prison sentence.

France’s second lockdown ended Dec. 15, but restaurants, bars, cinemas, theaters and museums remain shuttered.

In respect to Milan Fashion Week, despite the best efforts of the Italian fashion council to maintain a minimum level of live shows, top brands have also opted to show their collections with no guests, journalists or photographers present.

The Lombardy region, where Milan is located, appears headed to another partial lockdown.

Fendi, Dolce&Gabbana and Etro all have said their shows won’t include guests. They were among four brands planning live shows this round. Representatives for K-way, the maker of high-end outdoor clothing that is scheduled to show, didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The Milan Fashion Week calendar from Jan. 15-19 is much scaled back from usual, with just 40 brands participating.

Rihanna And H.E.R. Invest In Black Woman-Owned Business

“The demand for thoughtfully-made cookies, snacks, and treats is clear, and we are excited to continue to provide plant-based, safe, and crave-worthy foods to consumers,” says Woodard.

Rihanna and H.E.R. have stepped up to invest in a black female-owned business, Partake Foods. Forbes is reporting that Denise Woodard’s health-conscious brand was founded after the mother couldn’t find food for her daughter who suffers from food allergies.

Woodard left her corporate job at Coca-Cola to focus on Partake Foods full time. She delivered cookies and started a Kickstarter campaign and eventually received capital from several venture capital firms and JAY-Z.

Woodard’s first round of investments has closed at $4.8 million and her products can be found on Whole Foods and Target shelves nationwide.

“The demand for thoughtfully-made cookies, snacks, and treats is clear, and we are excited to continue to provide plant-based, safe, and crave-worthy foods to consumers,” says Woodard.

Dr. Dre Still in ICU Almost A Week After Brain Aneurysm

According to TMZ, doctors have been running a series of tests to determine the origin of the brain aneurysm. They’re also concerned that if Dre suffers a second aneurysm, time would be of the essence.

Dr. Dre is still in an ICU unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The Hip-Hop producer and founder of Beats Headphones were taken to the hospital last week after suffering from a brain aneurysm.

According to TMZ, doctors have been running a series of tests to determine the origin of the brain aneurysm. They’re also concerned that if Dre suffers a second aneurysm, time would be of the essence.

Dre is said to be doing well following last week’s medical scare, nearly 50 percent of those who suffer a brain aneurysm don’t survive and of those that do, they usually have permanent neurological deficits.

Do you think Dr. Dre’s medical scare will soften the war between him and his soon-to-be ex-wife?
