Opera Phenom Jessye Norman Dies

Jessye Norman, the international opera star, dead at 74

NEW YORK (AP) — Jessye Norman, the renowned international opera star whose passionate soprano voice won her four Grammy Awards and the National Medal of Arts, has died, according to family spokesperson Gwendolyn Quinn. She was 74.

A statement released to The Associated Press on Monday said Norman died at 7:54 a.m. EDT from septic shock and multi-organ failure secondary to complications of a spinal cord injury she had sustained in 2015. She died at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital in New York, and was surrounded by loved ones.
Norman was reared in a musical family. Both her mother and grandmother were pianists and her father sang in church, as did the young Jessye. She won a scholarship to Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she studied voice. She graduated in 1967 and received further training at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, and at the University of Michigan.

Norman also enjoyed success as a recitalist with her thorough scholarship and her ability to project drama through her voice. She toured throughout the 1970s, giving recitals of works by Franz Schubert, Gustav Mahler, Wagner, Johannes Brahms, Erik Satie, Olivier Messiaen, and several contemporary American composers. By the mid-1980s she was one of the most popular and highly regarded dramatic soprano singers in the world. She produced numerous award-winning recordings, and many of her performances were televised.

No. Virginia Student Lied About Dreadlocks Attack

Student Made Up Story About Bullies Cutting Her Dreadlocks

(Springfield, VA) — A sixth-grade girl who accused three classmates of pinning her down and cutting her dreadlocks is admitting she made up the story. The 12-year-old girl from Immanuel Christian School in Springfield, Virginia said last week three white classmates ambushed her on the playground and used scissors to cut off some of her dreadlocks. The Need For Black Student Athletes To Attend An HBCU

If you’re a huge fan of college sports, most of the players are African American attending predominantly white institutions. However, we have some talented student-athletes attending Historical Black College and Universities but the revenue is not increasing. Tonight, we discuss how can we encourage student-athletes to consider an HBCU. Other Universities are making millions off our young men and women. How should parents and coaches push the students to go another direction?

AUDIO:

Kerry Davis………Director of Athletics with Howard University

BACKGROUND

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/10/black-athletes-should-leave-white-colleges/596629/

The NCAA reported $1.1 billion in revenue for its 2017 fiscal year. Most of that money comes from the Division I men’s-basketball tournament. In 2016, the NCAA extended its television agreement with CBS Sports and Turner Broadcasting through 2032—an $8.8 billion deal. About 30 Division I schools each bring in at least $100 million in athletic revenue every year. Almost all of these schools are majority white—in fact, black men make up only 2.4 percent of the total undergraduate population of the 65 schools in the so-called Power Five athletic conferences. Yet black men make up 55 percent of the football players in those conferences, and 56 percent of basketball players.

Black athletes have attracted money and attention to the predominantly white universities that showcase them. Meanwhile, black colleges are struggling. Alabama’s athletic department generated $174 million in the 2016–17 school year, whereas the HBCU that generated the most money from athletics that year, Prairie View A&M, brought in less than $18 million. Beyond sports, the average HBCU endowment is only one-eighth that of the average predominantly white school; taken together, all of the HBCU endowments combined make up less than a tenth of Harvard’s.

Millennial Mortgage Debt High In DC

Millennials are on pace to have more mortgage debt than any other generation.
Nowhere in the U.S. is that more an issue than the District, with an average mortgage debt of near 451-thousand dollars — more than twice the national average, according to Experian.
Maryland ranked No. 8, with an average millennial mortgage debt of near 280-thousand. Virginia tenth at 270-thousand.
Experian notes that millennials with the largest average mortgage balance also have some of the best credit scores in the nation. District millenials are near the top with an average FICO score of 698.

Maryland’s HBCUs Seek Millions

The state of Maryland’s four HBCU’s seek close 600-million dollars in a settlement with the state. The state is offer 200-million in a final offer.

200 million. Maryland governor Larry Hogan says that is the state’S final offer to settle a case brought by lawyers for the four historically black colleges in the state.
The coalition of HBCUs – Morgan State, Coppin State, Bowie State and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore are asking for 577 million dollars “spread over a reasonable period of time.”  Their case was first filed in 2006, and alleges that the state has failed to dismantle vestiges of segregated higher education, including by under funding the four institutions and by allowing traditionally white state universities to continue creating new degree programs that were duplicates of programs at the historically black schools.  Lawyers for Maryland’s HBCU’s say they are willing to continue the court case if a settlement cannot be reached.

Legislation To Honor Alleged Hate Crime Victim

Maryland’s two U.S. senators introduce legislation to honor Richard Collins, who was killed while waiting for a bus on the campus of the University of Maryland.

Richard Collins III was stabbed to death on the campus of University of Maryland two years ago. Two days after being commissioned as a U.S. Army officer and days before he was to graduate Bowie State University.   Collins was not buried with military honors nor did he receive the posthumous benefits accorded a military veteran.
Now, in honor of Collins, Maryland’s two U.S. Senators have introduced legislation that would change that restriction.   The new legislation would afford death benefits, life insurance and other benefits to ROTC graduates who die before checking-in to a first command. Maryland representative Anthony Brown has introduced similar legislation in the House.
Collins was stabbed while waiting for an Uber with two friends at a College Park bus stop on May 20th of 2017.  Sean Urbanski will go on trial for first-degree murder in December.

‘RHOA’ Star Kandi Burruss Expecting Baby #3 Via Surrogate

Real Housewives of Atlanta star and business mogul, Kandi Burruss, announced on Bravo that they would be expecting their third child via a surrogate.

Contributed by Nadira Jamerson

Congratulations Kandi Burruss on Baby #3!

Bravo recently reported that Kandi would be welcoming her third child into the world via surrogate.

Earlier this year, this Real Housewives of Atlanta star discussed the possibility of having more children with her husband, Todd, but she was afraid of having to undergo another difficult pregnancy.

She said, “As soon as we had Ace, we knew that we would want to possibly use our other embryo’s, but I had a high-risk pregnancy last time, so that’s why we decided we would consider surrogacy. Todd and I are both nervous about it. I think it’s easier for Todd to handle or deal with because as a man he’s used to somebody else carrying the baby. But for me it’s a little bit harder to deal with the thought because I’m supposed to carry my own kids in my mind.”

However, during the RHOA Season 11 Reunion, Kandi officially announced that she and Todd would be using their remaining embryos to have another baby by surrogate.

RHOA fans are excited to see Kandi’s family expand in Season 12.

Rents are rising, and neighborhoods are changing. Renters mobilized to form a tenants union.

Tenant activism has trickled its way through the District in recent years, building by building. Renters have organized associations, implemented rent strikes and battled the threat of displacement. They have protested, signed petitions and contacted city leaders. But for decades, there has been no centralized effort to organize renters on District-wide issues such as single-family-home renters’ rights, gentrification and rent control. The new D.C. Tenants Union is vowing to change that.

Lead Found At 17 DC School Playgrounds

According to the District, no child has tested positive for elevated lead levels as a result of playing at school playgrounds.

There’s a new report out by the Department of General Services. It shows that elevated traces of lead have been found a 17 D.C. public school playgrounds. In fact, 6 had to be closed during the summer because of the levels.

An outside group was hired to check the parks. The move follows a push by a parent advocacy group who hired professionals to conduct a test at Janney Elementary School in Northwest where high levels were found.

General services say they spent the summer cleaning up the playgrounds to make them safe for the kids. According to the District, no child has tested positive for elevated lead levels as a result of playing at school playgrounds.

The Impeachment Inquiry of President Donald Trump

Impeachment 101. Experts discuss the details of the impeachment inquiry of President Trump.

President Trump is again criticizing the launch of the House impeachment inquiry into his actions.  During a late afternoon news conference in New York, Trump accused news reporters of wasting time covering “nonsense” during the UN’s annual fall meetings.   That notwithstanding, what does an impeachment inquiry mean for the President, Congress and politically… for the nation?  We’re talking about all of the moving parts.

House and Senate To Get Whistleblower Document

Lawmakers, staff to view whistleblower complaint

WASHINGTON (AP) — A whistleblower complaint that has triggered a renewed impeachment effort in the House will be available to some members and staff of congressional intelligence committees Wednesday, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The House and Senate intelligence committees have been working to pry loose the complaint, which was withheld from Congress and started a firestorm over President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine. Lawmakers were hoping to review the complaint before hearings on Thursday with Acting Director of national Intelligence Joseph Maguire, and they have been negotiating with his agency to see it. The people were granted anonymity to discuss confidential deliberations.
The complaint is in part related to a July phone call between Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Yet another 1990’s classic is getting a reboot. Warner Bros announced that a “New Jack City” reboot is in the works. “Snowfall” actor Malcolm M. Mays will be writing the screenplay, as reported by Deadline. Bill Gerber is also on the team as the producer.

Malcolm M. Mays is currently starring in the FX series “Snowfall” as Kevin Hamilton. According to IMDb, Mays is also writing “Flint,” a film about ex-con who gets entangled in a murder mystery set against the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. Mays also penned “Ferguson,” the movie adaptation of the book “Tell the Truth & Shame the Devil: The Life, Legacy and Love of My Son Michael Brown.” Bill Gerber most recently produced “A Star is Born.”

Lil Kim and Faith Evans have officially announced that they will be going on tour together.

This news comes as a surprise after many fans speculated they had an ongoing beef for years. In the past, the public believed that Lil Kim had an affair with Biggie, while he was married to Faith Evans. According to the Atlanta Black Star, the two ladies squashed all beef in 2016 for Sean “Diddy” Combs’ “Bad Boy Family Reunion” tour.

In a video originally posted on Instagram, Faith Evans says, “We about to do a ‘First Ladies’ tour. I’m putting it out there in the universe.” Many fans are now manifesting this into a reality. In 2017, Lil Kim was even featured on Evans’ song, “Lovin’ You For Life.” They have not announced any official tour dates, but fans will be patiently waiting.

Trump Impeachment Investigation

Washington plunges into Trump impeachment investigation

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump repeatedly pushed Ukraine’s president to investigate Democratic rival Joe Biden, according to a rough transcript of a summer phone call that is now at the center of Democrats’ impeachment probe into Trump.
In the conversation, Trump told his Ukrainian counterpart: “I would like for you to do us a favor.” He urges him to work with Attorney General William Barr and Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer.
The president’s words set the parameters of the political debate to come, with Democrats saying that it laid the predicate for an impeachment inquiry and Trump dismissing it as a “nothing call.” Yet the rough transcript clearly shows Trump’s willingness to engage a foreign leader on matters directly related to his reelection prospects.
The new impeachment probe plunges a deeply divided nation into an election year clash between Congress and the commander in chief. The probe injects deep uncertainty into the 2020 election campaign and tests anew the nation’s constitutional system of checks and balances.
Trump spent Wednesday meeting with world leaders at the United Nations, a remarkable split screen even for the turbulence of the Trump era. On his schedule: a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, whose contacts with Trump are now central to the impeachment inquiry.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who launched the impeachment inquiry after months of resistance, said Trump’s call with Zelenskiy amounted to a “shake down” to benefit his campaign. She declared: “Congress must act.”
Trump, who thrives on combat, has all but dared Democrats to move toward impeachment, confident that the specter of an investigation led by the opposition party will bolster rather than diminish his political support.
“Just so you understand, it’s the single greatest witch hunt in American history, probably in history,” Trump said during a meeting with foreign leaders in New York.
Republicans largely stood by the president and dismissed the notion that the rough transcript revealed any wrongdoing by Trump.
“I think it was a perfectly appropriate phone call, it was a congratulatory phone call,” said Rep. Liz Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican. “The Democrats continually make these huge claims and allegations about President Trump, and then you find out there’s no there there.”
The call is one part of a whistleblower complaint on the president’s activities, though the administration has blocked Congress from getting other details of the report, citing presidential privilege.
The complaint was being reviewed for classified material and could go to Congress by Thursday, according to a person familiar with the issue who was not authorized to discuss it publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
In the rough transcript of the 30-minute phone call with Zelenskiy, Trump encourages the Ukrainian leader to talk with Giuliani and Barr. Immediately after saying they would be in touch, Trump references Ukraine’s economy, saying: “Your economy is going to get better and better I predict. You have a lot of assets. It’s a great country.”
In the days before the call, Trump ordered advisers to freeze $400 million in military aid for Ukraine — prompting speculation that he was holding out the money as leverage for information on the Bidens. Trump has denied that charge and the aid package does not come up in the conversation with Zelenskiy.
Trump has sought to implicate Biden and his son in the kind of corruption that has long plagued Ukraine. Hunter Biden served on the board of a Ukrainian gas company at the same time his father was leading the Obama administration’s diplomatic dealings with Kyiv. Though the timing raised concerns among anti-corruption advocates, there has been no evidence of wrongdoing by either the former vice president or his son.
Biden said Tuesday, before Pelosi’s announcement, that if Trump doesn’t cooperate with lawmakers’ demands for documents and testimony in its investigations the president “will leave Congress … with no choice but to initiate impeachment.” He said that would be a tragedy of Trump’s “own making.”
While the possibility of impeachment has hung over Trump for many months, the likelihood of a probe had faded after special counsel Robert Mueller’s Trump-Russia investigation ended without a clear directive for lawmakers.
Since then, the House committees have revisited aspects of the Mueller probe while also launching new inquiries into Trump’s businesses and various administration scandals that all seemed likely to drag on for months.
But details of Trump’s dealings with Ukraine prompted Democrats to quickly shift course. By the time Pelosi announced the probe, about two-thirds of House Democrats had announced moving toward impeachment probes.
The burden will probably now shift to Democrats to make the case to a scandal-weary public. In a highly polarized Congress, an impeachment inquiry could simply showcase how clearly two sides can disagree when shown the same evidence rather than approach consensus.
On Wednesday, the Democratic-controlled House is expected to consider a symbolic but still notable resolution insisting the Trump administration turn over to Congress the whistleblower’s complaint. The Republican-led Senate, in a rare bipartisan moment, unanimously approved a similar resolution Tuesday.
The lawyer for the whistleblower, who is still anonymous, released a statement saying he had asked Trump’s director of national intelligence to turn over the complaint to House committees and asking guidance to permit the whistleblower to meet with lawmakers.

The museums founder, the Freedom Forum, is looking forward to continuing their mission of being “dedicated to free press, free speech and free spirit for all people.” The public will still have access to the Newseum through digital outreach, traveling exhibits, and web-based programs.

The Newseum, a museum focused on the evolution of communication and the expression of the First Amendment, is set to close at the end of 2019.

The museum first opened its doors to the public in 2008. Over the years, they have worked hard to increase the public’s understanding of free press. According to Variety, it was clear that the museum began to experience financial difficulties after they “announced a strategic review of its funding priorities.”

Unfortunately, they came to the decision that it was best to sell the building. John Hopkins University has purchased the property for $372.5 million with intentions of creating a  “world-class interdisciplinary academic facility anchored by JHU’s School of Advanced International Studies.”

Public Meeting This Am On How DC Handles Marijuana Testing And Employment

One bill prohibits marijuana testing as a condition for employment for city workers unless required by law. The second bill would bar DC Government agencies from discrimination based on city workers use of medical marijuana.

The Mayor of the District of Columbia has made a few changes to the guidelines on marijuana use and those employed in the city to work together with new decriminalization laws.

The change means thousands who work in DC Government can use marijuana for recreational or medical reason without it costing their job.

Adam Eidinger with DC Marijuana Justice sees things differently. He feels the current rules are so broad that they still leave several workers vulnerable to losing their jobs.

This morning at 11 am the City Council will hold a public hearing on how the District handles marijuana testing. There are two competing bills. The Committee on Labor & Workforce Development will hold a Public Hearing on the following Legislation:

B23-0266, the “Prohibition of Marijuana Testing Act of 2019”
B23-0309, the “Medical Marijuana Program Patient Employment Protection Amendment Act of 2019”

House Speaker Pelosi Announce Impeachment Inquiry

Pelosi Launches Formal Impeachment Inquiry Into Trump

(Washington, DC) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is launching a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump. Pelosi has been cool to the idea of impeachment but that changed because of the growing controversy over President Trump and Ukraine. She accused Trump of pressuring a foreign government to investigate former VP Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Hunter Biden had some business dealings with Ukraine. Pelosi accused Trump of undermining national security and of committing a breach of his constitutional responsibility.

Emmett Till Investigation Continues

Emmett Till inquiry continues; 6 other cold cases closed

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The government is still investigating the brutal slaying of a black teenager that helped spur the civil rights movement more than 60 years ago.
A Justice Department report issued to Congress about civil rights cold case investigations lists the 1955 slaying of 14-year-old Emmett Till as being among the unit’s active cases. Till, who was from Chicago, was abducted and beaten to death hours after he whistled at a white woman while visiting Mississippi. His body was found in a river days later.

The investigation, closed in 2007, was reopened after a book published two years ago indicated a key witness had lied.
A cousin who was with Till the night he was abducted said he was encouraged that the case is still under review but anxious for a resolution.
“We want them to go ahead and do something,” said the Rev. Wheeler Parker, 80. “What is the holdup?”
The Justice Department refused comment in emails sent Monday and Tuesday.
The department has closed its investigations into six other apparently racially motivated killings dating from 1940 to 1973 because authorities have been unable to make any headway in them, according to the report, which was posted to a Justice Department website with no announcement. In each case, suspects or witnesses died or the law prohibited charges against people who had already been tried and acquitted.
The government’s report is required under a law named for Till, whose slaying incensed the nation and has been credited with helping build support for civil rights.
Till was abducted from a relatives’ home after whistling at a white woman, Carolyn Bryant Donham, at a country store in Money, Mississippi.
Bryant’s then-husband Roy Bryant and his half brother, J.W. Milam, both white, were charged with murder but acquitted by an all-white jury. The men later confessed to the crime in a magazine interview but weren’t retried. Both have since died.
In the 2017 book “The Blood of Emmett Till,” author Timothy B. Tyson quoted Donham as saying she wasn’t truthful when she claimed Till grabbed her, whistled and made sexual advances.
After publication of the book, Tyson said FBI agents called him and he turned over interview recordings and other research materials. Parker, who was with Till at the store and later when he was kidnapped, said he also has spoken with investigators since the case was reopened.
Another cousin of Till, Deborah Watts, said the family hasn’t had any contact with Donham.
“I would have a conversation with her,” Watts said. “The truth needs to be told. I think Carolyn holds the key to that.”
The report doesn’t provide any update on the Till investigation or indicate when it might conclude. The fact that the case is still open means new charges could be brought, but Parker said he doesn’t expect much.
“At least they are touching it, and values have changed,” he said. “At least America has reached the point where they will investigate and you can’t go out and just kill people.”
The report said cold case investigators were ending reviews of the deaths of Elbert Williams in Brownsville, Tennessee, in 1940; Dan Carter Sanders in Johnston Township, North Carolina, in 1946; Peter Francis in Perry, Maine, in 1965; Lee Culbreath in Portland, Arkansas, in 1965; John Thomas Jr. in West Point, Mississippi, in 1970; and Milton Lee Scott in 1973 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. All the victims were black except Culbreath, who was a member of the Passamaquoddy Indian tribe.
The report said federal agents fatally shot Scott during an attempted arrest and there was no new evidence to support bringing charges.

Trump To Release Ukraine Transcript

Trump says transcript of Ukraine conversation to be released.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he has directed the release on Wednesday of the “unredacted” transcript of his July phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Trump has acknowledged that he discussed former Vice President Joe Biden in the call.
Trump tweets Tuesday that “You will see it was a very friendly and totally appropriate call. No pressure.”
Trump’s reference to Biden on the call raised questions about whether the president improperly used his office to pressure another country as a way of hurting one of his chief Democratic rivals.
On Monday, it was reported that Trump had ordered his staff to freeze nearly $400 million in aid to Ukraine a few days before a phone call with Zelenskiy
The call is at the center of an intelligence whistle-blower complaint.

Winfrey Picks Ta-Nehisi Coates Novel For Her Book Club

“I was just as surprised as anybody. I pretty much write for myself and the only people I think about are my wife and my editor,” says Coates, whose novel is her latest book club pick. “I was really happy (about the news from Winfrey). But I think the most encouraging part was that she’s a reader. It was clear from the conversation that she’s a reader. This is not a marketing ploy. There’s nothing to be cynical about.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Ta-Nehisi Coates’ first novel, “The Water Dancer,” has been a long and eventful journey.

Begun a decade ago, his chronicle of a slave with an extraordinary memory who joins the Underground Railroad is the result of countless drafts, a shift from multiple narrators to a single voice, some needed advice from fellow writers and hundreds of thousands of words discarded. Coates’ research ranged from reading interviews with ex-slaves and consulting a 19th-century Farmer’s Almanac — books duly pictured on his Instagram account — to his numerous and revelatory visits to former plantations.

And then came that call from Oprah Winfrey.

Winfrey announced Monday that she chose “The Water Dancer” to formally begin her new book club partnership with Apple, for which she plans a selection every other month. In October, she will interview Coates before a live audience at Apple Carnegie Library in Washington, D.C., a conversation that will air Nov. 1 on Apple TV Plus, the new streaming service. During a recent telephone interview with The Associated Press, Winfrey became tearful as she described the novel’s emotional impact, how it captured the devastation and resilience of those enslaved.

“I have not felt this way about a book since ‘Beloved,’” Winfrey said of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by her friend and literary idol Toni Morrison, who died in August.

The 43-year-old Coates spoke to The Associated Press during a recent afternoon at a SoHo cafe, where he drank strong iced coffee and received the occasional greeting from a friend or fellow customer. He said that he began the novel after completing his first book, the memoir “The Beautiful Struggle,” and acting on editor Chris Jackson’s suggestion that he try fiction. Jackson told the AP in a recent statement that “The Beautiful Struggle” demonstrated Coates’ “ability to dive so deeply and imaginatively into a character’s interior life and invent an idiom to tell the story that was more Joyce-ian than journalistic.” Coates, who had been reading extensively about the Civil War at the time, wanted to open readers to the “inner lives of enslaved black folks,” a “thriller” that would also dramatize the most profound questions of freedom and identity.
