Trump Indicted By New York Grand Jury

Donald Trump first ex-president charged with a crime after being indicted Thursday by a New York grand jury.

(Thursday, March 30, 2023) – Former President Donald Trump was indicted today by a Manhattan grand jury, becoming the first ex-president to face a criminal charge.  The indictment centers around alleged hush money payments made during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign to silence claims of an extramarital sexual encounter.

The former president has vigorously denied any wrongdoing and has called the investigation a witch-hunt.  A spokesperson for the Manhattan district attorney’s office confirmed the indictment and said prosecutors had reached out to Trump’s defense team to arrange a surrender.

In a statement Thursday confirming the charges, Trump’s defense lawyers Susan Necheles and Joseph Tacopina said Trump “did not commit any crime.  We will vigorously fight this political prosecution in court.”

Denver School Shooting

One of the administrators was critically injured and the second was in stable condition, Police Chief Ron Thomas said.

DENVER (AP) — Two school administrators were shot at a Denver high school Wednesday morning after a gun was found during a search of a student, authorities said.
Denver police Chief Ron Thomas said the shooting occurred during a “security search” of a student based on past behavior — “a regular protocol with this student” — that detected a gun.

The juvenile suspect remained at large and the gun was not immediately recovered following the shooting at East High School at about 10 a.m., the Denver Police Department said.

One of the administrators was critically injured and the second was in stable condition, Police Chief Ron Thomas said.

The victims were taken to area hospitals.

East High School, not far from downtown near a busy street that cuts through the city, was placed on lock-down as police investigated the shooting.

It was unclear if the shooting happened inside or outside the school. Denver Public School confirmed the victims were administrators.

Earlier this month students from the school skipped class and and marched to Colorado’s state Capitol to demand stricter gun laws, following the death of a fellow student who was shot while sitting in a car near school.

Viola Davis Was Vital In Getting Michael Jordan’s Approval For ‘Air’

Ben Affleck recently shared that Viola Davis was a key component in convincing Michael Jordan to approve the movie Air.

Ben Affleck recently shared that Viola Davis was a key component in convincing Michael Jordan to approve the movie Air.

Ben said of MJ’s requirements, “I had a chance to sit down with Michael Jordan because I just wasn’t going to make this movie without asking him, ‘What matters to you?’ Interestingly, and tellingly, he had a few things that mattered. One of them was that Howard White needed to be in the movie.”

He continued, “I got the script and then had the chance again to talk to Michael. Michael Jordan, for those of you who don’t know, is one of the most intimidating, impressive men you’ll ever see in your life. He told me about his father. And then he talked about his mother. It was the first time I saw this look cross his face. It was a look of reverence, of awe, of love, gratitude, and innocence. He said, ‘None of this would have ever happened without my mother.’ I said, ‘Who would you like to play your mom?’ He said, ‘Well, it has to be Viola Davis.'”

He added, “That’s like saying, ‘Can I play basketball on your court?’ ‘Yeah, if you get Michael Jordan.’ Viola Davis is the best actor I’ve ever seen. This is a hard business. It’s hard to know if you’re successful. It’s hard to know if you’ve accomplished something. But honest to God, I always felt that if I was a director one day, and I had Viola Davis in a movie, that would really be something. That would mean the world to me. And it does.”

Ruth Carter Makes History As The First Black Woman To Win Two Oscars

Ruth E. Carter has just made history as the first Black woman to win two Oscars for her outstanding work on the “Black Panther” films.

By Brianna Theophile, @itsbriannat

Ruth E. Carter has just made history as the first Black woman to win two Oscars for her outstanding work on the “Black Panther” films.

At the 95th Academy Awards this past Sunday night, she won the award for best costume design for the sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. She’s previously
made history as the first Black person to win in the category in 2018 for her work on the first film, “Black Panther”.

At this year’s awards, only 6 people of color were nominated – for Best CostumeDesign, Best Original Song, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Visual Effects – out of 23 competing categories.

Additionally, since the award show’s inception, only four other Black Oscar winners have won multiple awards in competing categories; these include actors Denzel Washington and Mahershala Ali and sound mixers Willie D. Burton and Russell Williams II.

Carter won against designers from the films “Everything Everywhere All At Once”, “Babylon”, “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris”, and “Elvis”. In her heartfelt acceptance speech, she paid tribute to both Chadwick Boseman, the first film’s star who tragically passed away in 2020, and to her mother who very recently
passed at the age of 101.

“Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman. She endures, she loves, and she overcomes, she is every woman in this film. She is my mother,” she said in her speech on Sunday night. “Chadwick, please take care of mom.” Carter played an integral role in breathing life into the world of Wakanda through the outstanding costuming and styling of the characters. She says that working on “Wakanda Forever” was one of the most challenging projects of her career, as she was tasked with molding many of the costumes to work underwater, a challenging feat that she was able to overcome.

As said by Carter herself, she’s pulled herself from the bootstraps to get to where she’s at today.

“I started in a single parent household. I wanted to be a costume designer. I studied. I scraped. I struggled with adversity in an industry that sometimes didn’t look like me. And I endured.” Regarding her win, she also says, “I hope this opens the door for others … that they can win an Oscar, too.”

The Official Trailer For “The Little Mermaid” Remake Makes A Splash At This Year’s Oscars

The official trailer for the 1985 remake film The Little Mermaid has officially debuted at this year’s 95th Oscars telecast and has received an overall positive response.

By Brianna Theophile, @itsbriannat

The official trailer for the 1985 remake film The Little Mermaid has officially debuted at this year’s 95th Oscars telecast and has received an overall positive response.

The film’s two costars, Halle Bailey playing Ariel and Melissa McCarthy playing Ursula, came together to present the trailer during the award show for the very first time.

Longtime fans of the franchise were certainly satisfied, as the trailer featured plenty of iconic moments from the original film, and it even showcased brief snippets of highly anticipated musical numbers, including “Part of Your World”.

Directed by Rob Marshall, the remake will also introduce four new songs, with lyrics penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda as well as Oscar award winner Alan Menken for his work on the original 1985 film.

“I’m so excited for the release. I feel like I’ve been waiting for so long — we’ve been talking about it for a long time, but now that the rollout’s starting, I’m really grateful that everyone’s gonna get to see,” said Bailey. “I hope everyone likes it. We’ll see.”

The film is set to premiere in theaters on May 26th.

Howard Softball Coach Stands Up Against Her Team’s Mistreatment, Resulting In Her Suspension

Howard University softball coach, Tori Tyson, refuses to stay silent after the mistreatment of her athletes during a game visiting the University of California-Irvine on March 4th, 2023, earlier this month, which resulted in her later suspension.

By Brianna Theophile, @itsbriannat

Howard University softball coach, Tori Tyson, refuses to stay silent after the mistreatment of her athletes during a game visiting the University of California-Irvine on March 4th, 2023, earlier this month, which resulted in her later suspension. She was initially thrown out of the game after speaking up for her team against this
treatment by an umpire, and is now undergoing a suspension for speaking out. She is now petitioning the NCAA because of this.

Tyson explains her reasoning in a series of videos and tweets, where she says the home plate umpire did not allow her players enough time to warm up between innings. According to her, what really frustrated her was a comment made by the umpire to her freshman catcher who was unaware of the inappropriateness, in which he told her that she was moving too slow.

After being told to keep her protests in until after the game by UCR coach Nikki Palmer, Tyson actually complied despite her frustration. However, she says the following comment was what, ironically, led to her ejection from the game: “This is bigger than softball. Let’s play softball.”

“I own not standing down b/c I won’t show women that a woman especially a black woman has to stand down & shut up.. in a sport made for women, played by women!” Tyson said. “So I demanded an explanation for the initial issue of why he kept ending their warm up, why I was warned & now my ejection…”

Regarding the incident, the NCAA has received numerous complaints, resulting in the following response from them:
The same protocol for processing this ejection/suspension report was followed that has been in place for many years. However, the NCAA Softball Rules Committee can discuss improving protocols related to processing ejection/suspension reports and will take your suggestions into consideration. Unfortunately, there is no appeal process and the NCAA softball playing rules don’t allow for an ejection/suspension to be overturned.

She responded to the situation on Twitter, when she tweeted, “I will not serve this suspension in vein! My babies deserve better! This wasn’t about 90 seconds this was about 1 man impacting the game, de-humanizing my athletes and myself! She tweeted.“I will never stand down on that nor apologize for it!”

In Case You Missed It: De La Soul Albums are Available for Streaming

On March 3, Hip-Hop group De La Soul’s entire back catalog became available on digital streaming platforms for the first time.

By Shanell Holback @nellywrites__

On March 3, Hip-Hop group De La Soul’s entire back catalog became available on digital streaming platforms for the first time.

While the three members of the legendary Hip-Hop group (Posdnuos, Dave, and Maseo) were inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2011, they were also in the middle of an uphill battle for ownership and streaming rights to the same music that was being inducted.

At the time, sample clearances and a longstanding disagreement with their formal label Tommy Boy held up De La’s digital presence. Today, on the 34th anniversary of De La Soul’s debut album ‘3 Feet High and Rising,’ De La fans can rejoice and stream the tunes of the Native Tounge members on the platform of their choice.

After digital platforms such as Apple Music, and Spotify became the dominant way to consume music, CD, and cassette players became obsolete. Unfortunately, De La’s fans had to rely on physical copies, of classic albums such as ‘3 Feet High and Rising,’ ‘De La Soul Is Dead,’ and, ‘Buhloone Mindstate’ leaving the group’s legacy with a slim chance of rebirth amongst younger hip-hop consumers.

In June 2021 however, Tommy Boy was acquired by Reservoir media, giving new life to the group’s fight for the right to sell their music across digital platforms, unfortunately, one of the group’s founding members will not get a chance to celebrate the moment he and his bandmates waited over 20 years.

This comes not, Trugoy the Dove, real name Dave Jolicoeur passed away suddenly. The groups remaining two members wrote a heartfelt letter posted on Instagram to their fallen group member.

“Dear Dave, you were the heart of our group. You brought so much creativity, energy, and passion to our music, and your influence will be felt for years to come.”

“Your passing is a great loss not only to us but also to the entire hip-hop community. You were a true artist who used music to inspire and uplift others, and you will be deeply missed by all who knew you” the letter stated.

On the evening of March 2. hours before the group’s streaming debut, De La hosted “The D.A.I.S.Y Experience” at NYC’s Webster Hall. A celebration of Trugoy’s life and legacy along with the end of the fight for a digital legacy.

This week, Marlon Wayans took over as The Daily Show’s guest host, welcoming several guests, including his close buddy Omar Epps.

Wayans and Epps being childhood friends went down memory lane.  The comedian couldn’t help but share a prank that was played on Epps while he was filming the 1992 hit movie, Juice with the legendary rapper. Epps embarrassingly recalls, “Oh my goodness. Are you really bringing this up?”

“What people don’t know about ‘Pac is, he was a funny dude,” as Wayans explains Epps slept with his mouth wide open, “‘Pac went and took his balls and put ‘em out and put ‘em right near Omar’s mouth.”

“Why did you just do that?” Omar Epps asked before adding, “I was mad at ‘Pac for that, though. I was super mad, like, ‘Yo, son. You really gone’ do that?’” Wayans interjected, “but you always get mad. You got to work on that. You got anger issues, man.”

It’s been a historic time for Bison as the men’s Basketball Team enter the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1992. They look forward to face-off with the Kansas Jayhawks.

Howard University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Kenneth Blakeney says, “I watched them last year in the national championship game. I saw them in the semis and in the finals. I have a lot of respect for Coach Bill Self. They will be ready. They are a great program with a lot of history and tradition.”

“It’s a great feeling. It’s a long time coming for this university,” says Team Captain, Jelani Williams.

Sophomore Bryce Harris expresses, “It’s special being able to do this with the people you battle every day within practice, to be able to show it on a big stage which is march madness.”

For all the Bison fans, the gentlemen would like everyone to know, “Thank you, guys, for believing in us. Thank you for even when we had our down moments, thank you for staying solid,” said Harris

“Tune in. We are going to put on a show. We gonna shock the world,” adds Williams.

“[It’s] a legacy that’s been a long-standing legacy of excellence and Black excellence, not only in the DMV but across the country,” Blakeney said.
