DC Teachers’ Union President Killed In Car Ax

Before she was elected as union president, the North Carolina native spent 40 years teaching in DC classoom

Washington Teachers’ Union president Elizabeth Davis was killed in a car accident last night in Prince George’s County.  Davis died at Prince George’s Hospital after her car collided with another car near Route 301 and Harbour Way in Bowie.  That driver of the other vehicle, 68-year-old John Starr of Annapolis was also killed.

Elizabeth Davis, President, Washington Teachers’ Union

Davis wielded immense political power as the Teachers’ Union president. Elected to the post in 2013, she was a union firebrand and muscular advocate for rank and file teachers in the DC Public School system.  Contract negotiations with the DC government, Mayor Muriel Bowser and current chancellor Lewis Ferebee were often contentious. More recently, Davis was resistant to have teachers return to the classroom during the pandemic unless a concrete plan was for PPE and other safety measures were spelled out by DCPS.

Before she was elected as union president, the North Carolina native spent 40 years teaching in DC classoom. Davis was 70 years old.

Reflecting on Good Friday

How we and our world has changed.

The holiest week for Christians is underway. Good Friday kicks off Easter weekend. This time last year… services were cancelled and churches closed. But doors were opened to much uncertainty.  Today… Good Friday saw another deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol.  A somber bookend from last year’s holy week.  But the last 12 months have given us much time to reflect on how we and our world has changed.

MLB All-Star Game Moves In Response to GA Voting Restrictions

Commissioner Rob Manfred made the decision.

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has moved the All-Star Game from Atlanta’s Truist Park, a response to Georgia enacting a new law last month restricting voting rights. MLB had awarded the game to Atlanta on May 29, 2019, and the game was scheduled for July 13 as part of baseball’s midsummer break that includes the Futures Game on July 11 and Home Run Derby the following night. But Commissioner Rob Manfred made the decision to move the All-Star events and the amateur draft, which had been scheduled to be held in Atlanta for the first time.

Man rams car into two Capitol police; 1 officer, driver killed

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Capitol Police officer has been killed after a man rammed a car into two officers at a barricade outside the U.S. Capitol and then emerged wielding a knife. The suspect died at a hospital. Capitol Police Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman did not identify the slain officer or suspect on Friday afternoon. Authorities said the attack did not appear to be related to terrorism. The crash and shooting happened at a security checkpoint near the Capitol as Congress is on recess. It comes as the Washington region remains on edge nearly three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden’s presidential win.

Johnson & Johnson Issues Statement On Vaccine Error

Current shipments of the J&J vaccine are not affected because they were made at a separate facility authorized by the FDA.

(Baltimore, MD) — Emergent BioSolutions in Baltimore accidentally mixed ingredients from the Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca COVID vaccine, ruining 15-million doses of the J&J vaccine. In a statement, Johnson & Johnson says the issue was identified, addressed and shared with the Food & Drug Administration. The company is providing additional experts to be on-site at Emergent to supervise manufacturing of the J&J vaccine and will continue to work toward the Baltimore facility receiving Emergency Use Authorization. Current shipments of the J&J vaccine are not affected because they were made at a separate facility authorized by the FDA.

Confederate General Statues Coming Down in VA

Virginia’s Supreme Court Approves Removing War Memorials

(Richmond, VA) — Virginia’s Supreme Court is clearing the path for two statues of Confederate generals in Charlottesville to be removed. The court ruled the state’s ban on removing war memorials did not apply to those built before 1997. That ruling ends a legal battle that has drawn on for years over the fate of statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Charlottesville’s city council voted to remove the Lee statue before the 2017 white nationalist rally in that city where a woman was killed after an activist drove his car through dozens of protesters. The statues of Confederate generals were first installed in that city in the 1920s.

Can I Still Spread the Coronavirus After I’m Vaccinated?

By MARION RENAULT Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — Experts are still studying how good COVID-19 vaccines are at preventing people from spreading the virus, but say the risk is low. The current vaccines are highly effective at preventing people from getting seriously sick with COVID-19. But even if vaccinated people don’t get sick, they might still get infected with the virus without showing any symptoms. Given the uncertainty, experts say fully vaccinated people should continue to wear masks and social distance in public and when visiting with unvaccinated people at high risk for severe illness if infected.

World’s Last Blockbuster More Popular After Netflix Show

BEND, Ore. (AP) — The Blockbuster video rental store in Bend, Oregon soared to international fame when it became the last such franchise on Earth in 2019. Now, a new Netflix documentary called “The Last Blockbuster” has spurred even more visitors to the unassuming location in a strip mall 170 miles east of Portland. The movie focuses on the manager’s day-to-day work running the store, which became the last in the world when the Blockbuster in Perth, Australia, closed two years ago. The movie by two local filmmakers peaked at No. 4 in the U.S. after it began streaming on Netflix on March 15.

It’s Cherry Blossom Season, but DC Isn’t Ready To Open Up

By ASHRAF KHALIL and NATHAN ELLGREN Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials in the nation’s capital are watching the crowds as cherry blossom season begins in earnest. The distinctive white and pink petals reached full bloom last Sunday, about a week earlier than expected. It’s an event that normally brings in thousands of visitors and signals the unofficial start of Washington, D.C.’s, peak tourist and convention season. But Washington remains largely locked down with limitations on outdoor gatherings and all Smithsonian museums, plus the zoo, shuttered because of the coronavirus. The National Park Service stands poised to limit access to the Tidal Basin and its high concentration of cherry blossom trees if the crowds there grow too thick.

2 Members of Salt Lake City’s ‘Real Housewives’ Arrested

By SOPHIA EPPOLITO and LARRY NEUMEISTER Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Two members of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” reality television show have appeared in court after being arrested on federal fraud charges related to a telemarketing scheme. Authorities announced that Jennifer Shah and Stuart Smith were arrested Tuesday in Utah on charges unsealed in New York City. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said Shah portrays herself as a wealthy and successful businessperson on television while Smith is cast as her first assistant. But Strauss says their “so-called business opportunities” they pushed on their victims were actually fraud schemes motivated by greed. Shah’s attorney Sam Meziani declined comment as he exited the court with Shah, who remained silent.

Hunter Biden credits his second wife and the love from his father and late brother with helping him sober up in 2019.

Reports Say Sharon Osbourne Got a $10M Payout

After an on-air spat with Sheryl Underwood during an episode of The Talk, reports are swirling that former co-host Sharon Osbourne got a $10 million payout.
On top of that, another source is reporting that Osbourne can also talk about the on-air incident without any repercussions.
CBS announced that Sharon quit on Friday, but those close to Osbourne say that she’s still going to get her side of the story out to the public after being with the show for 11 years.
If you remember, two weeks ago Sharon got into an on-air argument with fellow co-host Sheryl Underwood about defending her pal Piers Morgan, who didn’t have kind words about Meghan Markle after her Oprah interview.
After getting a $10 million payout would you want to talk about the situation any longer? Do you think Sharon will be on TV again?

Michael Strahan Fixed His Signature Tooth Gap – Or Did He?

Michael Strahan is all smiles these days – a smile that no longer includes his signature tooth gap.
The GMA host and former NFL star posted a video of his recent trip to the dentist with the hashtag #GoodbyeGap
But is it a permanent fix? According to reports, it’s a removable dental piece that gives Strahan’s smile “the look of a filled-in tooth line”. And, well, April Fool’s Day is right around the corner.
Besides, just last week Strahan tweeted “I rock my gap with pride!”
Do you think the change is permanent, or part of a publicity stunt? Could Strahan actually be harming his image by fixing the iconic gap?

Pfizer Says Vaccine Is 100 Percent Effective In Teens

Pfizer says its COVID-19 vaccine is 100 percent effective in teens between the ages of 12 and 15, according to late-stage trial data.
The company says none of the teens given the vaccine during the trial became infected with COVID-19, while 18 teens in the placebo group were infected.
Pfizer will now seek approval from the FDA to offer the vaccine to teenage children, possibly in time for the new school year in the fall.
Last week, the company launched another vaccine trial test for children ages 6 months to 11 years.
If the vaccine is 100 percent effective, should it be mandatory to attend school?

Cancer-Causing Chemical Found In Some Hand Sanitizers

Americans have used a lot of hand sanitizer over the last year – but experts are warning that some types may be linked to cancer.
A recent study found elevated levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene in 21 out of the 260 hand sanitizer brands included in the study.
One researcher said he was “shocked” by the results – calling benzene one of “the most well-known” compounds linked to cancer.
Many brands including Purell, the largest maker of hand sanitizer, contained no benzene. The lab behind the study plan to lobby the FDA to recall the benzene-heavy products.
How do you choose which hand sanitizer to use?

By HILLEL ITALIE AP National Writer
NEW YORK (AP) — Children’s author Beverly Cleary, the writer behind the popular characters Ramona Quimby and Henry Huggins, has died. She was 104. Cleary’s publisher HarperCollins announced that the author died Thursday in Carmel Valley, California, where she had lived since the 1960s. No cause of death was given. Trained as a librarian, Cleary penned more than 30 books, which sold millions of copies, saying she began writing because children told her there were no stories about kids like them. Her first novel was 1950’s “Henry Huggins,” based on the children she grew up with in Portland, Oregon. She received the National Medal of Arts in 2003.

Osbourne Off ‘The Talk’ After Inquiry into Racism Discussion

LOS ANGELES (AP) — CBS says Sharon Osbourne will no longer appear on its daytime show “The Talk” after a heated on-air discussion about racism earlier this month. The network said Friday Osbourne had decided to leave the show following a review that found in part that her behavior toward her co-hosts “did not align with our values for a respectful workplace.” There was no immediate comment from Osbourne’s publicist. Osbourne and co-host Sheryl Underwood had a heated exchange about Osbourne’s support of British TV personality Piers Morgan on the March 10 show. Osbourne said she was told the network ordered her to be confronted, but CBS said it did not find evidence to support that claim.

Pelosi Appoints First African American As House Sergeant-At-Arms

Major General William Walker has commander of the DC National Guard.

(Washington, DC) — The House has a new Sergeant-at-Arms and he’s the first African American to hold that post. Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed DC National Guard Major General William Walker to the post. She called him a leader of great integrity and experience. The House and Senate Sergeants-at-Arms have wide responsibilities, including overseeing Capitol security. Both were forced out after the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recently chose Karen Gibson as the Senate’s new Sergeant-At-Arms. She is a retired Army lieutenant general.

New Police Chief for Prince George’s County

Aziz is a former executive director of the National Black Police Association and has been with the Dallas Police Department since 1992.

[keep-in-touch]

Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks has selected Dallas, Texas Deputy Police Chief Malik Aziz as the new county police chief.  Aziz was selected after a national, months-long search.  He replaces former Chief Hank Stawinski who resigned abruptly last year as officers of color continued to raise questions about hiring, promotions and allegations of racism in the department.

Dallas, Texas Deputy Police Chief Malik Aziz

He was selected over Interim Chief Hector Valez who served in that position immediately after Stawinski resigned. Aziz is a former executive director of the National Black Police Association and has been with the Dallas Police Department since 1992.  His appointment must be confirmed by the Prince George’s County Council.

Lil’ Mo Has A Lot To Sing About. It’s A Whole New Her!

Her new song is for whomever has ever had a Broken Heart!

As our National Women’s History month draws to a close, I had a chance to sit down with this Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, rapper, radio and tv personality, author, and trailblazer. With the help of Missy Elliott, Lil’ Mo broke down barriers in the music industry at a time when women were not prominent at all.

It’s hard to believe that she’s been in the music biz for 20 years, and Lil’ Mo is showing no signs of stopping. Hope you can check out her new song, Broken Heart. It’s not what you think. She’s not singing about her heart being broken at all. It’s quite the opposite. I’m all excited to hear her entire project.

Lil’ Mo has grown into a beautiful young lady. She has learned so much about herself. Remember when she was on R & B Divas and was dubbed “The Queen Of Shade” by Charlemagne The God? Well, she owns every bit of that title. However, her past has only helped her embrace the power she’s had all along. Now, she is claiming it. When talking to her, she talked about so many tough lessons learned from her past. She owns every single experience, and says that she’s no longer angry and broken. Instead, she is using her platform to heal others.

Holding On To Your Faith In Troubled Times

Are you worried about cracks in your faith foundation?

We’ve all heard the phrase, “my faith is being tested”.  You could argue those words are uttered once a month, even once a week.  In these troubled times of the pandemic, mass shootings, racism and political upheaval, some may wonder where is God in all of this?  What about those tests that don’t make the headlines?  What about problems with marriages, health challenges, troubles with personal finances, loss of friends or loved ones leaving you in an emotional lurch.  It’s enough to raise questions about your faith, your spirituality. We’re talking to those whose faith is a little shaken right now. Even shaken a lot.  Do you have questions?  Are you worried about cracks in your faith foundation?

Black Women Were 58% Less Likely To Be Hired For Government Jobs?

When discussing why bias might be more strong against Black women during the hiring process for those positions, the publication emphasized that within the new study’s data, Black women had a higher likelihood of being called in for an interview if “all personally identifying information was withheld during the application screening process — so recruiters did not know a candidates name, race, and gender.”

A new study shows that when certain information such as name, race or gender were left off their corporate applications, black woman were more likely to get an interview for the government job. Follow us on IG: @FrankSkiShow featuring @FrankSki & @PeninaBrown

Restrictive Voter Laws Moving Through Georgia State House

Georgia House passes GOP election bill despite criticism.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Georgia state House has passed legislation brought by Republicans that could lead to a sweeping overhaul of state election law. Proposed changes include provisions adding new requirements and restrictions on absentee voting and giving the GOP-led legislature greater control over the administration of elections. Democrats and voting rights groups say the bill, passed Thursday, would disproportionately disenfranchise voters of color. It’s part of a wave of GOP-backed election bills introduced in states across the country after former President Donald Trump stoked false claims that fraud led to his loss in November. The measure could result in a House-Senate conference committee where the chambers hash out their differences before voting again on a compromise.

Biden Talks More Vaccines and Voting Rights

Biden also calls Republican efforts to restrict voting rights “sick.”

(Washington, DC) — President Biden is holding his first news conference since taking office. He opened with a progress report on COVID vaccinations. Biden reminded everyone he met his goal of getting 100 millions shots in the arms of Americans in his first 100 days in office. He said his new goal will be 200 millions shots in his first 100 days.

Biden also calls Republican efforts to restrict voting rights “sick.” He claimed most Republicans he knows also think these efforts are “despicable.” He said the Republican moves to address voting issues make “Jim Crow look like Jim Eagle.” He said things like closing polling places at 5 p.m. when most people are working is wrong.
