Obamas On Chauvin Verdict: “We Cannot Rest”

Barack and Michelle Obama believe more needs to be done in the wake of Tuesday’s guilty verdict for Derek Chauvin.
In a statement, the former President and First Lady called the verdict “a necessary step”, but urged “We cannot rest. We will need to follow through with the concrete reforms that will reduce and ultimately eliminate racial bias in our criminal justice system.”
The Obamas added “True justice requires that we come to terms with the fact that Black Americans are treated differently, every day”.

FTC Offers Reminder: You Don’t Have To Pay For A Vaccine Shot

The FTC has issued another warning to watch out for vaccine scams.
This time, it’s a simple one: COVID-19 vaccine shots are free – so if someone tries to charge you money for one, it’s a scam.
The agency encourages you to ignore any online ads or social media posts offering to sell you the vaccine, and warns never to share personal or medical information with people you don’t know.
State and local health departments are the most reliable way to find a vaccine shot. All U.S. adults are eligible to receive the vaccine as of this week.
Have you encountered any vaccine-related scams?

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A white Louisiana school bus driver who made a racist remark to a Black student about the murder of George Floyd is out of a job after the child’s mother complained to school officials. WWL-TV reports that an 11-year-old boy had a face mask below his nose and told a driver he was out of breath after running to catch a middle school bus in metro New Orleans this month. The driver allegedly replied with a racist statement about Floyd’s killing. The superintendent in St. Bernard Parish says the remark was offensive, and the driver no longer works there.

Associated Press undefined
CHANHASSEN, Minn. (AP) — Paisley Park will welcome back a select 1,400 fans on Wednesday to mark the fifth anniversary of Prince’s death from inside his creative sanctuary in suburban Minneapolis. The sprawling studio’s atrium will be opened to those who rushed for one of the free reservations. Those who can’t go inside are invited to leave flowers and mementos in front of a statue erected outside the front doors in the shape of his famous purple Love Symbol. Prince died April 21, 2016, of an accidental fentanyl overdose at age 57. Since then, Paisley Park was turned into a museum and paid tours were created, though those are on pause for the anniversary.

‘Sliver of Hope.’ Relief, Caution as America Absorbs Verdict

By DEEPTI HAJELA and JOCELYN NOVECK Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — A sense of relief is palpable across the United States after a jury found former Minnesota Police Officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murder and manslaughter in killing George Floyd. But when it comes to what’s next, the reaction is more hesitant. Some are hopeful, pointing to the protests and sustained outcry as signs of change to come, in policing and otherwise. Others are more circumspect, wondering if the one longed-for outcome will really be the start of something better in a country fraught with a history of racial injustice, especially when it comes to the treatment of Black people at the hands of law enforcement.

Social Justice and the Black Church

What is next in the fight for racial and social justice?

Joy, elation, sighs of relief.  Just some of the emotions resonating around much of the country and world this evening as the conviction of Derek Chauvin takes hold.  Now that he is behind bars for the murder of George Floyd,  what is next in the fight for racial and social justice and how do people of color build on this momentum?

DOJ Investigating Policing In Minneapolis

U.S. Justice Department is set to launch a sweeping investigation into police practices in Minneapolis.

Washington, DC (Wednesday, April 21 2021) – A day after a 12-member jury delivered a guilty verdict against ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, the U.S. Department of Justice is set to launch a sweeping investigation into policing practices in Minneapolis.

Reports this morning indicate Attorney General Merrick Garland will make the announcement later today.  The probe reportedly will examine practices used by police and whether the department engages in discriminatory practices.  The move comes in the wake of President Biden’s pledge that his administration will not rest following the Chauvin verdict.  Biden yesterday called the guilty decision at great step and went on to urge Congress to approve the George Floyd Justice In Policing Act.

The DOJ investigation will look at the Minneapolis police department’s handling of misconduct allegations.  It’s not yet clear how far back the probe will go.

Biden: “We Can’t Stop Here” Calls for Police Reform

Calling systemic racism a stain on our nation’s soul, President Biden and Vice President Harris are urging Congress to act swiftly to address policing reform.

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, April 20, 2021) – President Biden is calling the guilty verdict of ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin “a giant step forward.”  Speaking from the White House this evening just hours after a jury convicted Chauvin on all three counts in the death of George Floyd, Biden called systemic racism a stain on our nation’s soul and he called on Congress to act swiftly to address policing reform.

Vice President Kamala Harris spoke before Biden’s remarks and said lawmakers now need to take action in passing the George Floyd Justice In Policing Act. “Today, we feel a sigh of relief.  Still, it cannot take away the pain.  A measure of justice is not the same as equal justice,” Harris said.

Biden said he was heartened by the jury’s verdict. Nothing can ever bring their brother, their father back, but this can be a giant step forward in the march towards justice in America,” Biden said.

President Biden and Vice President Harris were reported to have watched the verdict from the Private Dining Room in the White House.  A senior administration officials described the reaction as a collective exhale.

Chauvin Guilty on All 3 Counts In the Death of George Floyd

After 10 hours of deliberations, jurors find Derek Chauvin guilty on all three counts

BREAKING – After three weeks of testimony and 10 hours of deliberations, jurors in the Derek Chauvin murder trial wasted little time in deciding his fate in the death of George Floyd.

The 12-member panel of six White, four Black, and two multiracial persons found the former Minneapolis police officer guilty on all three counts of 2nd degree murder, third degree murder, and manslaughter charges in the death of George Floyd last May 25th.

Following weeks of testimony from both sides and watching that infamous video of Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes, jurors sided with the prosecution in finding Chauvin guilty of causing the death of Floyd.

Chauvin will be sentenced within next 8 weeks.  His bail has been revoked and he was handcuffed and taken off to jail.

“Believe your eyes.  What you saw, you saw,” the words of special prosecutor Steve Schleicher told the jury yesterday during closing arguments.  Prosecutors described Chauvin as arrogant and intent on winning without any care or compassion for Floyd.

But on the defense side.  Chauvin attorney Eric Nelson countered the prosecution’s arguments telling jurors to look at the totality of the circumstances and not just the 9-minutes and 29-seconds the prosecution continued to hammer on.  Nelson accused prosecutors of trying to mislead the panel.

Chauvin faced murder and manslaughter charges.

Second-degree intentional murder carries up to 40 years behind bars, third degree murder would land Chauvin 25 years in prison and second degree manslaughter careers a 10 year prison term.  Sentencing guidelines call for far less time, including 12 1/2 years on either of the murder counts.

Verdict Is In!!! Decision to be Announced btw 4:30 and 5:30pmET

Jurors have decided the fate of the ex-Minneapolis police officer.

(April 20, 2021) – Jurors in the Derek Chauvin murder trial have reached a verdict.  No word yet on what that decision is just yet.  But the verdict is to be read before 5:30pmET.  The family of George Floyd is said to be headed to the courthouse.  Chauvin faces 2nd and 3rd degree murder charges along with manslaughter charges in the death of George Floyd.

R. Kelly Associate Admits He Torched One Of The Singer’s Accuser’s Car In Florida

R. Kelly’s associate, Michael Williams pleaded guilty to one count of arson for setting an SUV on fire that was rented by the father of one of R. Kelly’s ex-girlfriends, Azriel Clary.

In exchange for Williams’ plea deal, he won’t be charged with witness tampering and will face between 60 and 71 months in jail.

Back in June, Clary showed a video of her charred video. The court also found that Williams had Googled, “how do fertilizer bombs work?” “witness intimidation” and “case law for tampering with a witness.”

Williams has pleaded guilty along with other associates of Kelly, Donnell Russell, and Richard Arline Jr. R. Kelly has maintained that he has no connection with Williams, Russell, or Arline or their crimes.

Do you think the guilty charge of R. Kelly’s associates will play a part in his own trial?

Minneapolis Fortified, Awaits Chauvin Verdict

Concrete barriers, chain-link fences and barbed wire now ring parts of downtown Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — More than 3,000 National Guard soldiers, along with police officers, sheriffs deputies and other law enforcement personnel have flooded Minneapolis with a verdict looming in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer charged with murder in the death last year of George Floyd. But in the city that has come to epitomize America’s debate over police killings, there are places where Minneapolis can feel almost like a police state.  Concrete barriers, chain-link fences and barbed wire now ring parts of downtown Minneapolis, so that authorities can quickly close off the courthouse where the trial is being held if trouble breaks out. It’s become normal to pass convoys of desert-tan armored vehicles on highways, or stumble across armed soldiers at intersections.

In death, long after loss, Mondale’s liberal legacy stands

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Many Americans may remember Walter Mondale for his near-shutout defeat for the White House in 1984. But well after his bruising loss, the Minnesota Democrat who died Monday at 93 remained a revered liberal elder — with a list of accomplishments that are still relevant today. As a young senator, he co-wrote the Fair Housing Act of 1968, a pillar of federal civil rights legislation. Under President Jimmy Carter, he became the first vice president to regularly advise the president. He also named a woman as his running mate, a first for a major presidential ticket.

(Tuesday, April 20, 2021) – President Biden is weighing in on the Derek Chauvin murder trial.  Biden told reporters today he is “praying the verdict is the right verdict.”  Biden’s comments come as 12 jurors are deliberating the fate of the fired Minneapolis police officer in the death of George Floyd.

The president added he believes the case to be overwhelming.  Biden confirmed that he called the family of Floyd and said he can only imagine the pressure and anxiety they are feeling.  “They’re a good family and they’re calling for peace and tranquility no matter what that verdict is,” said Biden.

Biden told reporters he was only commenting on the trial because the jurors in the case are  sequestered,

Paris Jackson is embracing her position as a public figure and musician but she makes it clear that her foundation was rooted in her father’s “solid morals.”

“We were very privileged growing up, but when it came to things like getting toys and going on the rides, we had to earn that,” she explains to Evening Standard.

Paris said her father made it, “very clear to us that those rides and the zoo were for underprivileged children — children who were sick and couldn’t go to Disneyland.”

“He would be like: ‘Oh, you want to go to Toys ‘R’ Us and get five toys? Great. You need to read five books — and I will test you on those books,” said Paris.

Georgia’s Abrams navigates voting law fight with eye on 2022

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia’s well-known voting rights advocate, Stacey Abrams, is taking a carefully balanced approach in response to new laws many people have said are an attempt by Republicans to suppress votes by people of color. When asked about the law changes, Abrams is critical but measured. Abrams acknowledges the laws are a response to an increase in voting by people of color. But Abrams is discouraging boycotts while reassuring Democrats they can still win races under the new rules, even as she hopes those rules are struck down in the courts. Abrams is a past candidate for governor and could be again.

Figure Skating in Harlem Finds Ways to Deal with Pandemic

By BARRY WILNER AP Sports Writer
For months last year, Figure Skating in Harlem included no figure skating. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the members of the 24-year-old organization that serves young women of color in New York City didn’t see the ice from late winter until fall. Once they returned, with strict coronavirus-prevention protocols, it was a major step toward normality. The challenges for the girls extended far beyond the absence of ice time. The program’s objective for nearly a quarter-century has been helping girls of color transform their lives by growing in confidence, leadership and academic achievement.

Attorneys at Chauvin Trial in Floyd Death Make Final Pitch

By AMY FORLITI and TAMMY WEBBER Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Attorneys in the trial of a former Minneapolis police officer charged with killing George Floyd will make their closing arguments Monday. Each side will be seeking to distill three weeks of testimony into a compelling argument that persuades jurors to deliver their view of the right verdict. For prosecutors, it’s that Derek Chauvin recklessly squeezed the life from Floyd as he pinned him to the pavement for more than 9 minutes in a clear misuse of force. For the defense, it’s that Floyd died of a bad heart and made himself more vulnerable by abusing drugs and resisting officers. The eventual verdict will come in a city and nation on edge over the outcome.

On Monday, April 12, all DC residents 16 and older became eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in Washington, DC. To ensure that DC is able to get the vaccine out as efficiently as possible, the Mayor is calling on all DC residents to pre-register for a vaccination appointment by going to vaccinate.dc.gov or calling 1-855-363-0333. Since the pre-registration system launched, approximately 92,120 individuals have already pre-registered, received an invitation, and booked an appointment. To date, approximately 119,791 individuals have pre-registered for and are awaiting an appointment.

Earlier this week, Mayor Bowser called on residents of DC, Maryland, and Virginia to pre-register for a vaccination appointment in the state in which they live:

  • DC residents are encouraged to pre-register in DC at vaccinate.dc.gov or by calling 1-855-363-0333
  • Maryland residents are encouraged to pre-register in Maryland at covidvax.maryland.gov or by calling 1-855-634-6829
  • Virginia residents are encouraged to pre-register in Virginia at vaccinate.virginia.gov or by calling 877-829-4682

Individuals who previously pre-registered for an appointment through the portal and who have already received their vaccination elsewhere can email vaccinatedc@dc.gov or call 1-855-363-0333 to have their information removed from the pre-registration list.

Eligible DC residents are also reminded of other ways to make an appointment, including:

  • Directly through their health care provider
  • Veterans and veteran spouses can get vaccinated through the VA Medical Center and can learn more by calling (202) 745-4342
  • DC residents 65 and older, teachers and school staff, child care workers, and health care workers can book appointments through the CVS site (when appointments are available)

With the new pre-registration system, individuals can register online at any time on any day via vaccinate.dc.gov, or register by phone by calling the call center at 1-855-363-0333, Monday-Friday from 8 am to 7 pm or on Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 4 pm. Language translation services are available through the call center. Call center staff are also able to take calls from 711, a free video relay service from the FCC that allows individuals to sign with a hearing interpreter who is then talking on the phone with a call taker.

Each week, invitations are sent:

  • Thursdays by 10 am
  • Sundays by 10 am
  • And, only if any appointments still need to be filled, Tuesdays by 10 am.

Anyone who registers by 11:59 p.m. tonight and who is currently eligible for the vaccine in DC will be part of the randomized selection process tomorrow morning. Once invitations go out, individuals have 48 hours to book their appointment. If an individual does not book their appointment, their name will go back in the pre-registration system (after three unanswered invitations an individual will need to register in the system again).

The current list of priority zip codes includes: 20010, 20011, 20017, 20018, 20002, 20003, 20019, 20020, 20032, 20422 and 20593. Priority zip codes are determined by identifying areas where residents have been disproportionately burdened by COVID-19 and areas that are lagging in COVID-19 vaccination coverage.

Mayor Bowser’s three operating principles for the pre-registration system are: 1) an equitable distribution of the vaccine; 2) a consistent scheduling cadence so residents know what to expect; and 3) a shared responsibility, across our community, to get people pre-registered.

DC still needs more vaccine, and we will continue to advocate for additional doses so that we can save lives and meet the demand of our community.

Kanye West Is ‘Hoping To Date An Artist’ After Kim Kardashian Divorce

Well, the Kim and Kanye divorce has just taken a unique turn, sources tell Page Six that Kanye has already started thinking of who he’d like to date after his divorce is final.

Kanye hopes to be paired up “with an artist and a creative person,” said the source. Kanye thinks he and an artist, “can speak the same language.”

A source also spoke out on recent rumors that Kim was dating Van Jones saying the reality star is, “not dating anyone because, if she were, it would be a career move.”

If you think all this is strange, here’s another tidbit the source spilled on Kim, she “can’t date quietly” because “she doesn’t even understand what that would be like.”

Who do you think would be a good match for Kanye? Would you date someone to advance your career?

Fyre Festival Attendees Get $7200 In Class Action Settlement

277 people who got stranded during the infamous Fyre Festival are finally getting their payback – $7,220 from a class-action settlement.
The $2 million settlement was announced this week, ending a lawsuit against festival organizers including Billy McFarland – who is currently serving a six-year prison sentence on fraud charges.

Attendees spent anywhere from $1,000 to $12,000 to attend the 2017 festival, which was cancelled before it even started, leaving guests stranded on an island that resembled a disaster camp.
Why did the Fyre Festival capture the world’s attention? Should someone try to organize another one?

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Police are working to identify a gunman and determine his motive for opening fire at a FedEx facility near the Indianapolis airport. Deputy Chief Craig McCartt of the Indianapolis police said the gunman started randomly shooting at people in the parking lot late Thursday night and then went into the building. McCartt said four people were killed outside the building and another four were killed inside. Several people were also wounded, including five taken to the hospital.

Lamar Odom Recalls Calling Kobe Bryant To Help With Gambling Debt

Lamar Odom was a guest on Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson’s “All The Smoke” podcast when he recalled one of the last times speaking with Kobe Bryant.

Odom said he had been gambling and his debt got too high for him and he had no choice but to call Kobe Bryant for help.

Although Kobe wasn’t happy about Odom’s actions, he eventually gave him the money to settle his debt.

Odom says the last time he spoke with Bryant was a conversation about being “great.”

Do you think Lamar Odom will live up to Kobe’s expectations of “being great?”

Pfizer CEO: 3rd COVID Vaccine Dose Likely

Researchers still don’t know how long you’re protected against the virus once you’ve been fully vaccinated.

(New York, NY) — Pfizer’s CEO says people will “likely” need a third booster dose of the COVID vaccine. Albert Bourla said the third dose might have to be taken within 12 months of getting fully vaccinated. In comments taped April 1st but only made available today, Bourla added that it’s possible people will need to get vaccinated against the coronavirus annually. That’s because researchers still don’t know how long you’re protected against the virus once you’ve been fully vaccinated.
