Maryland’s Governor Pushes Coronavirus Funding

Hogan submits bill to tap funds for virus preparation

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan says he’s submitting emergency legislation to tap extra money to prepare for response to coronavirus. Hogan said Wednesday the measure would grant him authority to transfer funds from the state’s rainy day fund. The bill would allow the governor to transfer up to $50 million from the fund. Hogan says he will submit a $10 million emergency appropriation request as part of a supplemental budget to the General Assembly this week. The governor also announced that the Maryland Emergency Management Agency is raising its activation level to mobilize additional resources across state government. Maryland has no confirmed cases of coronavirus at this time.

ADHD Diagnoses Increasing In Black Kids, Report Suggests

The new study is a based on three years of data — 2016 through 2018 — from a national in-person survey, and represents about 23,000 children ages 3 to 17. About 17% of black children had ever been diagnosed, compared with about 15% of white kids and about 12% of Hispanic kids, the report found.

NEW YORK (AP) — For the first time, a U.S. survey found that black children appear to be more likely than white kids to be diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and other learning disabilities.

Previous studies had found the diagnosis was far more likely in white kids.

It’s not known what might have driven the change described in Wednesday’s report, said lead author Benjamin Zablotsky of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In past studies that found higher rates of ADHD diagnoses in white kids, researchers hypothesized there were racial differences in access to health professionals or perhaps racial differences in attitudes that make white parents more likely to seek an ADHD diagnosis than black parents.

The new study is a based on three years of data — 2016 through 2018 — from a national in-person survey, and represents about 23,000 children ages 3 to 17. About 17% of black children had ever been diagnosed, compared with about 15% of white kids and about 12% of Hispanic kids, the report found.

The survey question asked about ADHD and “other learning disabilities” but didn’t define what they might be. Some examples might include dyslexia or reading comprehension problems. It’s not clear to what extent the bottom-line statistics are influenced by conditions other than ADHD, Zablotsky said.

Paul Morgan, a Penn State University researcher, noted the CDC report is based only on what parents said. The researchers didn’t look at medical records to confirm the rates.

But there are good reasons why ADHD may be as or more common in black kids, he said. Experts have long believed black kids were under-diagnosed, and that they are at higher risk of conditions that can lead to ADHD, such as lead poisoning or low birthweight.

ADHD has been called the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorder in U.S. children, with more than 6 million kids diagnosed. The condition makes it hard for children to pay attention and control impulsive behaviors. It’s often treated with drugs, behavioral therapy, or both.

Children living in poor families were more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD or other learning disabilities than kids in affluent households, the new CDC report found.

The children of parents with less than a high school education were similarly more likely to have a diagnosis, the report said.

Food Stamp Change Fuels Anxiety As States Try To Curb Impact

“It means the world to me,” said Butler, who shares a one-bedroom apartment with two others. “We can go without a lot of things, like phones and music. We can’t go without eating.”

CHICAGO (AP) — Having food stamps offers Richard Butler a stability he’s rarely known in his 25 years. He was in state custody at age 2, spent his teen years at a Chicago boys’ home and jail for burglary, and has since struggled to find a permanent home.

The $194 deposited monthly on his benefits card buys fresh produce and meat.

“It means the world to me,” said Butler, who shares a one-bedroom apartment with two others. “We can go without a lot of things, like phones and music. We can’t go without eating.”

But that stability is being threatened for people like Butler, who are able-bodied, without dependents and between the ages 18 and 49. New Trump administration rules taking effect April 1 put hundreds of thousands of people in his situation at risk of losing their benefits. They hit particularly hard in places like Illinois, which also is dealing with a separate, similar change in the nation’s third-largest city.

From Hawaii to Pennsylvania, states are scrambling to blunt the impact of the new rules, with roughly 700,000 people at risk of losing benefits unless they meet certain work, training or school requirements. They’ve filed a multi-state lawsuit, expanded publicly funded job training, developed pilot programs and doubled down efforts to reach vulnerable communities, including the homeless, rural residents and people of color.

Social service agencies say they won’t be able to fill the gap, making increased homelessness and more hospital visits among the biggest concerns. Experts say they’ve already seen troubling signs in some states.

“This is a cascading effect,” said Robert Campbell, managing director at Feeding America, a network of hundreds of food banks nationwide. “It will increase demands on the emergency food system, food banks and pantries.”

Currently, work-eligible, able-bodied adults without dependents under 50 can receive monthly benefits if they meet a 20-hour weekly work, job training or school requirement. Those who don’t are are limited to three months of food stamps over three years.

However, states with high unemployment or few jobs have been able to waive time limits. Every state except Delaware has sought a waiver at some point, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The new rules make it harder to get waivers. They’re the first of three changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which feeds 36 million people nationwide.

The Trump administration has touted the change as a way to get people working and save $5.5 billion over five years. Able-bodied adults without dependents are 7% of SNAP recipients.

But states fighting the change say that argument is misguided.

“Not everyone is in a position to get a job tomorrow, and taking away access to food is only going to make that more difficult,” said Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Secretary Teresa Miller. “We’re going to have more hungry people in the state.”

Pennsylvania — where as many as 100,000 people could be affected — is working with social services groups to create 30 job training programs for SNAP recipients.

However, experts say work opportunities are limited.

More than half of SNAP recipients have a high school diploma, but about one-quarter have less, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Available jobs are more likely to have low pay, shifting schedules that might not offer enough qualifying hours and few benefits like paid sick leave.

“Work requirements really don’t really do much to affect the rate at which people are working,” said Elaine Waxman at the Urban Institute, a nonprofit research organization. “If people can work and consistently, they pretty much are.”

Some states are focusing on rural areas, which have less access to transportation and services.

Hawaii, for instance, wants to develop a pilot program to help 400 Molokai residents keep benefits. The rural island once had a waiver because of high unemployment, but the new rules assign Molokai to the same job market as nearby, more prosperous Maui, even though a 30-minute plane ride is the only way to travel between the islands.

The program would use education, training and volunteering to fulfill the work requirement. It’s modeled after similar programs used in remote Alaska, which is seeking waivers for less-populated areas. Roughly 5,000 in Alaska could lose benefits.

Attorneys general in nearly 20 states and Washington, D.C., have sued to block the rules. They argue the changes will force people to divert their limited funds, leading to homelessness and health problems.

People with food insecurity spend 45% more on medical care annually than those who are food secure, according to a 2018 report by the nonprofit Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Experts say critics’ worries are founded and point to Kentucky as a case study.

Like a handful of states, Kentucky has voluntarily instated time limits for SNAP benefits since 2017. More than 13,000 people in Kentucky lost benefits because they reached the three-month limit, according to a 2019 Urban Institute report.

Anecdotally, there’s been an increase in food pantry visits.

In Fayette County, which lost its waiver in 2018, the average number of monthly household visits to food pantries jumped from 1,800 to 2,000, according Michael Halligan, CEO of God’s Pantry Food Bank in Lexington.

“Starving people does not help them get employment,” said Mary Frances Charlton, a Chicago Coalition for the Homeless attorney.

It’s a double whammy for Illinois as Cook County lost its waiver this year because of low unemployment, something that has happened in other states as economic conditions improve. Roughly 90,000 statewide will be affected by the Trump rule change at the same time another approximately 58,000 will risk losing benefits in the Chicago area.

For Charlton, it’s been worrisome as many of her clients lack access to mail and internet, and they might not find out until they go grocery shopping and discover a $0 balance on their Illinois Link cards. She’s working to get exemptions for as many as possible.

For instance, Butler may qualify because of mental health issues that have made it difficult for him to keep a job. He’s among the residents affected by the county change, but would have faced the same fate under the Trump administration rules.

In trying to deal with the volume of questions about the issue, Illinois has dedicated an email address just for the food stamps changes and hopes to add more job training.

Inspiration Corporation, a nonprofit, runs a training kitchen and restaurant out of a converted Chicago warehouse. It has proposed increasing its number of spots for SNAP participants from 35 to 45.

On a recent day, fractions used in measuring were scrawled on a white board near the kitchen, which serves Southern-inspired fare like grits.

Trainee Anthony Redmond, 44, started receiving food stamps when he was released from prison last summer. With the help, he was able to leave a halfway house and find his own place. After the training, he hopes to find employment and keep his benefits.

He dreams of opening a fleet of food trucks.

“If you take something that a person really needs and depends on and they don’t have any other life skills to get a job, to benefit their family,” he said, “it’s just going to cause trouble.”

Hate Crime Crack Down In DC

DC Attorney General Seeks Authority to Crack Down on Hate Crimes

(Washington, DC) — In an effort to crack down on hate crimes in Washington, the DC attorney general is seeking the authority to enforce the city’s anti-bias laws. DC Deputy Attorney General Toni Jackson testified in favor of a bill to allow DC’s attorney general to crack down on hate crimes yesterday before the DC Council’s Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety. She said their office is concerned the US Attorney’s Office for DC is failing to adequately pursue hate crimes. Committee chairman Charles Allen asked for more clarity on the bill, which he says is too vague.

3 Reasons To Pay For Spring Break With A Travel Credit Card

To put it in perspective: If a third of Americans will spend $1,488 on spring break travel and only a third of them will pay with a credit card, that amounts to over 200 billion missing points from the other two-thirds. Yes, that’s billion with a “b.”

It may be cold outside, but spring is just around the corner. A recent NerdWallet survey found that 33% of Americans plan to travel for spring break vacation this year. If you’re in this camp, now’s the time to make travel plans (if you haven’t already).

The same survey, conducted online by The Harris Poll of over 2,000 U.S. adults, found that those planning to go on a 2020 spring break trip expect to spend $1,488, on average, on their vacation. But only 33% of those planning to travel for spring break this year plan to use a credit card for some or all of those costs.

Given that many travel credit cards offer 2 points or more per dollar on travel spending, anybody who doesn’t charge their spring break expenses to a card like this is missing out on thousands of points.

To put it in perspective: If a third of Americans will spend $1,488 on spring break travel and only a third of them will pay with a credit card, that amounts to over 200 billion missing points from the other two-thirds. Yes, that’s billion with a “b.”

Of course, not everybody can or should pay for travel with a credit card. Those with poor credit or who are already carrying credit card debt shouldn’t make their situation worse by adding a big travel bill.

For those in good financial health, here are three reasons to book spring break travel with a credit card:

1. YOU CAN EARN POINTS

This is the most basic reason to book any flights and hotels with a travel card, but it bears repeating.

Cards vary in the number of points or miles awarded per dollar spent, and what qualifies for category bonuses. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers 3x points on “travel” generally, while The Platinum Card from American Express offers 5x points, but only on airfare booked directly from the airline or prepaid hotels booked through AmEx. Terms apply.

Similarly, airline and hotel cards only offer big spending bonuses for booking on their specific airline or hotel. If you’re an advanced credit card wielder, you can book each part of your spring break excursion with the appropriate card, or you can just use a catch-all travel card to cover all your expenses. Either way, you’re doing better than 66% of fellow spring breakers who won’t be earning points at all.

2. YOUR TRIP COULD BE PROTECTED

Some travel credit cards, especially the premium ones with high annual fees, offer various trip protections for travel purchased through the card.

Alex Trebek Donates $100,000 to LA Nonprofit

Jeopardy host Alex Trebek has donated $100,000 to Los Angeles homelessness non-profit Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission.

Contributed by Diamond Bullock

Amidst his fight with stage IV pancreatic cancer, Jeopardy host Alex Trebek has reportedly committed the selfless act of donating $100,000 to Los Angeles nonprofit Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission. The nonprofit focuses on preventing, reducing and eliminating poverty, hunger and homelessness in 12 California locations. It is a faith-based organization that values compassion, integrity, faith, diversity, and growth. It also owns several thrift stores, which is a source of funding for its facilities that house the homeless.

President and CEO of the nonprofit, Ken Craft, shared with Yahoo Entertainment that Trebek has made multiple donations over the past few years. Craft reached out in hopes that Trebek would be generous enough to help fund the non-profit’s expansion of three additional facilities. However, Craft did not expect a personal phone call from Trebek requesting a personal tour of the North Hollywood shelter. After the tour, Trebek reached out again by phone to inquire about the non-profit’s finances, including the overall budget and Craft’s personal salary. Trebek and Craft met once again, but this time, at Craft’s home. After a conversation of Trebek admiring Craft’s responsible handling of the non-profit finances, Trebek provided Craft with a $100,000 check. Trebek followed by extending an invite to Craft and his wife to attend a live taping of a Jeopardy episode. During a scheduled commercial break, Trebek introduced Craft and wife to the audience and took a photo with the couple.

Craft posted to his personal Facebook account about the story behind the donation, calling Trebek “an incredibly kind, gracious, and generous man.”

Netflix to Create Original African Content

Netflix recently took a trip to Africa to recruit talent that will develop original content and tell African stories.

In recent weeks, Netflix has been actively recruiting African talent to develop original content that tells African stories. The buzz behind Netflix’s successful Sengalese-based drama Atlantics and upcoming South African-based thriller Queen Sono has influenced the expansion into creating more African content.

According to Black Enterprise, Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos and a team of executives were recruiting creatives across all of Africa.

At a Netflix event in Lagos, Nigeria, Sarandos shared with the crowd: “I’ve learned so much in the very short time we’ve been here…(and) I’ve just been thrilled to be surrounded by some of the most creative and successful creators in the world here in Nigeria, telling your stories to the world.”

Head of African Originals Dorothy Ghettuba sat with Variety to dive deeper into Netflix’s trip to Africa. The Kenyan producer shared insight into upcoming projects, including South African teen drama “Blood & Water,” animated series “Mama K’s Team 4,” and an untitled Nigerian sci-fi drama series created by Akin Omotoso. The latter tells the story of a goddess named Kemi learning how to control her powers as a human while avenging her sister’s death. Netflix announced a list for the project including names such as Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Banky Wellington, Akin Omotoso, Kemi Adetiba, and more.

According to TheCable, Netflix’s interest in African content began when it acquired global rights to Nollywood movie Lionheart for $3.8 million in 2018. The film was directed by Genevieve Nnaji.

Graphic Photos From Kobe Bryant Crash Site Shared By LA County Deputies

“Our client, Vanessa Bryant, is absolutely devastated by allegations that deputies from the Lost Hills Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department publicly disseminated photos from the helicopter crash site.”

Contributed by Tanyia Foster

It’s being reported that graphic photos of the tragic crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna Bryant, and seven others, were allegedly shared by several Los Angeles County Sheriff deputies.

According to the  Los Angeles Times, a witness claims he witnessed one of the deputies showing off photos from the crash site in an area bar. The witness then filed a report online, leading to an investigation.

TMZ reports the photo’s consisted of the remains of several of the victims, as well as the aftermath. The photo were reportedly shared by several members of the department, as well other substations. It has now been confirmed by CNN, that eight deputies were allegedly involved in sharing photos from the scene.

Vanessa Bryant, reposted a statement that was made on her behalf. The statement shares Mrs.Bryant’s feelings towards the situation, saying —

“Our client, Vanessa Bryant, is absolutely devastated by allegations that deputies from the Lost Hills Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department publicly disseminated photos from the helicopter crash site.”

CORRECTED: The department at issue is the Los Angeles County Fire Dept (LACoFD) NOT the LAFD KANSAS CITY, Mo.–(repost: BUSINESS WIRE)–Statement From Gary C. Robb, Legal Counsel on Behalf of His Client, Vanessa Bryant: Our client, Vanessa Bryant, is absolutely devastated by allegations that deputies from the Lost Hills Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department publicly disseminated photos from the helicopter crash site. Mrs. Bryant personally went to the Sheriff’s office on January 26th and requested that the area be designated a no-fly zone and protected from photographers. This was of critical importance to her as she desired to protect the dignity of all the victims, and their families. At that time, Sheriff Alex Villanueva assured us all measures would be put in place to protect the families’ privacy, and it is our understanding that he has worked hard to honor those requests. First responders should be trustworthy. It is inexcusable and deplorable that some deputies from the Lost Hills Sheriff’s substation, other surrounding substations and LACOFD would allegedly breach their duty. This is an unspeakable violation of human decency, respect, and of the privacy rights of the victims and their families. We are demanding that those responsible for these alleged actions face the harshest possible discipline, and that their identities be brought to light, to ensure that the photos are not further disseminated. We are requesting an Internal Affairs investigation of these alleged incidents. Mrs. Bryant is grateful to the individual who filed an online complaint exposing these acts of injustice, and for the choice to protect human dignity. We ask that anyone else who has information as to the facts underlying these alleged grievous and shameful incidents contact our office at 816–474-8080 or email via www.robbrobb.com

Jordan Peele Reimagines ‘Candyman’

The movie will be released this June.

Contributed by Rebecca Johnson

Jordan Peele is producing a reimagined version of the horror classic Candyman under Universal Pictures.

Addressing social issues via horror has become a trademark in Peele’s productions. Candyman will address the ongoing issue of gentrification.

Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Coleman Domingo and Nathan Stewart-Jarret.

The official film description according to Shadow and Act reads: “For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Mateen) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Parris), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials. With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer (Domingo) exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifyingly viral wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.”

The movie will be released this June.

Kandi’s ‘Old Lady Gang’ Spinoff Show Begins Production

Kandi has begun production for a reality show centered around her Atlanta soul food restaurant Old Lady Gang.

Contributed by Diamond Bullock

Singer-songwriter and “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi has begun production for a reality show centered around her Atlanta soul food restaurant Old Lady Gang.

Kandi and her husband Todd Tucker opened Old Lady Gang in 2016 in Castleberry Hill as an ode to Kandi’s mother Joyce Jones and aunts Nora Wilcox and Bertha Jones. Two more locations have been opened in East Point and the State Farm Arena. The restaurant’s menu features a variety of soul food staples including fried chicken, mac & cheese, fish and grits, banana pudding, and more. Recognized as one of the tastiest soul food restaurants in the Southeast, the restaurant has received accolades such as Diner’s Choice Award in 2018 from Open Table.

According to AJC, there is no official statement from Bravo about the production or the focus of the show. It is unclear if the show is centered around the staff, Kandi and Todd’s experience as owners, or the drama centering the restaurant i.e. the shooting on the night of February 14, 2020. It is also unclear which location, if not all three, will be filmed.

According to Shiendlin, “What they decided to do was sell a couple of years’ worth of reruns.” Fortunately for fans, this means that Judge Judy will stay on air, but the 25th season will consist of the final episodes.

Black-Owned Honey Pot’s Target Ad Called ‘Racist’

In response to the accusations of Honey Pot being racist, founder Beatrice Dixon says: “I can’t expect them to understand the plight of what it is to be a black woman co-founder in business.”

Contributed by Diamond Bullock

Honey Pot, a Black-owned plant-based feminine hygiene product line, received a significant amount of backlash due to its latest Target commercial. In the 30 second commercial, Honey Pot founder Beatrice Dixon discusses her journey establishing her company as a Black woman.

“The reason why it’s so important for Honey Pot to do well, is so the next black girl that comes up with a great idea, she could have a better opportunity. That means a lot to me.” This line did not sit well with the white female demographic.

Immediately after the commercial debuted on Feb. 4, a flood of racist and negative reviews were posted on Trustpilot, a website dedicated to customer reviews. Dixon was accused of blatantly excluding white females and prioritizing Black females with her products. A few reviewers went as far as to use racist slurs to insult Dixon personally. Majority of the reviewers claimed that they would not support the business any longer. To highlight the brand’s mission of inclusivity, Dixon responded with the company’s tagline: Made by humans with vaginas, for humans with vaginas.

However, Dixon’s sales rose due to the support from the Black female community that witnessed the unwarranted accusations of racism. During the weeks after the commercial debuted, Honey Pot sales increased from 20% to 30%. After the flood of racist backlash on Trustpilot, Honey Pot sales increased 40% to 50%. Supporters went to social media to advocate for Dixon and the Honey Pot by posting about the brand and the products they purchased.

Eventually, Dixon told Buzzfeed News: “I can’t expect them to understand the plight of what it is to be a black woman co-founder in business.”

A Target spokesperson released an official statement: “Target has a longstanding commitment to empowering and investing in diverse suppliers that create a broad variety of products for our guests. We’re proud to work with Bea Dixon and The Honey Pot team to highlight Bea’s journey to build her brand and bring her products to Target.”

Honey Pot’s chemical-free feminine hygiene products, including tampons, sanitary napkins, wipes, and cleansers, are available in-stores at Target and online at thehoneypot.co

DC Councilmember Proposes Monthly $100 Public Transportation Benefit

The proposed program, named Metro for DC, is dedicated to improving bus service in low-income communities and providing the monthly benefit for the residents of these communities.

Ward 6 D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen has proposed a $100 monthly benefit to be used on a SmarTrip card by DC residents. The proposed program, named Metro for DC, is dedicated to improving bus service in low-income communities and providing the monthly benefit for the residents of these communities. The program prioritizes Medicaid-eligible residents first, followed by families earning up to 100% AMI ($96,000), families earning $155,000, and the individuals and families remaining. Students enrolled in the Kids Ride Free program and federal employees who already receive a benefit are not eligible for the new program.

The program will be funded by surplus taxes that have been collected by the city. However, if someone is accepted and enrolled into the program but does not use or finish the $100 benefit on their SmarTrip card, DC will not lose any money. This is because the benefit does not roll over: If there is any money left on the card, it will not be available to use the following month.

The program’s other initiative of improving bus service will include new buses, improved headways, bus lanes, bus shelters, etc. This will organically increase ridership and make Metrobuses convenient and reliable for DC residents, specifically low-income.

Councilmember Allen is introducing legislation for the program today, Tues. March 3rd.

Helping Hands Radiothon Raises Over $60k

96.3 WHUR listeners donated more than $60k to help send more than 1,000 students around the globe to perform community service. It was all part of the WHUR Helping Hands 2020 Radiothon.

Washington, D.C. – (Monday, March 2, 2020) –  Thanks to more than $60k in donations, hundreds of Howard University students can now prepare to head to 22 destinations across the globe to render service to communities in crisis.  WHUR listeners dug deep into their pockets Sunday to make the donations to the station’s Helping Hands Radiothon, which annually works to raise money for Howard’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB).

ASB is a unique service learning experience that exposes Howard University students to concepts of social justice, interfaith exploration, and ethical leadership development.  WHUR listeners phoned in donations to the Suntrust now Truist phone bank, donated on-line at whur.com, and stopped by the WHUR studios to give to an effort that will ultimately have a global impact.

11-hundred Howard students signed up this year to participate in ASB, where they will go to places like Ghana, Puerto Rico, New Orleans, Flint, Baltimore, Memphis, DC, and more than a dozen other sites.  It’s all part of an initiative Howard began 26 years ago that gives students the opportunity to forgo a traditional Spring Break and instead provide invaluable volunteer hours to communities that could really use some help and hope.

The HU students will be providing tutoring and mentoring to at-risk youth, working to restore areas devastated by natural disasters, tackle homelessness and gentrification challenges, and so much more. “We are so proud of the amazing work that the Howard University students are doing to impact neighborhoods around the globe.  That’s why we are honored yearly to do our part to make sure we can help to raise enough money to get them to their destinations,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.

This year, HU students will work with 150 community partners to perform over 100,000 hours of volunteer service.  “Our WHUR listeners are among some of the most generous people on the planet.  Whenever we issue a call to action, they respond with such kindness. We are thankful for and humbled by their giving spirit,” added Plater.

Through ASB, students are immersed in unique cultures that provide immediate assistance to those in need and enables the students to reflect on the challenges prevalent in distressed communities around the world.

Howard University students leave for their various volunteer areas later this month.  There is still time to get in on the giving.  Click the link to donate.  When you give, HU students can help.

And he also wants to build together, which I’ve never had. I’ve never had, you know, somebody who wants to see me shine and grow and be.”

Kanye West brought church to Paris Fashion Week when he held his Sunday Service in Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord at 8 AM.

Among the crowd were designers, stylists, writers, editors, West’s wife Kim and daughter North, as well as Kim’s sister Kourtney and her daughter Penelope. Unlike previous Sunday services, the venue held more than just West’s close family and friends and ticket buyers. The crowd surrounded the tight knit circle of West, his choir, and the pastor.

Although the obvious focus is religion, there was an emphasis on fashion as well. West dressed himself and his choir in matching beige outfits consisting of, according to Vogue, a “V-neck top, loose pants, turtleneck, gold necklace, and Yeezy sneakers.” Ironically, West delivered a sermon about materialism in front of the star-studded crowd. During the sermon, he says, “A lot of time we put our faith and trust in people, we put our faith and trust in material things.”

Lipton was known for being an expert interviewer and devoted to his craft.

Lipton spent 23 season, beginning in 1994, as the Inside the Actors Studio host. He left the show in 2019 when it changed networks. Lipton conceived the idea for the show in 1992 ads a master class for the Actors Studio Drama school which was a collaboration of the Actors  Studio and The New School.

During his time as host, nearly 300 people sat down with Lipton from Alec Baldwin to Julia Roberts. He would interview guest for over four hours and then cut the video down for television. Lipton was known for getting celebrities to open up about themselves. Lipton did all of his own research for the show and spent weeks preparing to meet with guests.

“If you had put a gun to my head and said, ‘I will pull the trigger unless you predict that in 23 years, Inside the Actors Studio will be viewed in 94 million homes in America on Bravo and in 125 countries around the world, that it will have received 16 Emmy nominations, making it the fifth most-nominated series in the history of television, that it will have received an Emmy Award for outstanding informational series and that you will have received the Critics’ Choice Award for best reality series host — predict it or die,’ I would have said, ‘Pull the trigger,'” said Lipton to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lipton won a Critics Choice Award for best reality series host and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Daytime Emmy’s in 2016. Inside the Actors Studio became one of the top rated shows on television.

If You Work Out Too Much, You’ll Burn Less Calories

Working out too much can actually make you less active during your non-workout hours—walking the dog, running errands, playing with the kids—resulting in fewer calories burned by the end of the day.

The more often you exercise, the more calories you burn, right? Not quite, finds a new study. Working out too much can actually make you less active during your non-workout hours—walking the dog, running errands, playing with the kids—resulting in fewer calories burned by the end of the day.

You heard that right: If you work out too much, you’ll actually burn less calories overall.

According to a recent study, 72 women ages 60 to 74 were split into three groups: women who strength trained once a week and did aerobic activity once a week; women who strength trained twice a week and did aerobic activity twice a week; and women who strength trained three times a week and did aerobic activity three times a week. Each workout took about 40 minutes.

Horace & Dickies: DMV Loses Another Piece Of History

Today, Horace and Dickies closes its doors for the last time.

Today, Horace and Dickies closes its doors for the last time. Long time DC residents have frequented the “little fish spot” on 12th and H ST for 30 years! Even with lines flowing out of the door, Horace & Dickies was definitely a go to spot any given PAY DAY!

DCist reports —

“Horace and Dickies has been an institution on H Street NE for 30 years and there’s no way to sugarcoat  news of their closure – it’s a loss for the community today and a loss connecting the neighborhood to its past,” says Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen.

This afternoon I will brave the line and order my usual fried fish dinner with double fries and mambo sauce on everything! Anybody need me to pick them up something?
