Lizzo, ‘Just Mercy’ Win Top Honors At NAACP Image Awards

“Unlike other awards shows, we actually have black nominees,” Anderson said. He may well have been talking about “Just Mercy,” the acclaimed film that was snubbed by the Oscars, Golden Globes and other ceremonies in the long awards season.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Lizzo was named entertainer of the year and “Just Mercy” won best motion picture, best actor and best supporting actor Saturday at the NAACP Image Awards, as the show that recognizes entertainers of color ladled honors on the film that was snubbed by bigger shows throughout awards season.

“We are such a beautiful people, this is just a reminder of all the beautiful things that we can do,” said Lizzo as she accepted the night’s last and biggest award, leaping and dancing off the stage at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium as the show ended.

Host Anthony Anderson of “black-ish” opened the show, telecast on BET for the first time, with a monologue that took a shot at the lack of diversity at the Oscars and Hollywood’s other ceremonies that handed out awards earlier in the year.

“Unlike other awards shows, we actually have black nominees,” Anderson said. He may well have been talking about “Just Mercy,” the acclaimed film that was snubbed by the Oscars, Golden Globes and other ceremonies in the long awards season.

Michael B. Jordan won best actor in a motion picture for his role as a crusading defense attorney in the film, and Jamie Foxx won best supporting actor for the wrongly convicted man he fought for.

“This project is a lot bigger than me. It’s about every person that’s wrongfully convicted and sitting in a jail cell right now,” Jordan said as he accepted the award.

Foxx won his fifth career image award for his role in “Just Mercy,” saying, “Thank you so much, black people, African-Americans, and everything else we are.”

He added, “Its always great to get it from black folks because we are so talented.”

Lupita Nyong’o won best actress in a film for her role in “Us,” and 15-year Marsai Martin won best supporting actress for her role in “Little” over superstar names including Jennifer Lopez, Janelle Monáe and Octavia Spencer.

Martin’s award went with three more she won Friday for her roles in “Little” and “black-ish” during the non-televised first night of the Image Awards.

“Thank you to all the beautiful black girls out there who inspire me every day,” Martin said as she accepted the supporting actress award.

Martin’s “black-ish” cast mate Tracee Ellis Ross won best actress in a TV comedy series, her ninth career Image Award.

“I love being a part of this ever-growing chorus of black women owning our legacies,” Ross said as she accepted the award.

It was a big Image Awards all-round for “black-ish,” which took home seven, including best TV comedy and best actor in a TV comedy for host Anderson.

The NAACP gave its Chairman’s Award, which goes to people who show exemplary public service and “create agents of change,” to civil rights legend U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia.

“The NAACP has been like a bridge over troubled waters,” Lewis, who is suffering from pancreatic cancer, said in a recorded acceptance speech from Washington. “We’re going to have some more troubled waters, and we’re going to need the NAACP.”

Rihanna received the NAACP President’s Award for special achievement and distinguished public service. She called for racial, religious and cultural unity during her acceptance speech.

“If there’s anything that I’ve learned, it’s that we can only fix this world together,” Rihanna said. “We can’t do it divided. Tell your friends to pull up.”

She added, “We’ve been denied opportunities since the beginning of time, and still we prevail … Imagine what we can do if we do it together.”

Beyoncé was the big winner at Friday night’s non-televised gala, winning six awards, including outstanding female artist and album. She also won outstanding duo/group for her collaboration with her 8-year-old daughter Blue Ivy, and Saint Jhn.

Pioneering Black Mathematician Katherine Johnson Has Died

In 1961, Johnson did trajectory analysis for Alan Shepard’s Freedom 7 Mission, the first to carry an American into space. The next year, she manually verified the calculations of a nascent NASA computer, an IBM 7090, which plotted John Glenn’s orbits around the planet.

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — NASA says Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who worked on NASA’s early space missions and was portrayed in the film “Hidden Figures,” about pioneering black female aerospace workers, has died.

In a Monday morning tweet, the space agency said it celebrates her 101 years of life and her legacy of excellence and breaking down racial and social barriers.

Johnson was one of the so-called “computers” who calculated rocket trajectories and earth orbits by hand during NASA’s early years.

Until 1958, Johnson and other black women worked in a racially segregated computing unit at what is now called Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Their work was the focus of the Oscar-nominated 2016 film.

In 1961, Johnson worked on the first mission to carry an American into space. In 1962, she verified computer calculations that plotted John Glenn’s earth orbits.

At age 97, Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Johnson focused on airplanes and other research at first. But her work at NASA’s Langley Research Center eventually shifted to Project Mercury, the nation’s first human space program.

“Our office computed all the (rocket) trajectories,” Johnson told The Virginian-Pilot newspaper in 2012. “You tell me when and where you want it to come down, and I will tell you where and when and how to launch it.”

In 1961, Johnson did trajectory analysis for Alan Shepard’s Freedom 7 Mission, the first to carry an American into space. The next year, she manually verified the calculations of a nascent NASA computer, an IBM 7090, which plotted John Glenn’s orbits around the planet.

DC’s National Children’s Museum Is Now Open

“There’s a magical moment of entry as soon as visitors enter the front door,” says the museum’s president and CEO Crystal Bowyer.

Contributed by Diamond Bullock

After numerous delays, the National Children’s Museum has finally reopened today. The museum’s new location is 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

This is the first opening of a children’s museum in DC since the original H Street NE location was closed in 2003. That location operated from 1979 to 2004. There were multiple plans and promises of a permanent relocation and reopening, but the museum operated only temporarily at the National Harbor from 2009 to 2015.

The new location consists of exhibits dedicated to science and children, including the Dream Machine, a playing structure where children can climb, crawl, slide, and, overall, have a great time. Additionally, there is a space for infants and toddlers called Little Movers, as well as the Data Science Alley presented by Amazon and Tinkerers Studio presented by Microsoft among other company-sponsored exhibits. Besides the permanent exhibits, there will be daily pop-up experiences as well as weekend family workshops.

Architectural Digest spoke with the museum’s president and CEO Crystal Bowyer. She touched on the renovated museum’s new exhibits.

“There’s a magical moment of entry as soon as visitors enter the front door.”

To visit the museum, timed entry tickets must be purchased either online at the National Children’s Museum website or directly from the museum as walk-up tickets (Walk-up tickets are limited and based on capacity). Admission is $10.95 for adults and children over the age of one.

WATCH LIVE: Kobe And Gianna Bryant Public Memorial

Bryant’s family, dozens of sports greats and many major figures in Bryant’s public life are expected to attend.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Thousands of mourners will gather in Staples Center on Monday to say farewell to Kobe and Gianna Bryant.

The basketball superstar and his 13-year-old daughter will be honored in a public memorial at the arena where Bryant played for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Kobe and Gianna Bryant died along with seven others on Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash.

The Celebration of Life will feature speakers reflecting on Kobe Bryant’s impact on his sport and the world, along with music and retrospectives on Bryant’s on-court achievements. Bryant became active in film, television and writing after he retired from basketball in 2016.

Bryant’s family, dozens of sports greats and many major figures in Bryant’s public life are expected to attend.

Staples Center is sold out for the memorial. The money made from ticket sales will be given to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, which supports youth sports programs in underserved communities and teaches sports to girls and women.

Bryant played his entire 20-year NBA career with the Lakers, including the final 17 seasons at Staples Center, which opened in 1999. The five-time NBA champion’s two retired jersey numbers — 8 and 24 — hang high above the arena where he became the third-leading scorer in league history until Lakers star LeBron James passed him on the night before Bryant’s death.

Bryant’s death caused an outpouring of grief across Los Angeles, where he remained the city’s most popular athlete into retirement. Dozens of public memorials and murals have been installed around the sprawling metropolis, and thousands of fans gathered daily outside Staples Center to commiserate after the crash.

Symbolic meanings will run throughout the ceremony, which will be held on a 24-foot-by-24-foot stage. Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s wife and Gianna’s mother, chose Feb. 24 as the date in honor of the uniform numbers of Kobe and Gianna, who wore No. 2 on her youth basketball teams.

A private funeral was held for Kobe and Gianna Bryant in Orange County on Feb. 7.

Badu’s ‘Meow Meow’ Premium Incense Sells Out In Minutes

Remember when Erykah Badu announced she was dropping an incense that smelled of her “Secret Garden” amongst other items on her new Badu Worldwide Market?

Well, it looks like she was really onto something because her “Badussy” aroma incense sold out in a whopping 19 minutes! It seems that everything that Badu turns to gold or into something that dresses somewhat weird and tends to float around on a cloud!

She recently stated in an interview on the rumor of her so-called powers,“There’s an urban legend that my p***y changes men,” she says about the rumors that’s been going around for years. “The men that I fall in love with, and fall in love with me, change jobs and lives.”  So will you be buying some Badussy incense when they hit the market again? I already placed an order for 10-packs! Did I forget to say they are $50!

Black In Space

By Jacquie Gales Webb

Congratulations to Emmy-award winning producer Laurens Grant on her film Black In Space: Breaking the Color Barrier that will air on the Smithsonian Channel February 24th.

Following the screening of the film in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture’s Oprah Winfrey Theater, PBS NewsHour White House Correspondent Yamiche Alcindor moderated a panel about the film that included Grant, Curator Damion Thomas, PhD, Major General Charles F. Bolden, Jr., USMC (Ret.) 12th NASA Administrator, and Col. Frederick D. Gregory, USAF (Ret.), Former Astronaut and NASA Deputy Administrator.

America’s experiences during the Civil Rights Movement and the Space Race are well documented. However, few know about the decades-long battle between the U.S. and the Soviet Union to be the first superpower to bring diversity to the skies. Grant’s documentary shines a light on the astronauts who were part of this little-known chapter of the Cold War and the race to put the first black astronaut into orbit.

Producer Laurens Grant is a 3-time Emmy and Peabody award-winning filmmaker and a Sundance Institute filmmaker fellow. Her filmmaking career has taken her all over the world, including the United States, Latin America, Europe and Africa. Grant worked with the award-winning team of Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Mark Herzog for the 7-part series on The Nineties.

Verdicts Reached In Some Harvey Weinstein Counts

Reports Indicate Jury Has Reached Verdict In Weinstein Case

(New York, NY) — Reports indicate that the jury may have reached a verdict in three of the five counts brought against disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein. Several outlets are now reporting that jurors will continue to deliberate in an attempt to reach a complete consensus on all five counts. Weinstein has been charged with both rape and predatory sexual assault, with several different women testifying against him during the weeks-long-trial. Earlier today, we learned that jurors were no longer requesting any reading back of testimony, something they’d asked for since the start of deliberations.

At the conclusion of these proceedings, Weinstein faces similar charges in Los Angeles. He’s maintained that all of his sexual encounters have been consensual.

Maryland college cancels classes after racist graffiti found

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) — Officials at a Maryland university canceled classes for a day after graffiti threatening black students with lynching was discovered scrawled in academic buildings. News outlets report that the FBI has joined the investigation after two messages were found Wednesday at Salisbury University. University President Charles A. Wight said he canceled Thursday’s classes to give the campus community “the opportunity to come together to process” what happened, support each other and figure out how to move forward. Classes were set to resume Friday. It was the second time in three months that such graffiti had been found at the school.

Nene Leakes Undecided About Returning to ‘Atlanta Housewives’

“I will tell you, as far as coming back, I feel like this show is my baby. I started this show. But I also feel like I don’t want to be in a group where I feel like everyone is attacking and being very malicious,” she explained.

Contributed by Amber Cooper

Earlier this week, Nene Leakes appeared on the show ‘The Talk,’ where she opened up about possibly not returning to the hit reality show, ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA).”

According to Lovebscott.com, Leakes admits to the hosts, “I will tell you, as far as coming back, I feel like this show is my baby. I started this show. But I also feel like I don’t want to be in a group where I feel like everyone is attacking and being very malicious,” she explained.

Leakes began ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ in 2008 and has become a major part of the franchise. She agrees with Sharon Osbourne, a cohost on ‘The Talk’ when she says there “ain’t no show” without NeNe on it.

The interview ends on a more positive note when Leakes says, “But you know, every season when the show ends, what me and my team do, we get together and talk about what’s best for me.” She goes on to say, “So hopefully ‘Real Housewives’ is best for me, I don’t know.. Yeah, very undecided.”

Leakes is currently making appearances on ‘ExtraTV’ and ‘Access Daily.’ New episodes of ‘RHOA’ air every Sunday on Bravo.

BYNDfit Becomes DC’s First Fitness Hall

“A fitness hall is kind of like a food hall, but for working out. The space will include a traditional gym with weights and machines, but they will include 250 other workout classes such as SoulCycle, Zumba, Yoga and even Virtual Reality workouts.”

A fitness hall is kind of like a food hall, but for working out. The space will include a traditional gym with weights and machines, but they will include 250 other workout classes such as SoulCycle, Zumba, Yoga and even Virtual Reality workouts, according to Washingtonian Mag.

The BYNDfit founders have backgrounds in tech, real estate, and startups and looked to create a space fix the “broken” fitness industry.

“They saw the industry as fragmented – almost every gym and studio lacked the options, versatility, and technology they enjoyed in so many other aspects of their daily lives,” reads the company’s about page.

They offer two memberships ranging from $149 to $199 per month. Members can enjoy amenities such as full spectrum infared saunas, access to personal trainers and a juice bar along with the wide range of workouts.

BYNDfit will be the first of its kind in DC. There was a soft launch in November 2019, but it will officially open on March 31, 2020.

The hall is located at 650 F St. NW Washington, DC, 20004 in Chinatown across from the Capital One Arena.

Victoria’s Secret Sold

A diminished Victoria’s Secret sold as women look elsewhere

NEW YORK (AP) — Victoria’s Secret once defined sexy with its leggy supermodels prancing around in their bras and over-sized angel wings. Now the company is being sold as women increasingly look for styles that more realistically fit their body type. The company’s owner, L Brands, said Thursday that the private-equity firm Sycamore Brands will buy 55% of Victoria’s Secret for about $525 million. The Columbus, Ohio, company will keep the remaining 45% stake. The selling price signifies a marked decline for a brand with hundreds of stores that booked about $7 billion in revenue last year.  Shares of the company’s owner, L Brands, slid 7% Thursday before recovering.

Trump Confidant Sentenced To Prison

Judge Sentences Roger Stone To 40 Months

(Washington, DC) — A federal judge is sentencing President Trump’s ally Roger Stone to a little more than three years in prison for obstruction, witness tampering and making false statements to Congress. The judge gave him 40 months for one count and 18 months for the others plus a 20-thousand-dollar fine. However, he will serve them at the same time. Prosecutors had originally pushed for a sentence of between seven to nine years. However, Attorney General Bill Barr overruled them and asked for a lighter sentence. The President has claimed his political mentor was treated unfairly. Barr’s decision to step in caused four prosecutors on the case to resign. It also led to about two thousand former Department of Justice officials to write a letter calling for Barr to resign.

Democratic Debate Features Lots of Fireworks

Washington, D.C. (Thursday, February 29, 2020) – Lots of fireworks from Las Vegas last night as the democratic presidential candidates hit the stage for the 9th debate. It was, by most accounts, a literal slugfest with many of the candidates throwing jabs at newcomer former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Six candidates took to the stage with healthcare taking up a major part of the discussion along with who would be the most fit candidate to take on President Donald Trump in the upcoming November general election. Many of the candidates piled on Bloomberg, taking jabs at his wealth and former stop and frisk policy.  Senator Elizabeth Warren came out swinging first.  “A billionaire who calls women fat broads and horse faced lesbians.  And no I’m not talking about Donald Trump.  I’m talking about Mayor Bloomberg,” said Warren.

Bloomberg, who was once a republican, was forced to defend his personal wealth while Bernie Sanders tried to beat back questions on his health.  As for Joe Biden, he criticized Bloomberg on his stop and frisk policy. “Bloomberg ended up throwing 5 million black men up against the wall,” said Biden.

Pete Buttigieg went after Bloomberg and Sanders warning that one threatened to burn down the Democratic Party and the other was trying to buy it.

The race for the White House is expected to intensify in the coming weeks. Voters in Nevada head to the polls Saturday and South Carolina follows on February 29th.

Florida Can’t Bar Felons From Vote Over Fines And Fees

Appellate Court Upholds Challenge To Ex-Felon Voting Law

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A federal appeals court says Florida cannot bar felons who served their time from registering to vote simply because they have failed to pay all fines and fees stemming from their cases. A three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday upheld a Tallahassee federal judge’s decision that the law implementing Amendment 4 amounted to an unfair poll tax. Gov. Ron DeSantis plans to appeal. Amendment 4 was approved in 2018 to allow as many as 1.6 million ex-felons to regain their right to vote. The Republican-led Legislature later passed a law saying they must first pay any fines and fees.
