“Our business guests are still very strong, but I think that we should be anticipating some change in the tourism demand, depending on how long this runs for.”
Washington D.C. is expecting a sharp decline in tourism in the coming months due to the coronavirus.
“The fact that the number one market for Washington, D.C. is China and nobody in China can physically fly out of the country is a big concern,” Elliot Ferguson, president of Destination D.C., says in DCist, the city’s tourism-promotion arm.
China has been the top country for tourists coming to D.C. since 2013. Over 226,000 Chinese visitors came to The District in 2018, a 25% from 2017, but they stayed for longer periods of time, according to Desitination D.C.
“We’re watching this very carefully and realizing that until flights are allowed back in the U.S., we’re looking at a no-go in terms of the potential for visitation,” Ferguson said according to Bisnow. “But we’re cautiously optimistic that this is something we’ll be able to rebound from, and we’re looking at the opportunities for us in other international markets that continue to strengthen.”
This may also affect business travel as well. Ferguson says the International Association of Dental Research’s conference in the mid-March at the Washington Convention Center will most likely see a decline in attendance due to the 700 memebrs that live in China.
It’s being reported all of the original cast members will return for the reboot.

Pugh, with the assistance of longtime aide Gary Brown Jr., carefully carried out the scheme over more than seven years, starting when she was a Maryland state senator and into her tenure as Baltimore’s mayor. Her clients included the University of Maryland Medical System, health insurers and other organizations.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday in a lucrative, years long scheme that sold her self-published children’s books to nonprofits and foundations to promote her political career and fund her run for mayor.
Pugh, 69, pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy and tax evasion charges in November. The veteran Democratic politician was elected mayor in 2016 and resigned in May after authorities began investigating bulk sales of “Healthy Holly” books that netted her hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Pugh’s attorneys have suggested a sentence of 366 days, while prosecutors have asked for nearly five years.
Prosecutors accused Pugh of double selling the books, keeping many for self-promotion purposes and failing to deliver them to institutions they were purchased for, including the Baltimore City Public Schools. Pugh used the proceeds to fund straw donations to her mayoral campaign and buy a new house, according to the sentencing memoradum filed by prosecutors.
Brown and another Pugh associate, Roslyn Wedington, await sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy and tax fraud.

Howard University will join the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) on Friday, Feb. 28 for a condensed screening of the HBO documentary True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality beginning at 7 p.m. in the Howard University Law School’s Dunbarton Chapel located at 2900 Van Ness St. NW.
The abbreviated film screening and discussion is part of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), which works to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment, and racial inequality. The documentary follows the life and career of public interest attorney Bryan Stevenson, who is the founder of EJI. For more than three decades, Stevenson has advocated on behalf of the poor, the incarcerated, and the condemned.
Following the condensed film screening, a panel discussion will be moderated by Squire Patton Boggs law firm partner J.R. Clark.
Doors open at 6.30pm at the Howard University Law School’s Dunbarton Chapel located at 2900 Van Ness St. NW. The event is free and open to the public. To RSVP, please visit https://truejusticescreening.eventbrite.com.
According to HBO:
Told primarily in his own words, True Justice shares Bryan Stevenson’s experience with a criminal justice system that, he asserts, “treats you better if you’re rich and guilty than if you’re poor and innocent.” The burden of facing this system is explored in candid interviews with associates, close family members and clients.
This feature documentary focuses on Stevenson’s life and career – particularly his indictment of the U.S. criminal justice system for its role in codifying modern systemic racism – and tracks the intertwined histories of slavery, lynching, segregation and mass incarceration. Highlighting watershed moments involving cases and clients, True Justice offers a rare glimpse into the human struggle that is required when the poor and people of color are wrongly condemned or unfairly sentenced, and explores the personal toll it has taken on Stevenson and his colleagues.

Trump says two justices should sit out cases, but they are the ones who are allowed to decide.
The remarks critical of Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor came during a news conference in India, where Trump was wrapping up a 36-hour visit. They followed tweets in a similar vein. Justices decide for themselves when to step aside from cases, and it is highly unlikely either justice would sit out cases involving Trump.

So what are you doing for Lent 2020???
Here are a few ideas 🙂
Amazon plans to open another type of grocery store in Los Angeles sometime this year, but the company said it won’t use the cashier-less technology at that location and has kept other details under wraps.
NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon is aiming to kill the supermarket checkout line.
The online retailing giant is opening its first cashier-less supermarket, the latest sign that Amazon is serious about shaking up the $800 billion grocery industry.
At the new store, opening Tuesday in Seattle, shoppers can grab milk or eggs and walk out without checking out or opening their wallets. Shoppers scan a smartphone app to enter the store. Cameras and sensors track what’s taken off shelves. Items are charged to an Amazon account after leaving.
Called Amazon Go Grocery, the new store is an expansion of its 2-year-old chain of Amazon Go convenience stores. At 10,400 square feet, the supermarket is more than five times the size of the smaller stores, and stocks more items beyond the sodas and sandwiches found at Amazon Go. The new market stocks fresh baked bread, blood oranges, butternut squash and other food to whip up dinner or stock the fridge.
Amazon is not new to groceries. It made a splash in 2017 when it bought Whole Foods and its 500 stores. It’s also been expanding its online grocery delivery service. But it’s still far behind rival Walmart, the nation’s largest grocer, which has more than 4,700 stores. Walmart has also found success with its online grocery service, that lets shoppers buy online and then pickup at stores.
Amazon plans to open another type of grocery store in Los Angeles sometime this year, but the company said it won’t use the cashier-less technology at that location and has kept other details under wraps.
At the new Seattle store, families can shop together with just one phone scanning everyone in. Anything they grab from the shelf will be added to the tab of the person who signed them in. But shopper’s shouldn’t help a stranger reach something from the top shelf: Amazon warns that grabbing an item for someone else means you’ll be charged for it.
While cashier-less stores remove a major annoyance for customers, waiting in long lines to pay, it also takes away parts of supermarket shopping that some customers may miss. There’s no one to bag groceries at Amazon Go Grocery. Instead, Amazon gives out reusable bags so shoppers can fill them as they shop. And there’s no deli counter, butcher or fishmonger. Instead, packaged sliced ham, steaks and salmon fillets are sold in refrigerated shelves.
Other retailers and startups have been racing to create similar cashier-less technology. Earlier this month, for example, 7-Eleven said it is testing a cashier-less store inside its Irving, Texas, offices.
Amazon declined to say if it plans to open more cashier-less grocery stores. Since it launched its first Amazon Go store in 2018, the Seattle-based company has opened about 25 of them in big cities, such as Chicago, New York and San Francisco.

Balloon releases may soon become a thing of the past in Montgomery County as lawmakers consider a ban on the practice. Offenders could be fined $500.
County Council Vice President Tom Hucker is introducing a measure today that he says is about protecting the environment from those who intentionally release non-biodegradable balloons into the air.
If approved, the ban would prohibit people from releasing helium-filled latex or mylar balloons into the air. Balloons released accidentally by a child, without the permission of an adult, would not fall under the ban. Those in violation could face a fine up to $500.
A similar measure was passed by Maryland state lawmakers last week and is now on the desk of Governor Larry Hogan.
“We will not be able to see Gigi go to high school,” Vanessa Bryant said, her voice breaking. “We didn’t get the chance to teach her how to drive a car. I won’t be able to tell her how gorgeous she looks on her wedding day. … Gigi would have most likely become the best player in the WNBA. She would have made a huge difference for women’s basketball.”
BEYONCÉ, ALICIA, CHRISTINA AND ‘MARIA’
Practically everything about what would happen at Kobe Bryant’s memorial was a mystery to nearly everyone watching, and when Beyoncé took the stage to open the celebration of life, a gasp went up among the until-then subdued crowd at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The big screen in the arena soon showed that many major entertainment figures were in the audience along with the expected NBA stars, including Jennifer Lopez, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.
The memorial’s other musical moments would provide their own surprises. A harp and grand piano that a scrambling crew set up on stage between speakers led to speculation about who else would perform. The harp accompanied Christina Aguilera as she sang “Ave Maria,” a nod to the Bryant family’s Catholic faith and to Kobe Bryant’s Italian upbringing. The piano was for Alicia Keys, who used it to play Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” which the crowd had just learned the usually non-musical Bryant had learned to play for his wife’s wedding anniversary.

SHAKEN KIMMEL SETS THE TONE
The crowd was more perplexed than surprised moments after Beyonce’s polished opening when the Staples Center announcer said a “good friend of the Bryants and the Lakers family is here to help guide us through this morning’s celebration,” and introduced not a priest or pastor, but Jimmy Kimmel. The late-night host, professional prankster, and sometime Academy Awards emcee agreed he was an odd choice, but his shaken, tearful delivery set the tone for the deep emotions that were to follow. “You picked the wrong person to guide you through, I’m going to tell you that right now,” a choked-up Kimmel said.
Even more tears came as he listed the names of the nine killed in the helicopter crash, and he was practically weeping when he said of Kobe and Gianna Bryant, “everywhere you look you see his face, his number, Gigi’s face, Gigi’s number.” He drew laughs from the tears when he said those places included ”Boston, for God’s sake. In places where he would be booed on the court, Kobe was missed. Even the great Boston Celtic Bill Russell (who sat nearby in the crowd) wore number 24 and a Lakers jersey to yesterday’s game. I knew he would come to us eventually.”

A DAUGHTER, AND A FUTURE, LOST
Vanessa Bryant would soon take the room to new depths of emotion as she paid tribute to the 13-year-old daughter and the husband she lost. Deep silence ran through the crowd of some 20,000 at Staples Center, broken only by sniffs that came even from the usually emotion-free press section of the arena, as she described the imagined future a mother would never know for her child.
TAURASI AND IONESCU, KOBE AND GIANNA
Everyone expected to see and hear from legends of the NBA game, but giants of the women’s game showed viewers how much this side of basketball also shaped Bryant’s life as he coached Gianna’s team and fueled her future career. Both WNBA all-time great Diana Taurasi and collegiate all-time great Sabrina Ionescu said they learned and used Kobe’s signature moves. “He taught me his step-back, he told me that if I could bring that to my game it would be over for any defender trying to guard me,”
A STAR AMONG STARS
Even in an arena loaded with superstars from sports and entertainment, Michael Jordan taking the stage left the audience awestruck. The crowd had been growing a little restless after an unbroken string of speakers, and some headed for restroom and concession trips after 90 minutes of sitting still, but when the Chicago Bulls legend walked on to stage, Staples Center snapped back to full attention, and when Jordan was crying from his first words, the room knew it was witnessing a truly rare moment from the superstar.
He even acknowledged that his tears invoked the photo meme that dominated social media several years ago. “Now he’s got me,” Jordan said of Bryant. “I’m going to have to look at another crying meme for the next” and was cut off by laughs and howls from the crowd.
BRYANT’S LAST TEXTS FROM THE AIR
Kobe’s best friend, former agent and current Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka had the crowd riveted when he described the last messages Bryant sent him, moments before the helicopter crash that killed him. Pelinka said he was in church and Bryant was in the air when Bryant texted him to ask if he knew a baseball agent who could help a hard-working, ambitious girl get an internship. The story took a truly touching twist when Pelinka revealed that the girl was Lexi Altobelli, the surviving daughter of John Altobelli, who died in the crash with Bryant.
“Kobe’s last human act was heroic,” Pelinka said. “He wanted to use his platform to bless and shape a young girl’s future.”

SHAQ OUT
It was not clear when Shaquille O’Neal took the stage that he would be the final speaker, but in retrospect it could not have been more fitting that the man whose name will always be tied to Bryant’s went last in the building where they built their legacy together.
The always playful Shaq showed why he and the refined, serious Bryant were such an odd couple. “Sometimes like immature kids, we argued, we fought, we bantered or insulted each other,” O’Neal said. But, he added, ”when the cameras were turned off we threw a wink at each other and said, ‘Let’s go and whoop some ass.” And he showed Bryant wasn’t above having the occasional outrageous moment himself. He recalled an early conflict with Bryant, who wasn’t passing as much as O’Neal would’ve liked. O’Neal said he told Kobe: “There’s no ‘I’ in team.” Kobe responded: “Yeah, but there’s an ‘M-E,’” followed by an F-bomb that broke the somber tone and made the crowd roar.
37-year-old Marvin Diaz of Lewisdale is in jail in Prince George’s County, Md. charged with raping a 14-year-old boy. Police also uncovered more than 1,000 sexually explicit photographs and videos of children.
Police found more than1,000 photographs and videos when they searched his home that contained child pornographic images. Officials say the material was from September 2016 through December 2019. Authorities believe Diaz may have sexually assaulted other young victims.
Diaz was arrested February 20th after officials say they got more than two dozen tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about Diaz. The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force of the department’s Criminal Investigation Division began the investigation following the tips.
Diaz is being held without bond.

Kobe Bryant’s widow sues helicopter operator for deaths
The wrongful death lawsuit filed by Vanessa Bryant in Los Angeles
Superior Court said the pilot was careless and negligent by flying
in cloudy conditions Jan. 26 and should have aborted the flight.
Pilot Ara Zobayan was among the nine people killed in the crash.

The lawsuit names Island Express Helicopters Inc. and also targets
Zobayan’s legal representative, listed only as “Doe 1†until a name
can be determined.
Vanessa Bryant’s lawsuit asserts that Zobayan was negligent in
eight different ways, including failing to properly assess the
weather, flying into conditions he wasn’t cleared for and failing
to control the helicopter.
The lawsuit was filed as a public memorial service for Kobe Bryant,
his daughter, and all the victims, including Zobayan, was being
held at the arena where Bryant played most of his career.
Calls to Island Express seeking comment were not answered and its
voicemail was full.
The company issued a statement Jan. 30 on its website saying the
shock of the crash had prompted it to suspend service until it was
appropriate for staff and customers.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause
of the crash into a hillside in Calabasas on the outskirts of Los
Angeles County.

The conviction is viewed by many as a long overdue reckoning for Weinstein after years of whispers about his behavior that helped to give rise to #MeToo.
It’s not clear how many years in prison Weinstein will get. Sentencing will not happen until a later date. But he was ordered to jail immediately after the conviction. Under sentencing guidelines for the charge of criminal sex act in the first degree, he could get a minimum of five years and a maximum of 25 years behind bars.
Weinstein was acquitted on the more serious charges of predatory sexual assault involving the two women (Jessica Mann and Miriam Haley).

“Unlike other awards shows, we actually have black nominees,” Anderson said. He may well have been talking about “Just Mercy,” the acclaimed film that was snubbed by the Oscars, Golden Globes and other ceremonies in the long awards season.
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Lizzo was named entertainer of the year and “Just Mercy” won best motion picture, best actor and best supporting actor Saturday at the NAACP Image Awards, as the show that recognizes entertainers of color ladled honors on the film that was snubbed by bigger shows throughout awards season.
“We are such a beautiful people, this is just a reminder of all the beautiful things that we can do,” said Lizzo as she accepted the night’s last and biggest award, leaping and dancing off the stage at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium as the show ended.
Host Anthony Anderson of “black-ish” opened the show, telecast on BET for the first time, with a monologue that took a shot at the lack of diversity at the Oscars and Hollywood’s other ceremonies that handed out awards earlier in the year.
“Unlike other awards shows, we actually have black nominees,” Anderson said. He may well have been talking about “Just Mercy,” the acclaimed film that was snubbed by the Oscars, Golden Globes and other ceremonies in the long awards season.
Michael B. Jordan won best actor in a motion picture for his role as a crusading defense attorney in the film, and Jamie Foxx won best supporting actor for the wrongly convicted man he fought for.
“This project is a lot bigger than me. It’s about every person that’s wrongfully convicted and sitting in a jail cell right now,” Jordan said as he accepted the award.
Foxx won his fifth career image award for his role in “Just Mercy,” saying, “Thank you so much, black people, African-Americans, and everything else we are.”
He added, “Its always great to get it from black folks because we are so talented.”
Lupita Nyong’o won best actress in a film for her role in “Us,” and 15-year Marsai Martin won best supporting actress for her role in “Little” over superstar names including Jennifer Lopez, Janelle Monáe and Octavia Spencer.
Martin’s award went with three more she won Friday for her roles in “Little” and “black-ish” during the non-televised first night of the Image Awards.
“Thank you to all the beautiful black girls out there who inspire me every day,” Martin said as she accepted the supporting actress award.
Martin’s “black-ish” cast mate Tracee Ellis Ross won best actress in a TV comedy series, her ninth career Image Award.
“I love being a part of this ever-growing chorus of black women owning our legacies,” Ross said as she accepted the award.
It was a big Image Awards all-round for “black-ish,” which took home seven, including best TV comedy and best actor in a TV comedy for host Anderson.
The NAACP gave its Chairman’s Award, which goes to people who show exemplary public service and “create agents of change,” to civil rights legend U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia.
“The NAACP has been like a bridge over troubled waters,” Lewis, who is suffering from pancreatic cancer, said in a recorded acceptance speech from Washington. “We’re going to have some more troubled waters, and we’re going to need the NAACP.”
Rihanna received the NAACP President’s Award for special achievement and distinguished public service. She called for racial, religious and cultural unity during her acceptance speech.
“If there’s anything that I’ve learned, it’s that we can only fix this world together,” Rihanna said. “We can’t do it divided. Tell your friends to pull up.”
She added, “We’ve been denied opportunities since the beginning of time, and still we prevail … Imagine what we can do if we do it together.”
Beyoncé was the big winner at Friday night’s non-televised gala, winning six awards, including outstanding female artist and album. She also won outstanding duo/group for her collaboration with her 8-year-old daughter Blue Ivy, and Saint Jhn.
In 1961, Johnson did trajectory analysis for Alan Shepard’s Freedom 7 Mission, the first to carry an American into space. The next year, she manually verified the calculations of a nascent NASA computer, an IBM 7090, which plotted John Glenn’s orbits around the planet.
HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — NASA says Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who worked on NASA’s early space missions and was portrayed in the film “Hidden Figures,” about pioneering black female aerospace workers, has died.
In a Monday morning tweet, the space agency said it celebrates her 101 years of life and her legacy of excellence and breaking down racial and social barriers.
Johnson was one of the so-called “computers” who calculated rocket trajectories and earth orbits by hand during NASA’s early years.
Until 1958, Johnson and other black women worked in a racially segregated computing unit at what is now called Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Their work was the focus of the Oscar-nominated 2016 film.

In 1961, Johnson worked on the first mission to carry an American into space. In 1962, she verified computer calculations that plotted John Glenn’s earth orbits.
At age 97, Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
Johnson focused on airplanes and other research at first. But her work at NASA’s Langley Research Center eventually shifted to Project Mercury, the nation’s first human space program.
“Our office computed all the (rocket) trajectories,” Johnson told The Virginian-Pilot newspaper in 2012. “You tell me when and where you want it to come down, and I will tell you where and when and how to launch it.”
