House Committee Mulls DC Statehood

D.C. Statehood Up For Vote

(Washington, DC) — For the first time since 1993, the District of Columbia’s bid for statehood comes up for a vote by members of Congress. The House Oversight and Reform Committee has scheduled a vote on House Bill 51 which sets the wheels in motion for the District to become the 51st state of the United States. With 224 co-sponsors, the measure is expected to pass the committee and make it to the House floor for a vote. According to the D.C. Statehood Office, 86-percent of voters in the District support statehood. A recent Gallup poll however found most Americans are not in favor of statehood for Washington, D.C. If approved by Congress, a constitutional amendment is still needed to make D.C. a state.

Vanessa Bryant poured her heart out today on Instagram two weeks after a helicopter crash near Los Angeles. Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama‘s production company, Higher Ground, won its first Academy Award.

The couple did not attend the ceremony but sent their congratulations to the filmmakers Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert, who accepted the award, via Twitter.

“So glad to see their heart and honesty recognized—because the best stories are rarely tidy or perfect. But that’s where the truth so often lies,” said Michelle Obama.

‘Hair Love’ Snags An Oscar Win

Deandre and his mom were the “official guests of the Oscar-nominated team” behind “Hair Love.”

One of the most touching wins of this year’s Oscars went to “Hair Love,” a short film about a the love between a father and daughter showcased through caring for her hair. The film took home the award for Best Animated Short Film.

The short film by Director Matthew A. Cherry, was released by Sony Pictures Animation in last December.  Some of the producers include Gabrielle Union-Wade, Dwayne Wade and Jordan Peele, and features Issa Rae.

Cherry was joined on the red carpet by Deandre Arnold, a high school student from Texas that was told he could not attend his graduation unless he cut off his dreadlocks. because they violated school dress codes.

Arnold’s story stirred national outrage and prompted action against hair discrimination. Celebrities rounded up support for the teenager. He appeared on an episode of “The Ellen Show” where host Ellen DeGeneres and musician Alicia Keys presented him with a $20,000 for his college tuition.

Gabrielle Union-Wade and Dwayne Wade two of the “Hair Love” producers invited Arnold and his mom to be “the official guests of the Oscar-nominated team” and walk the red carpet with the director on “CBS this Morning.”

Protecting Against Coronavirus

Masks that people are using to protect against the coronavirus are harder to come by in the DC area.

(Washington, DC) — As cases of coronavirus continue to grow, the number of face masks in the Washington area are dwindling. Fears over China’s coronavirus have found face masks selling out at numerous pharmacies and medical supply stores. With China reporting more than 31-thousand cases, U.S. officials say the virus’ risk to Americans is low, but that is not stopping people from running out to the store to purchase the masks. In Northeast Washington, the Reliance Pharmacy on Minnesota Avenue reports it ran out of masks last week while a CVS store on Bladensburg Road says it hasn’t had the item in stock for two weeks. Some doctors argue the face masks aren’t design to stop the transmission of respiratory illnesses adding that the best way to avoid infection is to wash your hands and not touch your face.

Anyone who faces discrimination because of their hairstyles can seek a civil penalty of up to five-thousand-dollars through the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights. The county said the aim of the new law was meant to limit prejudice felt by residents. Montgomery County becomes the first local jurisdiction to introduce such a law.

Anne Arundel County Police are saying two officers were shot after trying to arrest a possible murder suspect during a traffic stop. Sgt. Pelosi And Trump Feud

Tensions rose between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Trump today.

(Washington, DC) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says President Trump treated the State of the Union address like a reality TV show. Talking to reporters at the Capitol, Pelosi said Trump’s speech was riddled with falsehoods and had no connection to reality. She argued that Trump’s claim of inheriting a mess was wrong. Pelosi insisted that Trump inherited a strong and growing economy from President Obama. Pelosi ripped up Trump’s speech when he was finished on Tuesday night. She said the address was “beneath the dignity of the White House.” Pelosi also slammed Republicans who chanted “Four more years!” She called it totally inappropriate and said it was a serious breach of congressional decorum.  At the National Prayer breakfast the President also criticized Mitt Romney, not by name, using faith to do something that was wrong.

Gayle King Responds To Backlash After Viral Video

From Snoop Dogg to Vivica Fox, people are outraged with how Gayle King spoke on the late Kobe Bryant.

Contributed by Jordyn Fields

CBS This Morning host, Gayle King, interviewed former WNBA star Lisa Leslie on the passing of Kobe Bryant. During the interview King brought up the subject of the rape case that was brought against Bryant in 2003.

King asked question’s such as ” It’s been said that his legacy is complicated, because of a sexual assault charge that was dismissed in 2003, 2004. Is it complicated for you, as a woman, as a WNBA player?”

Leslie who was a close friend of Bryant’s denied any wrong doing on Bryant’s part, stating, “It’s not complicated for me at all … I just never see — have ever seen him being the kind of person that would be — do something to violate a woman or be aggressive in that way. That’s just not the person that I know.”

When the clip of the video was released online, supporters of the late Bryant were outraged with King for trying to “tarnish” the former NBA legend’s name.  Snoop Dogg, Boosie BadAzz and Vivica Fox notably spoke out against the reporter.

King responded to the backlash this morning in a Twitter video. She stated she hadn’t even seen the clip until people started commenting on it. She also expressed her anger with CBS for taking the clip out of context.

“I’ve been up reading the comments about the interview I did with Lisa Leslie about Kobe Bryant,” said King. “And I know that if I had only seen the clip that you saw, I’d be extremely angry with me too. I am mortified. I am embarrassed and I am very angry. Unbeknownst to me, my network put up a clip from a very wide-ranging interview — totally taken out of context — and when you see it that way, it’s very jarring. It’s jarring to me. I didn’t even know anything about it.”

King says she too had a friendly relationship with Bryant and no disrespect was intended by the interview.

***BREAKING NEWS*** PRESIDENT TRUMP ACQUITTED IN IMPEACHMENT TRIAL

Not Guilty: Split Senate acquits Trump of impeachment

The U.S. Senate has acquitted President Donald Trump of impeachment, ending only the third presidential trial in American history with votes that split the country and tested civic norms. The proceedings also are feeding the tumultuous 2020 run for the White House. A majority of senators expressed unease with Trump’s pressure campaign on Ukraine that resulted in the two articles of impeachment. But there was nowhere near the two-thirds vote necessary in the Republican-held Senate to remove the president from office. He was found not guilty of both articles of impeachment. Trump is eager to use the tally as vindication, a political anthem in his reelection bid.

This past Sunday, the Super Bowl LIV took place in Miami, FL. Video footage shows Jay-Z, Beyonce and Blue Ivy Carter seated, while Demi Lovato sang the National Anthem.

The Carters quickly became a trending topic across social media. Jay-Z addressed the situation and clarified what happened during an interview at the first Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter Lecture Series at Columbia University.

The HuffPost reveals that, “According to the hip-hop mogul, sitting during the anthem wasn’t supposed to convey a political message.”

Jay-Z said, “It was not premeditated at all” and that he was in artist mode due to his company, Roc Nation, co-producing the halftime show as part of its NFL partnership. He goes on to say, he was praising Lovato with his wife, Beyonce, as Lovato took the stage.
