Mayor Muriel Bowser Endorses Mike Bloomberg for President

Bowser says Bloomberg has a plan to improve the quality of life for all Americans.

Contributed by Jordyn Fields

D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser has announced she is giving her support to presidential candidate and former New York Mayor, Mike Bloomberg.

In a tweet announcing her endorsement, Bowser calls Bloomberg a mentor and friend as well as “the only candidate who will unify the country and defeat Donald Trump…”

Bloomberg who ran as a republican during his campaign for mayor of New York, is currently polling at 8%-10% with voters, which puts him fourth amongst democratic nominees.

During the U.S conference of Mayors Winter Meeting, Bloomberg praised Bowser saying, “She is doing a terrific job, and I hope that someday soon we’ll be calling her ‘Governor Bowser,” A note to his support for D.C statehood.

Bowser’s endorsement of Bloomberg for president isn’t random, the two have interacted before and earlier this year she called him an important voice in the race for president.

According to WAMU, Bowser is set to formally endorse Bloomberg this afternoon at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street NE.

D.C. will hold its primary election on June 2.

PG Corporal Charged With Murder Of Handcuffed Man

WHUR’s News Director Renee Nash is at the Police Headquarters.

Landover, Maryland (Tuesday, January 28th, 2020) – Prince George’s County Police have charged one of their own with murder in the death of a handcuffed man inside a police cruiser.  Chief Hank Stawinski, calling it one of the most difficult days of his career, announced that Corporal Michael Owen is in custody facing second degree murder, manslaughter, and a host of other charges.  Owen is accused of shooting 43-year-old William Green Monday around 7:20pm after he pulled Green over for allegedly striking several vehicles while driving on St. Barnabas Road in Temple Hills.

Chief Stawinski was joined by Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy in making the announcement at police headquarters in Landover.  Stawinki says Green was shot seven times while handcuffed and there was no justifiable reason for the shooting. Corporal Owen has been with the police department for 10 years.  Police records show he was involved in another officer-involved shooting in December 2011.  Owen is in police custody awaiting a bond hearing.

Alsobrooks has ordered Stawinski to direct an independent review of the department’s training practices to make sure an incident like this never happens again.

What To Know For Year Two Of The Trump Tax Plan

Last year’s filing season was an adjustment for taxpayers and industry professionals alike as it was the first under a massive overhaul of federal tax law. While this year’s season is expected to be more sedate, there are a few tweaks to be aware of.

It’s that time again.

The IRS began accepting and processing tax returns for individuals on Monday.

Last year’s filing season was an adjustment for taxpayers and industry professionals alike as it was the first under a massive overhaul of federal tax law. While this year’s season is expected to be more sedate, there are a few tweaks to be aware of.

STANDARD DEDUCTION

The standard deduction doubled under the new tax law that took effect in 2018. In turn, the number of taxpayers who took that instead of itemizing on their taxes jumped sharply. An estimated 90% of taxpayers are expected to take the deduction this year.

While the standard deduction usually increases each year for inflation, it’s worth keeping the figure in mind as taxpayers adjust to the new system. Some people may still want to run through the exercise of deciding whether to itemize or not. The decision comes down to whether your deductible expenses are greater than the standard deduction. Tax preparation software or a tax professional can walk you through this with ease.

Single individuals now get a standard deduction of $12,200 and married individuals filing jointly qualify for a standard deduction of $24,400. Head of household individuals get a standard deduction of $18,350.

HEALTH INSURANCE

New this year: There is no longer a penalty on federal taxes for not having health insurance, something that was put in place by the Affordable Care Act. However, some states may still penalize you for not having health insurance, warns Lisa Greene-Lewis, a CPA and tax expert at TurboTax.

DIVORCE

Anyone who got divorced after 2018 and pays alimony can no longer deduct alimony payments. And ex-spouses who receive alimony are no longer required to claim it as income. Got divorced before 2018? The old rules still apply unless you update your decree to state specifically that the new rules are reflected.

EXTENDERS

Congress recently passed a bill that include a few tax extenders, which renew tax provisions that had expired or were going to expire soon. Here are a handful that you may want to take note of:

— People who are required to pay private mortgage insurance along with their mortgage can once again deduct it. Kathy Pickering, chief tax officer at H&R Block said that this represents a substantial expense for some — in the $2,500 to $4,500 range.

— Another home-related extender: a $500 lifetime credit for making certain energy efficient improvements to your home, such as the purchase of a high efficiency furnace. While many people have already taken advantage of this in years past, Pickering said newer homeowners may want to consider if they can benefit.

— People who suffered a foreclosure and had their debt canceled just got some relief.

The IRS considers that canceled debt as income and therefore subject to taxes. However, there had long been a provision that would waive this if the foreclosure was on a primary residence. Last year, that was not the case.

The waiver has now been reinstated and is extended retroactively, so people who had to pay tax on a canceled debt of this sort can file an amendment. Pickering says this is a provision that impacts few people but “has an extraordinary financial impact.”

— To claim medical expenses on your taxes, the total must exceed a certain percentage of your adjusted gross income. That threshold was set to go up to 10% this year, making it harder for as many people to qualify. But the law extended the prior threshold of 7.5%.

CRYPTOCURRENCY

The IRS has been trying to keep up with the popularity of cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin. Tax experts say it’s a grey area that is slowly being clarified. But for now, cryptocurrency is generally seen as property not currency. So, anyone who trades in it faces the same tax implications as if they were trading stock.

The IRS said it is aware many taxpayers have improperly reported or failed to report transactions in the past. As such, it is increasing its educational efforts and criminal investigations. Additionally, all taxpayers will have to answer a question about their involvement in any virtual currency transactions. If they have received, sold, sent, exchanged or otherwise acquired any virtual currency, they must fill out a new form.

Tax experts say there may still be some confusion but suggest anyone who does trade cryptocurrency should keep close track of all their own activity to make sure they are not stepping on the wrong side of the law.

FREE FILE

The IRS has long offered options for many taxpayers to file online for free, but it may be a bit easier to navigate this year.

Taxpayers can use the IRS Free File system, which is provided by a number of tax preparation companies, if they make less than $69,000 a year.

However, reporting by non-profit news organization ProPublica found that some tax preparation companies had added code to their Free File pages that hid them from search engines and diverted many users to paid products. The IRS has since updated its agreement with the tax prep industry and the companies are barred from hiding their free products.

Additionally, the IRS has tried to help avoid consumer confusion between the IRS Free File system and free or low-cost versions offered by the companies themselves. To make sure you are using the IRS Free File system, go to IRS.gov/freefile to review your choices.

Other options to file for free remain intact. These include those provided by the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program or Tax Counseling for the Elderly, offered by AARP, as well as the IRS Free File Fillable forms, which are electronic versions of its paper forms.

Remembering Kobe Bryant

The life and legacy of Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant leaves a legacy of excellence and purpose.  He was a 5 time NBA champion, league MVP and 18-time all-star.  Bryant is 4th all-time on the NBA scoring list.  He is the only Los Angeles Laker to have both of his numbers, 8 & 24, retired by the team.  He entered the league at age 18 and played 20 seasons in the NBA.  Bryant’s legacy does not end there–he was also an Academy Award winner, entrepreneur and youth basketball coach (leading his daughter’s team).  We discuss that and more as we focus on the life and legacy of Kobe Bryant.

Pilot Of Bryant Helicopter Tried To Avoid Heavy Fog

Randy Waldman, a helicopter flight instructor who lives in Los Angeles, said the radar tracking data he’s seen leads him to believe the pilot got confused in the fog and went into a fatal dive.

CALABASAS, Calif. (AP) — A veteran pilot who plunged into a Los Angeles-area hillside, killing Kobe Bryant and eight others, had tried to avoid fog so heavy that it had grounded police choppers, authorities said.

But even experienced pilots may have only seconds to act when they are blinded by weather, an expert said as investigators began scouring the wreckage for clues to Sunday morning’s crash.

The NBA postponed the Los Angeles Lakers’ next game against the Clippers on Tuesday night after the deaths of the retired superstar and the other victims.

Bryant’s death at age 41 was mourned around the world in an outpouring of shocked grief. And while the official investigation into the cause of the crash was just beginning and crews were still working to recover the bodies, experts and armchair pilots alike already were flooding social media and the airwaves with speculation.

One popular theme was the weather. Dense fog had settled along part of the flight path.

The chartered Sikorsky S-76B was a luxury twin-engine aircraft often used by Bryant in traffic-jumping hops around the LA area’s notoriously congested sprawl. It was heading from John Wayne Airport in Orange County to Camarillo Airport in Ventura County when it crashed in Calabasas.

Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and the other passengers were heading to Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy, a youth sports center in Thousand Oaks. Bryant was to coach a basketball tournament there in which his daughter was supposed to play.

Also killed were John Altobelli, 56, longtime head coach of Southern California’s Orange Coast College baseball team; his wife, Keri; and daughter, Alyssa, who played on the same basketball team as Bryant’s daughter; and Christina Mauser, a girls’ basketball coach at a Southern California elementary school.

The pilot, Ara Zobayan, was chief pilot for the craft’s owner, Island Express Helicopters. He also was a flight instructor, had more than 8,000 hours of flight time and had flown Bryant and other celebrities several times before, including Kylie Jenner.

“He was such a nice man,” Jenner wrote on Instagram.

Randy Waldman, a helicopter flight instructor who lives in Los Angeles, said the radar tracking data he’s seen leads him to believe the pilot got confused in the fog and went into a fatal dive.

The aircraft’s speed “means he was completely out of control and in a dive,” Waldman said.

“Once you get disoriented your body senses completely tell you the wrong thing. You have no idea which way is up or down,” he said.

“If you’re flying visually, if you get caught in a situation where you can’t see out the windshield, the life expectancy of the pilot and the aircraft is maybe 10, 15 seconds,” Waldman said.

Some experts raised questions of whether the helicopter should have even been flying. The weather was so foggy that the Los Angeles Police Department and the county sheriff’s department had grounded their own choppers.

“He could have turned around and gone back to a safer place with better visibility,” Waldman said.

However, “a lot of times somebody who’s doing it for a living is pressured to get their client to where they have to go,” Waldman said. “They take chances that maybe they shouldn’t take.”

The helicopter was flying around Burbank, just north of Los Angeles, when the pilot received air traffic control permission to use special visual flight rules, allowing the helicopter to fly in less-than-optimal visibility and weather conditions.

Zobayan was told to follow a freeway and stay at or below 2,500 feet (762 meters), according to radio traffic. The pilot didn’t seem overly concerned although at one point, he asks air traffic controllers to provide “flight following” guidance but is told the helicopter is too low for that radar assistance.

About four minutes later, “the pilot advised they were climbing to avoid a cloud layer,” Jennifer Homendy of the National Transportation Safety Board said Monday.

It was his last message to air traffic controllers.

“When ATC asked what the pilot planned to do, there was no reply,” Homendy said. “Radar data indicates the helicopter climbed to 2,300 feet (701 meters) and then began a left descending turn.”

Two minutes later, someone on the ground called 911 to report the crash. The helicopter had slammed into a hillside and burst into flames.

Details of what followed are still under investigation but there are indications that the helicopter plunged some 1,000 feet (305 meters). It was flying at about 184 mph (296 kph) and descending at a rate of more than 4,000 feet per minute when it struck the ground, according to data from Flightradar24.

The helicopter’s rapid climb and fast descent suggest the pilot was disoriented, said Jerry Kidrick, a retired Army colonel who flew helicopters in Iraq and now teaches at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona.

Disoriented pilots must instantly switch from visual cues to flying the aircraft using only the machine’s instruments, he said.

“It’s one of the most dangerous conditions you can be in,” Kidrick said. “Oftentimes, your body is telling you something different than what the instruments are telling you.”

On Monday, NTSB investigators scoured the area to collect evidence and Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies on horseback patrolled the brushy Calabasas hillside. Homendy said the NTSB expected to be on the scene for five days.

“It was a pretty devastating accident scene,” she said of the widespread wreckage. “A piece of the tail is down the hill. The fuselage is on the other side of that hill. And then the main rotor is about 100 yards (91 meters) beyond that.”

Homendy urged people with photographs of weather in the area at the time of the crash to send them to the NTSB. However, she said investigating teams would look at everything, from the pilot’s history and actions to the state of the helicopter and its engines.

“We look at man, machine and the environment,” she said. “And weather is just a small portion of that.”

DC Police To No Longer Handcuff Pre-Teens

Youth 12 and under will no longer be handcuffed when being detained by DC police.

DC police officers will no longer handcuff children under 12 years of age, except in situations deemed dangerous to the child or the public.  District police faced heavy criticism after video showed them last April chasing and handcuffing a 9-year-old boy who was later determined to have committed no crime. Weeks earlier police cuffed a 10-year-old boy who DC attorney general Karl Racine called “totally innocent.”   The police department worked with DC’s Office of the Attorney General on the new policy, which was announced today.

The seven other victims in the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and his daughter were associated with Bryant’s daughter’s basketball team.

(Calabasas, CA) — More information is coming out on the other victims in the California helicopter crash that killed NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter. The 41-year-old was on his way to coach Gianna’s basketball game. Her close friend and teammate Alyssa Altobelli was also playing and on board with her parents. Her dad, John Altobelli, was a college baseball coach in Orange County and hitched the ride to avoid an 80-mile drive. Another 13-year-old friend was headed to the game with her mom. Reaction To The Death Of Retired NBA Superstar Kobe Bryant

“It’s an unbelievable reality that he’s no longer here.” — golfer Tiger Woods

Reaction from the basketball world and beyond on the death of retired NBA superstar Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, in a helicopter crash on Sunday:

“Words can’t describe the pain I am feeling. I loved Kobe — he was like a little brother to me. We used to talk often, and I will miss those conversations very much. He was a fierce competitor, one of the greats of the game and a creative force. Kobe was also an amazing dad who loved his family deeply — and took great pride in his daughter’s love for the game of basketball.” — Basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan in a statement

“The crash was a tragedy for multiple families. My heart goes out to Vanessa and the families that lost loved ones. Kobe was a chosen one — special in many ways to many people. Our relationship as coach/player transcended the norm. He went beyond the veil.” — former Lakers coach Phil Jackson in a statement

“It’s an unbelievable reality that he’s no longer here.” — golfer Tiger Woods

“Kobe was not only an icon in the sports arena, he was a man of the world and touched so many lives and communities in the most positive ways. His star was continuing to rise every day and he knew no limits because of his many intellectual and creative talents and desire to give back to others – his passion for the game, for his family and for others was apparent in everything he accomplished.” — Basketball Hall of Famer Larry Bird in a statement

“It’s just a huge loss to the game. He was a great example on a lot of different stages.” — rapper Rick Ross at the Grammy Awards

“Jeannine & I are absolutely shocked to hear of the loss of one of my favorite people & one of the best basketball minds in the history of the game! Our hearts and prayers to Vanessa & his girls. @kobebryant you were my biggest fan, but I was yours. #RIPMAMBA” — Basketball Hall of Famer Bill Russell via Twitter

“That is terrible news!” — President Donald Trump via Twitter

“Kobe was a legend on the court and just getting started in what would have been just as meaningful a second act. To lose Gianna is even more heartbreaking to us as parents. Michelle and I send love and prayers to Vanessa and the entire Bryant family on an unthinkable day.” — Former President Barack Obama via Twitter

“For 20 seasons, Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with an absolute devotion to winning. He was one of the most extraordinary players in the history of our game with accomplishments that are legendary: five NBA championships, an NBA MVP award, 18 NBA All-Star selections, and two Olympic gold medals. But he will be remembered most for inspiring people around the world to pick up a basketball and compete to the very best of their ability. He was generous with the wisdom he acquired and saw it as his mission to share it with future generations of players, taking special delight in passing down his love of the game to Gianna.” — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in a statement

“Kobe Bryant was far and away the greatest athlete I had the privilege of representing during my 35 years as a player agent. And I represented many great athletes. I’ve known Kobe since he was a 17-year-old senior at Lower Merion High on Philadelphia’s Main Line. He had a fearsome intellectual curiosity and his enthusiasm was contagious. The glint in his eyes wasn’t just joy: It was sparks from a fire that couldn’t be tamped down. To him, anything less than the best was failure. He deeply loved his wife Vanessa and the family they created, Natalia, Gianna, Bianka and Capri. He cherished his daughters and they were always his top priority. Losing Gianna makes this even more tragic. Kobe’s death is especially wrenching knowing what he was capable of, and what he might have accomplished in his post NBA life. He was already well on his way, continuing to have such an impactful life.”— Arn Tellem, Bryant’s former agent and now the Detroit Pistons’ vice chairman.

“Just devastated to hear about #KobeBryant. An extraordinary athlete, and a genuinely kind, wonderful man. Sending love, prayers & compassion to his family. To his entire @NBA family as well.” — actress Reese Witherspoon via Twitter

“As I tweet through my tears, I am so hurt. I cannot stop crying. Kobe was instrumental to so many people. There is a hole in the basketball world and there will be for a long time. Rest in heavenly peace.” — the Rev. Jesse Jackson via Twitter

“Today we at @WaltDisneyCo mourn the tragic loss of @kobebryant…a giant in sports and a person so full of life. Terrible news and so hard to process….” — Robert Iger, chairman and CEO of Disney, via Twitter

“A true gladiator in our life time. You will be forever in our memories, our childrens memories, and generations to come.” — rapper Wyclef Jean via Twitter

“I’m at a loss for words. @kobebryant was a long-time friend, an inspiration and we shared our first ever commercial @espn together as professionals. I love you forever. #RIPMAMBA” — retired NFL player Keyshawn Johnson

“Shocked by the death of @kobebryant, an exemplary athlete both on and off the basketball court. Our most heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace.” — FC Barcelona football club via Twitter

“Kobe Bryant Rest in Peace. Unbelievable, unbelievably sad…” — Basketball Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas via Twitter

“Kobe’s support for the WNBA and women’s basketball along with his passion for helping young girls and boys follow their dreams made him a true legend for our sport. We admired him not just as a legendary basketball player, but as a father, a youth coach, and a role model for future generations of athletes.” — WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert in a statement

“Kobe Bryant was a giant who inspired, amazed and thrilled people everywhere with his incomparable skill on the court — and awed us with his intellect and humility as a father, husband, creative genius, and ambassador for the game he loved.” — Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles mayor, via Twitter

Kobe Bryant, Daughter Killed In Copter Crash, 7 Others Dead

“Words can’t describe the pain I am feeling. I loved Kobe — he was like a little brother to me,” retired NBA great Michael Jordan said. “We used to talk often, and I will miss those conversations very much. He was a fierce competitor, one of the greats of the game and a creative force.”

CALABASAS, Calif. (AP) — NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others were killed Sunday when their helicopter plunged into a steep hillside in dense morning fog in Southern California, his sudden death at age 41 touching off an outpouring of grief for a star whose celebrity transcended basketball.

The chopper went down in Calabasas, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Authorities said nine people were aboard and presumed dead. Bryant, an all-time basketball great who spent his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers, was among the victims, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, also was killed, a different person familiar with the case said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva would not confirm the identities of the victims Sunday pending official word from the coroner.

“God bless their souls,” Villanueva said at a news conference.

The cause of the crash was unknown.

News of the charismatic superstar’s death rocketed around the sports and entertainment worlds, with many taking to Twitter to register their shock, disbelief and anguish.

“Words can’t describe the pain I am feeling. I loved Kobe — he was like a little brother to me,” retired NBA great Michael Jordan said. “We used to talk often, and I will miss those conversations very much. He was a fierce competitor, one of the greats of the game and a creative force.”

NBA players were in tears during pregame warm-ups as crowds chanted “Kobe! Kobe!” Tiger Woods was unaware of the news during his final round at Torrey Pines in San Diego when he started hearing the gallery yell “Do it for Mamba,” referring to Bryant by his nickname.

The medical examiner’s office said specialists were working at the scene to recover the bodies, and investigators were trying to confirm identities. Federal transportation safety investigators were en route.

Bryant’s helicopter left Santa Ana shortly after 9 a.m. and circled for a time just east of Interstate 5, near Glendale. Air traffic controllers noted poor visibility around Burbank, just to the north, and Van Nuys, to the northwest.

After holding up the helicopter for other aircraft, they cleared the Sikorsky S-76 to proceed north along Interstate 5 through Burbank before turning west to follow U.S Route 101, the Ventura Highway.

Shortly after 9:40 a.m., the helicopter turned again, toward the southeast, and climbed to more than 2,000 feet above sea level. It then descended and crashed into the hillside at about 1,400 feet, according to data from Flightradar24.

When it struck the ground, the helicopter was flying at about 160 knots (184 mph) and descending at a rate of more than 4,000 feet per minute, the Flightradar24 data showed.

At the time of the crash, the Los Angles County Sheriff’s Department had grounded its own helicopters because of the poor weather conditions. The impact scattered debris over an area about the size of a football field, Villanueva said.

Among other things, investigators will look at the pilot’s history, the chopper’s maintenance history, and the records of its owner and operator, NTSB board member Jennifer Homendy said at a news conference.

Justin Green, an aviation attorney in New York who flew helicopters in the Marine Corps, said weather may have contributed to the crash. Pilots can become disoriented in low visibility, losing track of which direction is up. Green said a pilot flying an S-76 would be instrument-rated, meaning they could fly the helicopter without relying on visual cues from outside.

All around the world, people were glued to their phones and TV screens as news of the crash spread and networks broke into programming with live coverage. A visibly shaken LeBron James wiped his eyes with tissues and walked away alone from the Lakers plane that had just landed in Southern California.

Thousands of people gathered to mourn Bryant outside the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. Mourners in No. 24 jerseys mixed with those in fancy dress arriving at the downtown arena for Sunday evening’s Grammy Awards.

People carried flowers and chanted “Kobe!” and “MVP!” under giant video screens showing Bryant’s smiling face.

“This is where we needed to be,” said Naveen Cheerath, 31.

Bryant retired in 2016 as the third-leading scorer in NBA history, finishing two decades with the Lakers as a prolific shot-maker with a sublime all-around game and a relentless competitive ethic. He held that spot in the league scoring ranks until Saturday night, when the Lakers’ James passed him for third place during a game in Philadelphia, Bryant’s hometown.

“Continuing to move the game forward (at)KingJames,” Bryant wrote in his last tweet. “Much respect my brother.”

Bryant had one of the greatest careers in recent NBA history and became one of the game’s most popular players as the face of the 16-time NBA champion Lakers franchise. He was the league MVP in 2008 and a two-time NBA scoring champion, and he earned 12 selections to the NBA’s All-Defensive teams.

He teamed with O’Neal in a combustible partnership to lead the Lakers to consecutive NBA titles in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

His Lakers tenure was marred by scandal, when in 2003, Bryant was accused of raping a 19-year-old employee at a Colorado resort. He said the two had consensual sex, and prosecutors later dropped the felony sexual assault charge at the request of the accuser. The woman later filed a civil suit against Bryant that was settled out of court.

Bryant went on to win two more titles in 2009 and 2010, and retired in 2016 after scoring 60 points in his final NBA game.

After leaving the game, Bryant had more time to play coach to daughter Gianna, who had a budding basketball career of her own and, her father said, wanted to one day play in the WNBA. They were seen sitting courtside at a Brooklyn Nets game late last year, Bryant clearly passing along his wisdom to his daughter. He regularly showcased her talents on the court on social media.

Bryant’s death was felt particularly painfully in Los Angeles, where he was unquestionably the most popular athlete and one of the city’s most beloved public figures. Hundreds of fans — many in Bryant jerseys and Lakers gear — spontaneously gathered at Staples Center and in the surrounding LA Live entertainment complex, weeping and staring at video boards with Bryant’s image.

Among those killed were John Altobelli, head coach of Southern California’s Orange Coast College baseball team, his wife, Keri, and daughter, Alyssa, who played on the same team as Bryant’s daughter, said his brother, Tony, who is the sports information director at the school.

The National Transportation Safety Board typically issues a preliminary report within about 10 days that will give a rough summary of what investigators have learned. A ruling on the cause can take a year or more.

Colin Storm was in his living room in Calabasas when he heard what sounded to him like a low-flying airplane or helicopter.

“Ït was very foggy so we couldn’t see anything,” he said. “But then we heard some sputtering and then a boom.”

The fog cleared a bit, and Storm could see smoke rising from the hillside in front of his home.

Firefighters hiked in with medical equipment and hoses, and medical personnel rappelled to the site from a helicopter, but found no survivors, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said.

BACKGROUND FROM THE ECONOMIC POLICY INSTITUTE

Background on the gender pay gap:

  • On average: women are paid 7 percent of men’s wages (83 cents on the male dollar)
  • Gender pay gap exists in every wage percentile
    • In the 10th percentile: women make 92 cents on the male dollar
    • In the 95th percentile: women make 74 cents on the male dollar
  • Motherhood penalty
    • After giving birth, women are perceived to be less dedicated to their jobs, while men are perceived to be more dedicated to their jobs
  • Unions
    • Unionized work: women make 89 cents on the male dollar
    • Nonunionized work: women make 82 cents on the male dollar
  • Employer-provided benefits
    • Women are less likely to have employer-provided healthcare and fewer retirement resources than men

Background on the racial pay gap:

  • Black unemployment rate (8%) is almost twice as high as the white unemployment rate (4.3%)
  • Racial pay gap exists across education, experience, and industries
  • Widening vs. overall wage gap
    • College educated entrants – worst for widening pay gap
    • Black men with more work experience – overall pay gap
  • New-entrant (0 to 10 years of experience) wage gap: 7% disadvantage (2015)
    • Since 1979: 5 percentage point increase
  • Black-white wage gap among less educated workers
    • Less of a regional issue, but a greater national issue
  • Underlying inequalities
    • Lower rates of unionization among Black workers
      • Accounts for one-fourth to one-fifth of the 6 percent (among new-entrants) and 3.0 percent (among experienced men) growth of the widening wage gap
    • Educational inequalities
    • Mass incarceration and the prison-industrial complex

Background on the combined gender and race pay gap:

  • Women of color face a double pay penalty: the gender and racial pay penalty
  • Black women: make 2% less than white men (2015)
  • Latinas: paid 53 cents on the white non-Hispanic male dollar
    • Exists across education level and industries
      • A Latina with a graduate-level degree makes less than a college-educated white non-Hispanic male
    • Asian women: paid the least relative to their male counterpart
      • Asian and white men tend to make higher wages than Black and Latino men

Wage negotiation differentials (race and gender)

  • Racial bias (Volpone, S. Kaiser, C.):
    1. Based on the participant’s perception: Black Americans are less likely to negotiate wages than white Americans
    2. Based on the participant’s perception: participants expected less aggressive wage negotiations from Black job seekers
    3. Based on participant evaluator and job seeker interactions:
      • Black job seekers reported comparable negotiation (number of offers and counteroffers made) to their white counterparts
      • Evaluators reported Black job seekers negotiated more than white job seekers
      • Conclusion (for test 3): Evaluators perception that Black job seekers will negotiate less led to an overexaggerated perception of wage negotiations
        • This led to lower starting salaries for Black job seekers (within this survey)
      • Gender bias (Fractl research)
        • 8% of survey respondents have asked for a raise
          • Asian men and women are least likely to ask for a raise, followed by Black women
        • 1% of survey respondents are more likely to discuss a raise with someone of the same race or ethnicity
          • Latinx and Black workers are more likely to be more comfortable
        • More than one-third of female survey respondents:
          • Reported feeling like their race or gender played a role in pay raise denial

Perception of job qualifications when applying for jobs

  • According to Hewlett-Packard internal report:
    • Men will apply for a job if they only meet 60% of the job qualifications, while women will apply for a job only if they meet 100% of job qualifications
      • Harvard Business Review survey showed:
        • 41% of women stated: “I didn’t think they would hire me since I didn’t meet the qualifications, and I didn’t want to waste my time”
          • Respondents believed they needed the qualifications to get the job in the first place, not how well they could do the job
            • Gap in perception of the hiring process on the part of the job seeker

WASHINGTON, DC) – On Wednesday, January 22, at 9:00 p.m., Mayor Muriel Bowser, along with volunteers, will engage residents experiencing homelessness to help connect them with available District resources and services, and will execute the annual census of persons and families experiencing homelessness as part of her administration’s annual Point in Time (PIT) count.

The annual PIT count provides key information on the size, scope and service needs of persons experiencing homelessness in the District. This information, in turn, helps the District Government to better target resources and work to make homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring in the District.

The 2019 PIT count indicated a 5.5% reduction in the overall number of persons experiencing homelessness in 2018, and a 45 percent decrease in family homelessness since Mayor Bowser began implementing her Homeward DC plan in 2016. Chronic homelessness in the District has declined by 13.5% and is at its lowest rate in 15 years.

Waithe is best known for her roles as a screenwriter, producer and LGBTQ activist. As well as her starring role in Netflix’s Master of None.

The pair announced their engagement in 2017 after dating for 3 years. Waithe revealed the marriage to guest host John Legend on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in November.

“We went to San Francisco. We went to the courthouse. Got married right in front of Harvey Milk’s bust. It was her idea, as all good things are,” Waithe explained. ” And she was just driving and she saw the courthouse and she said, ‘We should get married there.’ And I said, ‘Cool, I’m down.'”

There is no word on the cause of the split.

Thousands expected on the National Mall today for the March for Life Rally.
President Trump will attend the anti-abortion march. It will be the first time a president has attended in the event in its 47 year history. In 2018, Mr. Trump became the first president to address the March for Life through a video message.  Meantime, the Trump Administration is planning to take action today against California for requiring private health insurance to cover abortion.  At least six other states including New York, Washington, and Oregon have similar requirements.  The Wall Street Journal reports the President plans to announce the action that might include stripping California of federal funds.

DC Streetcar Extension Delayed

Streetcars in Georgetown will not be a reality, for now. The DC Council says the money is not there to extend the rail.

(Washington, DC) — The DC Council is saying the DC Streetcar is no longer coming to Georgetown. The plans were dismissed after the Department of Transportation claims there is no feasible path to complete the project in the short-term due to challenges with funding and maintenance. DDOT still wants to extend the service to Anacostia and along Benning Road to the Benning Road Metro Station. The project is going to cost 241-million dollars and includes improvements to roadway and bridges, in addition to new streetcar vehicles. The DC Streetcar is currently free and will remain as such until the completion of the Benning Road expansion in 2026.

John Legend On Grammys, New ‘Dark’ Single And ‘This Is Us’

“It was a pleasant surprise,” Legend said. “I never bank on things like that happening. With Christmas albums, sometimes they’re treated more like novelty albums or not kind of considered in the main body of people’s career and their work, but I put a lot of love into that Christmas album and worked with some of the best musicians in the world.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Some artists record Christmas albums to fulfill a recording contract. But not John Legend. And now he has a Grammy nomination to prove it.

The 10-time Grammy winner said when he was recording 2018’s “A Legendary Christmas,” he didn’t treat it like a part-time project, which might be the reason it earned a Grammy nod for best traditional pop vocal album, competing with records from Barbra Streisand, Elvis Costello, Michael Bublé and Andrea Bocelli.

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Raphael Saadiq produced the album, which features guest appearances from Grammy favorites Stevie Wonder and Esperanza Spalding.

“We just had so much fun making it and I’m very happy it got the recognition it got,” he said.

Legend is set to perform at Sunday’s Grammys alongside DJ Khaled, Meek Mill and others in a special tribute to late rapper Nipsey Hussle. Legend’s collaboration with Hussle and Khaled, the song “Higher,” is nominated for best rap/sung performance.

Legend knows how impactful a Grammy performance could have on a song: When he sang “All of Me” at the 2014 show, it helped the song reach new heights. It eventually topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became one of the year’s biggest hits.

“(‘All of Me’) had been slowly working its way up the urban AC charts and hadn’t crossed over to any other chart really, and when we performed at the Grammys, it just took over,” he said.

The piano-playing superstar is experiencing similar success with his new single, “Conversations in the Dark,” which quickly topped the iTunes chart last week.

“This is the first song I’ve ever put out that went to No. 1 on iTunes on the first week of release, so it’s kind of cool for me at this stage in my career have a song do that,” he said. “It’s cool to see a song getting embraced so quickly… The song, I think, voices the way people feel about the people they love, and that’s kind of what I do best — write songs that help give a voice to those kinds of feelings.”

“Conversations in the Dark” also got a boost since Legend performed the track on last week’s episode of NBC’s “This Is Us.”

“It was great for the song. Obviously, people watch ‘This Is Us’ to get their heart strings pulled a little bit and so I think the song was perfect for that moment. When they reached out to me, I didn’t even know what song I was going to do, but when we finished ‘Conversations in the Dark’ I was like, ‘Oh, that’s got to be the one,’” said Legend, who is a coach on NBC’s “The Voice.”

“It’s funny because the label is little behind. We were just putting it out to have it ready for ‘This Is Us,’ but now we’ve seen how incredible the response has been, so now we’re like, ‘Oh, let’s go to radio and let’s do all the things you normally do to promote a single,’” he said. “Up until we released it, I don’t think the label knew how big of an impact it would have.”

Jamie Foxx, Jordan Peele Among Honorees At AAFCA Awards

“People say so much about the other awards, but it’s special when it comes from your own people,” said Foxx, who won best supporting actor for his role in “Just Mercy.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jamie Foxx has won a plethora of major awards including an Oscar and Grammy. But after the African American Film Critics Association recognized him Wednesday night, the actor-singer called its honor just as special.

Foxx along with Eddie Murphy and Jordan Peele were among some of the honorees at the 11th annual ceremony in Los Angeles.

“People say so much about the other awards, but it’s special when it comes from your own people,” said Foxx, who won best supporting actor for his role in “Just Mercy.”

“It’s just special,” he said after receiving the award from the organization, which actively reviews films with an emphasis on projects that include the black experience. The awards mainly highlight films produced, written, directed and starring people from the African diaspora along with other ethnic projects that break new ground.

Oscar contender “Parasite,” a South Korean thriller, won two awards for best screenplay and foreign film, sharing the honor with “Atlantics,” a Senegalese love story.

Through his translator, “Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho said African Americans played a big role for him while studying cinema during college in South Korea. He said he used to create his own subtitles to Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” and “Jungle Fever.”

“At the time, my English wasn’t that good, so subtitling it was quite an experience,” Bong said. “I had no idea there was various curse words in the English language. Thanks to Spike Lee, I learned so many things.”

Bong said he finally met Lee at an award show a couple weeks ago. The director took a picture with Lee, but didn’t get a chance to tell him about how he subtitled his films in college.

“If any of you guys are acquainted with him, please tell him I would like to get in touch with him,” his translator said as the audience burst into laughter.

After Bong left the stage, Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter — who has worked with Lee for more than 20 years — said she could put the two directors in touch with each other.

Murphy was not in attendance, but he won for best actor for his role in Netflix’s “Dolemite Is My Name.”

For a second time, a film directed by Peele won the AAFCA award for best picture. His movie “Us,” starring Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, won the show’s top honor.

“For my second project, the whole question was ‘What are you going to do?’ I knew that I wanted to bring something different, something that people weren’t expecting,” said Peele, who also won for best director. In 2018, his film “Get Out” took home the award for best picture.

“I wanted to take a risk,” he continued. “It means so much to me to be acknowledged for this huge risk, this huge swing. … This encourages myself and a whole lot of other people to take big swings.”

Music exec Clarence Avant was honored with the game changer award. The Netflix documentary “The Black Godfather,” which depicts Avant’s story, was named best documentary.

Matthew Cherry, who earned his first Oscar nomination for “Hair Love,” took home the award for breakthrough director.

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” director Peter Ramsey said Cherry “struck a nerve” with his animated short film, which delved into a story about an African-American father who learns how to style his daughter’s hair for the first time.

“It’s important to honor each other, especially when groundbreaking film making is happening,” Cherry said. “It’s been happening since the beginning of cinema, so it’s really important that we honor each other.”

Virginia A Step Away From Stricter Gun Laws

The Virginia state senate passed tougher gun laws to keep fire arms out of the hands of people deemed dangerous. The bill must now be approved by the House.

Virginia’s Democratic legislators are looking to tighten gun laws. The state Senate passed legislation Wednesday that would allow authorities to take guns away from people deemed dangerous to themselves or others.  Republican Senators fiercely opposed the legislation. GOP Senator Amanda Chase called supporters of the legislation “traitors” and said the proposed law would embolden criminals and hurt law-abiding citizens. The bill now moves to the House.
