DC Health is encouraging residents of all ages to be up to date on their COVID-19 and flu vaccinations and boosters in order to protect their friends and family this holiday season.
Washington, D.C. (Wednesday, December 14, 2022) – Trying to get ahead of a possible holiday surge, DC Health COVID Centers are now making the COVID-19 bivalent booster vaccine available for infants 6 months and older.
Health officials say the bivalent booster vaccine provides protection against the original COVID-19 virus and the new, more contagious Omicron variants. Both the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 bivalent boosters are available to infants 6 months and older.
The Pfizer bivalent vaccine is recommended for individuals 6 months to 4 years of age as the third dose to complete the primary series, at least two months since their last shot. A booster dose is not authorized for children in this age group who already completed the Pfizer 3-dose primary series. The Pfizer bivalent booster is also available to individuals 5 years of age or older, regardless of which vaccine was taken for their primary series or booster as long as it has been at least two months since they have completed their primary vaccination series or since they have received the most recent COVID-19 booster dose.
The Moderna bivalent vaccine is recommended for individuals 6 months to 5 years if they received the Moderna vaccine as their primary series and it has been at least two months since their last dose. The Moderna bivalent booster is also available to individuals 6 years of age or older, regardless of which vaccine was taken for their primary series or booster as long as it has been at least two months since they have completed their primary vaccination series or since they have received the most recent COVID-19 booster dose.
DC Health continues to emphasize that the most important thing residents can do to protect themselves and their families from COVID-19 and the flu this holiday season is to be up to date with their vaccinations. Many Confederate statues in Virginia were erected decades after the Civil War, during the Jim Crow era.

It took just minutes to free the statue of Confederate Gen. A.P. Hill from its base, before a crane using yellow straps looped under the statue’s arms lifted it onto a bed of tires on a flatbed truck. After the statue was removed, the crew got to work removing the base. Several dozen people, including neighbors, some of Hill’s indirect descendants and supporters and opponents of the removal, stood in the closed intersection watching the crew work.
Richmond removed its other Confederate monuments amid the racial justice protests that followed George Floyd’s killing in 2020. But efforts to remove the Hill statue, which sat in the middle of a busy intersection near a school, were more complicated because the general’s remains were interred beneath it about 25 years after his death at the end of the Civil War.
Many Confederate statues in Virginia were erected decades after the Civil War, during the Jim Crow era, when states imposed new segregation laws, and during the “Lost Cause” movement, when historians and others tried to depict the South’s rebellion as a fight to defend states’ rights, not slavery. Some Confederate tributes remain in Richmond, but they’re on state land, including on Capitol Square surrounding the Virginia State Capitol building.
Former Loudoun County Public Schools spokesman Wayde Byard was also indicted.
The former superintendent of the Loudoun County Public School system has been indicted on three misdemeanor charges by a special grand jury that investigated the response to two sexual assaults committed by a student last year.

The grand jury has also issued a felony perjury indictment against the school system’s primary spokesman.
The indictments against former Superintendent Scott Ziegler and spokesman Wayde Byard follow release of a report last week that faulted the school system in general, and Ziegler in particular, for a lack of transparency about the assaults. It also concluded that the second assault could have been prevented if officials had heeded warning signs in the student’s behavior.
The grand jury was commissioned by Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares after he and Gov. Glenn Youngkin took office at the start of the year. Both criticized the school system during their election campaigns.
The school system sought unsuccessfully to quash the grand jury investigation, calling it politically motivated.
School officials did not immediately respond to a Monday phone call and email seeking comment. Ziegler and Byard are scheduled to make initial appearances in Loudoun County Circuit Court on Tuesday.
Dorothy Pitman Hughes, a pioneering Black feminist, and activist died at the age of 84.
She was born Dorothy Jean Ridley on Oct. 2, 1938, in Lumpkin, Georgia. She would become an advocate for child welfare and community matters.
Hughes was involved in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, working alongside figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
According to NPR, the daughter Delethia Ridley Malmsten stated her mother passed away Dec. 1 in Tampa, Florida, at the home of her and her husband. Her cause of death was old age.
In the 1970s, Hughes established New York City’s first shelter for battered women, as well as a child services agency and a community center.
She was close friends with feminist leader Gloria Steinem. Their photo is one of the most iconic images, as the two standing together with the fist raised, honoring the Black Panther salute.
The two would go on cross-country speaking tours together. She published a memoir in 2000 and was portrayed by Janelle Monaé in the 2020 movie The Glorias.

More than 3,500 toys and gifts were collected at 20th Annual WHUR Toy Drive Saturday to help make the wish list of needy youth across the DMV come true. Special thanks to our loyal listeners and sponsors.

Dozens of listeners heeded the call of WHUR personality Coka Lani and dropped off toys, gifts, and monetary donations to spread joy for the holiday season. “My husband Anthony and I have been doing this now for almost 10 years. I actually started giving to the WHUR Toy Drive because I was once that single mom who had to decide whether I was going to give my kids a Christmas gift or pay a bill,” said Stephanie Lee. Those sentiments were echoed throughout the day as more than 3,500 items were donated along with $2,700.
The success of the toy drive was truly cemented by the involvement of numerous organizations that pulled together their members to bring in donations collectively, including several chapters of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Top Flight Corvette Club, Phase 2, Unity Thunder Car Club, and Forestville Rehabilitation Center, just to name a few.

All donations are distributed to the following organizations who service families and children in need around the DMV: Building Bridges Across the River, Family Justice Center of Prince George’s County, Northern Virginia Urban League, YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, Washington Wish List Committee, and Women’s Wing of Washington, DC.

The WHUR Toy Drive was sponsored by FedEx and Banister Ford of Marlow Heights.
Prosecutors made a procedural error when issuing indictments for the nine former state officials last year.

J. Alexander Kueng pleaded guilty in October to a state count of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.
The former Minneapolis police officer who kneeled on George Floyd’s back while another officer kneeled on the Black man’s neck was sentenced Friday to 3 1/2 years in prison.

J. Alexander Kueng pleaded guilty in October to a state count of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. In exchange, a charge of aiding and abetting murder was dropped. Kueng is already serving a federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights, and the state and federal sentence will be served at the same time.
Kueng appeared at the hearing via video from a federal prison in Ohio. When given the chance to address the court, he declined.
Floyd’s family members had the right to make victim impact statements, but none did. Attorney Ben Crump, who has represented the family, said in a statement before the hearing that Kueng’s sentencing “delivers yet another piece of justice for the Floyd family. ”
Griner was released as part of a prisoner swap with Viktor Bout… a notorious Russian arms dealer.

The shooting comes a day after an off-duty FBI agent shot and killed someone during a fight at the Metro Center station.

The report says owner Dan Snyder allowed pervasive sexual harassment by team executives of female employees.

Brittney Griner released by Russia in 1-for-1 prisoner swap for arms dealer Viktor Bout, U.S. official says.
In February, the WNBA star was arrested for having a vape containing cannabis oil, making her the most high-profile American jailed abroad. This is the second deal in eight months with Russia.
In court, Griner admitted to the possession of the canisters but said she had no criminal intent and said their presence in her luggage was due to hasty packing.
The prisoner Bout was described as “the world’s most prolific arms dealer.” He was currently serving a 25-year sentence for what U.S officials said conspiring to sell tens of millions of dollars in weapons that were to be used against Americans.
The swap has been in the works for some time, Biden expressed that Russia and the U.S. would move forward with a deal once the midterm elections were concluded.
President Biden spoke with Griner on the phone Thursday while her wife, Cherelle, was in the Oval Office.

How do divorced or separated parents share the children and make the best of the holidays?

Governor Larry Hogan issued an emergency directive due to what he calls an unacceptable security risk.

The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation and producer Metro Boomin are coming together to give twenty-six single mothers and their kids to the ultimate football experience.
The partnership is following the announcement of the producers’ Single Moms Are Superheroes campaign. The Families were given VIP treatment at the Atlanta Falcons game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, entering through the player tunnel and hanging out on the sidelines as part of the ATL Falcons Anthem Program.
His love for his mother clearly is the obvious motivation for his Single Moms Are Superheroes initiative. Boomin’ who tragically lost his mother Leslie Wayne earlier this year. She was a victim of an alleged murder-suicide at the hands of her husband.
The platinum producer came together with The Steve & Majorie Harvey Foundation, to extend their resources and support to these families. The executive director of Harvey’s foundation said, “Our mission is to ensure the needs of the whole family are met, and we know that the most important part of that nucleus is the mom.
Nia Long and Ime Udoka are calling it quits. The 51-year-old actress and 45-year-old NBA coach have ended their 13-year romance.
The news comes after Udoka allegedly had an affair with a female co-worker within the Boston Celtics organization. In September Udoka was suspended as head coach of the team, before the season after the alleged relationship was exposed.
Long’s rep says the two are “no longer together but remain fully committed to co-parenting their son.” The couple shares a ten-year-old son. Long also has a 21-year-old son from a previous relationship.
She shared her feeling on marriage in December 2020 on Essence’s Yes Girl podcast saying, “Love is complicated … and then you start a marriage, which I’ve never been married. And there’s a reason for that because I don’t know that I need to say ‘I do to prove to you that I love you. But also, what does marriage really [mean] … that you own me now and I own you? I don’t get that part.”
The victory earns a six-year term for Warnock and gives Democrats a 51-49 edge in the Senate.
Former President Obama spoke during Warnock’s campaign, mentioning Walker’s debate of “whether it’s better to be a vampire or a werewolf. This is a debate that, I must confess, I once had myself. When I was seven.”

The campaign ran into other moments, when Warnock also made a mockery of the former NFL players false statements claiming he worked as a cop.
Nothing topped the moment when, Senator Lindsey Graham in so many words addressed Walker as a token for the Republican party. “Walker changes the entire narrative… We’re a party of racists, Sean, me and you are racist and the party is racist and what happens when the Republican party elects and nominates Walker.”

The University of Virginia has awarded posthumous degrees to three football players that were fatally shot last month.
Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry were shot and killed while returning from a field trip to Washington D.C. by the suspect, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr.
All three students were a part of the College of Arts & Sciences. An Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs Rachel Most made the request.
Davis majored in African American and African studies; Perry double majored in studio art and in African American and African studies; Chandler majored in American studies.
Jones was a student and former member of the football team attending the trip. He is currently in a Charlottesville jail without the option of bail.
Prosecutors are charging him with three counts of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in addition to, two counts of malicious wounding and additional gun-related charges. A status hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
UVA Athletic Director Carla Williams called it “a great honor to be a part of presenting these diplomas to the families of Devin, Lavel and D’Sean.”
A spokesman for Cosby said the actor denies the allegations.

Donald Trump himself isn’t charged and he has called the trial politically motivated.

Officers Will Receive Congressional Medals For January 6th
It’s been two years since the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Officers who were present will be recognized with the highest honor, they will be given Congressional Gold Medals for their bravery during the attack on January 6th.
Traumatizing and terrorizing the dozens of officers who defended and fought the mob of Trump supporters that forced their way into the Capitol will be awarded on January 6th.
Four of those officers testified, describing their near-death experience. Two officers died by suicide days following the riot.
According to NBC ,”the medals will be placed in four locations at U.S. Capitol Police headquarters, the Metropolitan Police Department, the Capitol, and the Smithsonian Institution.”
