The Daily Drum takes a special moment to honor a powerful legacy in American history, that of the Buffalo Soldiers, while spotlighting an exciting event happening this weekend that brings the community together in remembrance, education, and celebration.
We’re sitting down with members of the Buffalo Soldiers of Maryland Foundation, Inc., an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy, contributions, and courage of the original Buffalo Soldiers.
Tonight’s Guests:
Lonnie “Signal” Bellamy – Chairman, Buffalo Soldiers of Maryland Foundation, Inc.
Mason “Money” Monroe – Co-Founder, Buffalo Soldiers of Maryland Foundation, Inc.
Sam “Simba” Watkins – Co-Chairman, Buffalo Thunder 2025
Allan “G-Man” Herring – Community Outreach Coordinator, Buffalo Soldiers of Maryland
They join us to reflect on the past, honor fallen heroes, and invite the public to an unforgettable community event this weekend: Buffalo Thunder 2025.
The Buffalo Soldiers were officially established by the U.S. Army in 1866, just after the Civil War.
The nickname “Buffalo Soldier” was given by Native American tribes, inspired by the soldiers’ resilience and the texture of their hair, which reminded them of buffalo fur.
These African American regiments played a vital role in westward expansion — protecting settlers, building roads and telegraph lines, escorting stagecoaches, and serving in conflicts including the Indian Wars and Spanish-American War.
The legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers laid the foundation for generations of Black service members in the U.S. military.
Don’t miss Buffalo Thunder 2025, a powerful gathering honoring the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers while engaging the community through education, celebration, and outreach. The event includes historical exhibits, live performances, community awards, and family-friendly activities.
Kendrick Lamar’s hit single “Not Like Us” has catapulted the Compton rapper to new heights, fueling a wave of critical acclaim, chart dominance, and a record-shattering tour alongside SZA.
The track, which spent over a year on the Billboard Hot 100, exemplifies Lamar’s signature authenticity, fearless storytelling, and refusal to follow industry trends, qualities that have made him a cultural icon with a devoted global fan base.
Now, Lamar’s Grand National Tour with SZA is rewriting the rules of rap tours. Their recent performance in Seattle grossed a staggering $14.8 million, making Lamar the first rapper to earn over $14 million in a single show. Nearly 61,000 fans attended, surpassing his previous record set in Dallas. Meanwhile, “Luther,” his chart-topping collaboration with SZA, held the No. 1 spot for 13 weeks, becoming the longest-charting Hip Hop No. 1 in history.
In a surprising shift, Lamar has taken a backseat on this co-headlining tour, ceding stage time and spotlight to SZA, allowing her elaborate staging and space to shine. Their creative chemistry has sparked fan speculation about a future joint project. Lamar’s evolution from rap king to collaborative visionary cements his place as a transformative force in music.
R&B superstar Chris Brown has been released on bail after being arrested in London for an alleged assault that occurred two years ago at a nightclub. According to authorities, Brown is accused of striking a man over the head with a bottle of tequila during a late-night altercation. The arrest stems from an investigation that had been ongoing since the 2022 incident, which resurfaced after new evidence came to light.
Despite legal concerns and growing speculation among fans, representatives for Brown have confirmed that his upcoming international tour will continue as planned. The singer has not publicly commented on the charges but is expected to appear in court at a later date.
Hip-hop mogul 50 Cent took to Instagram shortly after the news broke to show his support for Brown. In a post, he praised the artist as “the best overall talent in the game,” referencing their past musical collaborations and long-standing friendship. 50 Cent also revealed that Brown nearly signed with his G-Unit label as a child, but the group ultimately decided against it, believing it would be too difficult to market a young artist at the time.
The case is ongoing as Brown maintains his focus on music and touring.
A federal judge has halted former President Trump’s plan to dismantle the Education Department, ordering the rehiring of fired employees amid concerns of widespread harm to schools.
A federal judge has blocked former President Trump’s executive order aimed at dismantling the U.S. Department of Education and has ordered the reinstatement of employees who were recently terminated.
The decision comes after school districts and education advocacy groups filed a lawsuit arguing that the abrupt layoffs posed a risk of irreparable harm to students and schools nationwide. The judge granted a preliminary injunction, halting further action under the executive order.
The Trump administration has maintained that the move is part of a broader efficiency effort rather than a full shutdown of the department. However, the judge noted that the scope and impact of the terminations suggest otherwise, prompting the court to reverse the dismissals.
While the administration acknowledged that the restructuring may cause temporary service disruptions, it stated its intent to continue meeting all statutory obligations.
While headlines often focus on stock market gains or employment stats, a growing financial crisis is quietly impacting the lives of thousands of working families in the DMV. On The Daily Drum on WHUR 96.3, we’re taking a deeper look into the newly released State of ALICE Report:
2025 Update on Financial Hardship from the United Way of the National Capital Area.
Who Is ALICE?
ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — households earning more than the Federal Poverty Level but not enough to afford life’s basic essentials like:
Housing
Food
Childcare
Transportation
Healthcare
These households make up a shocking 33% of the DMV region — that’s more than 682,000 families struggling to survive despite working full- or part-time jobs.
Tonight’s Guests on The Daily Drum:
Rosie Allen-Herring, President & CEO, United Way NCA
Scott Mengebier, Senior Director of Research & Evaluation, United Way NCA
They’ll help break down what’s driving these troubling statistics and what’s being done to offer real solutions.
What’s Behind the Numbers?
The report points to several contributing factors:
Wages not keeping pace with the cost of living
Rollbacks on pandemic-era safety net programs
Underemployment and lack of benefits
An increase in laid-off federal workers and contractors nearing the end of their severance or unemployment benefits
Even nonprofits that have traditionally filled the gap are struggling. DMV food banks report losing more than 1.5 million meals due to federal funding cuts.
A 24-Day Call to Action: Do More 24
The Do More 24 Campaign by United Way NCA is a 24-day movement designed to raise awareness, funding, and action for households below the ALICE Threshold.
It’s a chance for individuals, local businesses, and community leaders to make a tangible difference through:
Donations
Volunteerism
Advocacy
Resource sharing
Why This Affects Everyone
When essential workers can’t afford to live in the communities they serve, it impacts us all — from healthcare access to education quality and workforce stability.

President Donald Trump on Monday suggested that former President Joe Biden delayed disclosing his prostate cancer diagnosis, implying a cover-up by the Biden White House. He criticized what he called a lack of transparency around Biden’s health, contrasting it with his own recent prostate cancer screening and cognitive test, according to NPR.
“I’m surprised the public wasn’t notified a long time ago,” Trump said, mistakenly referring to a non-existent “Stage 9” cancer. “Because to get to Stage 9, that’s a long time.”
Trump also lashed out at Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé, and Oprah Winfrey for endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, calling them “corrupt and unlawful.” On his Truth Social platform, he wrote: “How much did Kamala Harris pay Bruce Springsteen for his poor performance during her campaign for President?”
He continued, “I’m going to call for a major investigation into this matter. Candidates aren’t allowed to pay for endorsements, which is what Kamala did, under the guise of paying for entertainment. This was a very expensive and desperate effort to artificially build up her sparse crowds. It’s not legal!”
Springsteen responded during a concert in Manchester, criticizing the current administration for “corruption and incompetence.” His remarks drew a mixed reaction. Some fans applauded his message, while others questioned the appropriateness of criticizing the U.S. president while abroad.
Springsteen, a longtime political activist, has consistently used his platform to advocate for social justice and democratic values. Despite election outcomes, he continues to publicly support candidates he believes will promote American unity and integrity.
Meanwhile, some critics suggest Trump’s recent comments reflect a deeper spiral, particularly as questions swirl around whether he will inherit a $400 million aircraft, reportedly under review due to mounting legal and financial scrutiny.

As graphic testimony and sensational headlines continue to surface in the Sean “Diddy” Combs sex trafficking trial, mental health experts and survivor advocates are raising a red flag: the emotional impact on survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Tonight on The Daily Drum, we explored how the disturbing nature of these revelations can serve as painful reminders for those who have lived through abuse. From fear and pain to anger and helplessness, the emotional toll is real and profound. To help navigate these complex emotions, we were joined by two leading advocates who work tirelessly to support survivors and promote trauma-informed care.
Our Featured Guests
Dr. Denise McCain – Director, Prince George’s County Family Justice Center
Dr. Indira Henard – President and CEO, DC Rape Crisis Center
Why This Trial Feels Different
While high-profile trials involving abuse are not new, this case has shocked even seasoned observers due to the disturbing video content and explicit testimony particularly that of singer Cassie Ventura. The coverage has sparked intense online debate, with some questioning whether Cassie was a victim of sex trafficking or a willing participant. Advocates stress that this confusion highlights the public’s limited understanding of coercion, power dynamics, and trauma bonding in abusive relationships.
Fast Facts on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
Nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the U.S. have experienced rape in their lifetime (National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey).
Fewer than 20% of sexual assaults are reported to police, often due to fear, shame, or concern they won’t be believed (U.S. Justice Department).
Survivors face higher rates of anxiety, depression, and PTSD (National Domestic Violence Hotline).
An estimated 15.5 million children live in households impacted by domestic violence (U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services).
On a typical day, 70,000+ adults and children receive services from U.S. domestic violence programs (National Network to End Domestic Violence).
They also offered practical advice on how survivors can prioritize their mental health and how loved ones can support them during triggering news cycles.
Support and Resources
Both the Prince George’s County Family Justice Center and the DC Rape Crisis Center provide:
Confidential counseling and therapy
Support groups and peer-led discussions
Emergency shelter and legal advocacy
Educational outreach and prevention programs
If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Help is available, and you are not alone.
The media’s portrayal of high-profile abuse cases must be handled with care and compassion. Survivors deserve coverage that centers their voices and promotes understanding, not judgment. As our guests reminded us tonight, healing is not only possible it is supported by a vast network of advocates ready to help.

Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, his office said Sunday.
Biden was seen by doctors last week after urinary symptoms and a prostate nodule were found. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer on Friday, with the cancer cells having spread to the bone.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” his office said. “The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”
Prostate cancers are given a score called a Gleason score that measures, on a scale of 1 to 10, how the cancerous cells look compared with normal cells. Biden’s office said his score was 9, suggesting his cancer is among the most aggressive.
When prostate cancer spreads to other parts of the body, it often spreads to the bones. Metastasized cancer is much harder to treat than localized cancer because it can be hard for drugs to reach all the tumors and completely root out the disease.
Many political leaders sent Biden their wishes for his recovery.
President Donald Trump, a longtime political opponent, posted on social media that he was saddened by the news and “we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”
Biden’s vice president, Kamala Harris, said on social media that she was keeping him in her family’s “hearts and prayers during this time.”
“Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership,” Harris wrote.
A 2-year-old boy survived a fall from the 15th floor of an apartment building in Silver Spring after landing in bushes that helped break his fall, according to NBC Washington.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported the toddler to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities say the child landed in a patch of bushes outside the building.
The circumstances surrounding the fall remain unclear. Investigators are continuing to look into the incident, and no criminal charges have been filed at this time.
This story will be updated as new information becomes available.
Apple has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of violating user privacy through its Siri voice assistant, USA Today reports.
The lawsuit, Lopez v. Apple, was filed in 2021 and claimed that Siri sometimes activated unintentionally, recording confidential or private conversations without users’ knowledge or consent. These recordings were allegedly accessed by Apple or shared with third parties. Apple has denied all allegations but has agreed to settle the case.
According to settlement documents, individuals may be eligible for compensation if they owned or purchased a Siri-enabled device and experienced unintended Siri activation during a private conversation between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024.
While Apple maintains that it has always prioritized user privacy, this lawsuit raised concerns over how voice assistant technology can sometimes overstep boundaries.
Consumers interested in the settlement should stay tuned for details on how to file a claim. This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing balance between technological convenience and digital privacy.

ABC News reports that a Los Angeles judge has granted a restraining order to actor and singer Halle Bailey, best known for her role in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, against her ex-boyfriend, rapper DDG, citing repeated instances of violence and abuse.
In court documents, Bailey expressed fear for both herself and their 17-month-old son, Halo, detailing allegations of physical, verbal, emotional, and financial abuse. The judge ordered DDG to stay away from Bailey and their son until a hearing scheduled for June 6, and also prohibited him from possessing any weapons.
Bailey additionally requested that DDG refrain from using his social media platforms to incite hostility against her. “Throughout our relationship,” Bailey stated in her petition, “Daryl has been and continues to be physically, verbally, emotionally, and financially abusive towards me. I am seeking orders to protect myself and our son Halo from his ongoing abuse.”
DDG, a prominent hip-hop artist, released his fourth studio album in May. Bailey, a Grammy-nominated performer, has starred in the series Grown-ish and played the lead in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

We address a tragic and preventable crisis: traffic crashes remain a leading cause of death for youth aged 15 to 20. As we move into May through August, peak season for teen driving fatalities, we’re sounding the alarm on what’s behind the statistics and how we can turn the tide.
Celebrations like prom, graduation, and the freedom of summer often come with increased driving, distractions, and, too often, alcohol and substance use. We’ll discuss prevention, education, and the role of parents and peers in keeping teens safe.
Joining us are Kurt Gregory Erickson, President & CEO of the Washington Regional Alcohol Program, and John McCarthy, State’s Attorney for Montgomery County.
From underage drinking and distracted driving to the power of community awareness and stricter enforcement, we’ll explore solutions that work. Buckling up, making smart choices, and enforcing laws can save lives, but we must act now.
This is a conversation about responsibility, reality, and readiness. Let’s talk about how to protect our youth before another life is lost on the road.

UPDATE: May 13, 2025
As Cassie Ventura’s testimony breaks for lunch, she has already revealed disturbing details about her relationship with Sean “Diddy” Combs, including accounts of alleged abuse and so-called “freak-offs,” according to AP News.
“If they were violent arguments, it would usually result in some sort of physical abuse and dragging just different things,” Ventura stated.
Describing Combs’ behavior, she added, “He didn’t know what ‘no’ could be, or what ‘no’ could turn into.”
Ventura recounted being “barely 22” when she was asked to participate in what she called “freak-offs”, marathon sex sessions lasting 36 to 48 hours. “Freak-offs became a job where there was no space to do anything else but recover and just try to feel normal again,” she said.

On Tuesday, Cassie Ventura is preparing to testify, as her husband, Alex Fine, has been barred from watching her give her testimony.
Monday, the trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs for sex trafficking began with explosive testimony from the prosecution’s first witness, Daniel Philip, a male escort who made explicit claims about his sexual encounters with Diddy and singer Cassie Ventura, according to CNN.
Philip testified that he was paid thousands of dollars to participate in sexual acts with Cassie while Diddy watched and sometimes gave instructions. He further alleged that he witnessed Diddy physically assault Cassie on multiple occasions, including throwing a bottle at her and dragging her by the hair. Philip also stated that he felt intimidated by Diddy and was given MDMA (a lab-made (synthetic) drug that has effects similar to stimulants like methamphetamine) by him, which made him physically ill.
Meanwhile, social media erupted with reactions to video footage showing Cassie’s husband, Alex Fine, leaving a New York City courthouse following the first day of proceedings. Wearing black sunglasses and a matching outfit, Fine exited the building through a crowd of reporters, drawing praise online for his composure and quiet presence.

Imprisoned former rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight, who is serving a 28-year sentence for a deadly hit-and-run, has urged his longtime rival Sean “Diddy” Combs to testify in his ongoing trial.
Knight believes Combs should “humanize” himself by telling his truth on the stand. Combs faces charges including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking and could face life in prison if convicted.
The two have a long-standing rivalry dating back to the 1990s when they were prominent figures in the rap industry.
Knight’s recent comments have brought attention to their feud and the ongoing trial.

According to the organization, a bodyguard named Bradley James, who was allegedly employed by Kelsey Harris,Megan Thee Stallion’s former friend, claims to have overheard Harris admitting to firing the weapon that injured the rapper.
James reportedly stated, “She fired the gun three times, at which point Tory grabbed her arm and knocked it down, causing the weapon to discharge two additional times.”
In response to the allegations, attorney Alex Spiro, who represents Megan Thee Stallion, told TMZ: “Tory Lanez was tried and convicted by a jury of his peers, and his case was properly adjudicated through the court system. This is not a political matter, this is a case of a violent assault that was resolved in a court of law.”
Lanez is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence following his conviction in the high-profile case.ORIGINAL POST: May 12, 2025
Daystar Peterson, known professionally as Tory Lanez, was reportedly stabbed in the prison yard of California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi and subsequently hospitalized for treatment.
While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, Lanez was rushed to a nearby hospital in Bakersfield for emergency care.
California Department of Corrections inmate Santino Casio, 42
A post shared on his Instagram account stating Lanez was stabbed 14 times – including 7 wounds to his back, four to his torso, two to the back of his head, and one to the left side of his face. The statement added that both of his lungs collapsed, and he was initially placed on a breathing apparatus.
“He is now breathing on his own,” the post continued. “Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits, and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through. He also wants to thank everyone for their continued prayers and support.”
Lanez is currently serving a 10-year sentence for the 2020 shooting of rapper Megan Thee Stallion, a case that is still the subject of ongoing legal proceedings.

A beloved grandmother and local reverend was tragically shot and killed while babysitting her grandchildren during a family gathering in Landover, Maryland.
According to FOX 5, 54-year-old Rev. Leslie Yvette Davis was hosting a special Mother’s Day sleepover for her four young grandchildren when the unthinkable happened. Davis’ daughters, Billie and Apri, arrived at the home and made the heartbreaking discovery of their mother’s body in her bedroom. Authorities say two of the children were near the scene but were not physically harmed.
“We’re calling her name, and then the kids were like, ‘No, Grandma’s lying over there’.” Billie recalled. “She was in between her bed and the window, and she was dead. She had been shot.”
Police believe the shooting may have been the result of mistaken identity or a misdirected act of violence. The family and local community are devastated, struggling to comprehend how a joyous family occasion turned into a nightmare.
Rev. Davis was not only a spiritual leader but also a source of strength and love for her family. The Prince George’s County Police Department is actively investigating, and the family is pleading with the public to come forward with any information that may lead to justice.
President Trump’s efforts to wield the IRS for political purposes echo the tactics of former President Richard Nixon, who notoriously sought to punish enemies and reward allies through the tax agency.
According to NPR, “Former President Richard Nixon laid the groundwork more than four decades ago, when he tried to use the tax collector to punish his enemies and assist his friends.” Although Nixon’s attempts to target individuals through their tax returns were often unsuccessful, they led Congress to implement laws aimed at preventing such abuses.
The Trump administration has tested those boundaries—sharing taxpayer data with immigration authorities and threatening to revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status. “We are going to be taking away Harvard’s Tax Exempt Status,” Trump declared in a social media post. “It’s what they deserve!”
Critics warn that politicizing the IRS poses serious risks, especially if the agency is pressured to share data improperly. At the same time, administration-backed cuts to IRS staffing could weaken tax enforcement and strain the federal budget.

Smokey Robinson’s attorney has strongly denied allegations of rape and sexual assault brought against the music legend, describing the claims as “vile” and “false.”
The lawsuit, filed by four former housekeepers seeking at least $50 million in damages, accuses Robinson of sexually assaulting them between 2007 and 2024.
According to ABC News, Robinson’s attorney, Christopher Frost, dismissed the claims as “bizarre theatrics,” asserting that evidence will prove the allegations are baseless.
“This is simply an ugly method of trying to extract money from an 85-year-old American icon,” Frost said.
The plaintiffs, who remain anonymous, allege that Robinson raped and sexually assaulted them over a span of years, stating they feared retaliation and public humiliation if they spoke out.
“We will be addressing the numerous aspects of the complaint that defy credulity,” Frost added, “as well as issues relating to purported timelines, inconsistencies, and relationships between the plaintiffs and others.”

The 2025 Met Gala, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” took place on Monday night and boldly celebrated the beauty, depth, and influence of Black culture and style.
Pharrell Williams, one of this year’s co-chairs, promised an impactful evening that would honor the color Black — not just in fabric, but in spirit. The official dress code, “Tailored for You,” drew inspiration from the Costume Institute’s exhibition on menswear and the enduring legacy of Black dandyism, elegance, and self-expression.
Rihanna once again shut down the red carpet with a headline-making moment, revealing her third pregnancy in high fashion. Dressed in a custom Marc Jacobs look, a structured gray bustier, a flowing black floor-length skirt, a cropped black jacket, and matching tie and hat crafted by legendary milliner Stephen Jones, Rihanna exuded style and power. Her look was the perfect complement to her partner A$AP Rocky, a co-chair of this year’s event.
Famous for redefining maternity fashion on red carpets, Rihanna has never let pregnancy dim her shine. This marks her third child with A$AP Rocky, adding to their growing family of two sons. As a longtime Met Gala icon, she once again proved why she reigns supreme on the steps of the Met.
But the night belonged to more than just one moment.
“Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” was not simply about fashion; it was about freedom, legacy, and resistance. Every ensemble told a deeper story of migration, joy, perseverance, pride, and identity. Black style has always been “superfine,” but on this night, the world didn’t just admire it; they stood in awe of it.
