Michael B. Jordan May Be DC Films’ New Superman

“The word has been out that Warner Bros. has been mulling a completely different direction with its Superman canon for some time, even considering casting Michael B. Jordan in the role down the road.”

Contributed by Rebecca Johnson

DC Films has been sifting through high-profile actors in an effort to keep their comic book characters relevant. Michael B. Jordan had a meeting with Warner Bros. earlier this year, where he pitched his vision for DC’s superman, according to Variety. Nothing is concrete, yet.

“However, Jordan isn’t ready to commit to taking on the project since filming doesn’t seem likely to happen for several years and he has a full dance card of projects. Insiders think that a new Superman film is unlikely to hit screens before 2023, given that there’s no script and no director attached,” said Variety.

Deadline also shared that he is up for the role.

“The word has been out that Warner Bros. has been mulling a completely different direction with its Superman canon for some time, even considering casting Michael B. Jordan in the role down the road.”

Jordan portrayed Johnny Storm/Human Torch in Fox’s Marvel Fantastic Four reboot in 2015. In 2018, he starred as Erik Killmonger in the critically-acclaimed Disney Marvel film Black Panther, according to Shadow and Act.

Jordan’s lasted film, Just Mercy, will be released Christmas Day 2019 and he is starring alongside Jaime Foxx.

NBC Issues Statement About Gabrielle Union’s Exit For ‘AGT’

“We are working with Ms. Union through her representatives to hear more about her concerns, following which we will take whatever next steps may be appropriate.”

Contributed by Rebecca Johnson

Late November, NBC announced their decision to not to bring Gabrielle Union back as a judge for America’s Got Talent. Sources said that she was let go after speaking up against discrimination on the job. Producers from NBC and AGT have finally released a statement responding to the backlash they received.

“We remain committed to ensuring a respectful workplace for all employees and take very seriously any questions about workplace culture,” says the statement according to Deadline. “We are working with Ms. Union through her representatives to hear more about her concerns, following which we will take whatever next steps may be appropriate.”

Waves of support from other celebrities and fans poured out on social media criticizing NBC’s decision.

SAG-AFTRA, a union that represents entertainers, also released a statement that they are investigating the situation as well.

“We immediately reached out to Ms. Union’s representatives when these reports came to light. It is our practice to work closely with members who reach out to us and their representatives in instances like this, as that usually affords the best protection and best resolution for the affected member,” they said according to Page Six.

So far, they have nothing to report of the investigation.

Getting In Some Big Shopping On Small Business Saturday

“I came out today to get a little something to eat because I was tired of eating Thanksgiving food. I had no idea when I came in to get a cup of my favorite gumbo that you guys would be here treating me,” said Alicia from NE.

Washington, D.C. (Monday, November 30, 2019) – Did you know that for every dollar you spend in a small local business, more than 60-cents of that dollar is typically generated back into the local community?  That’s just one of the key reasons why WHUR and Wells Fargo wanted to do some big shopping this weekend right in the DMV.  Saturday marked Small Business Saturday,  a day dedicated to supporting small businesses and communities across the country. Founded by American Express in 2010, this day is celebrated each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

WHUR and Wells Fargo hit the streets to patronize small businesses at Union Market, the Anacostia Arts Center, and the Shops at Iverson.  It was all part of  “Pay It Forward,” an initiative launched last summer to pop-up weekly at various business establishments to pay the bills of unsuspecting customers.  Saturday customers at District Doughnut, DC Puddin’, DC Proper, Tropical Smoothie, and Mahogany Books all got big surprises when WHUR Digital Reporter Candice Adkins announced “put your money away.  Your purchase is on us, courtesy of WHUR and Wells Fargo.”

“I came out today to get a little something to eat because I was tired of eating Thanksgiving food.  I had no idea when I came in to get a cup of my favorite gumbo that you guys would be here treating me,” said Alicia from NE.  “This is really kind and very surprising.”  Alicia’s response was echoed many times over as WHUR and Wells Fargo went to the different small businesses buying things like books, doughnuts, lunch, smoothies, sweat shirts, and more.  “We are so appreciative that WHUR and Wells Fargo chose our business to ‘pay it forward’ because this helps other to know about who we are and what we do,” said Michael Warren – Owner of DC Proper.

At a time when so many people go about their day being victims of rude or discourteous behavior, WHUR and Wells Fargo are working to spark a movement of generosity and kindness with Pay It Forward.  Just imagine the next time you’re in line feeling irritated that the line is moving slowly and WHUR and Wells Fargo said “I’ll pay for his/hers too.” That’s likely to put a smile on your face and encourage you to do the same the next time for someone else.

WHUR and Wells Fargo… Proud to Pay It Forward Where We Live.  Continue to follow us on all our social media platforms.  You never know where we will pop up next!!!

Super Bowl Preview? 49ers-Ravens Was Fun To Watch

“We left another statement out there on the field,” Ravens receiver Willie Snead said, “that we were for real.”

If this edition of 49ers-Ravens — filled with elite players, fourth-down gutsiness and top-notch defense on a rainy afternoon — was indeed a Super Bowl preview, everyone’s in for a treat in February.

What Baltimore’s 20-17 victory over visiting San Francisco on Sunday showed was that Lamar Jackson is as good as it gets. In addition to being a, if not the, leading MVP candidate, he’s as fun to watch as anyone in the sport. It also highlighted that teams can still thrive by running, that San Francisco is loaded with playmakers on both side of the ball and that watching John Harbaugh and Kyle Shanahan match wits makes for good theater.

And then there’s this: These clubs are both good and evenly matched. It took Justin Tucker’s 49-yard field goal on the final play to determine the outcome.

“Hopefully,” 49ers coach Shanahan said, “we can earn an opportunity to maybe get a chance to play them some other time.”

Jackson ran for one TD and also threw for one for Baltimore, which has won its past eight games and took over as the AFC’s No. 1 seed when the New England Patriots lost at night to the Houston Texans 28-22.

The Heisman Trophy winner at Louisville gained 101 yards on the ground, making him the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for at least 100 in four games during one season; the Ravens are 12-0 when he tops 70 in his nascent career.

Jackson also pulled off yet another juke that left a defender, this time K’Waun Williams, tumbling to the turf.

Only two teams, both way back in the 1970s, have run for more yards through 12 games than Baltimore has.

“We left another statement out there on the field,” Ravens receiver Willie Snead said, “that we were for real.”

So did the 49ers, who are 10-2, just like the Ravens.

They can run, just like the Ravens, with Raheem Mostert carrying 19 times for 146 yards, including a TD that went 40. And they can play defense, just like the Ravens.

“God willing, we make it to the end,” San Francisco’s DeForest Buckner said, “hopefully we go against them again.”

Fans might be thinking the same.

Sex Trafficking At An All-Time High In The DMV

Sex trafficking is at an all time high. Knowing the facts and tips about how to protect yourself during potentially dangerous situations can help save your life. Stay vigilant!

Contributed by Nadira Jamerson

This week, social media has been exploding with conversations about the widespread and often ignored problem of sex trafficking in the Unites States.

According to The Polaris Project–an organization dedicated to educating about and fighting against sex trafficking–there are an estimated 40.3 million victims of human trafficking globally, with 75% of this number being women and girls. They estimate that human trafficking is a $150 billion dollar industry worldwide. Sex trafficking also affects Black women and girls more than any other group in the United States. According to the FBI, 40% of victims of sex trafficking in the U.S. are African Americans. This statistic rises in bigger cities, such as Los Angeles where 92% of sex trafficking victims are African American. Also, in D.C. alone, 501 juveniles have gone missing in 2019 due to sex trafficking.

In light of this evidence surfacing on social media, many celebrities have begun to speak out against sex trafficking, while urging their followers to stay vigilant.

Many sex trafficking victims are taken during every day activities, such as while riding Uber and jogging alone early in the morning. It is important to understand the facts about sex trafficking so that you can know how to identify and escape potentially dangerous situations. Here are a few ways that you can help protect yourself and your loved ones from sex trafficking threats:

  1. Know the indicators so that you can spot potential victims and threats.
  2. Stay in groups when you are out in public.
  3. Avoid drinking too much when you go out.
  4. Avoid truck stops along the interstate when you’re traveling unless you can stay in groups here, too.
  5. Pay attention to your surroundings at all times.
  6. Always check the license plate of ride share drivers, and make sure your driver is following the GPS at all times during your ride.

Tyler Perry Rescues Couple Trapped In Mexican Hospital

Tyler Perry once again provides a helping hand to a family in need after they became trapped in a hospital in Mexico because they couldn’t pay the $14,000 bill.

Contributed by Jordyn Fields

Tyler Perry gave a helping hand to an Atlanta couple in crisis after they were barred from leaving a hospital in Progreso, Mexico without paying a $14,000 bill upfront.

Stephen Johnson and his fiancee Tori Austin had taken a vacation on a Carnival cruise ship in mid-November. When it was time for the two to dock in Mexico, Johnson was unable to leave the ship. He had gone into diabetic shock and the ships infirmary diagnosed him with kidney failure, pancreatitis and high glucose levels. Needing to be hospitalized, Johnson checked into the ICU in Progreso and the cruise ship made arrangements for the couple to rejoin the cruise in five days.

When it was time to check out the couple was informed the hospital required payment immediately.

“I asked how much the bill was and told them we’d figure it out when we got home,” Austin said to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The two did not have private insurance or credit cards with a high enough limit. It was reported that the local police and hospital staff physically stopped the couple from leaving after they said they couldn’t pay the bill on the spot.

“We’ve never been in this situation before. We’re used to the United States, where if you don’t have insurance they’ll bill you and we can pay it,” Austin told a local CBS affiliate. “It’s not that we’re trying to get out of paying the bill. We just don’t have the money right now.”

Once Johnson and Austin’s story went viral, they attracted the attention of actor and director, Tyler Perry.

“I’m going to pay your bill and I’m gonna bring you home,” Perry told Johnson.

Perry wired the money to the hospital and even offered to cover the couples travel back to Atlanta.

“I owe him my life and I hope to get to meet him when I get back to Atlanta because he deserved the biggest hug,” Johnson said.

Growing Eyelash Extension Industry Breeds More Cases Of Mites

“This is due to the fact that a lot of people who get extensions are afraid to wash their eyes and eyelashes due to the fact that they may damage the extensions which are costly and time consuming. As a result of not washing, this area becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and other parasites such as the Demodex.”

Doctors have noted a rise in cases of eyelash mites which can be linked to the growing popularity eyelash extensions. People are forgoing properly washing their eyes and eyelashes to preserve their extensions.

“This is due to the fact that a lot of people who get extensions are afraid to wash their eyes and eyelashes due to the fact that they may damage the extensions which are costly and time consuming. As a result of not washing, this area becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and other parasites such as the Demodex,” optometrist Dr. Sairah Malik said in KTVU.com.

According to Consumer Health Digest, an eyelash mite is found in the follicles of your face. They are mostly found in the nose and cheek area, but especially in the eyelash area. Usually, the mites are harmless and most people do not notice when they have them.

Some studies claim that mites’ presence can be beneficial since they remove dirt and oil from our follicles. But, too much of a good thing isn’t a good thing. When there are too many mites, people develop Demodex, where their eyelash area becomes irritated, infected and inflamed.

According to Dr. Malik, eyelashes act like a “sponge” for bacteria buildup, making it a prime home for mites to thrive.

If you suspect that you could have developed this, go see a doctor immediately to be diagnosed and to receive a prescribed treatment.

Retailers such as Target, sell over the counter treatments for Demodex and healthline reccommends cleaning your eyelashes with  50 percent diluted tea tree oil once a week.

In between Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes Small Business Saturday. American Express launched the shopping holiday in 2010 to get small businesses in on the holiday shopping action.

“According to the 2018 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey, total reported spending among U.S. consumers who said they shopped at independent retailers and restaurants on the day reached a record high of an estimated $17.8 billion,” according to the U.S. Small Business Administration that co-sponsors the day.

When we shop at a small business, we help out our neighbors and put money back into our own communities.

At a small business, you are less likely to find something that is mass produced and can get anywhere. It’s more likely that you’ll find something that is unique and original.

5. It will cause a chain reaction.

American Express created a guide for shoppers to participate in Small Business Saturday, but check your local resources for small businesses in your area. Happy shopping!

To help make the meal complete, Shabach Ministries, Inc. kicked in 100 bags of food filled with stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, bread, butter, white potatoes, greens, and more.

Washington, D.C. – (Monday, November 25, 2019) – Nothing says Thanksgiving like a turkey.  That’s exactly what the Steve Harvey Morning Show and 96.3 WHUR were serving up today by the dozens to families in need.  It was all part of the “Steve Harvey Morning Show Turkey Give,”an annual effort to put a traditional holiday meal on the table for dozens of families in the DMV.

This year, 100 turkeys were given to families serviced by the Alexandria Redevelopment Housing Authority in Virginia and the Rainbow Community Development Center in Montgomery County, Maryland.  To help make the meal complete, Shabach Ministries, Inc. kicked in 100 bags of food filled with  stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, bread, butter, white potatoes, greens, and more.

WHUR News Anchor Taylor Thomas from the Steve Harvey Morning Show was on hand to personally meet and greet the recipients.  “We are extremely grateful that WHUR, the Steve Harvey Morning Show, and Shabach Ministries picked our area to bless this year.  We know there are many families who may not have the resources and efforts like this one mean they can focus on other matters,” said Alexandria City Councilman John Chapman.

Pushing back tears, Ruth, who did not want to give her last name, was one of 50 persons at the Rainbow Center to get a turkey and a bag of food.  “I did not know what I was going to do this year for Thanksgiving.  This right here means everything to me,” said Ruth.

The turkey and food giveaway continues “WHUR’s Season of Giving.” Last week, the station hosted its 42nd Annual Thanksgiving Food2Feed Radiothon, raising nearly $25,000.  That’s enough to provide 66-thousand meals for needy families in the DMV for the holiday season.  “There’s no greater mission for us as a station than to serve our community.  We have the best listeners on the planet and giving back to those in need is what we are all about,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.

WHUR will host its Annual Children’s Toy Drive Saturday, December 14th from 12pm to 5pm at the Shops at Iverson to round out its “Season of Giving.”  The radio station is calling on listeners to drop off a new unwrapped toy to help spread some holiday joy for children  in need.
