What Are You Thankful For?

Join us as we examine the issue of thankfulness during this Thanksgiving holiday.

This is the season to be thankful.  Tomorrow isn’t just about turkey and all the trimmings.  For many of us… it’s a time to sit back and reflect on the things we’re grateful for… big and small.  As we do every year… we ask you what you’re thankful for and what it really means.

Amazon Plans to Give $20 Million For Affordable Housing In Va

A vote on the proposal by the Arlington County Board is not expected until mid December. The new $2 million dollar state of the art site will create more than 25,000 high end jobs over the 12 years.

Online retail giant Amazon is promising to give $20 million to help to create affordable housing options in Northern Virginia. Their plan is to build two 22-story office building in Crystal City.

The offer is apart of its commitment made to Arlington County officials once they decided to make the area their HQ2 site. The deal would also help improvements of bus shelters, bike share stations, and even childcare facilities in the community.

A vote on the proposal by the Arlington County Board is not expected until mid-December. The new 2 million dollar state of the art site will create more than 25,000 high-end jobs over the 12 years.

It’s good news for realtors who say the six-figure jobs will ultimately lead to home purchases. In fact, realtors and homeowners are already benefiting. News of Amazon making Arlington one of his headquarters has already caused home prices to skyrocket.

SHMS Provides Turkeys To Families In The DMV

100 turkeys were given to families serviced by the Alexandria Redevelopment Housing Authority in Virginia and the Rainbow Community Development Center in Montgomery County, Maryland. To help make the meal complete, Shabach Ministries, Inc. kicked in 100 bags of food filled with stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, bread, butter, white potatoes, greens, and more.

Washington, D.C. – (Monday, November 25, 2019) – Nothing says Thanksgiving like a turkey.  That’s exactly what the Steve Harvey Morning Show and 96.3 WHUR were serving up today by the dozens to families in need.  It was all part of the “Steve Harvey Morning Show Turkey Give,”an annual effort to put a traditional holiday meal on the table for dozens of families in the DMV.

This year, 100 turkeys were given to families serviced by the Alexandria Redevelopment Housing Authority in Virginia and the Rainbow Community Development Center in Montgomery County, Maryland.  To help make the meal complete, Shabach Ministries, Inc. kicked in 100 bags of food filled with  stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, bread, butter, white potatoes, greens, and more.

WHUR News Anchor Taylor Thomas from the Steve Harvey Morning Show was on hand to personally meet and greet the recipients.  “We are extremely grateful that WHUR, the Steve Harvey Morning Show, and Shabach Ministries picked our area to bless this year.  We know there are many families who may not have the resources and efforts like this one mean they can focus on other matters,” said Alexandria City Councilman John Chapman.

Pushing back tears, Ruth, who did not want to give her last name, was one of 50 persons at the Rainbow Center to get a turkey and a bag of food.  “I did not know what I was going to do this year for Thanksgiving.  This right here means everything to me,” said Ruth.

The turkey and food giveaway continues “WHUR’s Season of Giving.” Last week, the station hosted its 42nd Annual Thanksgiving Food2Feed Radiothon, raising nearly $25,000.  That’s enough to provide 66-thousand meals for needy families in the DMV for the holiday season.  “There’s no greater mission for us as a station than to serve our community.  We have the best listeners on the planet and giving back to those in need is what we are all about,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.

WHUR will host its Annual Children’s Toy Drive Saturday, December 14th from 12pm to 5pm at the Shops at Iverson to round out its “Season of Giving.”  The radio station is calling on listeners to drop off a new unwrapped toy to help spread some holiday joy for children  in need.

Planned Parenthood and others blasted T.I. when he told the “Ladies Like Us” podcast that he takes “yearly trips to the gynecologist” with his now 18-year-old daughter.

NEW YORK (AP) — Rapper T.I. says he was joking when he said he goes to the gynecologist with his daughter every year to make sure her hymen is “still intact.”

The performer, who received backlash when the comments went viral earlier this month, told Jada Pinkett-Smith on Monday’s episode of “Red Table Talk” that he also apologized to his daughter.

Says T.I.: “I began to embellish and exaggerate, and I think a lot of people kind of took it extremely literal.”

T.I. Takes Seat At Red Table To Talk Fatherhood

T.I. sits down with Jada Pinkett-Smith on Red Table Talk to clarify the comments he made about his daughter.

Contributed by Jordyn Fields

T.I has had the internet in flames after making comments about attending gynecologist visits with his daughter to check for her virginity. The likes of Tyrana Burke, founder of the Me Too Movement, and Michael Eric Dyson spoke out against the rapper. To clear up the drama, T.I and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris paid a visit to Jada Pinkett- Smith‘s Red Table Talk.

To clarify, T.I says his daughter and her mother never had a  problem with his attendance. He also says he never asked for an appointment to be made or went in the exam room. He was just trying to be a present father he says.

“I want to learn from you,” T.I says to Pinkett and her mother. ” I have three powerful, independent, brilliant women and I want to know what is the purpose and place of a father in this society?”

Pinkett-Smith and her mother agree by saying that there are just certain things opposite genders cant understand about raising kids.

“Love your daughter, let me [her mother] teach her,” Pinkett responds. ” There’s certain sensitivities that you might not understand and have just because your relationship in the world is different than a woman’s relationship.”

T.I expresses that he wants to make sure his children are ready to take that next step “int0 adulthood,” because it comes with a new level of responsibility.

“I think that In the age or the time where our women, black women, are the most unprotected, unattended, disregarded women on the planet, I’m being criticized because I’m willing to go above and beyond to protect mine.”

As he speaks with the women present, T.I says he is starting to understand the differnces women go through and how his comments were misinformed.

The conversation continues next week with T.I.

Gabrielle Union Will Not Be Returning To ‘AGT’

“Gabrielle Union’s contract was not renewed, she was on a one year deal and NBC decided not to pick her up again.” Insiders are now speculating that her “firing” may be racially motivated.

Gabrielle Union has reportedly left America’s Got Talent after one season as a celebrity host.

According to MTONews, “Gabrielle Union’s contract was not renewed, she was on a one year deal and NBC decided not to pick her up again.” Insiders are now speculating that her “firing” may be racially motivated.

‘America’s Got Talent’ is a competitive talent show that airs on NBC and Union is considered one of the most popular host on the show. Cheatsheet.com reports that, “NBC sources told lovebscott.com that Union got canned after speaking out about “problematic” situations involving racism, sexism, and more.”

Surprisingly, this is not the first incident involving a host speaking out about the work environment on ‘America’s Got Talent.’ Two seasons ago, Nick Cannon left the show and turned down a $10 million contract. In 2017, USA Today reported on Cannon’s comments on Facebook saying, “My soul won’t allow me to be in business with corporations that attempt to frown on freedom of speech, censor artists, and question cultural choices.”

Union is continuing to work on her fashion line with New York & Company and has not made a public statement on the issue.

NFL Teams Have Not Contacted Colin Kaepernick Post Workout

In a statement he made to the media after his workout he says, “I’ve been ready for three years. I’ve been denied for three years. We all know why I came out here today…”

Contributed by Amber Cooper

On Nov.16, Colin Kapernick worked out for seven NFL Teams at Charles R. Drew High School in Riverdale, Georgia.

It’s been more than a week later and Kaepernick has not been contacted by any NFL Teams, according to ESPN. Kaepernick worked out in front of representatives from the Niners, Eagles, Chiefs, Jets, Redskins, Lions and Titans.

The original workout was scheduled to take place at the Falcons training facility, but there were disputes over media attendance and a liability waiver. Kaepernick was planning to workout in front of at least 25 teams, but was still able to perform for the seven that showed up.

Kaepernick is ready for the league to “stop running.” In a statement he made to the media after his workout he says, “I’ve been ready for three years. I’ve been denied for three years. We all know why I came out here today and showed it in front of everybody. We have nothing to hide.”

Kaepernick has been ready to work and continues to train everyday.

Diahann Carroll’s Legacy As A Trailblazer Remembered

NEW YORK (AP) — At the poignant memorial service for Diahann Carroll, the Oscar-nominated actress was remembered for all the things that made her famous — her glamour, her sublime talent, her beauty and her elegance.

But with each luminary and loved one who remembered her, what was also underscored was her role as a trailblazer — the barriers she broke as a black entertainer and the doors she opened for so many more to follow.

“She was able to demonstrate what is possible, through hard work and commitment,” said friend Laurence Fishburne, one of several who spoke to her legacy on Sunday at the Helen Hayes Theater. “Not just a passion for her art but a deeper yearning, a yearning to create something meaningful, something truthful, something deeply human, and something timeless.”

Fishburne was joined by Cicely Tyson, Angela Bassett, Lenny Kravitz, Lynn Whitfield and more who memorialized her on stage; in the audience, those paying tribute included Phylicia Rashad, Vanessa Williams, Judith Jamison, Valerie Simpson and Jasmine Guy, who played her TV daughter in the TV series “A Different World.”

Carroll died on Oct. 4 at the age of 84 after a bout with breast cancer. Her career spanned the decades, and she logged several “firsts” as a black actress, including the first to star as a non-servant in her own television show with the series “Julia,” in which she played a widowed nurse raising a young son. It ran from 1968 to 1973.

She was also one of the handful of black women to be nominated for best actress at the Academy Awards for her role as a struggling single mother on government assistance who finds love with a sanitation worker in the 1974 movie “Claudine.”

Her other roles included the fierce and fabulous Dominique Devereaux on the 1980s soap opera “Dynasty,” one of three sisters in the TV drama movie “Sister, Sister” and as the voodoo priestess in the movie “Eve’s Bayou.”

It was on that film where she and Whitfield worked together, but Whitfield remembered seeing Carroll decades earlier on stage when she was a girl —“my awestruck introduction to the stunning woman. Everything about her said, ‘It can be done.’”

She wasn’t the only one who wanted to follow in her glamorous footsteps. Dionne Warwick, who sent in an audio tribute, recalls the first time she saw Carroll perform; she spent the concert writing down notes.

“I wanted to be the same thing she was,” Warwick recalled. “I was in class basically.”

Warwick, who fondly recalled Carroll dubbing her “little girl,” also remembered being chastised by Carroll one day when she went to the grocery store early in the morning, barefaced.

“Here’s this most glamorous woman … and she wanted to know what I was doing … in the grocery store without makeup,” she said, to the laughter of the crowd.

Kravitz, who lovingly remembered her as Aunt D, recalled growing up with Carroll in his house, hanging out with his actress mother, the late Roxie Roker, and other black celebrities at the time. What he didn’t realize until later was “the impact they were having on our culture and our history.”

“These were hardworking, disciplined artists, the best of the best, who had to deal with immeasurable obstacles,” he said. “Diahann Carroll was a pioneer who forever changed the status quo, especially for women of color. The vision she had for herself set a precedent that still holds today. She saw the future, and it began then.”

Tyson recalled a decadeslong friendship, and recalled her “incredible” sense of humor that was unexpected to some: “Did that come from the elegant, swellegant, Diahann Carroll? Yes it did,” Tyson recalled.

Tyson went to see Carroll in her final days, and was shaken by how the star could barely talk, but said she was grateful she got to say her goodbye.

“I don’t know what I would have done had I learned she had passed on if I had neglected to go she her. I consider that a special blessing,” she said.

Tyson was one of several who read poems in her honor, including Angela Bassett, who performed “When the Great Trees Fall.”

There were also musical performances, including “A Sleepin’ Bee,” performed by Tony-nominated actress Denee Benton, which Carroll herself performed in the 1954 show “House of Flowers.” Dianne Reeves later performed “Black Bird,” by Paul McCartney, which Carroll’s daughter Suzanne Kay discovered was what her mother wanted played at her memorial service.

Kay said the song was fitting because Paul McCartney wrote it in tribute to black women during the civil rights movement.

When Kay went through her mother’s belongings after the entertainer’s death last month, she found a piece of paper with her mother’s handwriting on it that read: “The world is better because of me, an American black woman, and most assuredly because I am woman.”

“Some people might think that’s arrogance,” Kay said. “I don’t think so. I think she always understood her value, our value, and she carried that with her, and I think that’s why we all are here, that’s why people loved her,” Kay said.

Victoria’s Secret Cancels Fashion Show

Victoria’s Secret announced that it will be cancelling its annual fashion show, due to a decrease in viewership.

Contributed by Nadira Jamerson

Victoria’s Secret announced that it would be cancelling its annual fashion show this year, and all years in the future.

The annual fashion show, featuring supermodels in extravagent lingerie and angel wings, is usually held during the holiday season, in November or December. However, according to CNN, L Brands, the parent company of Victoria’s Secret, announced in an earnings call Thursday that it has cancelled the 2019 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, following a decline in viewership.

“We think it’s important to evolve the marketing of Victoria’s Secret,” L Brands chief financial officer Stuart Burgdoerfer said during the call.

This was the biggest event of the year for the compay, and many fans are wondering if Victoria’s Secret will be able to create something to fill its place. Additionally, due to the creation of more inclusive and diverse lingerie brands such as Savage x Fenty, Time Magazine reports that this cancellation is coming at a time of overall decline for the linergie brand.

“The announcement comes amid a difficult time for Victoria’s Secret, which has seen a fall in sales and a rise in criticism for its continued focus on what some say are oiutdated fashion and beauty ideals. Sales declined 7% in the latest quarter, compared to a 2% fall during the same time period last year,” said Mahita Gajanan, a reporter for Time Magazine.

There have been mixed reviews about the cancellation of this annual fashion show. Some fans are sad to see the end of this tradition, while others are eager to see if this cancellation will leave room for other, more inclusive brands to emerge.

Floyd Mayweather Announces Coming Out Of Retirement

Iconic boxer, Floys Mayweather, announced i na surpise Instagram post that he would be retruning to fighting in 2020.

Contributed by Nadira Jamerson

Floyd Mayweather has fans waiting in anticipation after his latest announcement that he will be coming out of retirement in 2020.

On Thuesday night, this iconic fighter posted a photo of him wearing boxing gear with the caption “Coming out of retirement in 2020.”

The announcement seemed bizarre to many, in light of Mayweather’s earlier statement this week that he would be never be returning to boxing. According to the NY Post, Mayweather said that he would be leaving this “very brutal sport.” In this same article, the 42-year olf boxer explained that he had been asked several times to return to the ring, but declined because “my health is my wealth.”

It is unclear why Mayweather has changed his mind and ended his retirement yet again. In 2015, Mayweather came out of retirement to fight McGregor. Some speculate that Mayweather may be retuning in order to have a rematch with Canelo Alvarez and Manny Pacquiao. There has also been talk that McGregor himself has been making remarks about another fight with Mayweather.

Mayweather himself only gave a vague announcement via Instagram that fans could expect an undescribed event with him and UFC boss Dana White sometime in 2020.

Since Mayweather’s announcement, fans have begun to get excited to see what this latest emergence from Mayweather will bring.

Male Birth Control Injection On The Way

“The product can safely be called the world’s first male contraceptive.”

Contributed by Rebecca Johnson

Injectable birth male birth control for men is on its way to being available in India.

Reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance, or RISUG. According to the Hindustan Times, the contraceptive is effective for 13 years and is purposed to be a replacement for a surgical vasectomy. The contraceptive has completed a clinical trial and could be available in the coming months.

“The product is ready, with only regulatory approvals pending with the Drugs Controller. The trials are over, including extended, phase 3 clinical trials for which 303 candidates were recruited with 97.3% success rate and no reported side-effects. The product can safely be called the world’s first male contraceptive,” said Dr RS Sharma, senior scientist with ICMR, who has been spearheading the trials.

Under anaesthesia, a polymer is injected in the sperm-containing tube near the testicles. This option is less risky than a vasectomy according to doctors.

“Non-surgical procedures are always preferred over surgical procedures because they will be safer and less invasive. More men are likely to opt for it,” said Dr Anup Kumar, head of urology and renal transplant department, Safdarjung Hospital in India.

Researchers in the US are developing another contraceptive for males, similar to this one that comes in gel form, according to the Parsemus Foundation.

Was Racial Slur Used During Browns/Steelers Melee?

Steelers QB Rudolph denies report he used racial slur

PITTSBURGH (AP) Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph is
denying he used a racial slur before his confrontation with
suspended Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett.

ESPN, using anonymous sources, reported Thursday that Garrett told
the NFL that Rudolph used a slur just before a brawl between the
two teams last week that included Garrett ripping off Rudolph’s
helmet and then hitting the quarterback in the head with it. The
NFL suspended Garrett indefinitely. He appealed the decision on
Wednesday. The matter remains under review.

Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten said Rudolph ”vehemently denies”
the report. Rudolph, who has not yet been disciplined for his role
in the fight, said on Wednesday that there was ”no acceptable
excuse” for his behavior during the fight.

Cleveland coach Freddie Kitchens said he supports Garrett ”in
every way possible” but did not comment when asked if Garrett told
Kitchens about the slur in the aftermath of the fight.

Guilty Pleas From Former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh

Former Baltimore mayor enters guilty pleas in fraud case

BALTIMORE (AP) — The disgraced former mayor of Baltimore pleaded guilty Thursday to federal conspiracy and tax evasion charges in a case involving sales of her self-published children’s books.
Catherine Pugh pleaded guilty in federal court in Baltimore to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the government and tax evasion. But she pleaded not guilty to wire fraud. The pleas came a day after an 11-count indictment was unsealed.
The case involves sales of her self-published “Healthy Holly” books to non-profits and foundations to promote her political career and fund her run for mayor. Pugh, a Democrat who was elected in 2016, resigned under pressure in May.
A federal grand jury indictment returned on Nov. 14 also charged two Pugh associates, Gary Brown, Jr., and Roslyn Wedington, who have pleaded guilty to conspiracy and tax fraud.
Pugh became Baltimore’s second mayor in less than a decade to step down because of scandal. Former Mayor Sheila Dixon left office in 2010 as part of a plea deal for misappropriating about $500 in gift cards meant for needy families.
The charges against Pugh came as the city has struggled violent crime and other cases of public corruption, as well as a major police scandal. The city has had more than 300 homicides for five years in a row.

Food2Feed 2019 Raises Thousands For Needy Families

“We are grateful to our listeners and sponsors and humbled by their generosity,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater. We collected tons of non-perishable food items and monetary donations that will make a difference for thousands of families across the DMV.

Washington, D.C. – (Wednesday, November 20, 2019) – They phoned in, met us at designated stops across the Washington region, and went on line to make donations.  The end result was thousands of dollars raised this year for the “96.3 WHUR Food2Feed Rolling Food Drive.”  The flagship radio station of the Howard University radio network hosted its annual Thanksgiving food drive Tuesday, November 19th from 6am to 6pm from the studios of WHUR at 529 Bryant Street, NW.  But the station also hit the streets of the DMV making stops at the Wilson building in NW, DC, Alexandria City Hall in Virginia, and the Wayne Curry Administration Building in Maryland.

This year’s “Food2Feed” collected enough money and non-perishable food to be able to provide meals to over 66-thousand persons in the Washington area. The Capital Area Food Bank, Shabach Ministries and Alive Food Center are the organizations who are the benefactors of the 12-hour Food2Feed radiothon. The non-profit agencies work daily to fight under in the region by identifying those persons who are food insecure.

“We are grateful to our listeners and sponsors and humbled by their generosity,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater. We collected tons of non-perishable food items and monetary donations that will make a difference for thousands of families across the DMV.

“I came to give because I see everyday people living on the streets and it just breaks my heart.  I can’t imagine their stories, but I can make sure I help them in this small way.  That’s why I give every year to Food2Feed,” said WHUR Listener Michelle Thomas.

The reasons for giving varied from person to person.  But most agreed that hearing statistics like hunger impacts 1 in 10 persons in the DMV are alarming.  WHUR has been hosting its holiday food drive for 42 years.  It truly is a labor of love.

Food2Feed is part of WHUR’s overall “Season of Giving Campaign” in which the station provides new winter gear for youth in October and toys and gifts for youngsters in December. Additionally, the radio station will partner with Steve Harvey and Shabach Ministries to disseminate 100 turkeys and bags of food to needy families Monday, November 25th. “Serving our local community is what radio is all about,” added Plater.
