GOP House Members Storm Secure Depositions

Some House Republicans Try To Storm Into Impeachment Deposition

(Washington, DC) — Frustrations are growing among House Republicans about the impeachment inquiry. A large group of Republicans tried to storm into the secure room where depositions are being heard, loudly complaining that Democrats are leading a secretive impeachment investigation. Only members of three House committees that are conducting the inquiry are allowed to take part in the depositions. Public hearings are expected to start once the private depositions are completed.

Prince George’s County Pit Bull Ban

Pit Bull Ban Remains In Place

(Upper Marlboro, MD) — A pit bull dog ban will remain in effect in Prince George’s County. The County Council rejected an attempt to repeal the more than 20-year-old ban. Animal activists argued that pit bulls are no more dangerous than other dog breeds while supporters of the measure countered with pit bulls are one of the more dangerous dog breeds. Prince George’s County euthanized more than 400 pit bulls last year and more than 250 so far this year.

Hate Crimes Up In DC, While Hate Crime Charges Are Down

If you didn’t know the District is the only place in the nation where local crimes are prosecuted by the U.S. attorney’s office. Their leaders are selected by the President. Advocates say the setup makes it hard to really hold anyone prosecutor accountable.

The District of Columbia is on pace to post a record number of hate crimes for 2019. So far this year 164 bias cases have been reported. In 2018, the total number was 204. Its a 14% increase.

Surprisingly, a story by the “Washington Post” on August 21 showed a decline in the number of hate crimes that result in criminal charges by the U.S. attorney’s office. Today the DC City Council on Judiciary and Public Safety will further discuss the issue.

If you didn’t know the District is the only place in the nation where local crimes are prosecuted by the U.S. attorney’s office. Their leaders are selected by the President. Advocates say the setup makes it hard to really hold anyone prosecutor accountable.

Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton has demanded information on the numbers from Jessie Liu, The U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. The “Washington Post” conducted a month’s long study of more than 200,000 District police and court records and found the number of hate crime cases that went to court to be the lowest in a decade.

Earlier this week legislation was introduced that would allow the District’s attorney general to bring civil charges against anyone involved in bias-motivated violence.

Trump Calls Impeachment Inquiry A Lynching

Trump likens House impeachment inquiry to ‘a lynching’

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump triggered outrage Tuesday by comparing the Democrat-led impeachment inquiry to a lynching, assigning the horrors of a deadly and racist chapter in U.S. history to a process laid out in the Constitution.
“That is one word no president ought to apply to himself,” said Democratic Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, the highest-ranking African American in Congress. “That is a word that we ought to be very, very careful about using.”

Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., who is also black, called on Trump to delete the tweet.
“Do you know how many people who look like me have been lynched, since the inception of this country, by people who look like you. Delete this tweet,” Rush wrote.
Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., tweeted to Trump: “No sir! No, @realDonaldTrump: this is NOT a lynching, and shame on you for invoking such a horrific act that was used as a weapon to terrorize and murder African Americans.”
Republican legislators largely tried to put the focus on what they said was the unfair way in which Democrats are conducting the inquiry.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Trump’s description was “pretty well accurate.” He called the impeachment effort a “sham” and a “joke” because the president does not know the identity of his accuser, and the process is playing out in private.
“This is a lynching in every sense,” said Graham, who is close to Trump.
Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, the Senate’s only black Republican, agreed with Trump’s sentiment but not his word choice.

“There’s no question that the impeachment process is the closest thing (to) a political death row trial, so I get his absolute rejection of the process,” Scott said. He added, “I wouldn’t use the word lynching.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who is also close to Trump, also said “lynching” isn’t “the language that I would use.”
Defending Trump, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said the president was trying to point out the way he has been “attacked” by the news media since before he took office. Trump’s tweet mentions Republicans and Democrats only, not the news media.
“The president’s not comparing what’s happened to him with one of our darkest moments in American history,” Gidley said.
Lynchings, typically hangings, were used mostly by whites against black men, mostly in the South, beginning in the late 19th century amid rising racial tensions. By comparing his possible impeachment to a lynching, Trump also likened Democrats to a mob intent on lynching someone.
Under pressure over impeachment, blowback over his Syria policy and other issues, the Republican president tweeted Tuesday: “So some day, if a Democrat becomes President and the Republicans win the House, even by a tiny margin, they can impeach the President, without due process or fairness or any legal rights.”
“All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here — a lynching. But we will WIN!”
Malinda Edwards, whose father was lynched by Ku Klux Klansmen in Alabama in 1957, said Trump’s tweet was “unbelievable.”
“Either he’s very ignorant or very insensitive or very racist and just doesn’t care, said Edwards, 66, of Dayton, Ohio. Her father, Willie Edwards Jr., was forced to jump of a river bridge by Klansmen who heard that he had smiled at a white woman. Edwards’ name is now among those on a memorial in Montgomery honoring more than 4,000 lynching victims. His daughter said Trump’s comment made light of the horror experienced by victims of racially motivated killings.
“These are people who went through the most gruesome and heinous things that could be done to them,” Edwards said.
The Congressional Black Caucus encouraged Trump to visit the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, also known as the “Lynching Museum,” to learn more about the history of lynching.
Trump often tries to portray himself as the victim, and the tweet came a day after he lashed out at critics of his decision — since rescinded — to schedule a major international economic summit for 2020 at one of his Florida golf properties. He also lamented people who invoke the “phony emoluments clause.”
The emoluments clause is in the Constitution and bans presidents from receiving gifts or payments from foreign governments, without the consent of Congress. Impeachment and its process are also in the Constitution.
A whistleblower’s complaint that Trump was attempting to use his office for personal political gain during a July 25 phone conversation with Ukraine’s president led House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to open the impeachment inquiry.
Trump insists he did nothing wrong. He has characterized the conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as “perfect” and argues that sore-loser Democrats are still trying to overturn the 2016 election that put him in the White House and keep him from winning reelection next year.
Lynchings were fueled by anger toward blacks across the South, where many whites blamed their financial problems on newly freed slaves living around them, the NAACP notes.
Separately Tuesday, a U.S. appeals court in Atlanta was considering whether federal judges can order grand jury records unsealed in the mob lynching of two black couples . The young black sharecroppers were stopped along a rural road in 1946 by a white mob that dragged them out and shot them multiple times east of Atlanta. More than 100 people reportedly testified before a grand jury, but no one was ever indicted in the deaths of Roger and Dorothy Malcom and George and Mae Murray Dorsey.

Meghan Markle Admits She’s Struggling With Being A New Mom Too

Contributed by Amber Cooper

Meghan Markle opened up to ITV News at Ten anchor, Tom Bradby and was completely honest about her present journey in motherhood.

As a royal, she has faced major scrutiny from the public. Not all can relate to being a member of the royal family, but many women can relate to Markle’s sentiments on motherhood. In an exclusive Instagram clip from ITV News, Markle says, “Any woman especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable and so that was made really challenging. And then when you have a newborn, you know?”

Markle continues the interview telling Bradby, “Thank you for asking because not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.” Many mothers struggle with postpartum depression. People are always checking up on the baby, but who’s checking up on the mothers?

British tabloids have not made the journey any easier. Earlier this month, Prince Harry released a statement saying, “My wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences.” As a new royal, wife and mom, Markle has been subjected to endless bullying by the press.

Harry and Meghan: An African Journey airs this Wednesday on ABC, where they will continue to give exclusive statements of their journey.

Lizzo Accused of Plagiarism Over Hit Songs

Rising star Lizzo is under fire for allegedly plagiarism her hit songs “Juice” and “Truth Hurts” from multiple sources.

Contributed by Jordyn Fields

Rising star Lizzo is currently begin accused of plagiarism her Billboard Top 100 songs “Juice” and “Truth Hurts.”

Cece Peniston posted on Instagram accusing Lizzo of taking ad-libs from her song “Finally.” The artist posted a side by side video of the two songs, captioning it “this is a clear example of #copyrightinfringement Cece Peniston versus @lizzobeating y’all check this out and btw I love her music.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3ulc-xhKyv/

However, Peniston isn’t the first person to accuse Lizzo of plagiarism. Producer, Justin Raisen accused the artist of using his lyrics without permission. He claims the line “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 percent that bitch.” was written with himself, Lizzo, Jesse Saint John and Yves Rothman for a song called “Healthy.” Lyrics and melody from that song allegedly appear in “Truth Hurts.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3oRS_0liE_/

In February of 2018, Lizzo was also accused by Mia Lioness, a british singer who says she originally wrote the line in “Truth Hurts.” She class she tweeted the line years prior, however Lizzo states she never saw it.

Lizzo’s attorney released this statement to Billboard about the claims, “The Raisens are not writers of ‘Truth Hurts,'” said Cynthia Arato, of Shapiro Arato Bach. “They did not collaborate with Lizzo or anyone else to create this song, and they did not help write any of the material that they now seek to profit from, which is why they expressly renounced any claim to the work, in writing, months ago. Although it has become all too commonplace for successful artists to be subjected to these type of opportunistic claims, it is nevertheless disappointing that after all of her hard work, Lizzo has to respond to this specious claim.”

Lizzo has recently been on the rise, performing at the BET Awards and MTV VMA’s this year. She was also nominated for a BET Award for Best Female Hip Hop Artist and an VMA Award for Best New Artist. Her song, “Truth Hurts” peaked at number one for six weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Barnes spoke to reporters about his decision, stating, “It’s about the family. It’s about everything they’re going through. Our prayers obviously are with them. It was a gesture my wife and I wanted to do for them.”

According to a lawyer for Jefferson’s family, The Barnes’ family are covering more than half of the funeral service expenses. The rest is being covered by Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle, Malik Jackson.

Barnes told ESPN he has not spoken to Jefferson’s family as they were “just giving them space respectfully.”

Atatiana Jefferson’s funeral is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at Potter’s House of Dallas.

Suicide Attempts At A High For Black Teens, Study Says

A recent study found that Black teens were attempting suicide more than ever before, while other ethnic groups have since decreased in suicide attempts.

Contributed by Nadira Jamerson

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for teens aged 12-18.

However, Since 1991, for all other ethnic groups, suicide rates among teens has been on a decline. Yet, for Black teens, the number has risen with an increase of 73% in suicide attempts between 1991-2017.

The new study analyzed data from 198,540 high school students collected by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey. They found that almost one in five high school students had thoughts about suicide. About one in 10 had a suicide plan. Researchers wanted to see if certain racial subgroups of adolescents are more likely to engage in suicidal behaviors over time.

Previous research has pointed to disparities in mental health treatment for black adolescents compared with white adolescents. Some are reluctant to seek help or acknowledge mental illness symptoms, while others are skeptical of mental health treatment. But research has shown that the social issues black adolescents face, such as racial discrimination and poverty, have been linked to suicidal behaviors.

Jaynay Johnson, a family therapist who works with black teens in the Philadelphia area, said she wasn’t surprised by the results of this study. Johnson said that black teens don’t have a lot of outlets to just “let their emotions be,” so living with mental illness can become very taxing.

Especially for Black teens, Johnson explained that childhood can be a traumatizing time. Black children get more exposure to violence and racism that happens in their communities, which plays big role in their mental health. Trauma from shootings in their families, communities, and even of black people they don’t know can cause stress, anxiety, and depression.
In order to help our Black youth, Johnson said “We need to continue to diminish [stigma] so that we can build programs tailored for youth. In other communities, they’ve accepted mental health. They’re the ones writing the books. For us, we are behind the ball with that.”

27-Year-Old Boxer Patrick Day Dies Days After Match

Conwell took to social media with a letter addressed to Day. “I never meant for this to happen to you. All I ever wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back I would no one deserved for this to happen to them.” he wrote.

27-year-old junior middleweight, Patrick Day, died Wednesday after suffering brain injuries during a match in Chicago.

Day received a brutal knockout and loss Monday night from heavyweight Charles Conwell. Connell who is undefeated and a 2016 U.S. Olympian knocked Day down in the fourth and eighth rounds. Conwell caught Day with a left hook that caused the back of his head to hit the canvas during the final round.

Day was rendered unconscious and referees stopped the match and requested medical assistance for the boxer. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he suffered a seizure and fell into a coma before emergency brain surgery. He never regained consciousness.

On Wednesday Day was disconnected from life support.

“He was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team, including his mentor, friend and trainer Joe Higgins,” promoter Lou DiBella said on his website.

Conwell took to social media with a letter addressed to Day. “I never meant for this to happen to you. All I ever wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back I would no one deserved for this to happen to them.” he wrote.

During his amateur career, Day won two national titles, was a U.S. Olympic team alternate and won the New York Golden Gloves Tournament. Day had a career record of 17-4-1 with six knockouts.

My First Disney Dream Cruise Experience

Whoever created the Disney Dream thought of everything. It was like a floating city.
Everything you wanted was right there!

https://youtu.be/2emN-Wr0Znw

For starters, this was my first cruise ever and it was amazing!

I’m a world traveler. I’ve been to Senegal Africa, Brazil, London, Amsterdam and course several spots in the Caribbean all on land so this Disney Dream Bahamas trip was something totally new for me.

I probably had more fun than the kids!

A post shared by EZ Street (@ezstreet)

As soon as you board the Disney Dream they have a team of greeters waiting and they actually announce you by name on to the ship as if you were part of the starting line up of a NBA basketball team.

Remember this is my first time on a cruise. I get to my stateroom and the room and it’s gorgeous. I even have my very own little beautiful balcony view.

I hear a knock at the door. It’s Whur Promotions Director Darlene Jackson and she’s smiling. She says “do you know how to cut on the electricity in your room?”

Me: huh??

“You gotta use your magic key ez”! Darlene has done several Disney cruises before and was very helpful in teaching me the ins and outs of the ship.

The Disney Dream has several amazing nightclubs, a movie theater, a stage play theater where I met the cast of Beauty and the Beast.

I spent a lot of time in the health and wellness spa called Senses where you could pedicures, facials, haircuts and more.

I had several great workouts in their gym. I had to because the restaurants aboard  the DISNEY DREAM where ridiculous!

I honestly had to govern myself accordingly. Fine cuisine is a understatement and the customer service was probably the BEST I’ve seen ever.

Every employee spoke to you will a smile and were very helpful if you needed anything.

Probably my favorite part of the trip was the trip to the private island called Castaway Cay!

I’ve been to a lot of nice beaches but this beach here was something special. Very clean and well kept.

And the water was so clear and beautiful. It was like a postcard! Gorgeous.

Whoever created the Disney Dream thought of everything. It was like a floating city.

Everything you wanted was right there!

Congratulations to Rachelle Goldson! She entered her family in our contest to win a Disney Family Cruise Vacation and she was selected as our GRAND PRIZE WINNER! She too will be able to experience THE DISNEY EXPERIENCE with her family.

Support Growing For Congress And Impeaching President Trump

The same Gallup poll showed from Oct. 1 – 13th that President’s approval rate is remaining at 39%. That’s down from 40% in late September.

A new Gallup poll shows approval is not only up for members of Congress but also for impeaching and removing President Trump.

The survey found an increase from 18% last month of Congress to 25% this month. It also showed 52% of Americans now agree with the impeachment and removal of President Donald Trump. The increase according to the study is due to an increase among Independents and Democrats. The outcomes were collected before Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced the impeachment inquiry.

The same Gallup poll showed from Oct. 1 – 13th that President’s approval rate is remaining at 39%. That’s down from 40% in late September. 87% of Republicans approve of him, 34% of independents approve and only 5% of Democrats support what he is doing in office.

Rep. Elijah Cummings Has Died

“I was devastated,” Cummings told The Associated Press in 1996, shortly before he won his seat in Congress. “My whole life changed. I became very determined.”

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Rep. Elijah E. Cummings died early Thursday at Johns Hopkins Hospital due to complications from longstanding health challenges, his congressional office said. He was 68.

A sharecropper’s son, Cummings became the powerful chairman of a U.S. House committee that investigated President Donald Trump, and was a formidable orator who passionately advocated for the poor in his black-majority district, which encompasses a large portion of Baltimore as well as more well-to-do suburbs.

As chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Cummings led multiple investigations of the president’s governmental dealings, including probes in 2019 relating to the president’s family members serving in the White House.

Trump responded by criticizing the Democrat’s district as a “rodent-infested mess” where “no human being would want to live.” The comments came weeks after Trump drew bipartisan condemnation following his calls for Democratic congresswomen of color to get out of the U.S. “right now,” and go back to their “broken and crime-infested countries.”

Cummings replied that government officials must stop making “hateful, incendiary comments” that only serve to divide and distract the nation from its real problems, including mass shootings and white supremacy.

“Those in the highest levels of the government must stop invoking fear, using racist language and encouraging reprehensible behavior,” Cummings said in a speech at the National Press Club.

Cummings’ long career spanned decades in Maryland politics. He rose through the ranks of the Maryland House of Delegates before winning his congressional seat in a special election in 1996 to replace former Rep. Kweisi Mfume, who left the seat to lead the NAACP.

Cummings was an early supporter of Barack Obama’s presidential bid in 2008. And by 2016, Cummings was the senior Democrat on the House Benghazi Committee, which he said was “nothing more than a taxpayer-funded effort to bring harm to Hillary Clinton’s campaign” for president.

Throughout his career, Cummings used his fiery voice to highlight the struggles and needs of inner-city residents. He was a firm believer in some much-debated approaches to help the poor and addicted, such as needle exchange programs as a way to reduce the spread of AIDS.

A key figure in the Trump impeachment inquiry, Cummings had been hoping to return to Congress after a medical procedure he said would only keep him away for a week. His statement then didn’t detail the procedure. He had previously been treated for heart and knee issues.

His constituents began mourning shortly after his death at 2:45 a.m. on Thursday. The Baltimore archdiocese tweeted that Cummings “generously shared his God-given gifts and talents w/the people of his beloved city, state and nation for so many years. We give thanks for his dedicated service and pray for the repose of his soul.”

Cummings was born on Jan. 18, 1951. In grade school, a counselor told Cummings he was too slow to learn and spoke poorly, and he would never fulfill his dream of becoming a lawyer.

“I was devastated,” Cummings told The Associated Press in 1996, shortly before he won his seat in Congress. “My whole life changed. I became very determined.”

It steeled Cummings to prove that counselor wrong. He became not only a lawyer, but one of the most powerful orators in the statehouse, where he entered office in 1983. He rose to become the first black House speaker pro tem. He would begin his comments slowly, developing his theme and raising the emotional heat until it became like a sermon from the pulpit.

Cummings was quick to note the differences between Congress and the Maryland General Assembly, which has long been controlled by Democrats.

“After coming from the state where, basically, you had a lot of people working together, it’s clear that the lines are drawn here,” Cummings said about a month after entering office in Washington in 1996.

Cummings chaired the Congressional Black Caucus from 2003 to 2004, employing a hard-charging, explore-every-option style to put the group in the national spotlight.

He cruised to big victories in the overwhelmingly Democratic district, which had given Maryland its first black congressman in 1970 when Parren Mitchell was elected.

Billionaire Oprah Winfrey announced her plan to donate $13 million to a scholarship endowment in her name at Morehouse College. In 1989, she donated $12 million and decided to add on to that.

“Oprah Winfrey’s history of giving in support of Morehouse students began in 1989 with a $1 million contribution made during commencement exercises that established the Oprah Winfrey Endowed Scholarships Fund,” according to the college’s website.

In a surprise announcement at the college, she said  “I was really surprised to learn that it’s been 30 years since I made that $12 million donation to Morehouse, so today, I’d like to add $13 million to that.”

When she made the announcement, she was meeting with 47 students that currently benefit from her endowment. Almost 600 students have benefited from the endowment since its beginning.

Recently, Winfrey announced at a United Negro College Fund Luncheon that she will donate $1 million dollars to the organization.

At commencement in May, billionaire Robert Smith announced that he will pay off of student loan debts for 2019 graduates as well as the debts of their families.

Last weekend, she was at the opening of her friend Tyler Perry‘s new studio where she christened a soundstage named after her.
