Entertainment Pioneer Diahann Carroll Has Died

Diahann Carroll, Oscar-nominated, pioneering actress, dies

NEW YORK (AP) — Diahann Carroll, the Oscar-nominated actress and singer who won critical acclaim as the first black woman to star in a non-servant role in a TV series as “Julia,” has died. She was 84.
Carroll’s daughter, Susan Kay, told The Associated Press her mother died Friday in Los Angeles of cancer.

During her long career, Carroll earned a Tony Award for the musical “No Strings” and an Academy Award nomination for best actress for “Claudine.”
But she was perhaps best known for her pioneering work on “Julia.” Carroll played Julia Baker, a nurse whose husband had been killed in Vietnam, in the groundbreaking situation comedy that aired from 1968 to 1971.
“Diahann Carroll walked this earth for 84 years and broke ground with every footstep. An icon. One of the all-time greats,” director Ava DuVernay wrote on Twitter. “She blazed trails through dense forests and elegantly left diamonds along the path for the rest of us to follow. Extraordinary life. Thank you, Ms. Carroll.”
Although she was not the first black woman to star in her own TV show (Ethel Waters played a maid in the 1950s series “Beulah”), she was the first to star as someone other than a servant.
NBC executives were wary about putting “Julia” on the network during the racial unrest of the 1960s, but it was an immediate hit.
It had its critics, though, including some who said Carroll’s character, who is the mother of a young son, was not a realistic portrayal of a black American woman in the 1960s.
“They said it was a fantasy,” Carroll recalled in 1998. “All of this was untrue. Much about the character of Julia I took from my own life, my family.”
Not shy when it came to confronting racial barriers, Carroll won her Tony portraying a high-fashion American model in Paris who has a love affair with a white American author in the 1959 Richard Rodgers musical “No Strings.” Critic Walter Kerr described her as “a girl with a sweet smile, brilliant dark eyes and a profile regal enough to belong on a coin.”
She appeared often in plays previously considered exclusive territory for white actresses: “Same Time, Next Year,” ”Agnes of God” and “Sunset Boulevard” (as faded star Norma Desmond, the role played by Gloria Swanson in the 1950 film.)
“I like to think that I opened doors for other women, although that wasn’t my original intention,” she said in 2002.
Her film career was sporadic. She began with a secondary role in “Carmen Jones” in 1954 and five years later appeared in “Porgy and Bess,” although her singing voice was dubbed because it wasn’t considered strong enough for the Gershwin opera. Her other films included “Goodbye Again,” ”Hurry Sundown,” ”Paris Blues,” and “The Split.”
The 1974 film “Claudine” provided her most memorable role. She played a hard-bitten single mother of six who finds romance in Harlem with a garbage man played by James Earl Jones.
In the 1980s, she joined in the long-running prime-time soap opera “Dynasty” as Dominique Deveraux, the glamorous half-sister of Blake Carrington; her physical battles with Alexis Carrington, played by Joan Collins, were among fan highlights. More recently, she had a number of guest shots and small roles in TV series, including playing the mother of Isaiah Washington’s character, Dr. Preston Burke, on “Grey’s Anatomy” and a stretch on the TV show “White Collar” as the widow June.
She also returned to her roots in nightclubs. In 2006, she made her first club appearance in New York in four decades, singing at Feinstein’s at the Regency. Reviewing a return engagement in 2007, a New York Times critic wrote that she sang “Both Sides Now” with “the reflective tone of a woman who has survived many severe storms and remembers every lightning flash and thunderclap.”
Carol Diann Johnson was born in New York City and attended the High School for the Performing Arts. Her father was a subway conductor and her mother a homemaker.
She began her career as a model, but a prize from “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” TV show led to nightclub engagements.
In her 1998 memoir “Diahann,” Carroll traced her turbulent romantic life, which included liaisons with Harry Belafonte, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Sammy Davis Jr., Sidney Poitier and David Frost. She even became engaged to Frost, but the engagement was canceled.
An early marriage to nightclub owner Monte Kay resulted in Carroll’s only child, Suzanne, as well as a divorce. She also divorced her second husband, retail executive Freddie Glusman, later marrying magazine editor Robert DeLeon, who died.
Her most celebrated marriage was in 1987, to singer Vic Damone, and the two appeared together in nightclubs. But they separated in 1991 and divorced several years later.
After she was treated for breast cancer in 1998, she spoke out for more money for research and for free screening for women who couldn’t afford mammograms.
“We all look forward to the day that mastectomies, chemotherapy and radiation are considered barbaric,” Carroll told a gathering in 2000.
Besides her daughter, she is survived by grandchildren August and Sydney.

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay is continuing to push for diversity and inclusivity in the film world with her new series ARRAY 360.

The “When They See Us” director will be showcasing films that were created by or feature women of color. Earlier this year, DuVernay opened the “Amanda Theater,” named after her late aunt, Denise Amanda Sexton, at her ARRAY campus in Historic Filipinotown, L.A. The theater itself is also a work of art.

“Look, we’re black ladies. This is our screening room. We want hot pink chairs? We’re going to have them.” DuVernay told the L.A. Times.

The 50 seat auditorium will spend the fall (September 27- November 2) on the ARRAY 360 program that is set to become an annual event.

“In addition to paying tribute to exquisite filmmakers, some of whose work has gone under-appreciated, our ARRAY 360 series strives to connect with audiences that don’t always see themselves reflected on screen,” Series curator Mercedes Cooper told Deadline.

Each weekend will have it’s own program theme: Filipinx Film Fiesta, Centerpiece, Reclaiming Narratives, The Broad at Array, John Singleton Retrospective, Diop Dynasty, and Visionary Varda. Some weekends also will also have the directors present for discussion.

All tickets are free to the public with advanced registration.

Mathew Knowles Diagnosed With Breast Cancer

Knowles said, “The first calls I made were to my kids, and my former wife, Tina. My wife, Gena, already knew; she went with me to the exam.”

Mathew Knowles, the father of singers Beyonce and Solange, took to Good Morning America to reveal his breast cancer diagnosis.

Knowles sat down with Michael Strahan, co-anchor on “Good Morning America,” on Wednesday morning to discuss his diagnosis. He began to notice dots of blood staining his white shirts over a period of time. After brushing it off the first couple days, he realized it was time to go see a doctor. According to “Good Morning America,” Knowles received a smear that was nonconclusive and then decided to get a mammogram that revealed his cancer.

Knowles said, “The first calls I made were to my kids, and my former wife, Tina. My wife, Gena, already knew; she went with me to the exam.”

Knowles has a history of breast cancer running in his family, so it was vital to make his loved ones aware. During the interview, he mentions that his mother’s sister died of breast cancer and his mother sister’s two daughters also died of breast cancer. Unfortunately, he has been surrounded around this disease all of his life and know that his children have a high chance of being affected.

October is officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Knowles is specifically urging black men to get tested. The key for Knowles is “early detection.” According to cancer.org, there will be about 2,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer for men in the United States in 2019.

Knowles is now focused on leading a healthier lifestyle and doing all that he can to spread awareness.

R&B artist Summer Walker has only been on the scene for a few years, but she is already making a name for herself.

Summer Walker is a 23-year old singer from Atlanta, GA. Her soulful yet hip sound is heavily influenced by this upbringing, as well as her close proximity to southern artists. Her debut album, ‘Last Day Of Summer’, was released just about a year ago, which started her fandom and continued success.

Her latest album, ‘Over It’, released earlier today at midnight. Willow And Jaden Smith Grace Cover Of Vogue Italia

Jaden and Willow Smith were featured on the latest cover of Vogue Italia to highlight how their activism has been making progressive changes throughout the U.S.

Contributed by Nadira Jamerson

Willow Smith and Jaden Smith were featured on the latest cover of Vogue Italia. Their interviews included with the shoot focused on how the siblings are working to use their fame and social influence to better the world community. Jaden Smith spoke about how the siblings are specifically working to provide clean water to Flint, MI through JUST water and their 501CTHREE community organization.

During their interview with Vogue Italia Willow Smith said, “There’s no point to having all of these resources and all of these eyes on you if you are not expressing and addressing the real problems in our world. For me, I feel like the emotionality of humans and how we relate to one another is so important. In the face of racism and sexism, we have to learn to sufficiently stand up for ourselves. And it’s on our generation to make sure that we have a sustainable planet and we are making the correct steps to survive and reverse the damage that has already been done. I constantly think about this, and my coping mechanism is to find more ways to help more creativity and more community in order to prevail. Life is precious and short and both of us want to do whatever we can do to help. The gratitude I feel is for the chance we’ve been given to participate and that’s just as much down to the goodness of the people who are listening as to the platform we’ve been given.”

Jaden Smith explained, “I feel that we just try to set a good example, as much as it is possible, to the generation of young people who are looking at what we are doing. That’s represented in JUST and 501CTHREE, which embody our commitment to creating awareness around the challenges humans face in terms of sustainable energy, water and food – now and in the future. One of the first projects of 501CTHREE is to install water filtration systems for communities in Flint, MI and Los Angeles, here in California. Or the two pilot programs of food trucks for the Skid Row community in L.A. that are giving out 500 meals a day. We are trying to do things in a way that educates people who are looking to us about what’s going on in the world. And it’s what Willow does with our mom and grandmother with Red Table Talk – facing and addressing sexism and racism.”

In an Instagram post following the story, Willow called Jaden her “Partner in Justice.”

Extraordinary act of mercy: Brother of Botham Jean hugs and forgives Amber Guyger after 10-year sentence imposed

https://abcnews.go.com/US/jury-deciding-sentence-police-officer-amber-guyger-wrong/story?id=66002182

The sentence appeared to initially disappoint the family of the victim, Botham Jean, who had hoped for far harsher punishment for Guyger. Several members of the family broke down in tears, shaking their heads as if in disbelief of the jury’s decision.

But Jean’s 18-year-old brother, Brandt Jean, took the witness stand and spoke to Guyger, saying, “I know if you go to God and ask him, he will forgive you.”

“I love you just like anyone else and I’m not going to hope you rot and die,” Brandt Jean told Guyger. “I personally want the best for you. I wasn’t going to say this in front of my family, I don’t even want you to go to jail. I want the best for you because I know that’s exactly what Botham would want for you. Give your life to Christ. I think giving your life to Christ is the best thing Botham would want for you.”

Brandt Jean then asked Kemp if he could give Guyger a hug, a request the judge granted.

He stepped off the witness stand and met Guyger in front of the judge’s bench and embraced as Guyger broke into tears.

Democratic Chairmen Respond To Pompeo’s Letter

(Washington, DC) — The chairmen of three House committees are recommending Secretary of State Mike Pompeo [[ pom-PAY-oh ]] immediately stop intimidating witnesses in his department in order to protect himself and President Trump. Congressmen Eliot Engel of New York, Adam Schiff of California and Elijah Cummings of Maryland issued a joint statement to respond to Pompeo’s letter earlier today claiming Congress was bullying his employees. Their three committees are investigating Trump’s attempt to urge Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his family. Their statement says since Pompeo was listening during the phone call with Ukraine’s president, he is a witness. They warn any effort to prevent State Department witnesses from talking with Congress is illegal and will be evidence of obstruction of the impeachment inquiry.

Opera Phenom Jessye Norman Dies

Jessye Norman, the international opera star, dead at 74

NEW YORK (AP) — Jessye Norman, the renowned international opera star whose passionate soprano voice won her four Grammy Awards and the National Medal of Arts, has died, according to family spokesperson Gwendolyn Quinn. She was 74.

A statement released to The Associated Press on Monday said Norman died at 7:54 a.m. EDT from septic shock and multi-organ failure secondary to complications of a spinal cord injury she had sustained in 2015. She died at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital in New York, and was surrounded by loved ones.
Norman was reared in a musical family. Both her mother and grandmother were pianists and her father sang in church, as did the young Jessye. She won a scholarship to Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she studied voice. She graduated in 1967 and received further training at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, and at the University of Michigan.

Norman also enjoyed success as a recitalist with her thorough scholarship and her ability to project drama through her voice. She toured throughout the 1970s, giving recitals of works by Franz Schubert, Gustav Mahler, Wagner, Johannes Brahms, Erik Satie, Olivier Messiaen, and several contemporary American composers. By the mid-1980s she was one of the most popular and highly regarded dramatic soprano singers in the world. She produced numerous award-winning recordings, and many of her performances were televised.

No. Virginia Student Lied About Dreadlocks Attack

Student Made Up Story About Bullies Cutting Her Dreadlocks

(Springfield, VA) — A sixth-grade girl who accused three classmates of pinning her down and cutting her dreadlocks is admitting she made up the story. The 12-year-old girl from Immanuel Christian School in Springfield, Virginia said last week three white classmates ambushed her on the playground and used scissors to cut off some of her dreadlocks. She said they told her her hair was “nappy,” and “ugly.” The story gained national attention, but now the school says the student acknowledged the assault was false. It happened at Bernard Awtrey Middle School. The story went public after students at the school took pictures of the note and showed it to their parents. Some of the parents immediately posted the letter to Facebook.

A spokesperson for the school system confirmed that the unidentified teacher had been terminated. They also confirmed that the teacher in question made two lists one entitled “angels” and the other “devils”. Officials say they do not tolerate anyone employed with them making comments that are disrespectfully in any way.

The Need For Black Student Athletes To Attend An HBCU

If you’re a huge fan of college sports, most of the players are African American attending predominantly white institutions. However, we have some talented student-athletes attending Historical Black College and Universities but the revenue is not increasing. Tonight, we discuss how can we encourage student-athletes to consider an HBCU. Other Universities are making millions off our young men and women. How should parents and coaches push the students to go another direction?

AUDIO:

Kelsey Nicole Nelson…Reporter with Fox Sports

Kerry Davis………Director of Athletics with Howard University

BACKGROUND

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/10/black-athletes-should-leave-white-colleges/596629/

The NCAA reported $1.1 billion in revenue for its 2017 fiscal year. Most of that money comes from the Division I men’s-basketball tournament. In 2016, the NCAA extended its television agreement with CBS Sports and Turner Broadcasting through 2032—an $8.8 billion deal. About 30 Division I schools each bring in at least $100 million in athletic revenue every year. Almost all of these schools are majority white—in fact, black men make up only 2.4 percent of the total undergraduate population of the 65 schools in the so-called Power Five athletic conferences. Yet black men make up 55 percent of the football players in those conferences, and 56 percent of basketball players.

Black athletes have attracted money and attention to the predominantly white universities that showcase them. Meanwhile, black colleges are struggling. Alabama’s athletic department generated $174 million in the 2016–17 school year, whereas the HBCU that generated the most money from athletics that year, Prairie View A&M, brought in less than $18 million. Beyond sports, the average HBCU endowment is only one-eighth that of the average predominantly white school; taken together, all of the HBCU endowments combined make up less than a tenth of Harvard’s.

Millennial Mortgage Debt High In DC

Millennials are on pace to have more mortgage debt than any other generation.
Nowhere in the U.S. is that more an issue than the District, with an average mortgage debt of near 451-thousand dollars — more than twice the national average, according to Experian.
Maryland ranked No. 8, with an average millennial mortgage debt of near 280-thousand. Virginia tenth at 270-thousand.
Experian notes that millennials with the largest average mortgage balance also have some of the best credit scores in the nation. District millenials are near the top with an average FICO score of 698.

Maryland’s HBCUs Seek Millions

The state of Maryland’s four HBCU’s seek close 600-million dollars in a settlement with the state. The state is offer 200-million in a final offer.

200 million. Maryland governor Larry Hogan says that is the state’S final offer to settle a case brought by lawyers for the four historically black colleges in the state.
The coalition of HBCUs – Morgan State, Coppin State, Bowie State and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore are asking for 577 million dollars “spread over a reasonable period of time.”  Their case was first filed in 2006, and alleges that the state has failed to dismantle vestiges of segregated higher education, including by under funding the four institutions and by allowing traditionally white state universities to continue creating new degree programs that were duplicates of programs at the historically black schools.  Lawyers for Maryland’s HBCU’s say they are willing to continue the court case if a settlement cannot be reached.

Legislation To Honor Alleged Hate Crime Victim

Maryland’s two U.S. senators introduce legislation to honor Richard Collins, who was killed while waiting for a bus on the campus of the University of Maryland.

Richard Collins III was stabbed to death on the campus of University of Maryland two years ago. Two days after being commissioned as a U.S. Army officer and days before he was to graduate Bowie State University.   Collins was not buried with military honors nor did he receive the posthumous benefits accorded a military veteran.
Now, in honor of Collins, Maryland’s two U.S. Senators have introduced legislation that would change that restriction.   The new legislation would afford death benefits, life insurance and other benefits to ROTC graduates who die before checking-in to a first command. Maryland representative Anthony Brown has introduced similar legislation in the House.
Collins was stabbed while waiting for an Uber with two friends at a College Park bus stop on May 20th of 2017.  Sean Urbanski will go on trial for first-degree murder in December.

‘RHOA’ Star Kandi Burruss Expecting Baby #3 Via Surrogate

Real Housewives of Atlanta star and business mogul, Kandi Burruss, announced on Bravo that they would be expecting their third child via a surrogate.

Contributed by Nadira Jamerson

Congratulations Kandi Burruss on Baby #3!

Bravo recently reported that Kandi would be welcoming her third child into the world via surrogate.

Earlier this year, this Real Housewives of Atlanta star discussed the possibility of having more children with her husband, Todd, but she was afraid of having to undergo another difficult pregnancy.

She said, “As soon as we had Ace, we knew that we would want to possibly use our other embryo’s, but I had a high-risk pregnancy last time, so that’s why we decided we would consider surrogacy. Todd and I are both nervous about it. I think it’s easier for Todd to handle or deal with because as a man he’s used to somebody else carrying the baby. But for me it’s a little bit harder to deal with the thought because I’m supposed to carry my own kids in my mind.”

However, during the RHOA Season 11 Reunion, Kandi officially announced that she and Todd would be using their remaining embryos to have another baby by surrogate.

RHOA fans are excited to see Kandi’s family expand in Season 12.

Rents are rising, and neighborhoods are changing. Renters mobilized to form a tenants union.

Tenant activism has trickled its way through the District in recent years, building by building. Renters have organized associations, implemented rent strikes and battled the threat of displacement. They have protested, signed petitions and contacted city leaders. But for decades, there has been no centralized effort to organize renters on District-wide issues such as single-family-home renters’ rights, gentrification and rent control. The new D.C. Tenants Union is vowing to change that.

Lead Found At 17 DC School Playgrounds

According to the District, no child has tested positive for elevated lead levels as a result of playing at school playgrounds.

There’s a new report out by the Department of General Services. It shows that elevated traces of lead have been found a 17 D.C. public school playgrounds. In fact, 6 had to be closed during the summer because of the levels.

An outside group was hired to check the parks. The move follows a push by a parent advocacy group who hired professionals to conduct a test at Janney Elementary School in Northwest where high levels were found.

General services say they spent the summer cleaning up the playgrounds to make them safe for the kids. According to the District, no child has tested positive for elevated lead levels as a result of playing at school playgrounds.

Tests of what’s called “Poured in Place” playgrounds with the rubber surface continues. Parents are advised to make sure that they have their children wash their hands after using school playgrounds.
