{WATCH} Meet The DMV Disney Dreamers Class Of 2024

Educational. Motivational. Sensational.

That’s just part of the magic of Disney Dreamers Academy at Walt Disney World Resort. For 17 years, this program has fostered the dreams of Black high school-age youth and teens from across the country.

Alyssa

I am 15 years old, currently residing in Afton, Virginia. I am a freshman at Western Albemarle High School. Going to school at Western helps me gain a passion for how the adolescent brain works. After finishing high school, I plan on attending a college that has psychology and childhood studies. I am passionate about writing, music, and jewelry making. My after college goal is to become a counselor and help kids in need. In my free time I love spending time with my foster family. For extra curriculars I play basketball, doing so helps me connect with peers.

Anah

I am 16yr old, currently living in Rockville, MD where I’m a junior at Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, MD. I became an award winning filmmaker at the age of 12yrs old and the youngest to receive the inaugural Rising Star award at the Cannes Film Festival by the way of Diversity in Cannes. I’m truly passionate about filmmaking and my goal/dream is to be a filmmaker who creates projects that are relatable to the younger generation such as social and global problems. When I’m not creating films, I enjoy mentoring, volunteering, and theatre.

Athena

I am 16 years old and a sophomore at Flint Hill Upper School in Oakton, VA. At my school, I participate in a range of extracurriculars which include: Model UN, robotics, and musical theater. By participating in these clubs I learn how to express myself through public speaking and learning how to work with others and solve problems. My biggest dream is to be a robotics engineer because I wish to bring a positive impact to my community by helping those in need and building a sustainable future. To achieve my dream I am in the robotics class at my school that teaches students CAD and 3D printing. I hope to take the certification exam so I can apply to engineering internships that can show me the world of innovation. When I’m not at school or in the robotics lab, I can be found crocheting stuffed animals, reading, playing piano and writing short stories.

Ella

I am a sixteen-year-old junior at Prince Edward County High School in Farmville, Virginia. I love to spend my time reading and writing because it gives me the opportunity to see the world in so many different ways. My dream is to work in politics so that my voice will be heard, and so that I can make our country a better, safer place where everyone feels represented in the government. I hope to study political science at Barnard College.

Jameson Booth

My name is Jameson Booth, 18, and I live in Chesapeake, Virginia where I am a senior at Grassfield High School. I’ve been involved in Art Club and as an anchor with the school broadcast news show “G News”, and National Honor Society. Outside of school I am a dedicated volunteer at The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore. My passions include drawing and writing but they extend to animation, video games, and reading. I love all types of art. In the fall of 2024 I plan on attending college to major in African American Studies with a minor in Visual Arts (Painting and Drawing). Being selected for this experience is truly an honor.
Julia Andrews

I am currently a sophomore at St. John’s College High School in Washington DC. My favorite subjects are art, chemistry and math. I also really enjoy drawing and building my sketching skills. Outside of school, I volunteer at the nursery at my church, hang out with my family and friends, and enjoy traveling to new places. When I graduate from high school, I plan to go to college and become an architect. My dream is to build sustainable permanent and transitional housing for low income families using environmentally friendly materials. All families deserve a home that is beautiful and eco friendly.

Beyoncé Has ‘The Best Sample Yet’ Of Her Classic Song, Artist Says

What do you think of Beyoncé’s album, “Cowboy Carter?” What’s your favorite song?

After her Cowboy Carter album release, Nancy Sinatra, Frank Sinatra’s eldest daughter, sent Beyoncé flowers.

Sinatra discussed being on Queen B’s current album on X/Twitter. This rendition of her 1966 hit “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'” may be her greatest.

“To have a little piece of one of my records in a @Beyonce song is very meaningful to me because I love her,” she wrote, referencing the Cowboy Carter track “Ya Ya.” “She represents what is great about today’s music and I’m delighted to be a tiny part of it.”

She added: “This may be the best sample of ‘Boots’ yet! And the beat goes on… #Beyonce.”

Recently, Beyonce also covered Dolly Parton’s classic, ‘Jolene,’ on her Cowboy Carter, and she named Dolly as the only writer for her version of this classic.

Bey sings in her version, “I’m warnin’ you, don’t come for my man,” which is different from Dolly’s version, where she is ‘begging’ Jolene.

Dolly reacted to this version and said, “Wow, I just heard ‘Jolene.’ Beyoncé is giving that girl some trouble and she deserves it! Love, Dolly P.”

Kenan Thompson Addresses ‘Quiet On Set’ Documentary

Recently, Kenan Thompson, who starred in the Nickelodeon show All That, shared how he feels following the release of the Quiet on Set documentary.

Thompson speaks on Dan Schneider’s involvement saying, “It’s tough for me because I can’t really speak on things that I’ve never witnessed.” He continued, “Because all these things happened after I left, basically, and Dan wasn’t really on Kenan and Kel like that. I mean, he got a ‘created by’ credit but it was a different showrunner, so our worlds weren’t overly overlapping like that outside of All That necessarily.”

He added, “I think it’s a good thing that the doc is out and is putting things on display that need to be—stories that need to be told for accountability sake but it’s definitely tough to watch because I have fond memories of that place.”

2 Bodies Recovered from Key Bridge Collapse

baltimore cargo ship

(Wednesday, March 27, 2024) – New developments in the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. Authorities announced this evening the bodies of 2 of the 6 missing construction workers have been recovered. The two men were found inside a red truck submerged in the waters of the Patapsco River. They have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, who was from Mexico and living in Baltimore, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, who was from Guatemala and living in Dundalk, Maryland. The men were part of a construction crew fixing potholes on the bridge, were from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Officials say the search for the four other victims will resume once the waters are clear of debris. But for now, all search efforts have been exhausted with authorities believing the other vehicles with victims inside are encased in superstructures and concrete from the collapsed bridge.

Meantime, the investigation ramped up as the Baltimore region continues to reel from the sudden loss of a major transportation link that’s part of the highway loop around the city. The disaster also closed the port that is vital to the city’s shipping industry. “The collapse of the Key Bridge is not just a Maryland crisis. The collapse of the Key Bridge is a global crisis,” said Maryland Governor Wes Moore.

The Key bridge typically carries some 30,000 vehicles a day. Officials say that disruption of land travel coupled with shipping travel with not only affect the thousands of dockworkers, but also U.S. consumers across the country for months or perhaps years to come.

Washington Caps and Wizards Staying Put In DC

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and Caps and Wizards Owner Ted Leonsis

Washington, D.C. (Wednesday, March 27, 2024) – The District has struck a deal with the owner of the Washington Capitals and Wizards to keep the two teams in DC through 2050. News of the deal came on the same day the City of Alexandria announced it had ended negotiations to bring the teams to Potomac Yard. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin blamed personal and political agendas for killing the Alexandria deal.

While some Virginia leaders were licking their wounds, many DC leaders were rejoicing in the city’s big win. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, and Ted Leonsis – Chief Executive Officer of Monumental Sports & Entertainment joined forces Wednesday afternoon at the Capitol One Arena to announce the $515 million dollar commitment to expand the arena into a state-of-the-art downtown facility. “We made a great offer – and kept that offer on the table – because we have known all along that this is a win-win for our city and the teams. This is a catalytic investment in Downtown DC. We are excited to have Monumental as our partners in DC’s Comeback and we look forward to working together to win for DC, said Bowser.

“I look at outcomes, not process, and we got to the right outcome,” said Ted Leonsis. “I know this was a difficult process and I want people to understand how much I love Washington D.C. and how much I’ve always loved Washington D.C. Mayor Bowser and her team heard us and worked with us and gave us the tools for us to meet the needs of our business to expand right here in downtown. We are going to have time to talk about our experience in Virginia, but that is not today. Today is about staying in D.C. and is about what the Mayor and Council have done in downtown D.C. We got to this place because we kept an honest dialogue with the Mayor and her staff and we both took the high road as we didn’t know how things would end. This is more than an investment from the city – it’s a true partnership demonstrated by all of these investments which the city has committed to for our fans to have an exceptional gameday experience.”

The District of Columbia Government will provide $515 million toward the project.

“Monumental Sports has been a great partner with the District since acquiring the Arena nearly 14 years ago. We’re ecstatic to keep them as a cornerstone of our Downtown. As we’ve said all along: our government is able to move quickly and follow through on our commitment,” said Chairman Mendelson. “With the extended relationship with Monumental, we’re looking forward to the reinvigoration of Gallery Place/Chinatown.”

It is estimated with a total projected cost of approximately $800 million, the complete renovation will encompass extensive upgrades to the arena designed to modernize and improve the overall fan experience, as well as expand retail and concessions and improve the flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Bowser says the aforementioned will mean that Monumental Sports & Entertainment can continue to attract top-tier events. The project will also drive increased tourism and revenue, thereby benefiting local businesses, not to mention new construction and other job opportunities.

2 Rescued , 6 Still Remain In Key Bridge Collapse Search

A massive search and rescue is underway in Baltimore after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Crews were working on the bridge when a container ship struck the bridge. Rescuers are searching for six missing people after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in Baltimore.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski is offering support to those impacted by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge following a collision with a cargo ship.

The incident, which occurred early in the morning, resulted in multiple cars plunging into the water below. Olszewski emphasized the importance of search, rescue, and recovery efforts, thanking first responders for their selfless work.

Two people have been rescued, with one hospitalized. The collapse was caused by a cargo ship striking the bridge early Tuesday morning. All eight individuals on the bridge at the time were MDOT contractors. The ship’s crew is safe, and authorities are conducting a search and rescue mission despite frigid water temperatures.

The FBI is investigating the incident, but no evidence of terrorism has been found.

Supreme Court Decision Keeps Trump On State Ballots

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday unanimously restored Donald Trump to 2024 presidential primary ballots, rejecting state attempts to ban the Republican former president over the Capitol riot.

The justices ruled a day before the Super Tuesday primaries that states cannot invoke a post-Civil War constitutional provision to keep presidential candidates from appearing on ballots. That power resides with Congress, the court wrote in an unsigned opinion.

Trump posted on his social media network shortly after the decision was released: “BIG WIN FOR AMERICA!!!” The outcome ends efforts in ColoradoIllinoisMaine and elsewhere to kick Trump, the front-runner for his party’s nomination, off the ballot because of his attempts to undo his loss in the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden, culminating in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Court Appearance For Alleged Shooter of DC Housing Authority Officer

The man accused of shooting a DC Housing Authority police officer last week is due in a DC court.

40-year-old Victor Terrill of Landover has been held without bond since his arrest for assaulting an officer while armed.

Police say Terrill and a female, who did not live at the Carroll Apartments at 410 M Street, SE, both refused to leave the premises.  After a scuffle, Terrill shot a housing officer in the abdomen then fled to a nearby parking garage where he barricaded himself for several hours before being apprehended by police.

Streets were blocked off and residents were told to shelter in place for several hours.

Friday, March 8, a hearing is scheduled to determine if they will release Terrill or detain him.
