Biden Issues Immigration Executive Order

President Biden taking executive action today to provide a pathway to citizenship to some 500-thousand undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens.  Biden’s executive order allows non-citizens who have been in the country for at least ten years and are married to a U.S. citizen to apply for permanent residence without leaving the country.  Biden’s order comes weeks after his administration adopted a crackdown on asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Alsobrooks Campaign Sign Vandalized

Maryland’s U.S. Senate campaign has taken an ugly turn. A campaign sign with the image of Angela Alsobrooks was defaced with a crosshairs placed on Alsobrooks’ photo and the letters KKK written.  The sign was located on Laurel-Bowie Road in Laurel.   Alsobrooks, who is Black and county executive for Prince George’s, is the Demoratic nominee in the senate race against Republican and former Maryland governor Larry Hogan. Crosshairs is a target symbol, while KKK is the acronym for the white supremacy group the Ku Klux Klan. Alsobrooks’ campaign spokesperson says the primary concern is for Alsobrooks’ safety, adding, the “hateful threat will not deter Angela or her campaign.” Larry Hogan issued a statement saying, “Hate, threats of violence, and racism must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. They have no place in Maryland.”

What’s Open and Closed on Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is June 19 and has been a federally-recognized holiday since 2021.

The holiday commemorating the end of slavery has been honored for many years, but with its relatively new federal status, this also means some businesses are closed.

For example, the United States Postal Service will not be delivering regular residential or business mail, and all post offices will be closed. Many major banks will also be closed, including Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, CitiBank and JPMorgan Chase.

However, UPS and FedEx delivery will run as scheduled, and all UPS Store and FedEx Office locations will be open.

Maryland Governor Pardons Marijuana Convictions

Calling it “the most sweeping level of pardons statewide anywhere in the nation,” Maryland Governor Wes Moore wiped out 175-thousand low-level marijuana convictions.

The governor says his executive order is a step to “heal decades of social and economic injustice.” Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown says the governor’s order has historic impact. Recreational cannabis was legalized in Maryland last year.

The state decriminalized possession of personal use amounts Jan. 1 of this year. Officials say it will take about two weeks for the pardoned convictions to be notated in the state’s judicial system. Those pardons do not expunge the convictions from a person’s criminal record.

Michael Jackson Remembered By Daughter Paris

‘Happy Father’s Day to All My Homies Out There That Don’t Have One’

Paris Jackson paid tribute to her late father, Michael Jackson, on Father’s Day by sharing throwback photos on Instagram.

She posted a picture of her father holding her as a baby and a family photo with her mother and brother.  In a heartfelt message, she wished a happy Father’s Day to those who don’t have one, emphasizing that they are not alone.

Paris also teased her upcoming music, hinting at personal and emotional lyrics. “I mean, is some of it going to be hard for some people to hear? For sure, yeah, because what I’m talking about is a lot of touchy things,” she shared.

Unfortunately, Michael Jackson’s children and mother cannot access their trust fund due to an ongoing IRS dispute over the late pop star’s estate.

The IRS claims the estate undervalued its assets and owes $700 million in taxes and penalties, which the estate is disputing.

The trust fund remains frozen until the estate’s request to re-evaluate Jackson’s music catalog is finalized.

Despite this, Katherine Jackson has received over $55 million from the estate since Michael Jackson died in 2009.

U.S. Supreme Strikes Down Gun Accessory Ban

Today, the Supreme Court struck down a Trump-era ban on bump stocks, a rapid-fire gun accessory that was used in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. The high court’s conservative majority found that the Trump administration did not follow federal law when it changed course from previous administrations after a gunman in Las Vegas attacked a country music festival with assault rifles equipped with bump stocks in 2017.   The gunman fired more than 1,000 rounds in the crowd in 11 minutes, wounding hundreds and killing dozens. The 6-3 majority opinion written by Justice Clarence Thomas said a semiautomatic rifle with a bump stock is not an illegal machine gun because it doesn’t make the weapon fire more than one shot with one pull of the trigger.

Two Killed In Car Meet-up Shooting

Two people are dead following a violent night at a car meet-up in Prince George’s County. The victims identified as 55-year-old Patrick Savoy of Charlotte Hall and 48-year-old Sheldon Proctor, of Waldorf.  A third person was shot, but suffered non-life threatening injuries.  Several months ago, Maryland governor Wes Moore signed into law legislation to stiffen penalties for certain violations associated with “street meetups.”  That law went into effect June 1.

Comedian and niece, Chante Wayans comments, “This is dope! Thank you for always supporting & letting me wear your clothes!🏳️‍🌈”

Singer Toddrick Hall added, “As someone who’s a part of the community and has worked with you closely I just want to say thank you for advocating for the community before and after you knew your child was a part of it!”

Hall continued, “We need more black fathers like you! Ppl say they love unconditionally but are willing to kick their own children/family to the curb when they don’t agree with their lifestyle mostly out of embarrassment of what their “friends” and church members will say. Proud of you for posting this with your chest. Love ya and happy pride 🏳️‍🌈”

U.S. Supreme Court Affirms Access To Abortion Pill

The Supreme Court is keeping widely used abortion pill mifepristone available to Americans.  The high court unanimously ruled that a group of anti-abortion doctors who challenged the FDA’s actions to make mifepristone more accessible did not have legal standing to sue and threw out the case.

The high court’s ruling will allow the pill to be mailed to patients without an in-person doctor’s visit. Abortion is banned at all stages of pregnancy in 14 states, and after about six weeks of pregnancy in three others, often before women realize they’re pregnant.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was part of the majority to overturn Roe, wrote for the court on Thursday that “federal courts are the wrong forum for addressing the plaintiffs’ concerns about FDA’s actions.”

While praising the decision, President Joe Biden signaled Democrats will continue to campaign heavily on abortion ahead of the November elections. “It does not change the fact that the right for a woman to get the treatment she needs is imperiled if not impossible in many states,” Biden said in a statement.

Supreme Court Preserves Access to Mifepristone, Abortion Medication

Washington, D.C. (Thursday, June 13, 2024) – In a decision that comes right smack in the middle of the presidential race, the U.S. Supreme Court today preserved access to the widely used abortion medication mifepristone.

Justices ruled that anti-abortion opponents lacked the legal right to sue over the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the drug. The decision comes nearly two years after the high court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Mifepristone is used in nearly two thirds of all abortions in the U.S. Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote for the court saying that “federal courts are the wrong forum for addressing the plaintiffs’ concerns about FDA’s actions.”

President Biden praised today’s decision. But added “it does not change the fact that the fight for a woman to get the treatment she needs is imperiled if not impossible in many states.”

Reboot Fans of the old-school series ‘227’ aren’t going to see Sandra Clark back in action.

Jackée Harry, who portrayed the popular character on the series from 1985 to 1990, was recently asked about a reboot by US Weekly Magazine. “I ain’t going back that far. I just don’t do that anymore. That character is done.”

Although Harry may not be into the idea of a ‘227’ reboot, she does cherish her continued friendship with fellow cast member, Regina King. “Besides one Emmy for [227], one of my favorite things was meeting Regina King because she’s one of my greatest friends,” she shared with Us. “It’s something that I know to happen, to have a real relationship with a person you work with and having that whole experience of the ’80s: living well, many husbands and a great positive tone.”

The series also starred legends like Marla Gibbs, Hal Williams, Regina King, Kia Goodwin, Helen Martin, and Alaina Reed Hall.

Usher Shares What It’s Like Raising A Child With Type 1 Diabetes

Usher recently opened up about his family life and how one of his children has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes with Parents.

He said, “Life would be different and it would change after that day. This wasn’t something that could easily be remedied—it was a lifestyle; it was a life change.”

He continued, “You would never think that a 6-year-old would have to all of a sudden be conscious of what they ate. Those are the last things that you’re thinking about when you’re that age, and then the idea that normalcy has changed in comparison to other children that my child would be around.”

He added, “If my child ever wanted to go on a trip or do the normal things that kids do to be social, I’m always thinking about it. It’s always lingering in the back of my mind.”

According to the  American Diabetes Association, these are symptoms of type 1 diabetes to know for all ages:

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
