R. Kelly Admitted To Marrying Aaliyah So She Could Get An Abortion

A “Jane Doe” revealed the reason why R. Kelly married Aaliyah in 1994 when she was just 15-years-old. The second “Jane Doe” of the trial against R. Kelly took the stand on Monday to give testimony in Kelly’s case where he’s accused of racketeering and four counts of violating the Mann Act.

The 23-year-old “Jane Doe” says the singer married Aaliyah so she could have an abortion. The woman testified that Kelly gathered his girlfriends together for a Q&A session and one woman asked why he married the “Try Again” singer.

Doe says Kelly told the girls he married Aaliyah because only parents and spouses could give permission for a minor to have an abortion. He also told them he gave her money and a “bat phone” for the singer to reach Kelly in an emergency.

Doe will continue her testimony on Tuesday (August 24th) at the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse in New York City.

Do you think information regarding Aaliyah should be used in Kelly’s case since she is deceased?

COVID-19 Booster Shot and FDA Full Approval of Pfizer Vaccine

The plan calls for booster doses eight months after people get their second shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

Just last week… U.S. health officials announced plans to dispense COVID-19 booster shots to all Americans.  This… to shore up protection amid the surging delta variant and evidence that the vaccines’ effectiveness is falling.  The plan calls for booster doses eight months after people get their second shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.  The booster doses could begin the week of September 20th for those with immune deficiencies.  That would still be the big news if it were not for the announcement today that the FDA is giving full approval to the Pfizer COVID vaccine.  We’re talking about all of this and more tonight in our COVID-19 update on this Medical Monday.

DMV Officials Return Historic Gravestones to Memorial Site

The mayor of DC was joined today by the governors of Maryland and Virginia to repatriate headstones from the historic Columbian Harmony Cemetery to a proper Memorial site.

Washington, D.C. – (Monday, August 23, 2021) – Today, generations after gravestones were wrongly removed from a Washington, D.C., cemetery and dumped to control erosion on the Potomac River, Mayor Muriel Bowser, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, and Governor Ralph S. Northam of Virginia, today joined descendants to begin the process of honoring their family members by returning the gravestones to a proper memorial site.

The story begins in 1859 at Columbian Harmony Cemetery, which stood for a century as Washington’s most prominent burial site for Americans of African descent. In the 1960s, the cemetery was moved to make room for commercial development, which in time would include the Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metro station. The remains were relocated to a memorial garden in Landover, Maryland. But in a dehumanizing act, most of the grave markers and monuments were sold for scrap or dumped for erosion-control rubble along the Potomac River.

Many of the grave markers were deposited in a two-mile stretch of King George County, Virginia, where Caledon State Park and the home of Senator Richard Stuart front the Potomac River. In 2016, as Senator Stuart walked along the river, he discovered the gravestones on the property he had just purchased. He turned to historians to learn about the gravestones and their origin, and then to other state leaders to determine how to return them to a proper memorial site.

“It’s our duty to make sure these headstones are returned to the graves they were intended to mark and honor,” said Governor Northam. “As we reckon with the many impacts of systemic racism, we must tell the full and true story of our shared history, including indignities inflicted on people of color even after death.”

Governor Northam, as part of a major investment in historic justice, proposed funding for the recovery and restoration of the gravestones and the creation of a shoreline memorial. Virginia has approved a total of $4 million for the project.

“We know that the 37,000 people who were laid to rest at Columbian Harmony Cemetery were the men, women, and families who helped build Washington, D.C. into the city we are today,” said District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser.  “They were talented soldiers, civil rights leaders, dressmakers, and so much morethey were moms and dads, grandmothers and grandfathers, friends and neighbors. They made and continue to make our families, our city, and our nation proud, and today we honor their lives.”

“As soon as we learned of the massive undertaking to recover these headstones, we offered the full support of our entire Maryland team,” said Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland. “We have no greater responsibility as leaders in a democracy than preserving for future generations the importance of clearly differentiating between right and wrong.”

“It was an incredibly special time for me to be able to buy back the property where my people came to America, literally, in the 1600s,” said Virginia State Senator Richard Stuart. “But if I were the descendant of the individuals whose stones landed on the river’s shoreline, I would be angry. The dead are supposed to be revered and respected. Today we begin the work of righting this wrong and honoring these Americans.”

Today’s event included the ceremonial transfer of 55 headstones from Virginia to Maryland, beginning the effort to return the headstones to National Harmony Memorial Park in Landover, Maryland. The headstones will become part of a one-acre memorial garden honoring the more than 37,000 people buried in the original cemetery. Among them were two sons of abolitionist Frederick Douglas, Elizabeth Keckleya confidante of Mary Todd Lincoln, Phillip Reidwho helped create the Statue of Freedom atop the U.S. Capitol, many Black Union Army veterans, and one of D.C.’s first Black policemen.

Officials from Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia have partnered with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and the History, Arts, and Science Action Network (HASAN), a restorative justice nonprofit organization based in Hyattsville, Maryland, for the project. This fall, crews from the National Guard in Maryland and Virginia will seek to unearth and recover additional headstones along a two-mile stretch of the Potomac near Caledon State Park, where the first ones were salvaged. HASAN has been leading efforts to work with the descendant community and research the personal stories of those buried in the cemetery.

The grave markers that have been rendered illegible from being worn smooth over time and cannot be removed from the water will become part of a living park-like memorial wall with protective shoreline vegetation. Boaters will be able to learn about the site through historic markers that will be placed at Virginia’s Caledon State Park.“Ensuring these grave markers and the memories of those they recognized are treated with dignity and respect is another victory in our battle for historic justice in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources Matthew J. Strickler. “While we cannot undo the harm caused in the past, we can do our best to tell the stories truthfully, and strive to foster better understanding and a new harmony in the present and future.”

“HASAN is honored to be a critical part of this initiative, and to help elevate and center the voices of the descendants throughout the process,” said HASAN Representative Dr. Kelley Fanto Deetz. “We hope that this brings honor and respect to those buried in the cemetery, and to their families.”

“The desecration of the tombstones should never have happened. While we can’t correct that wrong, we can handle them with dignity and respect and try to reunite them with the people they are memorializing,” said Director of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Clyde Cristman. “The Commonwealth is committed to the historic preservation of these gravestones as well as the protection of the shoreline with the new Harmony Living Shoreline memorial.”

Chadwick Boseman’s Wife Honors Him at Stand Up

Simone Boseman, Chad Boseman’s wife, honors the late actor at a recent Stand Up to Cancer Event.
She performed the emotional ballad, “I’ll Be Seeing You,” during the show.
Anthony Anderson, who hosted, described the ballad as “a song about living with the reality of loss and finding a way forward.”
He also spoke about Chadwick and said, “The world lost an incredible artist and a true hero. But before he was a public figure, he was a person like you or me: a son, a brother, uncle, cousin, friend, colleague, husband. Many of us are all too familiar with the fracture a dearly loved one’s passing leaves in the lives of those who love them.”
Would you be able to get through a performance like that without getting emotional?

Did Feds Target BLM Protesters?

A new report is claiming that former President Trump’s Justice Department intentionally targeted Black Lives Matter protesters with prosecutions to disrupt the movement.
The Movement for Black Lives released the report today explaining it was conducted in partnership with the Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility Clinic at the City University of New York School of Law.
The groups found that “much of the drive to use federal charges against protesters stemmed from top-down directives” from Trump and former Attorney General William Barr.
The study also claims, “These directives, meant to disrupt the movement, were the primary reason for the unprecedented federalization of protest-related prosecutions seen in 2020.”
Do you think the BLM movement got a bad rap because of these alleged directives?

Sources: US To Recommend COVID Vaccine Boosters at 8 Months

By ZEKE MILLER Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. health experts are expected to recommend COVID-19 vaccine boosters for all Americans, regardless of age, eight months after they received their second dose of the shot. The goal is to ensure lasting protection against the coronavirus as the delta variant spreads across the country. That’s according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. An announcement was expected as soon as this week, with doses beginning to be administered widely once the Food and Drug Administration formally approves the vaccines. U.S. health officials recommended boosters last week for some with weakened immune systems.

Naomi Osaka Pauses News Conference In Tears After Reporter’s Question

Naomi Osaka briefly paused a news conference and left the podium in tears after a question about her relationship with the media.
A Cincinnati reporter asked the 23-year-old tennis star “You’re not crazy about dealing with us, especially in this format. Yet you have a lot of outside interests that are served by having a media platform. How do you balance the two?”
Osaka said she was “not really sure how to balance the two. Like I’m figuring it out at the same time as you are”.
After the question, Osaka began to tear up and left the podium for a few minutes before returning to finish the news conference. Osaka’s agent later called the reporter a “bully”.
Osaka made headlines earlier this year when she withdrew from the French Open after announcing she would not be speaking with the press.
Was the reporter’s question out of line? Should athletes be forced to answer questions from the media?

Politics Could Slow Haiti Humanitarian Aid

Haiti’s troubled history may slow aid to earthquake victims

Humanitarian aid is flowing into Haiti following Saturday’s 7.2-magnitude earthquake there and a death toll that has reached 1,297. However, the Caribbean nation’s political unrest, as well as an approaching tropical storm, is complicating efforts. Nonprofit groups and philanthropy experts say the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise, as well as accusations that some money raised following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti never reached those in need, will make fundraising for the nation even tougher. Aid to Haiti has been under a microscope since 2015 when an investigation from ProPublica and NPR questioned where $500 million raised by the American Red Cross was spent.

Biden traveled back to Washington from the Camp David presidential retreat to speak to the nation. It will be his first public remarks on the Afghanistan situation in nearly a week. Church of MLK’s 1st Leadership Position Gets Museum Funding

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Work has begun to make a museum out of the crumbling Alabama church where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was elected to his first leadership position in the civil rights movement. King was 26 when he was chosen to lead the Montgomery Improvement Association in 1955, on the first day of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The National Parks Service approved a $500,000 renovation grant in 2018 for what is now an annex to the Mt. Zion AME Church. But Central Alabama Community Foundation President Charles “C.P.” Everett tells the Montgomery Advertiser that grant money was slowed by a series of problems, including the coronavirus pandemic.

Ray Charles To Join Country Music Hall of Fame

NASHVILLE, Ten.. (AP) — R&B legend Ray Charles and Grammy-winning duo The Judds will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame on Monday announced their new members, who will be formally inducted in a ceremony in 2022.
Charles showed the commercial potential of country music when he released “Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music” in 1962, a genre-defying personal project to the Georgia-born singer and piano player. Charles’ versions of country classics became one of the best selling country albums of the era.
Naomi Judd and her daughter, Wynonna, were the most successful duo in country music in the 1980s, with more than a dozen No. 1 hits, including “Mama, He’s Crazy,” “Love Can Build a Bridge” and “Rockin’ With the Rhythm of the Rain.”
Other inductions include Eddie Bayers, a drummer in Nashville for decades who worked on 300 platinum records and is a member of the Grand Ole Opry band. Bayers is the first drummer to be inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
And pedal steel guitar player Pete Drake, a member of Nashville’s A-team of skilled session musicians, played on hits like “Stand By Your Man” by Tammy Wynette and “He Stopped Loving Her Today” by George Jones. Drake, who died in 1988, is the first pedal steel guitar player to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

All DC Healthcare Professionals Must Get Vaccinated

DC is moving to make sure more workers across the city are vaccinated against the coronavirus, announcing today the guidelines for healthcare workers to take the shot by September 30th.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Health announced that by September 30, 2021 all health care workers in the District of Columbia must receive at least the first dose of Pfizer or Moderna or one dose of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

This requirement applies to:

  • All licensed, certified and registered health professionals;
  • All EMS providers such as paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs); and
  • All unlicensed healthcare workers (i.e. patient care technicians, personal care aides, environmental services staff).

“As we continue to see a rise in the numbers of positive cases among unvaccinated persons across the city, it is necessary that we ensure all health care workers in the District are vaccinated to decrease the spread of COVID-19,” said Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, Director of DC Health. “This new mandate can reduce the likelihood of a COVID-19 outbreak in healthcare settings and among vulnerable populations.”

Two doses of the Pfizer vaccine or the Moderna vaccine, or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, are required:

(a) before the date of submission of an application for licensure, certification, or registration;

(b) on the date of submission of an application for renewal of licensure, registration, or certification;

(c) before beginning employment or a contractual relationship if not required to have a license, certification, or registration; or

(d) on or before a date specified by the Department of Health in written or electronic correspondence to the person.

Health care professionals may be exempt due to religious beliefs or medical conditions.

Why Haiti Is Prone To Devastating Earthquakes

By BEN FINLEY Associated Press
Earthquakes have been wreaking havoc in Haiti since at least the 18th century, when the city of Port-au-Prince was destroyed twice in 19 years. Saturday’s powerful quake killed hundreds and injured thousands more. Eleven years earlier a temblor killed tens of thousands of people, if not hundreds of thousands. Haiti sits near the intersection of two tectonic plates that make up the Earth’s crust. Earthquakes can occur when those plates move against each other and create friction. Haiti is also densely populated. Plus, many of its buildings are designed to withstand hurricanes — not earthquakes. Those buildings can survive strong winds but are vulnerable to collapse when the ground shakes.

Search For Survivors Continues After Haiti Earthquake

By MARK STEVENSON and EVENS SANON Associated Press
LES CAYES, Haiti (AP) — Haitians are searching for survivors and the dead in collapsed buildings following a powerful earthquake over the weekend as hospitals overflow with patients. Thousands more in the quake zone are sleeping outside, clutching small transistor radios tuned to the news. Officials have raised the death toll from Saturday’s earthquake to at least 1,297. And the devastation could soon worsen. Tropical Depression Grace is predicted to reach Haiti on Monday night, bringing the potential for heavy rain, flooding and landslides. The country’s Civil Protection Agency says the magnitude 7.2 earthquake also left at least 5,700 people injured.

Earthquake Hits Haiti Killing Hundreds

304 people are reported dead and a desperate search is underway in Haiti for more victims following a massive earthquake this morning.

(Saturday, August 14, 2021) – Over 300 people are reported dead and the death toll is expected to climb even higher following a massive 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti Saturday morning.  The U.S. Geological Survey predicts the death toll could reach into the thousands, raising fears that the disaster could be similar to the quake that struck Haiti back in 2010.

More than 1,800 people are also injured.  Prime Minister Ariel Henry says the country is in urgent need of medical supplies.  President Biden has authorized immediate assistance.  The epicenter of the earthquake was about 7.5 miles northeast of Saint-Louis-du-Sud and 10 kilometers deep.

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti leaving as many at 300,000 dead and more than 1.5 million displaced.

A state of emergency has been declared in Haiti for the next month as officials asses the damage and as crews search for victims and survivors.
