“With many also showcasing ’80s hints of bold shoulders, it shows an emerging optimism on the red carpet and a willingness to have a little fun with fashion,” said Kerry Pieri, the fashion and features director for HarpersBazaar.com.
NEW YORK (AP) — Did someone send a memo? Taraji P. Henson, Zoe Kazan, Susan Kelechi Watson, Mandy Moore and Marisa Tomei all showed up to the Emmys in two-tone looks of pink and red that stood out on the awards’ purple carpet.
The dual tones were the strongest trend among the women on Sunday night, where outfits from Zendaya, Gwendoline Christie and current red carpet darling Billy Porter also turned heads.
While it’s common to see many stars wearing a certain color, the combination of pink and red was particularly eye popping on the Emmys purple carpet.
“With many also showcasing ’80s hints of bold shoulders, it shows an emerging optimism on the red carpet and a willingness to have a little fun with fashion,” said Kerry Pieri, the fashion and features director for HarpersBazaar.com.
Henson’s French tulle gown with a sheer red cape was custom Vera Wang Collection. Kazan’s black, magenta and pink silk gown with bow detail was Gucci. Badgley Mischka created Kelechi Watson’s version, in ruby crepe with blush pink sleeves that fell off the shoulder. Moore wore Brandon Maxwell, a pink twill gazar blouse with a red crepe cummerbund skirt.
Corsets, too, had a wow moment. Indya Moore wore white Louis Vuitton and Zendaya rocked Vera Wang in green with a daring top.
“Both also had slits up to there, making this the current approach to something sexy. Maybe it means we’re all finally ready to move on from the naked dress,” Pieri said.
Pieri considered Christie’s intensely “Game of Thrones” Bordeaux cape look a near miss. While costume-y, she said, “celebrating the end of a major epic fantasy drama sometimes calls for gilded robes.”
Christie was Brienne of Tarth on the popular, defunct HBO series, which won top honors for best drama at the ceremony.
Marielle Bobo, fashion director for Essence, said seafoam was another shade du jour — on Regina King, Brittany Snow, Jameela Jamil and Padma Lakshmi.
“They stunned in the soft pastel hue which complements a variety of skin tones,” Bobo said, also noting the red and pink parade that made for an “unexpected yet refreshing combination.”
There were some classic Hollywood metallic moments as well, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus in sequined gold and Rachel Brosnahan in navy blue, the latter offering a “modern take on Hollywood glam with architectural accents,” Bobo said.
Laura Linney, Chrissy Metz, Niecy Nash, Dominique Jackson and Patricia Clarkson embraced heavily sequined looks.
Kerry Washington, Angela Bassett and Amy Poehler all opted for pants, while Porter, who has made headlines with his red-carpet gowns, chose sparkling stripe trousers from Michael Kors and a huge statement hat with a towering brim on one side by Stephen Jones. Porter ended up making history later as the first openly gay man to win an Emmy for best actor in a drama series for his role of Pray Tell on FX’s “Pose.”
Misa Hylton, an MCM global creative partner and designer, was among the fans of Ava DuVernay’s custom Reem Acra tulle gown that screamed princess in Champagne gold crystals and sequin embroidery.
“It was so stunning,” she said. “Absolutely gorgeous. She looked really elegant and beautiful. I’m not used to her dressed up in that way. She definitely wowed.”
Also on her best-dressed list was Jamil. It was called mint by the designer, Monique Lhuillier. It had a pleated ball skirt with a single-sleeve bandeau top. She wore it with a bright orange lip and matching polish on her nails.
“She looked like a princess but she was very modern. I loved the bangs and her long hair,” Hylton said. “I love color and I love unexpected.”
Among her misses: Greta Lee in an iridescent pistachio green puff midriff top with a full skirt. She made use of her look’s pockets on the purple carpet.
“I see maybe where she was going, but I didn’t think it looked good on her,” Hylton said. “Maybe if it was black it would have been a more classic look.”
Hylton was underwhelmed for a good half of the carpet.
“I was bored,” she said. “On the men, the brown tuxedos were just drab.”
But Jonathan Evans, style director for Esquire, praised men in brown like Dan Levy and others who changed things up. He also included “Brett Gelman with his rusty shawl collar tux and Kit Harington’s conspicuous air tie.”
Bobo counted Zendaya among her carpet wins.
“It gave me flashbacks to her Met Gala Disney moment,” she said, “but this time she served Poison Ivy realness with strawberry tresses to complement her green number.”
She also heralded Bassett, in a custom crimson look from Antonio Grimaldi, with sculptural neckline and dramatic cape detail to her top. Bobo said the actress “continues to make waves on the red carpet.”
But her top moment was Lee wearing Christopher John Rogers, a top and skirt look from his spring-summer 2020 collection.
“This was a major win for designers of color, who rarely make it to the grand stage at these sort of events,” Bobo said.

“This is for Raymond, Yusef, Antron, Kevin, and King Korey Wise. Thank you so much, it’s an honor. It’s a blessing,” said Jerome.
NEW YORK (AP) — The searing TV series on the plight of the Central Park Five created a memorable Emmy moment Sunday when the five exonerated men stood and were honored at the awards show.
The four-part Netflix series explores the true story of five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem who were coerced into confessing to a rape they didn’t commit in 1989 and follows them over the course of 25 years to their eventual exoneration.
Show creator Ava DuVernay lost in the directing and writing categories but Jharrel Jerome won for best lead actor in a limited series.
“I feel like I should just be in the Bronx right now, just chilling, waiting for my mom’s cooking. But I am here in front of my inspirations,” said Jerome, a New Yorker whose mother told him about this ugly chapter in city history.
He then acknowledged the Central Park Five — Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise — who had been invited.
“This is for Raymond, Yusef, Antron, Kevin, and King Korey Wise. Thank you so much, it’s an honor. It’s a blessing,” said Jerome.
Some of the men raised fists in the air, while others, including Wise, had tears in their eyes. Jerome played Wise in the series.
The case of the Central Park Five cut the city along racial lines from the outset, with the victim being a young white woman. It drew worldwide attention.
It took years for the five to be exonerated, and they spent most of their youth in prison. Another man later confessed to the attack.
The series has had real-life consequences for former “Central Park Five” prosecutor Linda Fairstein. Fallout from the Netflix show has led to her being dropped by her book publisher, Dutton. Fairstein also resigned as a Board of Trustees member at Vassar College and from the victims-services agency, Safe Horizon.

Walmart to stop selling electronic cigarettes at its stores

President Donald Trump has proposed a federal ban on flavored e-cigarettes and vaping products.
Michigan banned the sale of flavored e-cigarettes this week. A few local governments, including San Francisco, have passed bans on flavored tobacco.
E-cigarettes represent a very small part of Walmart’s nicotine business, which also includes traditional cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and nicotine gum. But the vaping industry has come under increased scrutiny after the deaths and illnesses — along with a surge in underage e-cigarette use.
More than 500 people have been diagnosed with breathing illnesses after using e-cigarettes and other vaping devices, according to U.S. health officials. An eighth death was reported this week. But health officials still have not identified the cause.
In July, Walmart raised the minimum age to purchase tobacco products, including all e-cigarettes, to 21. It also said then that it was in the process of discontinuing the sale of fruit- and dessert-flavored electronic nicotine delivery systems.

The plan is for students to leave school and walk to the White House and then the U.S. Capitol today starting at 11 a.m. This walkout is ahead of a major protest planned by Shut Down D.C. Strike Coalition on Monday. Climate Change activists are looking to block major intersections in the city to stop traffic and bring attention to their cause. They want lawmakers to take action on climate change now.
As for the students that choose to walk out of school today. Here are what area school leaders are saying. In the District of Columbia students who walk out of class have 5 days in which to turn in a letter from their parents permitting them to take part. In Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties students who walk out of class will be given an unexcused absence. In Fairfax County, Virginia students will only receive an excused absence if they were notified in advance that they were taking part in today’s protest.

Opposition, Support For Statehood Falls Along Partisan Lines
(Washington, DC) — Support and opposition for DC statehood is falling along party lines. A hearing on a bill to make DC the 51st state was held in the House today for the first time in more than two decades. Local lawmakers and supportive Democrats made the case that DC residents deserve the full benefits of citizenship. Republicans kicked off the hearing by calling the city too corrupt and financially dependent on the federal government to become a state.

Contributed by Rebecca Johnson
Actress, fashion icon, and activist Tracee Ellis Ross launched a hair care line for Afro-textured hair. Pattern was available online September 9 and will be available in select Ulta stores on September 23. The line will include products and tools for in and out of shower use. At the time, Black actresses that sported their natural curls on camera were few and far in between.
“By the time I made it onto Girlfriends, I was one of very few women wearing their hair naturally in Hollywood. I learned to embrace my natural texture and curl pattern and love it and care for it. But it was a journey not supported by commercials, entertainment and rows of products in every store,” she told WWD.

The men have sought compensation over the past 18 months from the state Board of Public Works without success. Hogan instructed the board to work with the state’s administrative law judges to create a plan to pay the men. The Republican governor put the blame on Democrats for failing to pass laws to create rules for paying exonerees. The five men collectively spent 120 years in prison for crimes they did not commit.

In early August, “The Rookie” co-star said she was quitting the show because of sexual harassment and racial discrimination she experienced during its freshman year last season.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress Afton Williamson’s claims of misconduct against her on the set of “The Rookie” weren’t substantiated by an independent investigator, according to the ABC drama series’ producer.
Production company Entertainment One said Tuesday the investigation led it to conclude no unlawful or inappropriate behavior was committed by the co-workers accused by Williamson.
In early August, “The Rookie” co-star said she was quitting the show because of sexual harassment and racial discrimination she experienced during its freshman year last season.
The probe, which began in late June, involved some 400 hours of interviews and review of video and other evidence, Entertainment One said in a statement. The full report wasn’t released for privacy reasons, said the company known as eOne.
Williamson called the finding “heartbreaking” in a lengthy Instagram post Tuesday evening, saying the results were the result of lies and a cover-up. She vowed to continue to work to improve conditions for cast and crew on sets.
The executive producers, one of whom Williamson previously accused of mishandling her allegations, were found to have “addressed matters of which they were made aware promptly and in a fair and reasonable manner,” eOne said.
The company said it recognizes that people view situations through their own “experiences and perspectives,” adding that it regretted that “Ms. Williamson’s time on the series was not a positive one for her, and we respect her decision to move on to other projects.”
A separate statement from the Disney-owned network welcomed the probe’s completion.
“We are confident that eOne takes these matters seriously and that they will continue to look for the best ways to surface concerns and address complaints,” ABC and ABC Studios said in a joint statement.
The law firm of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp hired third-party EXTTI, a firm that investigates allegations of workplace misconduct and discrimination, to handle the probe, eOne said.
The Los Angeles-based crime drama, starring Nathan Fillion in the title role of a rookie police officer, returns Sept. 29 for its second season.

Williams worked as a volunteer wrestling coach at Quince Orchard High School. He has been charged with multiple counts of child porn possession. The principal at the school, Elizabeth Thomas does not believe the charges have anything to do with his time at the school. They are however making available to students in need psychologists, counselors and pupil personnel workers on hand for those in need.

Antonio Brown faces more sex assault allegations.
(Undated) — A second woman is accusing New England Patriots wide receiver Antonio Brown of sexual assault. In an article posted by Sports Illustrated Monday, a woman who chose to remain anonymous details how she met Brown at a charity event in 2017 and how he later paid to have her do some artwork at his home in the suburbs north of Pittsburgh. She claims that on her second day there, Brown exposed himself to her. The latest allegation comes after a former personal trainer filed a lawsuit against Brown saying he had sexually assaulted her on different occasions in 2017 and 2018. Brown has denied those allegations. The accuser in that case, Britney Taylor, met with NFL investigators on Monday.

Lewandowski On Hot Seat In House
(Washington, DC) — Former Trump campaign chief Corey Lewandowski is on the hot seat in the House. Lewandowski told the Judiciary Committee that the American people continue to be “sold a false narrative” about the 2016 election. During his time as campaign manager, Lewandowski said he doesn’t recall having any conversations with “foreign entities.” He also condemned what he called a “fake Russia collusion narrative.” Lewandowski said the committee is going down a “rabbit hole” in an effort to bring President Trump down.
The panel is investigating alleged presidential obstruction of justice and abuse of power. It’s a step toward the possible opening of impeachment proceedings against President Trump. The White House ordered limits on Lewandowski’s testimony through executive privilege, even though he has never worked for the Trump administration.
The Los Angeles Times reported Netflix paid well above the speculated $500 million NBCUniversal paid to retake “The Office,” and the reported $130 million Hulu parent Walt Disney Co. paid for “Seinfeld.” Both of those deals are for U.S. streaming only — Netflix has bought the global rights to show “Seinfeld.”
LOS GATOS, Calif. (AP) — Move aside, “Friends” and “The Office.” Netflix now has a new gem — a show about nothing.
The company announced Monday it would start streaming all 180 episodes of “Seinfeld” in 2021, gaining a hugely popular addition to its library as the battle for viewers heats up.
Netflix Inc., which pioneered the binge-watching culture of streaming, was dealt a double blow this summer when it lost “The Office” and “Friends,” two of its most popular shows, as their respective owners pulled them to add to their own streaming services.
“The Office” will leave at the end of 2020 to join NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, and “Friends” will leave at the beginning of 2020 to join the upcoming HBO Max service.
It’s a battle not likely to wane as the streaming TV space grows more crowded. Netflix has created significant momentum with its original shows, but new competitors are constantly popping up, including streaming arrivals from Apple and Disney.
Still, Netflix has a head start in the online space, with its deep library of past and new shows. It struck the five-year deal with Sony Pictures Television for the global streaming rights to “Seinfeld,” the Emmy-winning television comedy which aired its final episode in 1998. Terms were not released.
“Seinfeld is the television comedy that all television comedy is measured against,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement.
Netflix noted it is still focused on producing its own shows — but it can’t ignore the demand for rewatching old hits. The company spent $12 billion on original and non-original programming last year.
Jerry Seinfeld’s show “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” and his standup special “Jerry Before Seinfeld” are already distributed by Netflix.

Smith’s reading will take place in Times Square in New York City. Mirren will appear in Trafalgar Square in London.
Each location is expected to feature live performances. The sleep out will also be held in other major cities including Chicago, Amsterdam, Madrid and Los Angeles.
All the proceeds raised will go toward registered charities helping homeless and displaced people.
Trebek told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Tuesday that after a short period of optimism when he stopped chemotherapy, his “numbers shot up” and doctors ordered him back on the treatment.
NEW YORK (AP) — “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek says he’s had a setback in his battle with pancreatic cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy again.
Trebek told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Tuesday that after a short period of optimism when he stopped chemotherapy, his “numbers shot up” and doctors ordered him back on the treatment.
The 79-year-old game show host announced in March that he had Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. But he hasn’t missed a day on the show, which tapes its episodes in advance.
Trebek said his goals for the summer were to get his strength and hair back, and his progress on both fronts was “dismal.”

Scabies is spread by close skin to skin contact. The Prince George’s County Health Department believes it may have spread by the sheets used by the firefighters when they stay in the firehouse. Health officials also feel that is highly unlikely that any patient that was helped by a first responder caught Scabies. It is being recommended that if you feel you may have contracted it after being assisted by a firefighter to contact your physician immediately.
Chief Barksdale says this outbreak is not affecting service. Fire Chief Benjamin Barksdale, said they took quick action to stop the spread of scabies as soon as they were made aware of the mite. The issue came up last week as a result 205 firefighters were checked out.

The vapor that Jenkins inhaled didn’t relax him. After two puffs, he ended up in a coma.
That’s because what he was vaping didn’t have any CBD, the suddenly popular compound extracted from the cannabis plant that marketers say can treat a range of ailments without getting users high. Instead, the oil was spiked with a powerful street drug.
Some operators are cashing in on the CBD craze by substituting cheap and illegal synthetic marijuana for natural CBD in vapes and edibles such as gummy bears, an Associated Press investigation has found.
The practice has sent dozens of people like Jenkins to emergency rooms over the last two years. Yet people behind spiked products have operated with impunity, in part because the business has boomed so fast that regulators haven’t caught up while drug enforcement agents have higher priorities.
AP commissioned laboratory testing of the vape oil Jenkins used plus 29 other vape products sold as CBD around the country, with a focus on brands that authorities or users flagged as suspect. Ten of the 30 contained types of synthetic marijuana — drugs commonly known as K2 or spice that have no known medical benefits — while others had no CBD at all.
Among them was Green Machine, a pod compatible with Juul electronic cigarettes that reporters bought in California, Florida and Maryland. Four of those seven pods contained illegal synthetic marijuana, but which chemical varied by flavor and even location of purchase.
“It’s Russian roulette,” said James Neal-Kababick, director of Flora Research Laboratories, which tested the products.
Vaping in general has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks because hundreds of users have developed mysterious lung illnesses, and several have died. The AP’s investigation focused on yet another set of cases, in which psychoactive chemicals are added to products presented as CBD.
The results of AP’s lab testing echo what authorities have found, according to a survey of law enforcement agencies in all 50 states. At least 128 samples out of more than 350 tested by government labs in nine states, nearly all in the South, had synthetic marijuana in products marketed as CBD. Gummy bears and other edibles accounted for 36 of the hits, while nearly all others were vape products. Mississippi authorities also found fentanyl, the powerful opioid involved in about 30,000 overdose deaths last year.
Reporters then bought brands that law enforcement testing or online discussions identified as spiked. Because testing by both authorities and AP focused on suspect products, the results are not representative of the overall market, which includes hundreds of products.
“It’s always been important to me before any success,” she told The Associated Press Thursday at her annual Diamond Ball charity gala. “As a kid, just seeing those commercials on television with the kids in Africa where it’s like, ‘it just takes 10 cent or 25 cents to help somebody,’ . I used to think, ‘When I grow up, I’m a gonna be rich and I’m going to make a lot of money and I could make a lot of 10 cents and a lot of 25 cents.’”
NEW YORK (AP) — Like many kids, Rihanna dreamed of someday growing up to be rich, but helping others was at the forefront of her vision.
She’s made a lot more than that as superstar singer and now fashion and beauty mogul, and with her Clara Lionel Foundation has doled out money around the globe to help support education programs, women’s health and emergency response organizations for people in need.
The foundation named after Rihanna’s grandparents raised more than $5 million Thursday night. Cardi B and Offset, A$AP Rocky, Karlie Kloss, DJ Khaled, 21 Savage, Pharrell Williams and others came out to support the glittering charity dinner, which even featured an impromptu performance by Rihanna and Williams.
“I’m a fan of her energy. She has a beautiful soul,” DJ Khaled said before entering the event at Cipriani’s in downtown Manhattan with his pregnant wife. “In my book, she keeps it mad real . It’s just a beautiful day, we’re putting beautiful energy out there.”
It was the second all-star event Rihanna staged this week. Khaled, Halsey and more turned out for her New York Fashion Week show on Tuesday, an extravaganza for her lingerie line Savage X Fenty that featured musical performances along with a catwalk.
The star wowed on the red carpet dressed in a black velvet turtleneck dress with a flared skirt.
“Just glam. She’s so glamorous, she’s so gorgeous. Anytime I think of Rihanna, I just think of just glam,” said rapper Megan Thee Stallion.
Rihanna told the crowd she was “humbled” by the support for Clara Lionel, and noted that her grandmother Clara Brathwaite, who died seven years ago, would tell her helping others is “about the collective joining forces.”
She told the AP her connection to her grandparents makes the event a sentimental one.
“So these things get really personal, emotional, and I just want to expand this every year to a different cause because I don’t feel like people deserve to be left out and that that’s really the core of the foundation,” she said.
Inside the event, which started two hours late and was hosted by Seth Meyers, stars mingled in a hall that was decorated with a tropical, colorful motif. A$AP Rocky, recently freed after a legal battle in Sweden that saw him behind bars there for weeks, held court at one table as he chatted with 2 Chainz and others; Cardi B bid a very exact $109,000 for a rare copy of a book on Rihanna, along with a two-thousand pound marble stand designed to hold it.
The night was not without some controversy: One of the honorees, activist and journalist Shaun King, has been accused of mishandling money he claims he’s received for various causes he supports. The Clara Lionel Foundation was almost immediately met with backlash after it was announced King would be a Diamond Ball honoree, forcing King to release a 72-page report in an attempt to defend himself against the allegations.
The foundation’s executive director stood by the decision to honor King, who has been a supporter of Clara Lionel.
“We decided to honor Shaun King for a reason, and we decided to honor Shaun King for that same reason tonight,” said Justine Lucas, executive director of the foundation.
King, who defended himself on Twitter just before the event, did not address the allegations as he accepted his honor, instead imploring the crowd to work harder to fight injustice: “It’s not good enough to have good intentions.”
Cardi B stood up for King just before the event.
“One of the main reasons why is so important for me to be here is because Rihanna is honoring Shaun King. A lot of people need to follow Shaun King on Instagram. He protests so much for all minorities, he protests so much for the whole entire world,” said the Grammy-award winning rapper.
Also honored was Mia Mottley, the prime minister of Barbados, where Rihanna was born. Mottley is the first woman to ascend to the position, and Rihanna personally presented her with an award.
Mottley said no matter how global Rihanna is, she always brings Barbados with her.
“Rihanna is one of our citizens of whom we are very, very proud,” Mottley said. “When you come from 166 square miles and you can produce people who make a global impact, it gives your heart a certain amount of warmth.”

In a letter posted to subscribers on its website, Mitch Lowe, CEO of MoviePass, wrote,” In August 2017, MoviePass began a transformation of the movie going industry by introducing its low monthly price subscription service. Since then, others in the industry have followed our lead. ”
NEW YORK (AP) — MoviePass, the movie ticket subscription service that allowed subscribers to buy up to three movie tickets per month for a small fee, shut down Saturday.
Its future is unclear.
Helios and Matheson Analytics, the parent company of MoviePass, said Friday in a release that it was interrupting service for all its subscribers because its efforts to seek financing have not been successful.
It says it’s “unable to predict if or when” MoviePass will continue. The company says it’s planning to study all options including the sale of the company in its entirety.
MoviePass drew in millions of subscribers, initially luring them with a $10 monthly rate. But that proved unsustainable. Because MoviePass typically pays theaters the full cost of tickets — $15 or more in big cities — a single movie can put the service in the red. The company was forced to make changes. Those efforts, however, never stopped the losses.
In a letter posted to subscribers on its website, Mitch Lowe, CEO of MoviePass, wrote,” In August 2017, MoviePass began a transformation of the movie going industry by introducing its low monthly price subscription service. Since then, others in the industry have followed our lead. ”
MoviePass said it will be providing subscribers with “appropriate” refunds for their period of service already paid for. Subscribers will not need to request a refund or contact MoviePass customer service to receive a refund. Subscribers will not be charged during the service interruption, according to the website.
Helios acquired a majority stake in the subscription service in 2017.
This is a very big week for the Nations Capitol. On Thursday, Mayor Bowser will make history by testifying before a House committee looking into making the District the 51st state.
The move comes as a hearing is set for this Thursday in the House of Representatives on the DC Statehood issue. “I was born in this city without voting representation. I will not die that way,” said Bowser. The mayor rode on a bus filled with veterans carrying 51-star flags and shouting 51, 51, 51 hoping to send a message that DC is ready for statehood. It’s believe the bill to make the District the 51st state has enough support in the Democratic controlled House to pass. The battle is expected to be much tougher in the Republican controlled Senate.
Today’s action is just one of several statehood events scheduled for this week. Tuesday, the Mayor will unveil a list of businesses who support DC Statehood followed by a roundtable discussion on Wednesday. Friday, Bowser will unveil art exhibits in all 8 wards and Saturday DC Statehood will be highlighted in the 2019 Fiesta DC Parade.
