Florida Parking Space Killer Sentenced

Killer of black man in parking dispute gets 20 years

A white Florida man who told detectives he was irritated by people who illegally park in handicapped spots was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years in prison for the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man outside a convenience store.
Circuit Judge Joseph Bulone called 49-year-old Michael Drejka a “wanna-be” law enforcement officer and a self-appointed “handicapped parking space monitor.”
Jurors found Drejka guilty of manslaughter in August. Drejka showed no emotion when the judge sentenced him.
Drejka confronted Markeis McGlockton’s girlfriend Britany Jacobs in July 2018 for parking in a handicapped space at a Clearwater convenience store. McGlockton had gone inside the store with his 5-year-old son to buy drinks. As the confrontation continued, a customer went into the store and alerted McGlockton.
Security video shows McGlockton leaving the store and shoving Drejka to the ground. Seconds later, Drejka pulls out a handgun and shoots the 28-year-old McGlockton as he backs away.
Initially, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said he wouldn’t arrest Drejka, saying the shooting was not a crime under the state’s ‘stand your ground’ law, which allows someone to use deadly force if they believe it necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm.
A security video from the store, however, shows McGlockton appearing to step back and turn away as Drejka fires the shot, which strikes McGlockton in the side.
McGlockton’s family hired a lawyer and held a news conference demanding justice, while U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate. Authorities later decided to charge Drejka.
The judge said he found it most ironic that Drejka drove up, illegally parked next to Jacobs’ car and then confronted her about parking illegally in a handicapped space.
“He just seems to come out of nowhere, kind of like a superhero, to see that he enforces the handicapped parking spot,” Bulone said.
Jacobs, along with McGlockton’s parents, spoke before the sentencing.
“There are no words to fully describe what his loss has done to our family,” said Jacobs, who had four children with McGlockton. “Our youngest two children will never have memories of their daddy.”
Defense attorney Theresa Jean-Pierre Coy read a letter from Drejka’s wife in which she defended her husband, saying he was not a bad person. She also wrote that she and other family and friends had received threats and decided to stay away from the courtroom.

Taraji P. Henson Creates ‘Peace Rooms’ For Students Coping With Anxiety And Trauma

The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation is named after her father who suffered from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), after his service in the Vietnam war.

Earlier this year Taraji P. Henson announced the founding of the Boris Lawrence Henson foundation that partners with schools to assist African American children that seek mental health support.

The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation is named after her father who suffered from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), after his service in the Vietnam war. In an interview with NBC, Henson recalls friends and family saying, “You know Boris, he crazy.” Henson addresses the stigma around mental health and says, “In the African American community, it’s taboo. For so long, it’s been looked upon as a weakness in our community.” She is now on a mission to create a new perspective.

Henson has begun two of her initiatives associated with the foundation. The foundation has partnered with The Chicago High School for the Arts, where students can now verbally come together and speak on how they feel about issues on anxiety, depression and trauma. According to Today.com, the foundation has created ‘Peace Rooms,’ that “are painted with encouraging quotes to help students with anxiety who need to step away.” Henson says, “We’re letting them know that they are worthy, and that they matter in a world that’s telling them they don’t right now.” In an Instagram post from Henson, students are seen coming together to paint their vision.

The foundation also offers scholarships to African American students that would like to enter the mental health field and interested in decreasing the gap of African American therapists.

While continuing to push her initiatives and spread awareness on changing the narrative of mental health in the black community, Henson has completed filming for the hit T.V show, Empire, as the series is officially coming to an end.

Activists Demand Prince George’s Co. Officers Wear Body Cams

Community activists say they will continue to push for it until it mandatory for every officer on the police force to have one.

It’s been four years since Prince George’s County Police in conjunction with the University of Maryland began an impact study on the issue.

Today activists say enough time has passed and they want the county council to take up legislation making it a requirement for all officers to do so.

Right now, only 80 of the forces 1,500 officers are wearing body cameras as apart of a 3-year old pilot program. Council Chair Todd Turning is calling for more review versus legislation. the Police Department reportedly supports it and so does County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. Supporters point to other areas that have already made it mandatory like DC and Montgomery County.

Money seems to be a factor for the department says Jennifer Donelan, spokesperson for the Prince George’s County Police Department. She remains hopeful that eventually, they will have the money they need to make sure all officers have the cameras.

A Gang Related Fight At Northwestern Prompts School Leaders To Bring In Police

School officials and the police gang unit are working to hold a parent meeting sometime early next week.

There will be a noticeable police presence at Prince George’s County Northwestern High School in Hyattsville. The precautionary move follows yesterday’s fight at school between two gangs.

Reports indicate that brawl started with one student using a sharp object against another student from a rival gang. It all happened in a stairwell at the school. Two students had to be hospitalized. a 19-year-old who was cut in the chest and a 16-year-old who was injured by his own knife on his hand. Three students were taken into custody. No charges had been filed as of this morning.

Robocalls from the principle went out to parents. It did not, however, mention that it was gang-related. It simply said there had been an “altercation” between several students. An update letter is expected to be sent out today to parents.

Confederate Flag Plaque Removed From MD State House

Maryland Historical Trust removes Confederate flag plaque from state house.

The image of a Confederate flag on a plaque at the Maryland state house is being removed. The Maryland Historical Trust voted last week to remove the flag from a plaque that pays tribute to both Union and Confederate soldiers who served and died in the Civil War. The logo, which includes a Confederate and a U.S. flag, will be changed to an image of the state flag. Maryland House Speaker Adrienne Jones supported removing the entire plaque and voted against the plan to alter it.

A Look Inside Tyler Perry Studios

Contributed by Amber Cooper

Saturday Tyler Perry hosted a grand opening celebration to the official Tyler Perry Film Studios in Atlanta.

The 330 acre film studio consist of sound studios, a white house, a hospital set and a long list of other notable features. This studio location carries great significance as it formally served as a Confederate Army Base. The confederates were in favor of continuing slavery and now this location is owned by one black man.

Stars from every part of the industry came out to celebrate Perry’s great accomplishment. There are 12 sound studios named after a significant actor in the community. Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson, and the late Diahann Carroll are amongst a few stars that were honored.

Perry even went as far as honoring celebs with their own star on the grounds of his studio that were a part of his films. China Anne McClain can be seen in an Instagram post smiling and saying, “I think my huge smile says it all.. To receive this in front of Oprah, Denzel Washington, and multiple others that I have so much respect for… it’s a moment I’ll never forget.”

According to Curbed Atlanta, the location consist of several replicated sets that include a trailer park, luxury hotel lobby, a 16,000-square-foot mansion, a diner and as previously stated, a white house and hospital set. However, the studio is not just for film production. Perry is hoping to start initiatives that will help combat human trafficking, create retail options, and use the venue for large concerts and events.

11 Alive: Where Atlanta Speaks highlight parts of the studio during construction in 2018 and a closer look at the finished product is featured across social media

Perry is officially the only black man in America to outright own their own film studio. Perry will continue to provide opportunities for stars as he stamps his name in the industry.

Biden Calls For Trump Impeachment

For the first time democrat Joe Biden says Donald Trump must be impeached

ROCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is saying for the first time that President Donald Trump must be impeached for abusing the powers of his office to help his own reelection.
Biden made the remarks campaigning Wednesday in New Hampshire.
Biden said Trump is “shooting holes in the Constitution” by asking foreign powers to interfere in the 2020 election. Trump in a July phone call to Ukraine’s leader had asked for “a favor” of investigating Biden and his son, Hunter.
House Democrats have begun impeachment proceedings against Trump based on a rough transcript of the July 25 telephone call.

Biles Sets Record As US Wins World Gymnastics Team Gold

“Every year it feels better and better just because we’re adding to the legacy,” Biles said. “I feel like I never think of records. I just go out there and do what I came to do, which is compete for the country.”

STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Simone Biles won a record 21st medal at the world gymnastics championships on Tuesday as the United States retained its women’s team all-around title.

It was Biles’ 15th career gold and broke a tie with Russian gymnast Svetlana Khorkina for the most medals overall by a woman at the world championships. She’s now two short of Vitaly Scherbo’s all-time record of 23 among men or women.

“Every year it feels better and better just because we’re adding to the legacy,” Biles said. “I feel like I never think of records. I just go out there and do what I came to do, which is compete for the country.”

The U.S. team scored 172.330 points to beat second-place Russia by 5.801 points and win its seventh consecutive team title at an Olympics or world championships.

The reward for winning was a battery-powered medal that lights up when it senses movement. Biles called it “the sickest medal we’ve ever had.”

Biles posted the best individual scores on the vault, balance beam and floor.

“I think if I do the routine that I did tonight I’ll be more than happy” in Thursday’s individual all-around final, she said.

A fall for Sunisa Lee on balance beam in her world championship debut and a fumbled routine from Grace McCallum on the uneven bars left the U.S. with room for improvement, though both were strong on other apparatus.

“It’s just so surreal to come out here and end up on top with the strength of the team that we have, even after having a couple falls out there,” Biles said.

Russia became the first team to get within six points of the U.S. since China at the 2015 world championships, something which pleased Russian gymnast Angelina Melnikova.

“We’re happy that we got second because we can’t battle the Americans just yet, but today the gap was significantly lower than at the last few world championships,” Melnikova said.

Biles said other teams were “most definitely” closing in on the U.S.

“All of the teams have improved their difficulty over the last quad, and I think that’s really exciting to see the strength that they have.”

Italy ended its 69-year wait for a women’s team medal with bronze, as China failed to make the podium for the first time since the 2003 world championships.

China was fourth after a tough day for Liu Tingting, who fell twice on the uneven bars and again on the balance beam.

A fall on the beam mount by Italy’s last gymnast, Elisa Iorio, made for a tense finish but she recovered to score enough to stay ahead of China by 0.536 points.

It was a big recovery for Italy, which qualified in last place for the final.

“The goal for today was just to do better than qualification and how it goes, it goes,” Italian gymnast Giorgia Villa said through a translator.

Tamron Hall Honors Slain Sister, Victim Of Domestic Violence

Tamron Hall and nephew Leroy Moore opened up 15 years later about the death of sister and mother, Renate, who was killed by her abusive ex.

Contributed by Nadira Jamerson

October marks National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In support of this, talk show host Tamron Hall shared a story about her sister, Renate, losing her life to domestic violence.

In a recent airing Tamron invited her nephew, Leroy Moore, as a guest speaker on her NBC talk show. This was the first time Moore publicly talked about the murder of his mother since 2004. During the show, Tamron spoke about her guilt following her sisters murder.

She said “I carried much guilt for many years believing I had abandoned my sister and that I was more worried about career than family.”

Moore spoke about how domestic violence is not always blatant. Many times family members can be being abused without anyone realizing.

Morre shared “When I look back she would call me and ask, ‘Hey can you mae it down for the weaken?’ and every imd I drove down there would always be tension in the household and that’s kinda when I look back I realized she was calling me down there to avert that tension that was in the household.”

Both Tamron and Moore explained that they had never before spoken about the murder publicly because they felt that they were in the wrong for not doing enough to save their sister and mother from this tragedy. Although the case still remains unsolved today, both Tamron and Moore believe that Renate lost her life to domestic violence.

Tamron has since started the Tamron Renate Fund to collect donations in support for any women who may be suffering through domestic violence.

Olympic Sprinter Allyson Felix Broke Bolt’s Record Months After Giving Birth

This victory comes a year after being dropped by Nike. In an op-ed article in The New York Times, Felix expresses her feelings towards the brand wanting her to take a 70% pay cut. It seemed that Nike had worries that a pregnancy would decline her performance as an athlete, after declining to agree to a contract to not punish her.

Ten months after giving birth, Allyson Felix returns to the track breaking records.

During the mixed-gender 4x400m relay race, USA Olympic Sprinter Felix broke Usain Bolt’s record by winning her 12th gold medal. According to Fox40, Felix now holds the record for the most gold medals at the track and field World Championships. Felix took to Twitter to share her reaction, posting a photo with her gold medals saying, “Humbled.”

Felix’s article led to Nike changing its policy on pregnant athletes. The New York Times states “Nike said it would waive performance-pay reductions for 12 months for athletes ‘who decide to have a baby,’ promising to add terms that reinforce this policy into the company’s contracts with sponsored athletes.” Felix dedication to change will surely help female athletes in the future.

Felix has now signed a new sponsorship deal with Athleta and is continuing to win gold medals.

New Trump Impeachment Poll

Poll: Most Americans Favor Impeachment Inquiry

(Washington, DC) — Most Americans support the impeachment inquiry of President Trump. According to a new Washington Post/Schar School poll, 58-percent of Americans say the House was right to open the inquiry. Only 38-percent oppose it. Nearly half of Americans, 49-percent, say the President should be impeached and removed from office. Trump is facing criticisms that he used the power of his office to encourage foreign countries to open up investigations against a political rival. Trump has said he is only interested in rooting out corruption, and he was not thinking of next year’s election. The troubling number for the President is more Republicans are turning against him. The poll found that 30-percent of Republicans support the inquiry, and 20-percent support removing him from office.

Could DC Raise Tax On Sugary Drinks?

DC Council Mulling Sugary Drink Tax

(Washington, DC) — The DC Council is considering one of the highest taxes on sugary drinks in the country. A proposed bill would impose a one-and-a-half-cent per-ounce tax on sugary beverages. The tax applies to sugary drinks with any natural common sweeteners, including Gatorade, sweetened iced coffee and soda. The bill would replace the city’s recently passed two-percent sales tax on soft drinks.

The current law makes it illegal to discriminate against a worker based on sex. The question is does the definition of “Sex” apply to gender identity and sexual orientation.

It stems from a case in Georgia where a Gerald Bostock was fired from his county job after his agency found he had joined a gay softball team.

Witness In Ex-Dallas Officer’s Murder Trial Shot And Killed

“We all are,” Merritt said. “Joshua Brown was a key witness in the murder of Botham Jean that helped put Amber Guyger away. We need answers.”

DALLAS (AP) — A witness in the murder trial of a white Dallas police officer who fatally shot her black neighbor has been killed in a shooting, the Dallas Morning News reported, citing authorities.

The newspaper reported that authorities said Joshua Brown, who lived in the same apartment complex as Amber Guyger and Botham Jean, was shot and killed Friday in Dallas. Guyger was still in her police uniform after a long shift when, according to her trial testimony, she mistook Jean’s apartment for her own one floor below and shot him after pushing open his unlocked door and thinking he was a burglar.

Brown, 28, testified in Guyger’s trial about the September 2018 night that Jean was killed, saying he was in a hallway on the fourth floor, where he and Jean lived. He said he heard what sounded like “two people meeting by surprise” and then two gunshots.

Brown, who became emotional at times and used his T-shirt and tissue to wipe his tears, said he had met Jean, a 26-year-old accountant from the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia, for the first time earlier that day.

Guyger, 31, was fired from the department soon after the shooting. She was convicted Tuesday and sentenced the next day to 10 years in prison.

The newspaper did not cite authorities by name for confirmation of Brown’s death. A Dallas police spokesman on Saturday would not confirm to The Associated Press that it was Brown who was shot Friday. He said the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office would determine the identification Sunday.

Police said in a news release that they responded to the shooting shortly after 10:30 p.m. Friday at an apartment complex different from the one where Jean was killed. They said several witnesses flagged officers down when they arrived and directed them to an apartment parking lot where the man who was shot was lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Witnesses told police they heard several gunshots and saw a silver four-door sedan speeding out of the parking lot, according to the police news release.

Lee Merritt, a lawyer for the Jean family, said in a tweet Saturday that he spoke with Brown’s mother and that she is “devastated.”

“We all are,” Merritt said. “Joshua Brown was a key witness in the murder of Botham Jean that helped put Amber Guyger away. We need answers.”

In a statement he included with the tweet, he said authorities have not identified a suspect or determined a motive.

“Brown deserves the same justice he sought to ensure the Jean family,” Merritt said in the statement.

Dallas County prosecutor Jason Hermus said Brown “bravely came forward to testify when others wouldn’t,” according to the newspaper.

“If we had more people like him, we would have a better world,” said Hermus, who was lead prosecutor in the case.

Tyler Perry Christens New Studio With Help Of Oprah, Others

“I think it’s pivotal in everything that we’ve done, everything that we’re doing still, that we continue to try to motivate and inspire people,” Perry told The Associated Press as he shook hands with well-wishers.

ATLANTA (AP) — Tyler Perry officially christened his massive new film studio Saturday, beaming as his fellow entertainment industry luminaries descended on Atlanta and strode a red carpet to his sprawling complex for an opening gala.

The attendees warmly greeted Perry, a man who had once been homeless and yet now helmed his own studio, one of the nation’s largest.

“I think it’s pivotal in everything that we’ve done, everything that we’re doing still, that we continue to try to motivate and inspire people,” Perry told The Associated Press as he shook hands with well-wishers.

And there were plenty there to congratulate him. Oprah Winfrey, Spike Lee, Cicely Tyson, Samuel L. Jackson, Halle Berry and others all helped Perry christen his new facility, a 330-acre (134-hectare) studio that once served as a Confederate army base.

Winfrey praised Perry and told the AP the new studio head is a force to be reckoned with.

“He didn’t wait for other people to validate or to say you should go this way or that way. He said I’m going to create my own way and as we can see here, become a force for himself,” Winfrey said.

The team has set up a 1 O’clock press conference. Reportedly Offensive line coach Bill Callahan will take over until a new coach is hired.

The team released this message.

?Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility. Moving forward we are committed to doing all that we can collectively as an organization to turn things around and give our Redskins fans and alumni a team they can be proud of in 2019 and beyond.?

Are Their Limits To Forgiveness?

In the wake of the murder of Botham Jean and the sentencing of Amber Guyger, are there limits to forgiveness?

It was the surprising courtroom embrace seen across the nation.  The brother of Botham Jean… hugging and offering forgiveness to the former Dallas cop convicted of murder.  Brandt Jean told Amber Guyger he wanted her to give her life to God during victim impact statements this  week. This act and others in the courtroom this week has raise emotional questions about forgiveness.  Are there limits… particularly in a case like this?

Entertainment Pioneer Diahann Carroll Has Died

Diahann Carroll, Oscar-nominated, pioneering actress, dies

NEW YORK (AP) — Diahann Carroll, the Oscar-nominated actress and singer who won critical acclaim as the first black woman to star in a non-servant role in a TV series as “Julia,” has died. She was 84.
Carroll’s daughter, Susan Kay, told The Associated Press her mother died Friday in Los Angeles of cancer.

During her long career, Carroll earned a Tony Award for the musical “No Strings” and an Academy Award nomination for best actress for “Claudine.”
But she was perhaps best known for her pioneering work on “Julia.” Carroll played Julia Baker, a nurse whose husband had been killed in Vietnam, in the groundbreaking situation comedy that aired from 1968 to 1971.
“Diahann Carroll walked this earth for 84 years and broke ground with every footstep. An icon. One of the all-time greats,” director Ava DuVernay wrote on Twitter. “She blazed trails through dense forests and elegantly left diamonds along the path for the rest of us to follow. Extraordinary life. Thank you, Ms. Carroll.”
Although she was not the first black woman to star in her own TV show (Ethel Waters played a maid in the 1950s series “Beulah”), she was the first to star as someone other than a servant.
NBC executives were wary about putting “Julia” on the network during the racial unrest of the 1960s, but it was an immediate hit.
It had its critics, though, including some who said Carroll’s character, who is the mother of a young son, was not a realistic portrayal of a black American woman in the 1960s.
“They said it was a fantasy,” Carroll recalled in 1998. “All of this was untrue. Much about the character of Julia I took from my own life, my family.”
Not shy when it came to confronting racial barriers, Carroll won her Tony portraying a high-fashion American model in Paris who has a love affair with a white American author in the 1959 Richard Rodgers musical “No Strings.” Critic Walter Kerr described her as “a girl with a sweet smile, brilliant dark eyes and a profile regal enough to belong on a coin.”
She appeared often in plays previously considered exclusive territory for white actresses: “Same Time, Next Year,” ”Agnes of God” and “Sunset Boulevard” (as faded star Norma Desmond, the role played by Gloria Swanson in the 1950 film.)
“I like to think that I opened doors for other women, although that wasn’t my original intention,” she said in 2002.
Her film career was sporadic. She began with a secondary role in “Carmen Jones” in 1954 and five years later appeared in “Porgy and Bess,” although her singing voice was dubbed because it wasn’t considered strong enough for the Gershwin opera. Her other films included “Goodbye Again,” ”Hurry Sundown,” ”Paris Blues,” and “The Split.”
The 1974 film “Claudine” provided her most memorable role. She played a hard-bitten single mother of six who finds romance in Harlem with a garbage man played by James Earl Jones.
In the 1980s, she joined in the long-running prime-time soap opera “Dynasty” as Dominique Deveraux, the glamorous half-sister of Blake Carrington; her physical battles with Alexis Carrington, played by Joan Collins, were among fan highlights. More recently, she had a number of guest shots and small roles in TV series, including playing the mother of Isaiah Washington’s character, Dr. Preston Burke, on “Grey’s Anatomy” and a stretch on the TV show “White Collar” as the widow June.
She also returned to her roots in nightclubs. In 2006, she made her first club appearance in New York in four decades, singing at Feinstein’s at the Regency. Reviewing a return engagement in 2007, a New York Times critic wrote that she sang “Both Sides Now” with “the reflective tone of a woman who has survived many severe storms and remembers every lightning flash and thunderclap.”
Carol Diann Johnson was born in New York City and attended the High School for the Performing Arts. Her father was a subway conductor and her mother a homemaker.
She began her career as a model, but a prize from “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” TV show led to nightclub engagements.
In her 1998 memoir “Diahann,” Carroll traced her turbulent romantic life, which included liaisons with Harry Belafonte, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Sammy Davis Jr., Sidney Poitier and David Frost. She even became engaged to Frost, but the engagement was canceled.
An early marriage to nightclub owner Monte Kay resulted in Carroll’s only child, Suzanne, as well as a divorce. She also divorced her second husband, retail executive Freddie Glusman, later marrying magazine editor Robert DeLeon, who died.
Her most celebrated marriage was in 1987, to singer Vic Damone, and the two appeared together in nightclubs. But they separated in 1991 and divorced several years later.
After she was treated for breast cancer in 1998, she spoke out for more money for research and for free screening for women who couldn’t afford mammograms.
“We all look forward to the day that mastectomies, chemotherapy and radiation are considered barbaric,” Carroll told a gathering in 2000.
Besides her daughter, she is survived by grandchildren August and Sydney.

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay is continuing to push for diversity and inclusivity in the film world with her new series ARRAY 360.

The “When They See Us” director will be showcasing films that were created by or feature women of color. Earlier this year, DuVernay opened the “Amanda Theater,” named after her late aunt, Denise Amanda Sexton, at her ARRAY campus in Historic Filipinotown, L.A. The theater itself is also a work of art.

“Look, we’re black ladies. This is our screening room. We want hot pink chairs? We’re going to have them.” DuVernay told the L.A. Times.

The 50 seat auditorium will spend the fall (September 27- November 2) on the ARRAY 360 program that is set to become an annual event.

“In addition to paying tribute to exquisite filmmakers, some of whose work has gone under-appreciated, our ARRAY 360 series strives to connect with audiences that don’t always see themselves reflected on screen,” Series curator Mercedes Cooper told Deadline.

Each weekend will have it’s own program theme: Filipinx Film Fiesta, Centerpiece, Reclaiming Narratives, The Broad at Array, John Singleton Retrospective, Diop Dynasty, and Visionary Varda. Some weekends also will also have the directors present for discussion.

All tickets are free to the public with advanced registration.

Mathew Knowles Diagnosed With Breast Cancer

Knowles said, “The first calls I made were to my kids, and my former wife, Tina. My wife, Gena, already knew; she went with me to the exam.”

Mathew Knowles, the father of singers Beyonce and Solange, took to Good Morning America to reveal his breast cancer diagnosis.

Knowles sat down with Michael Strahan, co-anchor on “Good Morning America,” on Wednesday morning to discuss his diagnosis. He began to notice dots of blood staining his white shirts over a period of time. After brushing it off the first couple days, he realized it was time to go see a doctor. According to “Good Morning America,” Knowles received a smear that was nonconclusive and then decided to get a mammogram that revealed his cancer.

Knowles said, “The first calls I made were to my kids, and my former wife, Tina. My wife, Gena, already knew; she went with me to the exam.”

Knowles has a history of breast cancer running in his family, so it was vital to make his loved ones aware. During the interview, he mentions that his mother’s sister died of breast cancer and his mother sister’s two daughters also died of breast cancer. Unfortunately, he has been surrounded around this disease all of his life and know that his children have a high chance of being affected.

October is officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Knowles is specifically urging black men to get tested. The key for Knowles is “early detection.” According to cancer.org, there will be about 2,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer for men in the United States in 2019.

Knowles is now focused on leading a healthier lifestyle and doing all that he can to spread awareness.

Willow And Jaden Smith Grace Cover Of Vogue Italia

Jaden and Willow Smith were featured on the latest cover of Vogue Italia to highlight how their activism has been making progressive changes throughout the U.S.

Contributed by Nadira Jamerson

Willow Smith and Jaden Smith were featured on the latest cover of Vogue Italia. Their interviews included with the shoot focused on how the siblings are working to use their fame and social influence to better the world community. Jaden Smith spoke about how the siblings are specifically working to provide clean water to Flint, MI through JUST water and their 501CTHREE community organization.

During their interview with Vogue Italia Willow Smith said, “There’s no point to having all of these resources and all of these eyes on you if you are not expressing and addressing the real problems in our world. For me, I feel like the emotionality of humans and how we relate to one another is so important. In the face of racism and sexism, we have to learn to sufficiently stand up for ourselves. And it’s on our generation to make sure that we have a sustainable planet and we are making the correct steps to survive and reverse the damage that has already been done. I constantly think about this, and my coping mechanism is to find more ways to help more creativity and more community in order to prevail. Life is precious and short and both of us want to do whatever we can do to help. The gratitude I feel is for the chance we’ve been given to participate and that’s just as much down to the goodness of the people who are listening as to the platform we’ve been given.”

Jaden Smith explained, “I feel that we just try to set a good example, as much as it is possible, to the generation of young people who are looking at what we are doing. That’s represented in JUST and 501CTHREE, which embody our commitment to creating awareness around the challenges humans face in terms of sustainable energy, water and food – now and in the future. One of the first projects of 501CTHREE is to install water filtration systems for communities in Flint, MI and Los Angeles, here in California. Or the two pilot programs of food trucks for the Skid Row community in L.A. that are giving out 500 meals a day. We are trying to do things in a way that educates people who are looking to us about what’s going on in the world. And it’s what Willow does with our mom and grandmother with Red Table Talk – facing and addressing sexism and racism.”

In an Instagram post following the story, Willow called Jaden her “Partner in Justice.”

Extraordinary act of mercy: Brother of Botham Jean hugs and forgives Amber Guyger after 10-year sentence imposed

https://abcnews.go.com/US/jury-deciding-sentence-police-officer-amber-guyger-wrong/story?id=66002182

The sentence appeared to initially disappoint the family of the victim, Botham Jean, who had hoped for far harsher punishment for Guyger. Several members of the family broke down in tears, shaking their heads as if in disbelief of the jury’s decision.

But Jean’s 18-year-old brother, Brandt Jean, took the witness stand and spoke to Guyger, saying, “I know if you go to God and ask him, he will forgive you.”

“I love you just like anyone else and I’m not going to hope you rot and die,” Brandt Jean told Guyger. “I personally want the best for you. I wasn’t going to say this in front of my family, I don’t even want you to go to jail. I want the best for you because I know that’s exactly what Botham would want for you. Give your life to Christ. I think giving your life to Christ is the best thing Botham would want for you.”

Brandt Jean then asked Kemp if he could give Guyger a hug, a request the judge granted.
