Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Under Fire, Senate Democrats Block Trump Wall Money

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Under Fire. Senate Democrats Block Trump Wall Money. GM Officials Say They’ll Find Those Behind Racial Harassment. Wizards Welcome Warriors Tonight.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Under Fire

(Washington, DC) Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas is stepping down from her position as chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation in addition to leaving her post as leader of one of the House Judiciary Committee’s key subcommittees. The moves Wednesday come after a lawsuit from a former employee who complained that her sexual assault complaint had been mishandled. In a statement last week, Jackson Lee’s office denied allegations that it retaliated against the woman who filed the lawsuit.

Senate Democrats Block Trump Wall Money

(Washington, DC) Senate Democrats have blocked President Donald Trump’s request for $5.7 billion to construct his long-sought wall along the U.S-Mexico border, as a partial government shutdown continues for a 34th day.
The partisan 51-47 tally fell well short of the 60 votes required to advance the measure over a Democratic filibuster. The $350 billion-plus government-wide funding bill represented the first attempt by Republicans controlling the Senate to reopen the government since the shutdown began.
The demise of the measure and likely defeat of a Democratic alternative Thursday comes despite increasing urgency felt by lawmakers to end the shutdown. It leaves Washington with no obvious path out of the impasse despite mounting pressure.
The measure would have also provided three years of continued protection against deportation for 700,000 immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

GM Officials Say They’ll Find Those Behind Racial Harassment

(Toledo, OH) — General Motors executives say they’re working to find and fire the people who orchestrated racial harassment at Ohio’s Toledo Powertrain plant. The automaker responded yesterday to Reverend Jesse Jackson’s meeting with black employees, saying there is zero tolerance for hostile work environments. Several black employees have sued GM, claiming the company ignored nooses, swastikas and slurs from co-workers for several years.

Wizards Welcome Warriors Tonight

(Washington, DC) — The Wizards welcome Steph Curry and the defending champion Warriors to D.C tonight. Washington has won four of its last five games to improve to 20-and-26. Golden State has won eight straight games and leads the West at 33-and-14.

What Happened to The Art of the Deal?

President Trump has boasted that he’s an expert deal maker. Why is there no deal yet on the partial government shutdown? What goes into real deal making?

For the past 33 days of the partial federal government shutdown, there’s been no deal and no end in sight.  Even if the President and democratic leaders sit down to talk it out… what might that negotiation look like?  What does the art of negotiation really mean?

Pelosi has edge over Trump on budget negotiations, CBS News Poll Shows

Seven in 10 Americans don’t think the issue of a border wall is worth a government shutdown, which they say is now having a negative impact on the country. But partisans don’t want their own side to budge: 65 percent of Republicans say President Trump should refuse a budget unless it includes wall funding, and 69 percent of Democrats think congressional Democrats should keep refusing to fund it.

Among Americans overall, and including independents, more want to see Mr. Trump give up wall funding than prefer the congressional Democrats agree to wall funding. Comparably more Americans feel House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is handling negotiations better than the president is so far.

Mayor Bowser and DC Housing Finance Agency Announce New Mortgage Assistance Program for Furloughed Federal Employees

As Unprecedented Federal Shutdown Continues, $9 Million Program Will Help District Residents Avoid Mortgage Delinquency

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, as the partial federal government shutdown extends into its second month, Mayor Bowser and the DC Housing Finance Agency (DCHFA) have announced a new program to provide mortgage assistance to District homeowners who are furloughed federal government employees. Through the District of Columbia Mortgage Assistance Program (DC MAP), financial assistance will be made available to qualified homeowners in the form of a zero-interest, recourse loan. DCHFA has allocated $9,000,000 for DC MAP and qualified homeowners will be able to receive up to $5,000 a month.

To qualify for DC MAP, a homeowner must:

  • be a furloughed full-time federal government employee;
  • maintain their primary residence within the District;
  • have documentation to reflect applicant is not eligible for forbearance through their current lender/servicer;
  • reflect satisfactory 12 month payment history prior to furlough (from January 2018 through December 2018 – no more than 1 x 30 day late);
  • have first trust mortgage loan current through December 31, 2018; and
  • be at-risk of first trust mortgage default potentially leading to foreclosure.

“At DCHFA we recognize that retaining homeownership is as important as becoming a homeowner.  We created DC MAP to provide emergency mortgage support at this urgent time for District homeowners that are experiencing an unanticipated financial hardship due to the partial shutdown of the federal government.  With DC MAP we want to help DC residents across all Wards keep the homes that they have worked so hard to purchase and maintain their good payment history,” stated Todd A. Lee, DCHFA Executive Director and CEO.

Borrowers who utilize this program must repay the full amount within sixty days of the date of the government reopening or when back pay is made available to the borrower, whichever is earlier.

Starting Friday, January 25, homeowners can call 1-833-429-0537 to begin the DC MAP application process. Financial assistance will be granted on a first come first serve basis until the program allocation has been exhausted.

Cohen Delays Testimony to Congress… Says President Threatened Him, Trump Tells Pelosi He Is Coming For State Of Union Address

Former Trump Attorney Michael Cohen Delays Testimony to Congress After Being Threatened By the President

(Washington, DC) — President Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen is delaying his testimony before Congress due to “ongoing threats” against his family. Cohen’s attorney Lanny Davis released a statement saying the family has received threats “from President Trump and Rudy Giuliani, as recently as this weekend.” Cohen was scheduled to testify publicly before the House Oversight Committee on February 7th. A source close to Cohen tells NBC News that “the threats are real” and “Trump knows what he’s doing.”

Trump Tells Pelosi He Is Coming For State Of Union Address

(Washington, DC) — Nancy Pelosi’s original invitation for President Trump to deliver the State of the Union address is being accepted. The president issued a letter to the House Speaker saying he will be at the Capitol next Tuesday night to deliver the annual speech. He wrote he accepted Pelosi’s original invitation and plans to fulfill that obligation. Pelosi recently asked Trump to postpone the speech until after the partial government shutdown is resolved. Trump’s letter also plays down Pelosi’s concerns about security as the shutdown drags on.

White Supremacist Pleads Guilty To NYC Sword Killing

(New York, NY) — A white supremacist is pleading guilty to a sword killing in New York City. James Jackson apparently was a man on a mission when he traveled to Manhattan from Baltimore in 2017. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance says Jackson wanted to purge the earth of black people and admitted stabbing 66-year-old Timothy Caughman to death with a sword in a random street attack. Vance tweeted that if Jackson is convicted, it would mark the first-ever conviction of a white supremacist on terrorism charges in New York City history.

No Sweethearts Candies This Valentine’s Day

(Boston, MA) — Valentine’s Day will be missing a traditional sweet treat this year. The candy company that has minted Sweethearts for decades went bankrupt and closed last July, putting a temporary end to an era. The New England Confection Company better known as NECCO was bought out by Spangler Candy Company, who intend to bring back the conversational Sweethearts candies back next season. CandyStore.com says NECCO produced around eight-billion of the candy hearts every year.

Nurse Arrested In Case Of Incapacitated Woman Who Gave Birth

Investigators arrested 36-year-old Nathan Sutherland, a licensed practical nurse, on suspicion of one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse, Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said.

PHOENIX (AP) — A licensed practical nurse has been arrested on a charge of sexually assaulting an incapacitated woman who gave birth last month at a long-term health care facility, Phoenix police said Wednesday.

Investigators arrested 36-year-old Nathan Sutherland, a licensed practical nurse, on suspicion of one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse, Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said.

Sutherland was one of the woman’s caregivers at the Hacienda HealthCare facility and he was charged after authorities obtained a court order to take a DNA sample from him, which was compared to DNA of the baby boy, said police spokesman Tommy Thompson.

Sutherland declined to speak with police, Thompson said.

The 29-year-old victim has been incapacitated since the age of 3 and gave birth at the facility on Dec. 29.

Employees said they had no idea she was pregnant. As her guardian, the woman’s mother was required to submit an annual report to the court that included results of a medical exam.

Police had said they were collecting DNA from all male employees at the center.

Hacienda HealthCare on Sunday announced that one doctor who had cared for the woman resigned and another was suspended.

The woman’s parents on Tuesday through their attorney disputed characterizations that their daughter is comatose.

They described her as being intellectually disabled because of seizures in early childhood. While she doesn’t speak, she has some mobility in her limbs, head and neck. She also responds to sound and can make facial gestures.

The Senate Looks To Vote On Two Bills To Reopen The Government, Furloughed Tenants Are Told Pay Up Or Be Evicted

The Senate looks to vote on two bills to reopen the government…

Lawmakers in the Senate are taking today to sure up support for one of two competing bills that could reopen the government. Today makes the 33rd day of the historic partial government shutdown over the President’s border wall.

One of the bill lawmakers expect to vote on tomorrow supports President Trump’s weekend proposal. The bill would give Trump the money he wants for his border wall in exchange for temporary protection for DACA recipients. The second bill before lawmakers is one that House Democrats approved earlier this year. The measure would fund the Federal Government until February 8th. It would give lawmakers more time to work out a budget deal. This plan, however, does not provide funding for Trump’s wall.

Furlough tenants are told pay up or be evicted…

Several furlough employee’s who live at the Avanti Apartments in District Heights are reporting that they have received letters of evictions. The letter given to the out of work tenants suggests that they clear their bank accounts, empty their pockets and pay their rent. The letter states if a tenant owes $1,500 they have to pay now or be evicted.

Residents say they were shocked by the insensitive and unprofessional letter sent out. Many of them admit that they are already dealing with the stress of not receiving a paycheck in a month and mounting bills.

It’s important to note anyone who is affected by the now 33-day old shutdown should know financial help is available through the Catholic Charities and The Salvation Army.

DC Council Overrides Metro Fare Evasion Bill, New Orleans Attorney Files Lawsuit Over NFC Championship Game No-Call

DC Council Overrides Metro Fare Evasion Bill. Student Stabbed Inside Petworth Charter School. Supreme Court Delivers Blow To Transgender Rights. New Orleans Attorney Files Lawsuit Over NFC Championship Game No-Call.

DC Council Overrides Metro Fare Evasion Bill

The DC Council has voted to override the Mayor’s veto of the “Fare Evasion Decriminalization Act of 2018”. The vote was 11-2.  The bill will become law after congressional review.  The bill will make fare evasion or Metro “gate jumping” a civil fine instead of a criminal offense.

Student Stabbed Inside Petworth Charter School

(Washington, DC) — DC police are investigating the stabbing of a 15-year-old boy inside a charter school this morning. Police say the victim was stabbed around 10:30 a.m. at EL Haynes Public Charter School in the 45-hundred block of Kansas Avenue, Northwest. It happened after a dispute between two students in a bathroom. A suspect has been arrested and the victim is in stable condition.

Supreme Court Delivers Blow To Transgender Rights

(Washington, DC) — The U.S. Supreme Court is delivering a victory to President Trump and a blow to transgender rights. The high court allowed the Pentagon to start enforcing the Trump administration’s order to limit transgender military service while the issue plays out in lower courts. The Supreme Court may not get the case until sometime next year. The Pentagon could decide to do nothing until the high court resolves the issue.

New Orleans Attorney Files Lawsuit Over NFC Championship Game No-Call

(New Orleans, LA) — A lawsuit against the NFL is being filed by an attorney in New Orleans over the controversial no call play at the end of the game. Frank D’Amico Junior, who calls himself “The Strong Arm,” has brought his case to the Orleans Parish Civil District Court on behalf of two Saints season ticket holders in addition to Saints fans across the nation. The suit seeks to compel the league’s commissioner Roger Goodell into court to explain why he will not enforce a league rule that would allow him to reverse the outcome of the game or reschedule a rematch. D’Amico is requesting an expedited hearing on a Rule to Show Cause motion in the case next Monday, January 28th.

Boys School Shuts Down Amid Fallout Over Washington Videos

“Let’s create space for the teaching of tolerance to happen,” his statement said, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer. “I have faith that human beings can use a moment like this to find a way to gain understanding from one another.”

COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky boys’ school shut down its campus on Tuesday as a precaution and a small protest was held outside their diocese as fallout continued over an encounter involving white teenagers, Native American marchers and a black religious sect outside the Lincoln Memorial last week.

President Donald Trump tweeted early Tuesday that the students at Covington Catholic High School “have become symbols of Fake News and how evil it can be” but says he hopes the teens will use the attention for good, and “maybe even to bring people together.”

The recorded images that initially generated outrage on social media were tightly focused on the students wearing “Make America Great Again” hats who seemed to laugh derisively as they surrounded an elderly Native American beating a drum.

Longer videos from wider perspectives emerged later over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. They revealed that the drummer — Omaha Nation elder Nathan Phillips — had intervened between the boys and the religious sect, at a moment when the teens seemed to be getting rowdier and the black street preacher with a megaphone who had been making racist statements against both groups was escalating his rhetoric.

Soon, all sides were pointing fingers , speaking their own truths about feeling victimized and misunderstood.

“We just don’t know what the volatility of the situation is with these people that react and they don’t know the full story. And it’s very scary,” Jill Hamlin of Cincinnati, who was there to chaperone as the boys attended an anti-abortion rally, told FOX News Tuesday morning.

The American Indian Movement Chapter of Indiana and Kentucky held a small protest outside the Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington, with activists outnumbered by the media. Meanwhile, the school’s principal, Robert Rowe, said that “after meeting with local authorities,” they decided to close the campus “to ensure the safety of our students, faculty and staff.”

Phillips, for his part, offered Tuesday to come to the boys’ campus and join with them in a dialogue about cultural appropriation, racism and the importance of listening to and respecting diverse cultures.

“Let’s create space for the teaching of tolerance to happen,” his statement said, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer. “I have faith that human beings can use a moment like this to find a way to gain understanding from one another.”

The diocese, which issued a weekend statement criticizing the boys’ behavior, was unavailable for comment Tuesday morning. Both the school and the diocese websites were taken offline.

Kentucky’s governor also weighed in, saying he was saddened by what happened.

“It was amazing how quick those who preach tolerance and non-judgment of others were to judge and label some high school students based on partial information,” Gov. Matt Bevin tweeted. “In a world where we have a wealth of information at our fingertips, we have increasingly little discernment and wisdom… Facts matter…The truth matters…Context matters… A little more genuine caring for one another and a little less digital vitriol would be good for all.”

The District’s Richard Wright Public Charter School in Southeast is stepping up to help federal and contractor workers affected by the partial government shutdown.

Today from 4 pm to 7 pm at Richard Wright Public Charter School, 770 M Street, Southeast, Washington DC the school will provide a free dinner to government workers. You will need to have your government ID. Today’s event is entitled “We Are One”.

DC City Council looks to override Mayor’s Veto on fare evaders…

The DC City Council is looking a holding a vote today to override Mayor Muriel Bowser’s veto of a bill that would make Metro fare evasion a civil offense. As it stands now it is a criminal offense punishable by a hefty fine and jail time.

Mayor Bowser believes the change would make more people avoid paying to use Metro and it would hit Metro financially even harder than it is already. Metro says they loose almost $25 million dollars a year due to people using Metro but not paying.

The bill, which was proved 10-2 in a vote last month is called Fare Evasion Decriminalization Amendment Act of 2018. If approved violators would be given $50 tickets instead of a fine and jail time. The City Council needs nine votes to override the Mayor’s veto.

Chris Brown is detained in Paris on rape allegations…

Grammy Award winning and Virginia native R&B Singer Chris Brown is back in trouble. This time it’s in Paris. French officials say they have detained Brown following allegations of rape made by a 24-year old woman. The victim claims it happened on January 15th in his hotel suite.

According to reports officials have two more days to either charge him or let him go. Brown and two others, one being his body guard are being questioned and held by police.

Brown has a history of violence. He even has one felony conviction for assaulting his then girlfriend singer Rihanna that dates back to 2009.

Singer Chris Brown Detained In Paris After Rape Complaint

The Grammy Award-winning singer was detained Monday on potential charges of aggravated rape and drug infractions and remained in custody Tuesday, a judicial official said. Investigators have another two days to decide whether to let him go or file preliminary charges.

PARIS (AP) — U.S. singer Chris Brown and two other people are in custody in Paris after a woman filed a rape complaint, French officials said Tuesday.

The Grammy Award-winning singer was detained Monday on potential charges of aggravated rape and drug infractions and remained in custody Tuesday, a judicial official said. Investigators have another two days to decide whether to let him go or file preliminary charges.

Brown’s publicists at Sony Music would not comment Tuesday on the complaint or say what Brown, 29, was doing in Paris. His U.S. attorney, Mark Geragos, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Brown has been in repeated legal trouble since pleading guilty to the felony assault in 2009 of his then-girlfriend, Rihanna. He completed his probation in that case in 2015, but has continued to have run-ins with police.

The woman who filed the Paris complaint said she met Brown and his friends overnight Jan. 15-16 at the club Le Crystal in the 8th arrondissement near the Champs-Elysees, and then they all went to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel near the Concorde Plaza in central Paris, according to the official.

The Mandarin Oriental would not comment on the investigation, and Le Crystal could not immediately be reached. There was no unusual activity outside either site.

One of Brown’s bodyguards is among the others detained in the Paris investigation, according to the official. They are being held by judicial police in the 17th arrondissement of northwest Paris, the official said.

Neither official was authorized to be publicly named discussing the investigation.

The detention was originally reported by French gossip magazine Closer.

Brown won a Grammy Award in 2011 for best R&B album for “F.A.M.E.” and was repeatedly nominated for other works. He is best-known for hits in the 2000s such as “Run It” and “Kiss Kiss.”

He released a new single earlier this month and has a new album coming this year. Six of his albums have gone platinum.

He retains a hard core of fans, including nearly 50 million followers on Instagram. He posted an Instagram photo Monday from Paris appearing to show him at a nightclub, among several recent posts. Followers responded with mixed messages to the rape accusation.

It’s the latest legal trouble for Brown, who was arrested at the end of a concert last year to face a felony battery charge involving a nightclub photographer.

Kamala Harris Discusses Presidential Run At Howard University

(Washington, DC) — Newly-announced 2020 presidential candidate Kamala Harris says she’s willing to fight hard for the presidency. The California Democratic Senator spoke to reporters at Howard University in DC today, saying the core of her campaign is the American people. Harris said she loves her country and feels a sense of responsibility to “stand up and fight for the best of who we are.” When asked about the government shutdown, the Democrat put the blame on President Trump, saying he’s holding the American people hostage over a vanity project called the wall, while federal workers are trying to find a way to pay their rent. Harris officially announced her bid for president this morning.

Biden Attacks Trump At MLK Breakfast

(Washington, DC) — Former Vice President Joe Biden is slamming President Trump and his comments about the deadly white-supremacist march in Charlottesville in 2017. Vote Expected As Shutdown Drags On

(Washington, DC) — A vote on President Trump’s border proposal is expected to be presented today by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The vote comes as the federal government remains partially shutdown for the 31st day. It continues as Congress remains at odds over funding the government in which President Trump is demanding nearly six-billion-dollars for his border wall. Trump is now offering three years of temporary deportation protection for Dreamers, illegal immigrants brought here as children, in exchange for wall funding. The plan has so far been rejected by Democratic leadership, who want to see the government back up and running before any negotiations begin. In a tweet over the weekend, Trump called the thousands of government employees who have been working without pay “great patriots.”

Ex-police officer that killed black Chicago teen will go to jail

The former Chicago officer convicted of killing an African American teenager was sentenced to more than six-years in prison today.  Jason Van Dyke, who is white, shot and killed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald in October of 2014. Authorities initially said McDonald lunged at police officers. Police dashboard camera recording showed McDonald was moving away when Van Dyke opened fire, hitting the teenager 16 times.  In October of 2018, Van Dyke was found guilty of second degree murder in the shooting of McDonald.  Thursday, three other Chicago police officers were acquitted after being accused of helping cover up the incident.

More R. Kelly accusations and Chappelle on Kelly confrontation

Another woman is accusing R. Kelly of sexual abuse. Tracy Sampson says Kelly began sexually abusing her when she 16 and working as an intern at Epic Records. There are reports that Sony Records has now dropped the singer from its label.   Comedian and DC native Dave Chappelle says “R.” Kelly wanted to fight him over his impersonation of him on his Chappelle’s Show in 2003.  Chappelle said Kelly’s “goons” threatened him over a sketch that referenced the child pornography charges against Kelly.  Meanwhile, a former manager for R. Kelly is surrendering to Georgia police on charges that he threatened an accuser of the singer.

Insight on the Gillette Commercial Controversy

It’s the commercial everyone is talking about and bringing awareness to the Me Too movement. Many were opposed to the message and others thought it was a great concept. Tonight, we’re going to dive into the Gillette commercial and we want to know your thoughts.

BACKGROUND-BUSINESS INSIDER

Furious people are destroying their razors after watching Gillette’s ad — but it gave the company a crucial advantage over some of its biggest competitors A survey of 2,201 adults conducted this week by Morning Consultand released on Thursday found that the majority of those surveyed (61%) said they had a positive opinion of the ad after watching it. Moreover, of the people who said they used products from Harry’s or Dollar Shave Club, 56% said they would be more likely to buy from Gillette after watching the ad. Gillette had long been the market leader for razors until buzzy new startups such as Harry’s and Dollar Shave Club arrived on the scene.

Harry’s, the direct-to-consumer service, immediately became a hit with millennials. In early 2018, it raised $112 million in funding to expand its business beyond men’s grooming, bringing its total funding to $375 million.

Dollar Shave Club, which offers a similar subscription service, was bought by Unilever for $1 billion in 2016 in one of the most expensive purchases of an e-commerce company.

WHUR, HU & FedEx To Host Food Drive To Help Feed Federal Workers

“It has now been over a month since thousands of federal workers have been off their jobs without pay. Many are having to make some tough decisions about day to day living. We hope this ‘rolling food collection drive’ will help to keep meals on the table for these employees,” said WHUR Interim General Manager Sean Plater.

Rolling Food Drive Gives Local Workers Chance to Assist their Federal Colleagues

(Washington, D.C., January 18, 2019) – Howard University, WHUR and FedEx are teaming up to restock the shelves of federal workers in the DMV. Additional donations from the community are welcomed.

Recent news reports have documented how furloughed federal employees in the DMV are having a tough time making ends meet as they continue to wait to receive a paycheck. Howard University, WHUR 96.3FM and FedEx are leading an effort to host a rolling food collection drive throughout the region urging local government and private sector workers to bring canned goods to help lessen the burden for their colleagues.

“It has now been over a month since thousands of federal workers have been off their jobs without pay. Many are having to make some tough decisions about day to day living. We hope this ‘rolling food collection drive’ will help to keep meals on the table for these employees,” said WHUR Interim General Manager Sean Plater.

The goal each day is to pack the FedEx truck with enough food to feed hundreds of federal workers, added Plater. All donations collected will go to the Capital Area Food Bank, which has been hosting weekly food giveaways for furloughed workers and contractors.

President denies Pelosi military plane

Stabbing near Metro station

Police are investigating a stabbing that took place outside the Wheaton Metro station today. The victim is said to be a man in his 20s. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Train service on the Red Line was briefly affected, and trains were bypassing the station for a short time. Metro Transit Police say they have a suspect in custody.

Kidnap suspect wanted

DC Police are still searching for a woman who allegedly tried to kidnap a child.  The incident happened Tuesday around 5:00 p.m. in the 28-hundred block of Dumbarton Street Northwest. Police say after grabbing and trying to lure the child away, the suspect fled on foot and ran east on Dumbarton. Police have released images of the woman online. She is described as a middle age white female who is about five-foot-seven with a blonde mohawk hairstyle.

Pelosi-Trump tit-for-tat

President Trump is denying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi the use of a military plane during the government shutdown. The move comes after Pelosi called on Trump to delay his upcoming State of the Union address. Trump informed Pelosi that her “seven-day excursion” to Brussels, Egypt and Afghanistan is being postponed and can be rescheduled when shutdown ends. He also said that if she wants to go, should pay her own way by flying commercially.

Thousands of IRS employee ordered back to work w/o pay…

The IRS will be ready for the tax season despite the partial government shutdown. Forty-six thousand IRS workers have been told to return to work and they will not be paid during the furlough. Their mission is to process and send out tax refund checks on time.

FAA workers were also given the same directive. Nearly 3,000 safety employees will have to return to their jobs without pay. The staff includes inspectors and other safety workers. Since the furlough began 26 days ago, some 24,000 vital air traffic controllers have been working to keep the friendly skies safe. The most recent numbers by the agency show close to 14,000 of its 44,000 work force remain on the job.

DC judge decides government can not be forced to pay essential workers during furlough…

A federal judge in the District of Columbia has decided that the federal government can not be forced to pay essential employees working without pay during the partial government shutdown. The National Treasury Employee Union filed the suit claiming, making employees work without pay is unconstitutional. The judge, however, stated that allowing employees deemed essential to not come to work would create chaos and confusion.

IRS Recalls About 46,000 Workers To Handle Tax Returns

An IRS document detailing its new shutdown plan shows that 46,052 agency employees will be called back to work, of the total workforce of 80,265. It says the plan will take effect as soon as the Treasury Department issues an official notice.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service is recalling about 46,000 of its employees furloughed by the government shutdown — nearly 60 percent of its workforce — to handle tax returns and pay out refunds. The employees won’t be paid during the shutdown.

With the official start of the tax filing season coming Jan. 28, the Trump administration has promised that taxpayers owed refunds will be paid on time, despite the disruption in government services caused by the partial shutdown now in its fourth week.

There had been growing concern that the shutdown would delay refunds worth hundreds of billions of dollars because the money wouldn’t be available for them from Congress. But last week, the administration said customary shutdown policies will be reversed to make the money available to pay refunds on time.

An IRS document detailing its new shutdown plan shows that 46,052 agency employees will be called back to work, of the total workforce of 80,265. It says the plan will take effect as soon as the Treasury Department issues an official notice.

Only about 10,000 employees are deemed essential and have been working.

Some 800,000 federal employees have been furloughed or are working without pay. President Donald Trump didn’t budge Tuesday from his demand to have Congress provide $5.7 billion to build his promised border wall with Mexico. Democrats say they will discuss border security once the government has reopened, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is refusing money for the wall Democrats view as ineffective and immoral.

About three-quarters of U.S. taxpayers receive annual refunds, giving them an incentive to file their returns early. Many lower-income people count on refunds as their biggest cash infusion of the year. Overall, refunds average $2,800.

The issue is politically sensitive. The massive tax law enacted by Republicans in Congress in late 2017, which is President Donald Trump’s signature legislative achievement, gave generous tax cuts to corporations and the wealthiest Americans and more modest reductions to middle- and low-income households. The law is expected to bring lower taxes for 2018 for the great majority of Americans, and the refunds are a big tangible part of that.

Trump told supporters on a conference call Tuesday that his administration has been working to minimize the painful impacts of the shutdown. “People are actually amazed that, with this many people, that government is really working so well. So we’re very proud of that,” he said.

Angered over employees having to work without pay, the union representing IRS staff sued in federal court last week to challenge any such agency action on constitutional grounds. The Constitution doesn’t allow the government to obligate funds that haven’t been provided by Congress, and the executive branch “can’t continue to force more and more employees to show up in exchange only for an IOU,” the National Treasury Employees Union said.

On Tuesday, a federal judge rejected the union’s challenge, declining to force the government to pay the recalled employees.

Some experts question whether the administration has the legal authority to reverse earlier policies to allow the government to issue tax refunds during a shutdown.

In 2011, the chief counsel at the IRS concluded that such payments were legally allowed during a shutdown. At the time, the White House Office of Management and Budget, under President Barack Obama, rejected that position and directed the IRS not to pay refunds during a shutdown. But the IRS said last week that OMB had reviewed the issue at the Treasury’s Department’s request and now agrees with the IRS counsel’s position that refunds can legally be paid.

Northwest DC Murder, Attorney General Nominee Testifies, Resolution Denounces White Supremacy

Murder on North Capitol Street
Barr testifies
Congressman reprimanded

North Capitol & M street shooting

Another murder on the streets of the nation’s capital.
A man was shot and killed today in the 12-hundred block of North Capitol and M streets in Northwest. Police say the shooting took place around three o’clock this afternoon and the victim was in his twenties. Police say it was not a random shooting and that they have identified a suspect. The name of that suspect and the victim have not been released.

William Barr testifies

Attorney General-nominee William Barr says he wants Special Counsel Robert Mueller to complete his investigation of Russian influence in the 2016 presidential campaign.
That was the big issue swirling around President Trump’s attorney general nominee. During his Senate confirmation hearing today, Barr argued it’s in the country’s best interest for Mueller to produce a final report. Barr said he would refuse a presidential direction to fire Mueller without good cause.  He added that President Trump sought no promises or commitments from him before his nomination and that his allegiance is to the rule of law.  If confirmed, Barr would replace Matt Whitaker, who has served as interim Attorney General since President Trump fired Jeff Sessions shortly after last years mid-term elections.

Congressman denounced for racist comments

The nation will officially celebrate it as national holiday next Monday, but today is the actual 90th birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. Coincidentally, a Congressman named King, first name Steve, was officially reprimanded for racists remarks. The House of Representative passed a resolution today rejecting white nationalism and white supremacy. In a recent New York Times article, Steve King wondered when white supremacy and white nationalist became offensive language. The Iowa congressman has been accused of making racists comments in the past. King was stripped of his committee assignments by Republicans, Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney said she’d like to see King “find another line of work,” and Tim Scott, the Senate’s only black Republican, applauded the action taken against King.

Desperate Parents And Discount Marijuana: DC In A Shutdown

“What keeps us up at night is not the work we know we have to do in weeks one and two,” Deputy City Administrator Kevin Donahue said. It’s the unpredictable impacts of weeks four and five and onward, he said, with the potential for mass restaurant closures or residents missing payments on rent, mortgages, car loans or school fees.

WASHINGTON (AP) — No city experiences a shutdown quite like Washington.

Besides the economic impact, a shutdown warps the nation’s capital on a cultural, recreational and logistical level — touching everybody from garbage collectors to young parents, prospective newlyweds to aspiring Eagle Scouts.

The current partial shutdown , now in a record fourth week, has also provided a quiet boon for Mayor Muriel Bowser’s government, which rushed into the void to claim unprecedented new powers while making a public show of literally cleaning up the federal government’s mess.

The economic situation is, of course, brutal. Recent surveys estimate that the federal government directly employs more than 364,000 people in the greater Washington area including northern Virginia and southern Maryland. The District of Columbia alone — population 700,000 — contains more than 102,000 jobs in agencies that are now without appropriations funding.

Deputy City Administrator Kevin Donahue made the analogy to the main plant shutting down in a factory town — with the subsequent knock-on effect through the service industries like restaurants, food trucks, entertainment and taxis.

“What keeps us up at night is not the work we know we have to do in weeks one and two,” Donahue said. It’s the unpredictable impacts of weeks four and five and onward, he said, with the potential for mass restaurant closures or residents missing payments on rent, mortgages, car loans or school fees.

Most immediately, the shutdown created a logistical and public health problem. The district is riddled with National Park Service land, ranging from the National Mall to urban green spaces like Dupont Circle and dozens of neighborhood parks.

Washington sanitation crews now empty the trash bins at 122 separate NPS sites — three times a day in the case of the bins at the National Mall. It’s costing at least $54,000 per week in overtime, and Donahue said there’s a handshake agreement dating back to previous shutdowns that Washington will be compensated when the government reopens. The NPS recently announced it would tap into other funds to resume its own trash pickup at some — but not all — of the Washington sites.

“There’s a past practice of reimbursement,” Donahue said. “But they don’t have a legal obligation to compensate us.”

Given Washington’s tortured relationship with the federal government, which can essentially alter or block any local law, city officials have seemingly relished the chance to highlight the ironies of the moment. They frequently claim they are treated by Congress as if they can’t handle their own affairs; now they’re taking over and covering for a dysfunctional central government.

“When the federal government shuts down, we step up,” Bowser said during a Jan. 4 news conference with Washington’s nonvoting congressional delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton, to announce a renewed push this year for district statehood.

The shutdown cuts a cultural swath through the lives of city residents. The entire Smithsonian network of museums, including the zoo , closed their doors about a week into the shutdown, and quasi-federal entities like the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts have severely cut back their hours.

On a recent weekend, the usual Saturday morning kids’ drumming workshop at the BloomBars cultural center in Columbia Heights drew nearly triple the usual crowd, with parents and strollers lined halfway up the block in the rain. The reason: desperate parents searching for something to occupy their kids in a city where more than a dozen free museums and the zoo have been shuttered.

“It happens every time,” laughed BloomBars founder John Chambers, who recalls an identical spike during the 16-day 2013 shutdown. “But this time it feels like there’s more of a panic among people because (this shutdown) genuinely seems open-ended.”

The district is littered with shutdown specials — offering furloughed federal employees discounts on everything from food and drink to live theater and medical marijuana .

Examples of unexpected shutdown fallout are all around. High school senior Yosias Zelalem was all set to secure his Eagle Scout rank with a project to repair park benches along the Mount Vernon Trail. But his liaison at the NPS has been furloughed and the project is frozen.

“I didn’t really think about it until New Year’s came and went,” said Zelalem, who needs to complete the project before he turns 18 on March 27. “I honestly didn’t expect it to go on this long. Now everybody’s talking like this could go for months.”

One of the more random side-effects of shutdown: the closure of the marriage bureau.

Bowser told The Associated Press that even she was surprised to learn that local couples couldn’t get their marriage licenses because Congress funds the local court system. Divorce proceedings, however, were unaffected.

Bowser quickly tapped allies on the Council of the District of Columbia to pass emergency legislation called the Let Our Vows Endure (LOVE) act, which granted her administration the right to issue marriage licenses. In addition to an enjoyable public victory that drew national attention, Bowser’s administration just stepped into the federal void to claim a whole new power ahead of an impending district statehood push.

At a recent event to sign the LOVE act into law, Bowser — flanked by grateful newlyweds — said, “Just so my team knows, we’re probably going to want to keep that power.”

Nobody laughed and she didn’t seem to be joking.

A Second Day Of School Closures And Delays, The President’s Choice For AG Appears On The Hill

A second day of school closures and delays…

The lingering snow and icy conditions prompted area school leaders to again delay or cancel classes today. The school systems closed today were all in Virginia. They include Arlington, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Manassas City public schools.

On a 2-hour delay in Maryland are Prince George’s, Charles, Anne Arundel, St. Mary’s, Anne Arundel and Calvert County schools. In Virginia, the schools with a delayed start this morning are Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Prince William, and Loudoun County schools. You can always keep up to date on school closings and delays online at whur.com.

The Presidents choice for AG appears on the hill…

Today President Trump’s choice for the new Attorney General is due to appear on the hill. William Barr is expected to be grilled by Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Barr who Trump nominated to replaced ousted Attorney General Jeff Sessions served as Attorney General during the administration of President George H.W. Bush. There is some concern over his nomination because of his comments of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe in the Russian meddling in the 2016 Presidential election.

Lawmakers reprimand Congressman King for racist comments…

The house is preparing to hold a vote today on whether or not to punish Republican Congressman Steve King for racist comments he made in a newspaper. King’s comments have drawn bi partisan backlash. King has been stripped of his committee’s by his own party.

King is back in the spotlight for questioning why the terms “white nationalist” and “white supremacist” were offensive. He later said he rejected those ideologies but it was too late many on both sides of the aisle believe the Iowa Republican who has a history of making racist comments should step down.
