Arrest Made In Road Rage Shooting Of Local Boxer

A man has been charged and arrested in the shooting death of a local boxer in a road rage incident.

Prince George’s County police say they’ve arrested the person responsible for shooting a pro-boxer in a road rage incident on Christmas Eve in Temple Hills.

Police say Markell Lewis confessed to killing 30-year-old Danny Kelly, Jr.
The shooting happened on Dec. 24, when Kelly was driving northbound on St. Barnabas Road with his girlfriend and three children. An SUV pulled up alongside Kelly’s truck, and someone inside the vehicle opened fire.  A witness said Lewis and Kelly exchanged words as one allegedly cut off the other on the road.
Lewis was arrested on three days after Kelly’s killing after being found with a gun and drugs in a car he was traveling in. He was charged with possession but later released, not by the police, but the courts. Prince George’s County police chief Malik Aziz, said he did not know why Lewis was released.  Later, police were able to tie Lewis’ gun to the fatal shooting of Kelly, Jr.

Potential Mary J. Blige And Whitney Houston Duet Was Turned Down By Clive Davis

A 2019 interview with Mary J. Blige’s former manager Kirk Burrowes has resurfaced and it reveals that one of Mary’s hits was supposed to feature Whitney Houston.

“I wanted Mary to do a duet with Whitney [Houston],” Burrowes said. Burrowes was trying to leverage the relationship he had with Clive Davis by getting the two powerhouses on a track.

“He had Whitney and Aretha Franklin, but what Clive did was cut the baby in half. So he set it up for me and Mary to do the Whitney duet on Divas Live, so I could get the Whitney duet that I wanted.”

During the 1999 Divas Live, Mary and Whitney paid tribute to the “Queen of Soul,” by performing her song, “Ain’t No Way.”

Children Being Pulled Away From Organized Sports….

Are too few children participating in organized sports, as access to physical fitness has plummeted during the pandemic? One doctor and author thinks so.

Sports and kids typically go hand-in-hand.  And that combination “used” to include schools.

But recent studies have shown that school systems across the country are cutting back on sports programs for school aged children. And then there is the pandemic which has pulled many kids away from organized sports activities.

One leading expert says the lack of involvement in organized sports is a having a negative effect on kids physically, emotionally and academically.  That expert joins us tonight for our conversation.

Virginia Removes Jim Crow Era Laws

Jim Crow era laws cleared from Virginia’s legal records.

Near 60 laws and legal opinions that upheld segregation during the Jim Crow area in Virginia are being wiped off the books.  Outgoing Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring says the laws supported by previous Virginia Attorneys General, upheld segregation, bans on interracial marriage bans and other racist laws, needed to be definitively nullified.

Most of the Jim Crow era laws and opinions are no longer in affect due to Supreme Court decisions.  Still,  State Senator Mamie Locke, a member of the Virginia Assembly’s legislative Black caucus, sees Herrings actions as progress.

Herrings says the laws struck from Virginia’s legal books supported Virginia’s Massive Resistance campaign which pushed back against federal desegregation efforts.  Some of the tactics of the campaign included shutting down public schools rather than allowing integration.

Supreme Court Blocks Employee Vaccine Mandate

The Biden administration’s mandate that businesses with 100 employees or more require its workers to be vaccinated has been rejected by the Supreme Court.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has stopped the Biden administration from enforcing a requirement that employees at large businesses be vaccinated against COVID-19 or undergo weekly testing and wear a mask on the job.  At the same time, the court is allowing the administration to proceed with a vaccine mandate for most health care workers in the U.S.

The court’s orders Thursday during a spike in coronavirus cases was a mixed bag for the administration’s efforts to boost the vaccination rate among Americans.

The court’s conservative majority concluded the administration overstepped its authority by seeking to impose the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s vaccine-or-test rule on U.S. businesses with at least 100 employees. More than 80 million people would have been affected.

In dissent, the court’s three liberals argued that it was the court that was overreaching by substituting its judgment for that of health experts. “Acting outside of its competence and without legal basis, the Court displaces the judgments of the Government officials given the responsibility to respond to workplace health emergencies,” Justices Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor wrote in a joint dissent.

When crafting the OSHA rule, White House officials always anticipated legal challenges — and privately some harbored doubts that it could withstand them. The administration nonetheless still views the rule as a success at already driving millions of people to get vaccinated and for private businesses to implement their own requirements that are unaffected by the legal challenge.

Both rules had been challenged by Republican-led states. In addition, business groups attacked the OSHA emergency regulation as too expensive and likely to cause workers to leave their jobs at a time when finding new employees already is difficult.

The vaccine mandate that the court will allow to be enforced nationwide scraped by on a 5-4 vote, with Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh joining the liberals to form a majority. The mandate covers virtually all health care workers in the country, applying to providers that receive federal Medicare or Medicaid funding. It potentially affects 76,000 health care facilities as well as home health care providers. The rule has medical and religious exemptions.

The challenges posed by a global pandemic do not allow a federal agency to exercise power that Congress has not conferred upon it. At the same time, such unprecedented circumstances provide no grounds for limiting the exercise of authorities the agency has long been recognized to have,” the court wrote in an unsigned opinion, saying the “latter principle governs” in the healthcare cases.

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in dissent that the case was about whether the administration has the authority “to force healthcare workers, by coercing their employers, to undergo a medical procedure they do not want and cannot undo.” He said the administration hadn’t shown convincingly that Congress gave it that authority.

Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett signed onto Thomas’ opinion. Alito wrote a separate dissent that the other three conservatives also joined.

Decisions by federal appeals courts in New Orleans and St. Louis had blocked the mandate in about half the states. The administration already was taking steps to enforce it elsewhere.

More than 208 million Americans, 62.7% of the population, are fully vaccinated, and more than a third of those have received booster shots, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. All nine justices have gotten booster shots.

The justices heard arguments on the challenges last week. Their questions then hinted at the split verdict that they issued Thursday.

A separate vaccine mandate for federal contractors, on hold after lower courts blocked it, has not been considered by the Supreme Court.

Tupac Shakur’s sister has filed a lawsuit against the Executor of the rapper’s estate for alleged embezzlement.
In court documents, Sekyiwa Shakur states about Tom Whalley, “He has effectively embezzled millions of dollars for his own benefit. In addition, she is also contesting his role as manager of Amaru Entertainment and says he abused his powers.

Jennifer Hough Drops $20M Nicki Minaj Harassment Suit

Nicki Minaj is reportedly off the hook for the harassment suit that Jennifer Hough filed against her.
Sadly, Nicki is now going after her for legal fees.
Nicki’s lawyers responded to the case and said, “In my view, your conduct in pursuing this case against Nicki represents the worst of our legal system: bottom-feeding lawyers who pursue frivolous actions against a celebrity assuming that they will be paid off if they throw enough dirt.”
He also said, “You forced my client to spend over $300,000 in fees to defend a case which even my labradoodle, Gracie, could see was frivolous on both the facts and the law.”
The lawsuit with Nicki’s man, Kenneth Petty, is still pending.

Jan. 6th Committee Wants To Speak With Republican Leader McCarthy

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House panel investigating the U.S. Capitol insurrection requested an interview and records from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday, as it shifts its focus to former President Donald Trump’s inner circle — and what he was doing as hundreds of his supporters brutally beat police, stormed the building and interrupted the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory.

Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, Democratic chairman of the panel, requested that McCarthy, R-Calif., provide information to the nine-member panel regarding his conversations with Trump “before, during and after” the riot. The request also seeks information about McCarthy’s communications with former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows in the days before the attack.

“We also must learn about how the President’s plans for January 6th came together, and all the other ways he attempted to alter the results of the election,” Thompson said in the letter. “For example, in advance of January 6th, you reportedly explained to Mark Meadows and the former President that objections to the certification of the electoral votes on January 6th ‘was doomed to fail.’”

But it remains unclear whether the panel will be able to gain testimony from McCarthy or any other congressional allies of Trump. While the committee has considered subpoenaing fellow lawmakers, that would be an extraordinary move and could run up against legal and political challenges.

The committee acknowledged the sensitive and unusual nature of its request as it proposed a meeting with McCarthy on either Feb. 3 or 4. “The Select Committee has tremendous respect for the prerogatives of Congress and the privacy of its Members,” Thompson wrote. “At the same time, we have a solemn responsibility to investigate fully the facts and circumstances of these events.

A request for comment from McCarthy’s office was not immediately returned.

Democrats have been seeking more information about McCarthy’s call with Trump that day since the former president’s second impeachment trial in the days after the riot. At one point in the trial, Democrats said they would try and call Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash., as a witness because she had described the call between the two men after hearing an account from McCarthy. In the end, Democrats read a statement from Herrera Beutler into the record. Trump, who had just left office, was acquitted by the Senate.

She said in the statement, “That’s when, according to McCarthy, the president said, ‘Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.’”

McCarthy had initially criticized Trump’s actions after the 2020 election, saying he “bears responsibility” for the deadly Jan. 6 attack, which remains the most serious domestic assault on the building in its history.

“The saddest day I have ever had” in Congress, McCarthy said the night of the attack, even as he went on to join 138 other House Republicans in voting to overturn Biden’s win.

The latest request from the panel also puts McCarthy face-to-face with its vice-chair, Rep. Liz Cheney, whom he dumped from the No. 3 House leadership position last summer as her very public criticism of Trump’s lies about his 2020 election loss reverberated through the Republican Party.

The GOP leader had counseled Cheney to stay on message, but as she continued to warn the party off Trump’s falsehoods, McCarthy groomed a newly transformed Trump acolyte, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., as her replacement.

The panel, comprised of seven Democrats and two Republicans, has already interviewed more than 300 people and issued subpoenas to more than 40 as it seeks to create a comprehensive record of the Jan. 6 attack and the events leading up to it.

The committee says the extraordinary trove of material it has collected — 35,000 pages of records so far, including texts, emails and phone records from people close to Trump — is fleshing out critical details of the worst attack on the Capitol in two centuries, which played out on live television.

Fauci Slams Republican Senators

Dr. Anthony Fauci angrily denied claims by two Republican Senators that he was being dishonest regarding information on COVID-19

WASHINGTON (AP) — Dr. Anthony Fauci, the U.S. government’s top infectious disease expert, angrily accused a senator Tuesday of making false accusations that are leading to threats against him — all to raise political cash.

Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky has repeatedly said Fauci lies about the pandemic and in a hearing Tuesday also claimed that he tried to “take down” some scientists who disagreed with him.

Paul and other conservative critics have focused their ire at how the pandemic is being handled on Fauci, the National Institutes of Health infectious disease chief who also is President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser. Fauci has needed increased security since 2020 because of threats and harassment against him and his family.

Tuesday, Fauci expressed frustration that this far into the pandemic the senator still “accuses me of things that are completely untrue” and “kindles the crazies out there.”

He pointed to the arrest last month of a California man who was stopped for speeding in Iowa and told a sheriff’s deputy he was on the way to the nation’s capital to kill a list of people in power — including Fauci. Court documents show the man, Kuachua Brillion Xiong of Sacramento, had an AR-15 style rifle, ammunition and body armor in the car.

Fauci said Paul’s website has a “fire Dr. Fauci” page and includes a call for political contributions ranging from $5 to $100.

He accused Paul of using the pandemic “for your political gain,” he said.

The feud overshadowed a hearing of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee designed to examine if policy changes are needed while the U.S. is battling the hugely contagious omicron variant.

Among the chief complaints of Republicans and Democrats alike is a continuing lack of tests to make it easier for people to tell if they have COVID-19 so they can stay home and not spread it.

“I just say to all of you right now, testing’s broken,” said an exasperated Sen. Richard Burr, R-North Carolina, the committee’s ranking member.

Still, Burr and several other lawmakers on both sides of the aisle also thanked Fauci for his work to fight the pandemic.

But later in Tuesday’s hearing, Fauci lost his temper when Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kansas, accused him of hiding financial disclosure forms required of public officials.

“You’re so misinformed that it’s extraordinary,” Fauci responded, saying those documents are publicly available upon request. As the exchange ended, Fauci could be heard muttering off-camera, “What a moron.”

Biden/Harris Stump For Voting Rights Legislation

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were in Atlanta campaigning for the U.S. Senate to pass voting rights protection legislation.

ATLANTA (AP) — Pounding his fist for emphasis, President Joe Biden challenged senators on Tuesday to “stand against voter suppression,” urging them to change Senate rules in order to pass voting rights legislation that Republicans are blocking from debate and votes.

Biden told a crowd in Atlanta that he’d been having quiet conversations with senators for months over the two bills — a lack of progress that has brought his criticism from activists in his own party.

“I’m tired of being quiet!” he shouted. “I will not yield. I will not flinch.”

Current rules require 60 votes to advance most legislation — a threshold that Senate Democrats can’t meet alone because they only have a 50-50 majority with Vice President Kamala Harris to break ties. Republicans unanimously oppose the voting rights measures.

Not all Democrats are on board with changing the filibuster rules. Conservative West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin threw cold water on the idea Tuesday, saying he believes any changes should be made with substantial Republican buy-in.

And even if Democrats clear the obstacles to passage of the voting rights laws, it could be too late to counter widespread voting restrictions passed in 19 states following former President Donald Trump’s 2020 loss and his lies — embraced by many in the GOP — that the election was stolen through voter fraud.

“This matters to all of us,” he insisted. “The goal of the former president and his allies is to disenfranchise anyone who votes against him, simple as that.”

Biden spent decades in the Senate, and he spoke of how much it’s changed for the worse, calling it “a shell of its former self. It gives me no satisfaction to say that as an institutionalist.” He spoke of an era not long ago when an issue like voting rights would never have been so rancorously partisan.

He recalled working with notorious segregationist lawmakers in the Senate to get legislation passed and for it then to be signed into law by Republican presidents. But now, the filibuster has been used rampantly to block even the debating of some legislation.

With Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., setting next Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a deadline to either pass voting legislation or consider revising the rules around the chamber’s filibuster blocking device, Biden is expected to evoke the memories of the U.S. Capitol riot a year ago in more forcefully aligning himself with the voting rights effort.

Biden told his audience: “The next few days, when these bills come to a vote, will mark a turning point in this nation.”

“Will we choose democracy over autocracy, light over shadow, justice over injustice? I know where I stand. I will not yield. I will not flinch,” he declared. “I will defend your right to vote and our democracy against all enemies foreign, yes and domestic! And so the question is where will the institution of the United States Senate stand?”

Biden on Tuesday also paid tribute to civil rights battles past — visiting Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once held forth from the pulpit. He stood quietly as Martin Luther King III placed a wreath outside at the crypt of King and his wife, Coretta Scott King. And he referenced civil rights battles of the 1960s in his animated speech on the grounds of Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University.

Vice President Kamala Harris spoke before Biden Tuesday, warning that a barrage of laws making it tougher to vote means there is “a danger of becoming accustomed to these laws, a danger of adjusting to these laws as though they are normal.”

“There is nothing normal about a law that makes it illegal to pass out water or food to people standing in long voter laws,” she said, to cheers.

Some voting rights advocates boycotted Biden’s speech. Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, known for her untiring voting rights work, also was skipping the event. The White House, meanwhile, sent out an unusually long list of attendees for the speech. Aides said Abrams had a conflict but didn’t explain further, though she tweeted support for the president.

Biden said before his trip the two had a scheduling mix-up but had spoken and were “all on the same page.”

When asked what he was risking politically by speaking out when there aren’t enough votes to change the rules, he said: “I risk not saying what I believe. That’s what I risk. This is one of those defining moments. It really is. People are going to be judged on where were they before and where were they after the vote. History is going to judge us.”

Voting rights advocates in Georgia and nationwide are increasingly anxious about what may happen in 2022 and beyond. They view the changes in many states as a subtler form of ballot restrictions like literacy tests and poll taxes once used to disenfranchise Black voters, a key Democratic constituency.

Republicans who have fallen in line behind Trump’s election misinformation are separately promoting efforts to influence future elections by installing sympathetic leaders in local election posts and by backing for elective office some of those who participated in the riot at the U.S. Capitol a year ago.

Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia, who is senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist and made history as the first Black senator elected in Georgia, said that “anything that can happen that will continue to shine a bright light on the urgency of this issue is important.”

Georgia is at the center of it all, one of the key battleground states in the 2020 elections. After the votes were counted and recounted, Trump told a top state election official he wanted the official to “find” enough votes to overturn his loss. The state’s votes nonetheless went to Biden, and both of its Senate seats went to Democrats as well.

Last year, the Republican governor signed a sweeping rewrite of election rules that, among other things, gives the State Election Board new powers to intervene in county election offices and to remove and replace local election officials. That has led to concerns that the Republican-controlled state board could exert more influence over the administration of elections, including the certification of county results.

Congressional Democrats have written voting legislation that would usher in the biggest overhaul of U.S. elections in a generation by striking down hurdles to voting enacted in the name of election security, reducing the influence of big money in politics and limiting partisan influence over the drawing of congressional districts.

The package would create national election standards that would trump state-level GOP laws. It would also restore the ability of the Justice Department to police election laws in states with a history of discrimination.

Maryland Man Gets Pig’s Heart

Doctors in Maryland perform transplant giving 57-year-old man a pig’s heart.

Maryland (Tuesday, January 11, 2022) – In what is described as a medical first in the U.S., a Maryland man received a pig’s heart in a last ditch effort to save his life.  The surgery happened yesterday at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

The patient is 57-year-old David Bennett from Maryland.  While hospital officials say it is still too soon to know for sure if the surgery works, it marks a step in the decades long effort to one day use animal organs for life-saving transplants.

Doctors say the next few weeks will be critical for Bennett as he recovers.  For now,he’s said to be breathing on his own while still connected to a heart lung machine to help his new heart.

Cold Weather Tips for Your Pets

Cold weather can prove to be dangerous for pets. Here are a few tips to keep them safe and warm during the winter months.

Largo, Maryland – (Tuesday, January 11, 2022) – As the temperatures plunge below freezing again today, Prince George’s County’s Animal Services Division is out with some helpful tips to help keep our four-legged family members safe during the winter.

Cold weather can pose serious threats to the health  pets and the county is recommending when you can to keep your pets inside. But when you do take them out for a walk or the potty, the Prince George’s County Animal Services Division encourages pet owners to closely monitor their exposure to winter elements throughout the season and to remember the law.

If your dog stays outdoors in cold weather, County law requires the following:

  • A dog house of the proper size that is dry, draft-free, and raised off the ground;
  • A wind flap attached to the doghouse to keep cold air out and warm air in;
  • Bedding that is non-absorbent such as straw or wood shavings to help keep the dog warm; and
  • Routinely check your pet’s drinking water to make sure it is not frozen and use a secured container to prevent tipping.

Some tips pet owners should consider during cold weather:

  • Keep kittens and puppies under six months, and small or short-haired dogs inside.
  • Increase the amount of their food; outdoor dogs need more calories in the winter to produce body heat.
  • Never let your dog off their leash in the snow or ice; they can become disoriented and lost, even in a familiar place. Be sure your pet has an ID tag, microchip, and sturdy leash.
  • Wipe your pet’s paws after an outing with a wet cloth to remove any ice or chemicals used to melt snow on sidewalks that can irritate their paws. Salt can irritate or burn, as well as cause vomiting and in some pets can even cause seizures.  Antifreeze has a sweet, attractive smell to pets and can be deadly if ingested.
  • Keep your pets indoors during freezing temperatures. If left unattended outdoors they can get frostbite or become disorientated and freeze to death. Hypothermia can result from extended exposure to cold and is a life-threatening condition.
  • Don’t leave your pet in a closed car in the winter because it can be just as deadly as in the summer.
  • If you have bunnies who live outside, make sure they have a warm, dry hutch with plenty of bedding that is out of the wind.  Water is important too as is some extra food.  Cover the hutch with a tarp.
  • If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on your car hood before starting the engine to give them a chance to escape. Cats like to seek shelter from the cold and can be under the hood of your car.

Maya Angelou Honored On U.S. Coin

The U.S. Mint released the first coins honoring Maya Angelou as part of its American Women Quarters Program.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States Mint said Monday it has begun shipping quarters featuring the image of poet Maya Angelou, the first coins in its American Women Quarters Program.

Angelou, an American author, poet and Civil Rights activist, rose to prominence with the publication of “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” in 1969. Angelou, who died in 2014 at the age of 86, was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010 by President Barack Obama.

The quarter design depicts Angelou with outstretched arms. Behind her are a bird in flight and a rising sun, images inspired by her poetry.

The mint’s program will issue 20 quarters over the next four years honoring women and their achievements in shaping the nation’s history.

Additional honorees in 2022 will be physicist and first woman astronaut Sally Ride, and Wilma Mankiller, the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. Also honored this year will be Nina Otero-Warren, a leader in New Mexico’s suffrage movement and the first female superintendent of Santa Fe public schools, and Anna May Wong, the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood.

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nevada, the Senate sponsor of legislation directing the mint to issue the quarters honoring women, applauded the Mint’s selection of Angelou for the first coin.

“This coin will ensure generations of Americans learn about Maya Angelou’s books and poetry that spoke to the lived experience of Black women,” she said in a statement.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, the nation’s first female Treasury secretary, said, “Each time we redesign our currency, we have the chance to say something about our country …. I’m very proud that these coins celebrate the contributions of some of America’s most remarkable women, including Maya Angelou.”

The Biden administration announced soon after taking office a year ago that it planned to replace Andrew Jackson’s portrait on the $20 bill with abolitionist Harriet Tubman, a leader in the Underground Railroad. However, since that announcement the administration has provided no further details on its plans.

Insurers To Cover Home COVID-19 Test Kits

The Biden Administration says the new coverage policy part of our a strategy to ramp up access to easy-to-use, at-home tests at no cost to Americans.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Starting Saturday, private health insurers will be required to cover up to eight home COVID-19 tests per month for people on their plans. The Biden administration announced the change Monday as it looks to lower costs and make testing for the virus more convenient amid rising frustrations.

Under the new policy, first detailed to the AP, Americans will be able to either purchase home testing kits for free under their insurance or submit receipts for the tests for reimbursement, up to the monthly per-person limit. A family of four, for instance, could be reimbursed for up to 32 tests per month. PCR tests and rapid tests ordered or administered by a health provider will continue to be fully covered by insurance with no limit.

President Joe Biden faced criticism over the holiday season for a shortage of at-home rapid tests as Americans traveled to see family amid the surge in cases from the more transmissible omicron variant. Now the administration is working to make COVID-19 home tests more accessible, both by increasing supply and bringing down costs.

Later this month, the federal government will launch a website to begin making 500 million at-home COVID-19 tests available via mail. The administration also is scaling up emergency rapid-testing sites in areas experiencing the greatest surges in cases.

The insurer-covered testing would dramatically reduce costs for many Americans, and the administration hopes that by easing a barrier to more regular at-home testing, it can help slow the spread of the virus, get kids back into school more quickly and help people gather safely.

“This is all part of our overall strategy to ramp up access to easy-to-use, at-home tests at no cost,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement. “By requiring private health plans to cover people’s at-home tests, we are further expanding Americans’ ability to get tests for free when they need them.”

Biden announced the federal requirement late last year, and it kicks in on Jan. 15, but the administration had been silent until now on details of the plan.

The administration is trying to incentivize private insurers to cover the tests up-front and without a cumbersome reimbursement process. Insurance plans that work with pharmacies and retailers to cover the up-front costs of the tests will be required to reimburse only up to $12 per test if purchased through an out-of-network retailer. Plans that don’t move proactively to set up a network of pharmacies would have to cover the full retail price that the customer paid — which could be more than $12 per test.

There was no immediate reaction from insurers, or details yet on potential insurer and retailer partnerships ahead of Saturday’s effective date.

Only tests purchased on or after Jan. 15 will be required to be reimbursed, the administration said. Some insurers may choose to cover the costs of at-home tests purchased earlier, but they won’t have to.

Mina Bressler, a mother of two and a therapist in San Mateo, California, was able to buy rapid test kits online and shared some with a parent who works in the service industry and doesn’t have time to “sit at her computer every hour refreshing the Walmart page to see when tests are in stock.”

“I gave her some and her kids went to school. That’s one time and there’s a million of her,” Bressler said.

“Just like vaccines becoming available really shone a light on the inequity of what’s going on in this pandemic, I think testing is the new flashlight for that because who’s going online stalking Walmart? It’s not the most vulnerable people in the county,” Bressler added.

Americans on Medicare won’t be able to get tests reimbursed through the federal insurance plan, but Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program plans are required to cover the cost of at-home tests fully. Those who are not on a covered insurance plan can receive free tests through the forthcoming federal website or from some local community centers and pharmacies.

Trailblazing Actor Sidney Poitier Dies at 94

(Friday, January 7, 2021) – The world has lost another legend.  Trailblazing actor Sidney Poitier died Thursday.  Poitier was the first Black performer to win the Academy Award for best actor in 1964 for his role in “Lilies of the Field.”  His career spanned more than 7 decades and is credited with helping to open the doors for many Black actors along the way.  Poitier was 94.

Poitier pushed to change the perception of African American actors challenging audiences to accept Black performers in leading roles on television and in movies.  He upended the demeaning Hollywood tradition of casting Black performers in vulgar caricature or limiting them to singing and dancing roles.

Before Poitier,  no Black actor had a sustained career as a lead performer or could get a film produced based on their own star power.  The renowned actor, director, and activist also starred in such classics as “To Sir, With Love,” “The Heat of the Night,” “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and “A Raisin in the Sun.”

DMV Gets Another Snow Day Off

Snow is forcing another days of delays and cancellations across the DMV

Washington, D.C (Friday, January 7, 2022) – For the second time this week, the Washington region is waking up to more snow and those extra flakes mean an extended weekend for many.  Most school systems are closed as are the National Zoo and all D.C area Smithsonian museums.  Federal government workers also have the day off.

While the overnight snowfall was less treacherous than Monday’s, some roadways were still slushy and slick this morning for commuters.  “I really didn’t have any problems getting out of my complex.  I just had to push the snow off the car and then drove right out,” said Upper Marlboro resident Nicole Kendricks.  Local transportation officials said there were no immediate reports of big crashes on any major highways.  Still drivers are being told to remain vigilante and to take it slow.

Snow accumulations for the region ranged from 2 to 5 inches.  Temperatures today are expected to remain in the 30s.

January 6th Insurrection: One Year Later

What has happened to America since the riot at the Capitol?

One year ago today, thousands overran the U.S. Capitol.  Supporters of President trump violently attempting to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential election.  Today President Biden, standing in Statuary Hall where the insurrectionists battled police and surged into the federal legislative building, railed about President Trump and the attack on democracy. We examine what has happened to America since the riot at the Capitol and where we are now.

Biden Decries Trump Backers’ ‘dagger at throat’ of Democracy

He said: “We are in a battle for the soul of America.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden accused Donald Trump and his supporters of holding a “dagger at the throat of democracy” in a forceful speech Thursday marking the anniversary of the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol. He warned that though it didn’t succeed, the insurrection remains a serious threat to America’s system of government.

Biden’s criticism was blistering of the defeated president whom he blamed for the assault that has fundamentally changed Congress and the nation, and raised global concerns about the future of American democracy.

“For the first time in our history, a president not just lost an election, he tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power as a violent mob breached the Capitol,” Biden said. “You can’t love your country only when you win.”

His voice booming at times, filling the ornate Statuary Hall where rioters had laid siege, the president called on Americans to remember what they saw Jan. 6 with their own eyes: the mob attacking police, breaking windows, a Confederate flag inside the Capitol, gallows erected outside threatening to hang the vice president — all while Trump sat at the White House watching it on TV.

“The former president’s supporters are trying to rewrite history. They want you to see Election Day as the day of insurrection and the riot that took place here on January 6 as a true expression of the will of the people. Can you think of a more twisted way to look at this country, to look at America? I cannot.”

The president’s remarks launched the start of daylong remembrance, drawing a contrast between the truth of what happened and the false narratives that persist about the Capitol assault, including the continued refusal by many Republicans to affirm that Biden won the 2020 election.

“We must be absolutely clear about what is true and what is a lie,” Biden said. “The former president of the United States of America has spread a web of lies about the 2020 election.”

He said: “We are in a battle for the soul of America.”

“I did not seek this fight, brought to this Capitol one year from today. But I will not shrink from it either. I will stand in this breach, I will defend this nation. I will allow no one to place a dagger at the throat of this democracy.”

Republican leaders and lawmakers largely stayed away from the day’s events, dismissing them as overly politicized — some continuing to spread false claims about the election.
