Far Right Leader Arrested On Eve Of Pro-Trump Rally

A leader of the Proud Boys arrested in DC.

The District continues to prepare this morning for pro-Trump supporters who are expected in downtown DC today and tomorrow, the largest crowds expected Wednesday in protest of the presidential election results.  City officials say they are bracing for possible violence.  Mayor Bowser has called up the National Guard, streets downtown have been closed and District officials are asking people to stay away from downtown today and tomorrow.

The far right group the Proud Boys plan to be part of the protests. One of its leaders may not. Henry “Enrique” Tarrio will appear in DC court today.  He was arrested yesterday and charged with burning and destroying a Black Lives Matter banner last month that hung at Asbury United Methodist Church.  Another banner was pulled from the Metropolitan AME Church. Both Asbury and Metropolitan are historic African American churches. Metropolitan is suing the Proud Boys, alleging the group committed an act of terror.

(Washington, DC) — Pro-Trump demonstrations in Washington D.C. this week are expected to draw thousands, prompting the D.C. National Guard to activate 340 troops. Georgia Elections Official Debunks Conspiracy Theories

Gabriel Sterling said every vote matters and will be tallied.

(Atlanta, GA) — A top Georgia elections official is criticizing “misinformation and disinformation” around this week’s big Senate runoff election in the Peach State. Talking to reporters in Atlanta, Gabriel Sterling said every vote matters and will be tallied. He spoke of a robust turnout in early voting and mail-in balloting and said there will be plenty of precincts open for in-person voting. Meantime, Sterling refuted those who have questioned the reliability of Georgia’s vote counting in the presidential election, including President Trump. Sterling said there are people in positions of authority and respect who have said votes didn’t count, adding “It’s not true.”

Gabriel Sterling, Voting System Implementation Manager, State of Georgia

The big Georgia runoff features Republican Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler and Democratic challengers Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. A win by the two Dems would produce a 50-50 split in the Senate. New VP Kamala Harris would be the tiebreaking vote after January 20th, giving Democrats control of the Senate.

More than 4.2 million vaccine doses have been administered so far in the U.S., according to the CDC.
However, many experts say that’s not fast enough – especially since over 13 million doses have already been distributed. That’s well short of initial predictions that 20 million people would have received the vaccine by the end of December.

Drunk Driving Fatalities Up Across DMV

Washington Regional Alcohol Program is out with its 28th Annual “How Safe Are Our Roads” Report

Washington, D.C. ( Tuesday, December 29, 2020) – Alcohol-related crashes, injuries, and drunk driving arrests all decreased in the metropolitan Washington area in 2019.  That’s the finding of  the 28th Annual “How Safe Are Our Roads” report prepared by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) for the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP).

But there is a downside to the report.  Alcohol and/or drug-impaired traffic fatalities increased during this same period. There were 90 alcohol and/or drug-impaired traffic fatalities recorded in 2019.  That’s compared to 85 fatalities in 2018 – a nearly six-percent (5.88%) increase in such deaths from the previous year.

“With Greater Washington now exceeding the national average as to the percentage of traffic deaths involving impaired drivers, it’s all too clear that the local fight against drunk driving is far from won,” said WRAP President Kurt Erickson.

“Law enforcement agencies in the region are committed to combating one of the rare public health issues that is 100 percent preventable – impaired driving,” said COG Police Chiefs Committee Chairman and Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department Chief David Huchler. “While there are many proactive education and enforcement initiatives underway in the region, the annual How Safe are Our Roads Report allows law enforcement to assess reported incidents and make data-driven decisions on the deployment of police resources with the ultimate goal of making our roadways safer for all travelers.”

Of the metropolitan Washington area’s 280 total traffic fatalities in 2019, nearly a third of these roadway deaths were alcohol and/or drug-related. Nationally, 28-percent of total U.S. vehicular fatalities in 2019 were reported as alcohol-impaired, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Washington Releases QB Haskins

Coach says Taylor Heinicke will start Sunday’s season finale at Philadelphia if Alex Smith is unable to return from his calf injury.

(Ashburn, VA) — The Washington Football Team is parting ways with quarterback Dwayne Haskins. The team has released the 2019 first-round draft pick, with head coach Ron Rivera saying it benefits both parties to go their separate ways. The move comes after Haskins was benched during Sunday’s loss to Carolina. He was just 14-of-28 for 154 yards and two interceptions before getting replaced by Taylor Heinicke in the fourth quarter. Haskins has thrown for just 1,439 yards, five touchdowns and seven picks in seven games this season. Rivera says Heinicke will start Sunday’s season finale at Philadelphia if Alex Smith is unable to return from his calf injury. Washington can clinch the NFC East Division with a win.
