Michelle Obama’s ‘Becoming’ Book Tour Kicked Off In Chicago; Oprah Moderated Conversation

“Becoming” describes Obama’s upbringing on Chicago’s South Side and her transition to college at Princeton University. As she does in her book, she recounted Tuesday being raised in a family that struggled economically — but with parents who encouraged her to be successful.

CHICAGO (AP) — Michelle Obama began her 12-stop book tour Tuesday by sitting with Oprah Winfrey before an audience at the home arena of the Chicago Bulls, speaking on everything from piano lessons and washing socks to crying on a plane the day her family moved out of the White House and President Donald Trump moved in.

The crowd of 14,000 roared as the former first lady stepped onto a stage at the sold-out United Center event, which felt part talk show, part political rally and part rock concert, complete with $35 Michele Obama T-shirts emblazoned with her face and the title of her just-released memoir, “Becoming.” Family pictures of Barack Obama and their children flashed on a screen over her shoulder as she spoke.

During the more than 90-minute conversation under Bulls’ NBA championship banners in Obama’s home city, she never directly criticized Trump. Crying on the plane leaving Washington on Inauguration Day 2017, she explained, had nothing to do with Trump.

“When I got on the plane, I sobbed for 30 minutes,” she said. “I think it was just the release of eight years trying to do everything perfectly.”

Obama turned to her husband, who had just become a former president. “I said to Barack, ’That was so hard, what we just did. That was so hard.” She said she didn’t mention that episode in her book.

She didn’t criticize Trump directly at the event despite direct criticism of him in her book.

She writes in “Becoming” that Trump’s “loud and reckless innuendos” about her husband’s birth certificate stirred people up and put “my family’s safety at risk.” And for this,” she adds, “I’d never forgive him.”

Trump responded last week, saying Michelle Obama “got paid a lot of money” to write that book and they always expect a little controversy.” The current president said that he’d never forgive his predecessor for making the country “very unsafe.”

When Winfrey, who selected “Becoming” for her influential book club , introduced Obama she referred to the divisive political climate, also without directly naming Trump.

“So many people are feeling uneasy… afraid of the impending darkness,” Winfrey told the audience. “But you all being here tonight is a testament to the light.”

“Becoming” describes Obama’s upbringing on Chicago’s South Side and her transition to college at Princeton University. As she does in her book, she recounted Tuesday being raised in a family that struggled economically — but with parents who encouraged her to be successful.

When she was a child, she said her dad would complain to her mother that she wasn’t teaching her children how to wash socks, because he had had so few socks growing up that he had to wash them and dry them on a radiator himself.

“My mom said, ‘I’m not teaching them how to wash their socks. I’m going to teach them to go to college, so they can buy a washing machine,’” Obama said Tuesday.

She also talked about learning how to play the piano on a rickety one and her surprise at seeing her first piano that was in good condition.

“You mean there are perfect pianos out there?” she recalled thinking. “I didn’t even know about it.”

The memoir, officially released Tuesday, is already a best-seller. It topped Amazon.com’s best-seller list throughout the weekend.

The tour that started in Chicago moves on to Los Angles, Washington, Detroit, Paris and London, and other U.S. cities. It ends next month in New York City.

Tens of thousands of people purchased tickets to Obama’s United Center appearance — paying from just under $30 to hundreds or even thousands of dollars for VIP packages. No tickets are available online for some stops.

Although some fans have complained about the high cost, 10 percent of tickets costs are being donated to local charities, schools and community groups.

Florida Passes Amendment 4 Granting Voting Rights To Disenfranchised Felons

On Tuesday, Florida made a step in a new direction when constituents voted to pass Amendment 4 which will restore voting rights to anyone convicted of a felony as long as they have completed their sentence. The amendment will exclude those convicted of murder or felony sex crimes.

Voting has always been an avenue of power. On Tuesday, Florida made a step in a new direction when constituents voted to pass Amendment 4 which will restore voting rights to anyone convicted of a felony as long as they have completed their sentence. The amendment will exclude those convicted of murder or felony sex crimes.

According to a study, Florida, ‘accounts for more than a quarter (27 percent) of the disenfranchised population nationally, and its nearly 1.5 million individuals disenfranchised post-sentence account for nearly half (48 percent) of the national total.’

Disenfranchised African Americans will benefit most from Amendment 4. A 2016 study done by The Sentencing Project shows that 21% percent of African Americans in Florida were disenfranchised.

The organization responsible for spearheading Amendment 4, Second Chances Florida, believes, “Now is the time to return the eligibility to vote to Floridians who have done their time and paid their debts.”

As previously reported by WHUR, Rihanna has been very vocal politically and she used her platform to advocate for Amendment 4. In a long caption the singer said, “And VOTE YES on Amendment 4 to restore voting rights to folks who have already paid their debt to society.”

Amendment 4 has garnered the attention of many. And while many states have reformed their felony disenfranchisement laws the policies have not made the restoration process accessible to all. Hopefully, Florida sets a precedent for the remaining states that strip felons of voting rights like Iowa, Kentucky and Virginia.

Rihanna Also Wants Trump To Stop Playing Her Music At Rallies; Sends Cease And Desist

Rihanna is the latest artist to send Trump a cease and desist order for playing her song “Don’t Stop The Music” at a rally in Chattanooga.

Another one bites the dust! It seems President Trump can’t play any music at his rallies without ruffling feathers. Grammy Award-winning singer, Rihanna is the latest artist to send Trump a cease and desist order for playing her song “Don’t Stop The Music” at a rally in Chattanooga.

Rihanna found out her music was being played when a Washington Post reporter, Philip Rucker, tweeted about it. Rihanna responded saying, “Not for much longer… me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies, so thanks for the heads up philip!”

Rihanna joins a list of many other artists that have been vocal about their disdain with President Trump playing their music at rallies. WHUR previously reported on Pharell’s team sending the President a cease and desist order for playing his song ‘Happy’ at rallies. We also covered the Prince Estate demanding Purple Rain stop being played at Trump’s rallies. At this rate President Donald Trump wont have any music to play at his rallies pretty soon.

Rihanna has been very vocal politically lately. As WHUR previously reportedshe turned down an offer to perform at the Superbowl Halftime show to show support and solidarity to Colin Kapernick.

Rihanna has also been using her social media to encourage others to be politically active and vote. She recently endorsed Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum in an Instagram post.

Today Rihanna shared an Instagram post that showed which states have same day voter registration and said,

It’s ELECTION DAY America!!! The most important day for the rest of your lives…all you have is right now! TODAY!! If you’re tired of complaining about the state of the country and government, get up and do something about it!!! #VOTE … simple!!! You have no excuse, and If you live in any of these states it’s not too late to register today!! C’mon man, LETS GO!!!!!”

Election Day Freebies

Ride sharing apps, food chains and a number of retailers are offering customers discounts and freebies in honor of Election Day.

Contributed by Shawna Mizelle

The importance of today’s midterm elections has been emphasized heavily with celebrity endorsements and substantial media coverage. Ride sharing apps, food chains and a number of retailers are offering customers discounts and freebies in honor of Election Day.

It is however against federal law to offer freebies in exchange for voting. According to United States Code of Laws:

Whoever makes or offers to make an expenditure to any person, either to vote or withhold his vote, or to vote for or against any candidate; and Whoever solicits, accepts, or receives any such expenditure in consideration of his vote or the withholding of his vote–Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”

This felonious crime has caused many companies to change their free offers. The Field Museum in Chicago was offering free admission to those with proof of voting today, but since has changed the offer to free admission to all on today regardless of voting proof. Potbelly was offering a free cookie to customers with an “I Voted” sticker. They have since changed their offer to a free cookie with any entree today and tomorrow.

Here are some of the offers valid in the Washington D.C. area today:

Using Uber you can use the code Vote2018 to save up to $10 on your ride to your voting poll.

Using Limebike you can get a free ride to the polls with the code LIME2VOTE2018.

According to a Lyft blogpost 15 million people were hindered from voting in the 2016 election due to transportation issues.

Lyft is offering up to 50% off prices on rides to polling locations. To get your Lyft promotion code enter your zip-code here.

Capital Bikeshare is completely free today with the code “BIKETOVOTE”.

The car rental service, Zipcar, is offering $20 off of a future trip in exchange for a car rental this evening.

Get free delivery on any order placed on the Blaze pizza app.

Use “IVOTED2018” at checkout for 10% off your Baked by Melissa order.

Get free chips and queso with any California Tortilla order today when you say, “I voted.” Twin Peaks has the same offer with your voting sticker.

Corner Bakery Cafe is offering free coffee with any purchase and your voting sticker.

Krispy Kreme reward members can get two dozen donuts with an email coupon today and tomorrow.

Your first beer today is $1 at participating Miller’s Ale House locations tonight.

Show proof of your vote at the Modcloth tomorrow store and receive a Modcloth tote bag as well as a special edition pin.

Shake Shack is offering free fries with any purchase when you show your voting sticker or use the code “ivoted” when ordering on the app.

Disney, Thank You For An EPIC Disney Cruise Vacation Experience!

I have to tell you about my spectacular journey on the Disney Cruise! There were so many highlights… but, let me try to narrow down a few…

I have to tell you about my spectacular journey on the Disney Cruise! There were so many highlights… but, let me try to narrow down a few:

Let’s start with the food! Or maybe I should start with the service! Everyone made me feel as if I was the most important person on the ship. This was the case for the entire time I was aboard the Disney Dream. There was obviously no shortage on delicious food! From the morning breakfast buffet, to the fine dining rooms, the food was exceptional.

Now to the fun of it all. I noticed this water ride that went around the top It changed my world to take a splash down the Aqua Duck! It takes water slide to the next level..as you take a water tour around the top of the ship… Of course once was nowhere near enough! So, I went back for more.

On costume night, I channeled my inner Betty Boop, while my friend CC was the first Mrs. Incredible wearing braids. She rocked it! Speaking of dressing up, we all pulled out our best pirate gear for the Pirates of The Caribbean party that ended with fireworks! We danced the night away on the top deck!

And, were we on Broadway? It surely seemed like it. From the Golden Mickeys, to Believe, to my favorite of all time, Beauty & The Beast! Wow! Having an opportunity to go backstage, meet many of the cast members, and walk the catwalk with some of the cast members was the highlight of my entire cruise. I even wore one of the most extravagant headdresses in the show. I felt like a Show Girl! 😉

When we arrived on the island of Castaway Cay, I was captivated by the white sandy beaches! the crystal clear, aquamarine water was calling my name! Yes, I had to take a dip in the ocean…then became a beach bum… While it was fun seeing all the kids have fun on the cruise, it was nice to get away to the adults only beach on Castaway Cay.

Thanks for following our posts on Instagram @WHURFM and @AngelaStribling! #FollowMyDisneyCruise

Singer and songwriter, R. Kelly, has been the center of sexual misconduct and abuse allegations since his 1994 marriage to the late Aaliyah Haughton (who was only 15 at the time of the marriage). Kelly’s marriage to Houghton was annulled in 1995 and he remarried in 1996. He then married professional dancer, Andrea Kelly. Andrea was married to R. Kelly from 1996-2009, and faced plenty allegations during this time as well. Following the divorce Andrea filed a protective custody order, but was never vocal about the reasons behind the split. Andrea Kelly recently shared explicit details of the violence she went through during her marriage to R Kelly on ABC’s talk show, The View.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFpcvwPrbR8

The stories she told ranged from mental abuse like degradation to physical abuse such as being hog-tied. Andrea also recalled of a time she thought she was going to die in the back of a Hummer. Andrea recalled, “I thought oh my God, I’m gonna die in the back of this Hummer and he’s going to drive off with my body in the backseat and nobody’s going to know.”

Andrea said she broke her silence because she wanted to bring validity to other women’s stories. She went on to say, “If I could come forward and say you know what it’s true because I’ve been through it… and the things that these women are saying they would not know my life if they had not been through it too.”

This wasn’t the first time Andrea has spoken about her marriage to Kelly. She also appeared on Sister Circle in June and talked about her abuse. After sharing on The View she was victim shamed and her children were bullied following her interview.

The View said they reached out to R Kelly’s management team about the domestic abuse allegations and they had no comment. R Kelly has been accused of child pornography, kidnapping, running a sex cult, domestic abuse and more by numerous victims as well as members of their family. R Kelly addressed the many allegations in a 19 minute long song awkwardly titled “I Admit“. Among other things in the song he says, “I admit I (expletive) with the ladies that’s older and younger ladies. But tell me how they call it pedophile because of that?”

Amazon Increases Hourly Wage To $15/Hour Starting Next Month

“We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we want to lead,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and CEO.

NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon, which has faced political and economic pressure to raise pay for thousands of employees, is boosting its minimum wage for all U.S. workers to $15 per hour starting next month and said it will push for an increase in the federally mandated minimum wage, which now stands at $7.25 per hour.

“We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we want to lead,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and CEO.

The wage hike will go into effect as Amazon hires more than 100,000 holiday workers to pack and ship goods in its warehouses. Employers are facing the tightest job market in nearly two decades, making it more difficult to lure workers who have a lot more choices about taking a job than just a year ago.

Amazon said Tuesday that the wage hike will benefit more than 350,000 workers, which includes full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal positions. Employees at Whole Foods, the upscale grocery chain Amazon owns, will get the same pay hike. Amazon’s hourly operations and customer service employees, some who already make $15 per hour, will also see a wage increase, the Seattle company said.

Amazon has faced criticism from labor rights groups and others over pay and working conditions at its warehouses. One of its harshest critics is U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. His Twitter account, which has nearly 9 million followers, frequently points out the disparity between Amazon’s median employee pay and Bezos’ vast fortune.

Sanders congratulated Bezos Tuesday for “doing exactly the right thing.”

Despite its domination, Amazon shares one potential hurdle that is growing higher for almost all employers big and small: a tightening labor market. The unemployment rate is 3.9 percent, near an 18-year low. The most recent statistics from the U.S. Labor Department showed that in August, the pace of hiring rose again and wages grew at their fastest pace in nine years.

Average hourly pay jumped 0.4 percent in August and increased 2.9 percent compared with a year earlier. That’s the fastest annual gain since the Great Recession ended. There are now more available jobs than unemployed people, the first time that has happened in the 18 years that data on open jobs has been tracked.

As competition among companies for qualified workers grows more intense, they are increasingly willing to pay more wages.

Raising starting wages isn’t just good publicity for Amazon and other major retailers. It helps them save money that would be lost as talent leaves for higher pay elsewhere.

Both Walmart and Target have said their businesses have benefited from their moves to raise wages. Walmart has seen lower turnover among its employees and has said that its higher pay helped improve customer experience in the stores. Walmart is currently the largest private employer in the nation, with a workforce topping 1.5 million employees.

Target said that it has seen a better pool of applicants after its moves to hike hourly pay.

Target’s CEO Brian Cornell recently said that the number of job applicants rose by 60 percent in the days after Target increased its minimum wage by $2 to $11 per hour last year. This past spring, it raised its starting hourly pay for its workers to $12. Target said last September that it planned to raise hourly pay to $15 by 2020. With Tuesday’s move, Amazon has done that already.

Pay for warehouse workers at Amazon can vary by location. It was offering at least $12.25 an hour in Omaha, Nebraska, $13 in Baltimore and $16.50 in New York, according to recent job postings. The median pay for an Amazon employee last year was $28,446 worldwide, according to government filings, which includes full-time, part-time and temporary workers.

In two decades the company expanded far beyond its bookseller beginnings, combining its world-spanning retail operation with less flashy but very profitable advertising and cloud computing businesses. Last month it became the second publicly traded company to be worth $1 trillion, hot on the heels of Apple.

But corporate profits in the U.S. are booming, and that wealth isn’t being spread out nearly fast enough for many. Amazon earned $2.53 billion in just the second quarter alone.

On Tuesday, fast food workers in Michigan are going to kick off a series of protests in the Midwest and elsewhere around the country in support of unions and a $15 minimum age.

Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, said Tuesday that while Amazon’s wage hike is a politically savvy move, it’s also a change made out of economic necessity. With a healthy U.S. economy, Americans looking for work have an increasing number of job options, so Amazon has to find ways to entice people to join its company.

Amazon is also increasing wages in some areas outside the U.S. The company announced that the minimum wage will be 10.50 pounds an hour in London and 9.50 pounds in other parts of the UK. The increases will include 17,000 Amazon employees as well as 20,000 seasonal workers.

Amazon.com shares were little changed Tuesday, but they have been among the best performers in the S&P 500 this year, with a gain of about 70 percent, compared with a gain of 9 percent for the S&P.

The company is the second-most valuable in the index after Apple Inc., and its market value briefly reached $1 trillion on Sept. 4.

FBI agents interview second Kavanaugh accuser…

The FBI has interviewed the second woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct. Deborah Ramirez says that in college at a party at Yale that Kavanaugh exposed himself to her.

Ramirez has provided a list of names to agents that can back up her story. On Friday, in a surprise move President Trump ordered an one week long FBI probe into the claims agaisnt his nominee. As of this morning Dr. Christine Blasey Ford said she had not been contacted by agents. Sources are also stating that there are no plans to interview a third accuser who claims Kavanaugh was present at a high school party were she was gang raped.

This morning WHUR has learned that Chad Ludington, a former college roommate of Kavanaugh has contacted officials and wants to speak to them about him. Ludington says that Kavanaugh was not honest in his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee about his drinking and behavior in college. The FBI probe into Kavanaugh is to be no more than a week long. Some say the FBI is being told they have a limited scope that they are able to look into. The White House denies that claim.

Tupac’s Estate Regains Ownership Of Unreleased Music

A court ruled Entertainment One must pay over six figures for royalties from the rapper’s posthumous releases and all the unreleased recordings will go back to the estate. Death Row Records initially owned the rights to Tupac’s music, then sold them to Entertainment One in 2006.

The estate of Tupac Shakur had a major victory last week, winning a six-figure settlement over unpaid royalties.

Back in 2013, Tupac’s late mother Afeni Shakur sued Entertainment One claiming they failed to pay Tupac’s estate royalties worth seven figures for 2007’s Beginnings: The Lost Tapes. The estate also sued for the ownership of the master recordings for all of Tupac’s unreleased music.

Shakur, the former Black Panther who inspired the work of her son, rap icon Tupac Shakur, and fostered his legacy for decades after he was slain, died Monday, May 2, 2016, of an apparent heart attack, authorities said Tuesday. Chadwick Boseman Delivers Howard University’s 2018 Commencement Speech

“When you have reached the Hilltop and you are deciding on next steps, you would rather find purpose than a career. Purpose is an essential element of you that crosses disciplines.”

https://youtu.be/RIHZypMyQ2s

Written by Howard Newsroom Staff

Howard University alumnus and award-winning actor Chadwick Boseman spoke to graduates about the significance of making it to the top of the Hilltop during the Howard University 2018 Commencement Convocation.  In front of an audiences of more than 8,000 family and friends, Boseman encouraged the graduates to not only exceed in their next steps, but also strive to achieve their life’s purpose.

“When you have reached the Hilltop and you are deciding on next steps, you would rather find purpose than a career. Purpose is an essential element of you that crosses disciplines,” said Boseman.

He applauded the members of the class of 2018 for climbing up their academic slopes and making it up the Hilltop.

“The Hilltop represents the culmination of the intellectual and spiritual journey you have undergone while you were here,” said Boseman. “Each of you have had your own difficulties with The Hill, but it’s okay because you made it on top. Sometimes, you need to feel the pain and sting of defeat to activate the real passion and purpose that God predestined inside of you.”

Boseman also declared Alma Mater, “a magical place — where the dynamics of positive and negative seems to exist in extremes.” He referenced an inspirational moment he experienced when meeting the iconic Muhammad Ali on the University yard; highlighting how at Howard, magical moments can happen to give students powerful encouragement on their toughest days.

“I remember walking across this yard, when Muhammad Ali was walking towards me with his hands raised in a quintessential guard. I was game to play along with him,” said Boseman. “What an honor to be challenged by the G.O.A.T. I walked away floating like a butterfly…walked away light and ready to take on the world. That is the magic of this place. Almost anything can happen here.”

A native of South Carolina, Boseman graduated from Howard University and attended the British American Dramatic Academy at Oxford University. Thereafter, Boseman began his career as an actor, director and writer. He starred as T’Challa/Black Panther in the worldwide phenomena Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”

Boseman’s breakout performance came in 2013 when he received rave reviews for his portrayal of the legend Jackie Robinson in Warner Bros’ “42.” He previously starred in the title role of Open Road Films’ “Marshall” alongside Josh Gad. The film tells the story of Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, who graduated as valedictorian from Howard University School of Law in 1933.

This year’s Commencement Convocation marks the commemoration of Howard University’s 150th graduating class. Howard University President Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick said the University’s establishment represents one of the most noteworthy accomplishments in the history of American colleges and universities.

During his remarks, Dr. Frederick discussed how Boseman and his classmates advocated and participated in a three-day protest against the University to dismiss an initiative to transition the College of Fine Arts into the Department of Fine Arts. The protest was unsuccessful in stopping the transition. However, today Frederick, alongside Boseman, announced a campaign to re-establish the College of Fine Arts and launch an Endowed College of Fine Arts Award.

To the Class of 2018, Dr. Frederick encouraged the graduates to be bold as they embark into their chosen careers.

“Don’t stand safely on the sidelines; take risks, learn how to be wrong. It is the best way to learn and grow,” said Dr. Frederick. “Build a culture of generous listening so that others may be emboldened to take risks, too.”

Howard University is awarding 2,217 degrees, including 343 master’s degrees, and 90 Ph.Ds. More than 382 students received professional degrees in law, medicine, pharmacy and dentistry. Howard University has the only dental and pharmacy colleges in the District of Columbia. The 2018 graduates represent 39 states and 32 countries; 117 graduates are from the District of Columbia.

A Record $140,000 Raised During Helping Hands Radiothon

This year, students will travel to Belle Glade and Florida Keys, FL –> Houston, Beaumont & Port Arthur, TX –> New Orleans, LA –> Chicago, IL –> Flint, Michigan –> Haiti –> Ghana –> St. Croix –> Puerto Rico –> St. Maarten –> Anguilla.

WOW! Words cannot express how grateful we are to our phenomenal WHUR listeners. Because of your unwavering support, we raised $140,000 during our annual Helping Hands Radiothon. Your generous donations will make it possible to send over 700 Howard University Alternative Spring Break (HUASB) students to 14 cities around the world to volunteer more than 100,000 community service hours to 91 sites.

For more than twenty years, Howard University’s ASB program has been committed to serving communities in need and involving students in meaningful service. ASB connects students to the significance of their education and prepares them to be servant leaders for the nation and the world.

We would like to thank all our generous donors, Suntrust Bank, sponsors, HUASB students, Howard University, WHUR staff, and every single volunteer who helped us pull this event off. You answered the call and because of your hard work and dedication, we’re able to send over 700 HUASB students around the globe to lend a helping hand to communities in need. We cannot say THANK YOU enough.

A very special THANK YOU goes out to the anonymous donor who matched our efforts with a $55,000 pledge. YOU ARE AMAZING!

This year, students will travel to:

Belle Glade and Florida Keys, FL –> Houston, Beaumont & Port Arthur, TX –> New Orleans, LA –> Chicago, IL –> Flint, Michigan –> Haiti –> Ghana –> St. Croix –>  Puerto Rico –> St. Maarten –> Anguilla

The program gained tremendous momentum in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and continued to expand when students refused to be merely sympathetic in the response to earthquake victims of Haiti. In response to the natural disaster, students spent their Spring Break working with orphans and helped rebuild a school in Haiti, launching ASB’s international outreach.

ASB is only made possible each year because of the generosity of individual donors and institutional partners who provide the support and resources necessary to ensure the safety and care of over 700 students domestically and internationally.

Although the radiothon is over, you are still able to donate to this annual community service initiative until the end of March. You can make a donation here.
