The ladies of The ‘Red Table Talk’ are making audiences wait for them to address the infamous Oscar’s slap that took place between Will Smith and Chris Rock.

By Brooks Welch

The ladies of The ‘Red Table Talk’ are making audiences wait for them to address the infamous Oscar’s slap that took place between Will Smith and Chris Rock.

According to The Root, the Facebook Watch talk show returned for Season 5 on Wednesday and welcomed guest Janelle Monae. Right at the beginning of the episode, words flashed on the screen.

“Considering all that has happened in the last few weeks, the Smith family has been focused on deep healing. Some of the discoveries around our healing will be shared at the table when the time calls,” the message revealed. “Until then the table will continue offering itself to powerful, inspiring and healing testimonies like that of our incredibly impressive first guest.”

As revealed by Shadow and Act, the season 5 premiere was taped prior to the Oscars.

Further reported by the Root, as a result of Smith’s altercation, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences shared its decision to ban Will Smith from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years.

“The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” The Academy president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson explained in a statement.

Instead of addressing the Oscar’s slap head on, the ‘Red Table Talk’ episode focused on Janelle Monae, who while a guest on the show, came out as non-binary and shared intimate details about her family, including her father’s drug addiction.

The ‘Red Table Talk’ season 5 premiere is now available to stream on Facebook Watch.

Al Sharpton, Ben Crump Speak At Lyoya’s Funeral

Patrick Lyoya was pulled over by a Grand Rapids police officer earlier this month. He was shot during a struggle with the officer.

(Grand Rapids, MI) — Reverend Al Sharpton says the death of a Black man killed by a white police officer in Michigan doesn’t end today. Speaking at Patrick Lyoya’s funeral, Sharpton said it’s a disgrace that the Grand Rapids Police Officer has not been identified yet by the department. He added it will not stand and called for the release of the officer’s name. Sharpton said every time a Black person commits a crime, their name is broadcast immediately. He asked if it was 2022 in Michigan or Mississippi in 1952. Sharpton said just like people are standing up for those victimized in Ukraine, people need to stand for Patrick who was also victimized. The Reverend said Congress needs to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and added this election year should be a test to see who stands for people of color.

Lyoya was pulled over by a Grand Rapids police officer earlier this month because his license plate didn’t match his car, and was shot during a struggle with the officer. An independent autopsy concluded that Lyoya, whose family came to America to escape violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was shot in the back of the head.

By Brooks Welch

Puppy love is in the air! Sasha Obama and actor Clifton Powell’s son Clifton Powell Jr are a rumored couple.

According to The Cut, last August, the former first daughter moved to L.A. after transferring to USC, and now, she reportedly has a boyfriend. The Daily Mail claims she’s dating Clifton Powell Jr., a commercial director and the son of actor Clifton Powell.

Powell Jr, who goes by the nicknames ‘Cliff’ and ‘CP3’, attended Village Christian High School in the San Fernando Valley. The 24-year-old never made any secret of his ambition for a life outside of sport, writing in his basketball bio that he hoped for a career as a broadcaster.

His mom, Kimberly Powell, reportedly runs a few businesses including an interior design company called ‘whateverUneed Designs’ and a catering company called Chef Kim. Powell Jr. also has a 29-year-old sister, May Powell, who also an entrepreneur and runs her own beauty business called Suga Honey Glam Incorporated

The outlet also reported that both Sasha and her sister Malia, 23, are now based on the West Coast with the older Obama sibling taking a job as a script writer for Donald Glover’s new Amazon project after graduating from Harvard last year. Sasha’s older sister Malia has been dating Brit Rory Farquharson since meeting him at Harvard in 2017.

On Tuesday, former First Lady Michelle gave an update on her daughters during an appearance on the Ellen Show.

She told the host, “They loved the Jonas Brothers. Now they are bringing grown men home.”

“Before it was just, like, pop bands. Now they have boyfriends and real lives,” she continued.

Anthony Anderson Didn’t Expect To Be So Emotional On Set Of ‘black-Ish’ Finale

Emotions are running high for actor Anthony Anderson as ‘black-ish” wrapped the series after an astonishing 8-year run.

By Brooks Welch

Emotions are running high for actor Anthony Anderson as ‘black-ish” wrapped the series after an astonishing 8-year run.

As reported by People, during a recent appearance on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show,’ the actor, 51, opened up about filming the final episode of the hit ABC series, revealing that he wasn’t able to hold back the tears.

“I did [cry]. I didn’t cry as much as Tracee Ellis Ross, though. She cried every day,” Anderson said. “Actually the last day, I think I cried a little bit more than [Ross] did, and I didn’t think it was going to hit me the way that it did.”

Anderson said he thought he was emotionally prepared to wrap the series — but he was quickly proven wrong.

“We knew what the last day was,” he said. “I had been prepping myself for it, and in the last scene on the last day is when I lost it, and it was unexpected for me. I didn’t expect to lose it the way that I did, but that just goes to show how much I love what I do [and] love doing it with the people that I did it with for the last eight years.”

The series was nominated for Best Comedy series four times during its run, reports Shadow And Act.

‘Black-ish,’ premiering back in 2014 with two spinoffs, ‘Grown-ish’ and ‘Mixed-ish,’ follows Andre Johnson (Anderson) the father of an upper class Black family who struggles to ensure his children remember their heritage despite growing up privileged in a predominantly white neighborhood (via Screen Rant).

During the interview with DeGeneres, Anderson said the series was the product of a conversation about what television was missing in terms of representation.

“When Kenya [Barris] and I sat down almost 10 years ago now, we looked at what was missing from the landscape of television for us — he and I as viewers — and we wanted to make an important show that had an impact,” he said.

“We took a page from Norman Lear’s book with ‘The Jeffersons,’ ‘Good Times,’ ‘All in the Family,’ and we wanted to do a show like that — a show that had social commentary, with unapologetic lead characters — and I believe we were successful.”

The final episode of “black-Ish” is available for streaming on Hulu.

MLK Jr. and Malcolm X As Focus Of Disney+ ‘Genius’ Series

National Geographic has announced that season four of the anthology series ‘Genius’  will center around Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X.

By Brooks Welch

National Geographic has announced that season four of the anthology series ‘Genius’  will center around Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X.

According to Deadline, ‘Genius: MLK/X’ will explore the formative years, pioneering accomplishments, dueling philosophies and key personal relationships of the pair. While King advanced racial equality through nonviolent protest, Malcolm X argued forcefully for Black empowerment, identity and self-determination.

With their formidable wives, Coretta Scott King and Betty Shabazz, by their sides, King and Malcolm X became synonymous with the civil rights era and the fight for racial and economic justice. While they met only once and often challenged each other’s views, neither would have been as successful without the other.

The series show runners are Raphael Jackson and Damione Macedon (Starz’s ‘Power’). Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood (‘Love & Basketball’) have joined as executive producers, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

“Malcolm and Martin are staggering icons, and we have been eager to explore the genius of these two very real men in a way that has not yet been seen,” said the Bythewoods in a statement. “We are excited to team up with Imagine Entertainment and 20th Television to reflect their amazing lives and contributions to civil rights and the urgency of today.”

All Clear at US Capitol After Brief Security Scare

U.S. Capitol was briefly evacuated Wednesday after an aircraft came too close. It turns out the plane was part of a military pre-planned flyover to Nationals Stadium.

Washington, D.C. (Wednesday, April 20, 2022) – The all clear has been given at the U.S. Capitol after a brief scare prompted by an aircraft.

The Capitol had to be evacuated for a short time after police thought an aircraft posed a probable threat.  It turns out it was a pre-planned flyover of a plane carrying members of the U.S. Army Golden Knights who then parachuted to Nationals Park.  But Capitol Police were not alerted of the situation before hand.

The alert from Capitol Police sent congressional staffers fleeing from the Capitol and legislative building around 6:30pm Wednesday.

The breakdown in communication between the military,  the Federal Aviation Administration, and Capitol Police has angered some congressional leaders.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pointed the finger of blame at the FAA saying “its apparent failure to notify Capitol Police of the pre-planned flyover Nationals Stadium is outrageous and inexcusable.”

New Details In Death of QB Dwayne Haskins

Quarterback Dwayne Haskins apparently was walking on a busy Florida highway because his car had run out of gas before he was fatally struck by a dump truck

(Wednesday, April 20, 2022) – We now know why Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was walking on a busy highway early April 9th in Fort Lauderdale, Florida before he was fatally struck by a dump truck.

According to 911 recordings released Wednesday, the wife of the 24-year-old Haskins called Florida dispatchers shortly after he was fatally struck, saying Haskins’ car had run out of gas and she was worried because he was not answering the phone.

Kalabrya Haskins was in Pittsburgh and not aware of the accident.  She had called 911 seeking help in locating her husband. “I just want somebody to go in the area and see if his car is there and if he’s OK and if anything happened to him,” she said.  “It’s not like him to not call back.”

The 911 dispatcher had already received calls about the accident that happened around 6am on Interstate 595 near Fort-Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The accident report says witnesses told investigators that Haskins was trying to cross the busy highway when he went into the path of the dump truck. That truck knocked him into the path of a car.  Haskins was also struck by the car.  He died on the scene.

CDC Says Masks Are Still Necessary On Planes, Trains, and Buses

CDC says masking up on public transportation is still necessary.

Washington, D.C. (Wednesday, April 20, 2022) – The Justice Department is moving forward to appeal a federal judge’s order that effectively upended the mask mandate on planes, trains, and buses.

The notice came just minutes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said masking on indoor transportation remains necessary for the public health.

A notice of appeal was filed in federal court Wednesday in Tampa, Florida.  It remains unclear whether the Biden administration would ask the appeals court to grant an emergency stay to immediately reimpose the mask mandate on public transit.

A federal judge in Florida Monday struck down the national mask mandate for mass transit.  The decision prompted a ripple effect with many major airlines announcing face coverings would be optional.  Many local jurisdictions around the country also ended the mask mandates on buses and trains.

The Emmy-winning daytime show ‘The Talk’ has been renewed for its 13th season with current hosts.

As reported by Deadline, ‘The Talk’ has had a somewhat controversial 12 months and a revolving door of hosts. But the CBS daytime series will return for a 13th season, with all of its current hosts, Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Jerry O’Connell, Natalie Morales and Sheryl Underwood.

The outlet also reported that last month, Underwood signed a new multi-year deal to remain on the show. Morales joined as a permanent co-host in October, while former NFL player Gbajabiamila became a permanent co-host in September. O’Connell also joined last year.

In the show’s recent history, the original co-host Sharon Osbourne was fired last year following controversial comments on race and her defense of friend Piers Morgan. Carrie Ann Inaba also left the show last year, as did Elaine Welteroth.

Underwood is the longest serving host of the series, having joined during the show’s second season in 2011.

“It’s always fun when you’re somewhere where you can work with people you love,” she said. “We have the right team for right now. It’s a positive affirmation that we’re going in the right direction.”

The iconic sneaker brand Converse has announced its collaborations with three Black creatives for the ‘It’s Possible’ campaign in celebration of Black joy and to honor Black culture.

Called the “It’s Possible Collection,” the collection was developed by Converse-sponsored WNBA athlete Natasha Cloud along with the footwear brand’s designer Marissa Bynoe and product merchandiser Javon Martin, reports Footwear News.

As reported by Black Enterprise, the creatives were enlisted to craft bold and unique styles that reflect where they’ve been, where they are now, and where they are headed, using Converse as their canvas.

As outlined by Footwear News, Cloud took on the Leather Ox sneaker. Cloud said about the style that she knows that changing your shoes to match your present self is “a way of therapy, it’s a way of vulnerability, it’s a way of strength.”

Delta, American, United Among Airlines Removing Mask Mandates

Masks are no longer required for Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue.

By Brooks Welch

Masks are no longer required for Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue.

As reported by CNN, last week, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extended the mask mandate through May 3. The masking requirement applied to airplanes, trains, and other forms of public transportation. However, Biden administration official says the order is no longer in effect.

As the rest of the airlines, Delta Air Lines says it’s making masks optional, and warned travelers they “may experience inconsistent enforcement during the next 24 hours as this news is more broadly communicated.”
“Given the unexpected nature of this announcement, please be aware that customers, airline employees and federal agency employees — such as TSA — may be receiving this information at different times,” the airline said.
United Airlines said in a statement that “masks are no longer required at United on domestic flights, select international flights (dependent upon the arrival country’s mask requirements) or at U.S. airports.”
Alaska Airlines similarly said face masks are now optional and asked for passengers to be considerate.
Many travelers will be happy to ditch the face coverings, but experts say the mask ruling robs governments of the ability to protect public health, reports NPR. Masks may still be required due to local ordinances.

Google Launches ‘Multisearch’ Feature To Search By Text and Images

By Brooks Welch

Google has announced its “multisearch” feature that allows users to search using text and images at the same time via Google Lens, the company’s image recognition technology.

According to TechCrunch, Google first teased the functionality last September at its Search On event and said it would be launching the feature in the coming months after testing and evaluation. Starting today, the new multisearch functionality is available as a beta feature in English in the United States.

With this feature, you could search for a shirt similar to one in a photo but type that you want it with “polka dots,” or take a picture of your couch and type “chair” to find ones that look similar, CNN explains.

As detailed by Tom’s Guide, you can use Google’s multisearch feature in two simple steps.

1. From the Google app, tap the Google Lens button. From there you can either search for a screenshot on your camera roll or snap a photo.

2. The Google app will list search results. Swipe up and tap the “+ Add to your search button,” typing in your search query. You’ll get a page of results based on your search term and photo.

The outlet also shared the insight that, while Google is promoting multisearch as an e-commerce tool at the moment, multisearch can expand to other areas like cleaning tips, first-aid guidance and other how-to suggestions.

Uber Drops Masks Requirements

The move comes just a day after the Biden administration’s mask mandate for air and public transportation was struck down.

Uber has changed its policy for wearing masks on rides. The ride-share company has dropped its mask requirement for both drivers and customers. “The CDC order requiring masks while using rideshare platforms such as Uber is no longer in effect, and we’ve revised our COVID-19 mask and front-seat policies accordingly,” Uber sent to its customers on Tuesday. Uber also dropped the requirement for people to only sit in the back seat, though encouraged skipping the front by the driver unless a large party would be getting picked up. The move comes just a day after the Biden administration’s mask mandate for air and public transportation was struck down.

Will you still be wearing a mask when you take an Uber? How often do you take an Uber? Is this a safe move from the company?

Angela Simmons’ Ex-Fiancés Killer Sentenced To Life

The man responsible for the murder of Angela Simmon’s ex-fiancé, Sutton Tennyson, has been sentenced to life in prison.

By Brooks Welch

The man responsible for the murder of Angela Simmon’s ex-fiancé, Sutton Tennyson, has been sentenced to life in prison.

As Yahoo! reports, Tennyson was fatally shot outside of his garage in 2018. Williams turned himself in just days later, and surrendered to charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, and murder. Tennyson was 37.

“Justice served today!” she wrote on Instagram, sharing a photo of herself, Tennyson, and their son together. “We got you ! We got him.”

According to TMZ, on April 15, Michael Williams was officially sentenced to life for murder, as well as an additional 15 years for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The outlet also reported that although the couple separated a year prior, Simmons testified during the trial, emotionally sharing how the couple’s now five-year-old child, SJ or Sutton Jr., would grow up without knowing his father.

Before trial, she has spoken openly about the traumatizing event. On an episode of her show, ‘Growing Up Hip Hop,’ Simmons said,“How do you explain to a 3-year-old that they’re never going to see them again?” she said.  “Other than my own way, which is like ‘He’s in heaven, he’s with God,’ all of the great things.”

Recalling the moment, she stated that her child “laid his head in my chest and told me he was sad.” “I never see him emotional,” she continued. “He’s a happy kid and that whole day he was just kind of mopey and sad.”

As reported by People, shortly after the murder, Simmons posted a series of touching tributes to the father of her son.

“Thank you for leaving behind my greatest gift,” Simmons captioned a series of family shots.

“I’m hurting. I’m numb. Thank you for the out pouring of love everyone,” she continued, adding that she couldn’t “believe I’m even saying Rest in Peace Sutton.”

Mo’ Nique, Andra Day To Star In New Lee Daniel’s Horror Movie

Multi-hyphenate and ‘Empire’ alum Tasha Smith recently joined Mo’Nique and Andra Day in Lee Daniel’s new horror film.

By Brooks Welch

Multi-hyphenate and ‘Empire’ alum Tasha Smith recently joined Mo’Nique and Andra Day in Lee Daniel’s new horror film.

The project marks Smith and Daniels’ reunion after “Empire”. She also directed two episodes of Fox drama series “Star”, co-created by Daniels, Outlook reports.

According to Deadline, Oscar nominee Andra Day plays Ebony, the mother of an Indiana family whose children purportedly became demonically possessed in a thriller inspired by an actual case. Smith will play Asia, who is Ebony’s best friend.

The film is based off a true story that first became public in 2014. As reported by Deadline, Latoya Ammons and her three children experienced strange incidents in their Gary, IN, home that grew progressively worse, with the children levitating, becoming violent with one another and speaking in growls and deep voices with no recollection afterward. Skeptics abounded, but the Gary Police Department, Department of Child Services and the local church and hospital all became involved, filing reports that took the supernatural occurrences seriously. Officers, doctors and social workers said they witnessed many of the incidents, including one in which her 9-year-old son walked backward up a wall. The Indianapolis Star covered it closely as the Department of Child Services investigated it.

The film will also feature Oscar nominee Glenn Close, Rob Morgan, Caleb McLaughlin and recent ‘King Richard’ Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis.

Back in January, Deadline also reported that the package closed upward of $65 million, covering the film’s budget and buyouts. Daniels, Tucker Tooley and Pam Williams are producing. It will begin production by the middle of this year.

Legendary DJ Kay Slay Dead at 55 Following COVID-19 Battle

DJ KaySlay passed on Easter Sunday after a battle with COVID.

By Brooks Welch

The 55-year-old New York City “hip-hop influencer and graffiti artist” DJ Kay Slay passed on Easter Sunday after a battle with COVID, reports The New York Post.

His family confirmed his death through a statement released by New York hip-hop radio station HOT 97.

“Our hearts are broken by the passing of Keith Grayson, professionally known as DJ Kay Slay. A dominant figure in Hip Hop culture with millions of fans worldwide, DJ Kay Slay will be remembered for his passion and excellence with a legacy that will transcend generations,” read the family’s tribute. “In memory of DJ Kay Slay, our family wishes to thank all of his friends, fans, and supporters for their prayers and well wishes during this difficult time. We ask that you respect our privacy as we grieve this tragic loss.”

According to The Fader, Slay contracted the virus in December but was said to be in “a recovery state” the following month. Speaking at the time his brother Kwame Grayson told HipHopDX that he was “getting stronger” and was being moved to a private hospital to continue his recuperation.

As reported by Billboard, Grayson, who began his decades-long hip-hop career by making a name under his graffiti moniker “Dez,” released his debut album, ‘The Streetsweeper, Vol. 1′ in May 2003.

The “Drama King” collaborated with Fat Joe, Raekwon and Scarface, the Lox, 50 Cent, Mobb Deep, Black Rob, Craig Mack, The Diplomats, Eminem and 8Ball & MJG among others. The album hit No. 22 on the Billboard 200 album chart in June 2003 and No. 4 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart, with single “Too Much For Me” with Nas, Foxy Brown, Baby and Amerie peaking at No. 53 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart in May of that year.

For years, Kay Slay hosted “The Drama Hour” on HOT 97, on which he interviewed countless hip-hop stars and aired out (or inflamed) beef between rappers.

In a statement on its website, HOT 97 said it was “shocked and saddened by the loss of our beloved” Kay Slay.
“A cultural icon, The Streetsweeper Kay Slay was more than just a DJ, to us he was family and a vital part of what made HOT 97 the successful station it is today,” the station said.

Judge Strikes Down Mask Mandate On Planes, Public Transit

It’s unclear if the CDC will appeal the decision.

(Tampa, FL) — A federal judge is striking down the mask mandate on planes and other forms of public transportation. The judge said the CDC overstepped its authority and declared the rule invalid. It was recently extended through May 3rd due to concerns about a new sub-variant of Omicron. It’s unclear if the CDC will appeal the decision.

Those who sued said the mandate was “arbitrary and capricious” for multiple reasons, including that the CDC didn’t explain its reasoning. The judge agreed with the latter claim, saying “it needed to explain why it acted as it did.”
