Don’t Leave Kids and Pets In Hot Cars

Did you know that every nine days across the United States a child dies while unattended in a hot car? AAA Mid-Atlantic is offering some safety tips and what you need to know to keep your kids and pets safe.

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, June 14, 2022) – As the hot days of the DMV hang over the region, officials are issuing a safety reminder about the dangers of leaving kids and pets in hot cars.

The statistic is alarming.  Every nine days across the United States, a child dies while unattended in a hot car.  Officials say even if you are simply running into the store to pay for gas, it only takes a few minutes for a car to heat up and become deadly to a child or pet left inside.

“In the summer heat, a vehicle’s interior can reach lethal temperatures very quickly, essentially creating an oven, causing a child’s internal organs to shut down if left unattended inside,” said Ragina C. Ali, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “Young children should never be left alone in a vehicle under any circumstances. The same is true for pets. Make it a routine to look twice and check the back seat before you leave and lock the car. If you have to put a reminder note on your dashboard, an alarm on your phone or a stuffed animal in the front seat to remember to take a child out of the car, do it,” Ali added.

Nationwide, more than 1,000 children have died in hot cars since 1990.  That’s an average of 38 fatalities per year.  It is a tragic reminder.  Officials say this tragedy can and has happened to even the best of parents or caregivers who unknowingly leave a sleeping baby in a car.  The end result can be injury or even death. Studies have shown about 56% of child hot car deaths were caused by adults forgetting the children and 26% of victims were playing in an unattended vehicle. Heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash-related fatalities for children 14 and younger.

Some scary statistics:

  • To date, 4 children have died from vehicular heatstroke in 2022, according to KidsandCars.org.
  • Vehicle heatstroke claimed the lives of 23 children in 2021, 26 children in 2020 (pandemic year) and53 children in 2019.
  • A child’s body heats up three to five times faster than an adult’s body.
  • A child can die of heat stroke on a 72-degree day.
  • A car can heat up by 20 degrees in as little as 10 minutes and become deadly.
  • On a 95-degree day a car can heat up to over 180-degrees.
  • The seats can reach 162 degrees (temperature for cooking ground beef).
  • At 104 degrees internal organs start to shut down.

AAA Mid-Atlantic Urges Motorists To ACT To Prevent A Hot Car Tragedy:

  • AAvoid heatstroke by never leaving a child in the car alone, not even for a minute. Always lock your car and never leave car keys or car remote where children can get to them.
  • CCreate electronic reminders or put something in the backseat you need when exiting the car – for example, a cell phone, purse, wallet, briefcase or shoes. Make it a habit to CHECK the back seat EVERY time you exit the car.
  • TTake action and immediately call 9-1-1- if you notice a child unattended in a car.

When it comes to heatstroke, animals are also at risk. Leaving them in a vehicle while you run into a store, take a break at a rest stop during a family road trip or for any other reason, can have deadly consequences. Make no mistake – just because your pet can’t tell you they are in distress, doesn’t mean they aren’t. Animals left in hot cars can face irreversible organ damage, heat stroke, brain damage and, in extreme cases, death.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs and cats can include:

  • Panting
  • Excessive drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Reddened gums and tongue
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Wobbly, uncoordinated movement

Animals are also at a more severe rate of risk when they have factors like age (very young, very old), obesity, poor heart/lung conditioning, are a short-nosed, flat-faced breed, or have a thick hair coat.

More Kids On The Way For Nick Cannon?

Are more kids on the way for Nick Cannon? It certainly seems like it.

The media mogul confirmed in a recent Lip Service podcast interview, “Let’s just put it this way… the stork is on the way.”

Cannon has been in the news a lot lately for fathering multiple children. He shares a set of twins with singer and icon, Mariah Carey and another set with Abby De La Rosa.

He previously announced in January that he was already expecting his 8th child.

Cannon explained earlier this month in an interview with Men’s Health that although he is a father of many he is still present in all of his kids lives.

“Contrary to popular belief, I’m probably engaged throughout my children’s day, more often than the average adult can be,” Cannon said. “If I’m not physically in the same city with my kids, I’m talking to them before they go to school via FaceTime and stuff. And then when I am [in the same city, I’m] driving my kids to school, like making sure I pick ’em up. All of those things, making sure [I’m there for] all extracurricular activities. I’m involved in everything from coaching to having guitar lessons with my daughter every week.”

Average U.S. Gas Price Nearly At $5 Per Gallon

For the 10th consecutive day, gas prices have reached a new all-time record – nearly topping $5 a gallon in the U.S. According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gas in the U.S. is $4.97.

GasBuddy.com’s Patrick De Haan expects that average to top the $5 mark by Friday. According to GasBuddy.com, DC gas is already averaging over $5.

The most expensive gas is in California, with an average price of $6.40 per gallon.

Georgia has the lowest prices, at ‘only’ $4.40 per gallon.

Although consumers are hurting at the pump, President Joe Biden recently said there was nothing he could do to bring gas prices down in the short term.

How have you had to adjust to account for these gas prices?

Family Travel Insurance Might Save Your 2022 Trip Budget

Before you book your next trip make sure it includes travel insurance. Imagine booking a trip you have been dying to take for a year only to cancel at the last minute because someone got Covid or you had a family emergency. This is where travel insurance comes in. There are four common types of travel insurance: Medical Emergency evacuation and repatriation Trip cancellation and delay Cancel for any reason Much like car insurance, travel insurance will cover various issues but you have to ask questions and yes you may pay more. One common misconception about travel insurance is that it will cover all changes and cancellations. As with any insurance purchase-ask questions and do your homework. Have you ever cancelled a trip at the last minute after everything was paid for?

Maryland State Police Warn Parents of Scam Involving Sexual Extortion of Minors

The Maryland State Police Department is reminding parents to stay vigilant of scams online involving minors.

The MSPD said in a news release on Tuesday that the department has received multiple reports of minors being contacted via social media under a guise of romantic interests.

“As the chats progress, the suspect user will request sexually illicit photographs of the minor, and might even send photographs back to the minor in return.

If a minor sends a sexually illicit photograph of themselves to the suspect account, the suspect user will proceed to demand the minor send them money, typically in the form of gift card and prepaid credit card numbers that are readily available at most stores,” the news release said.

Threats are then made to the minor that if they don’t send the money, the illicit photos will be shared online with the minors family and friends.

Parents are advised to educate their children on online safety, review online history and place computers in common areas.

Public Pools Struggle With Lifeguard Shortage

Summer’s here, which means public swimming pools are open for business – if they can find enough lifeguards, that is.
A shortage of lifeguards is forcing public pools across the country to cut their hours or even close down.
Why are lifeguards in short supply? The pandemic led to many lifeguard training programs to be canceled or postponed – and also meant that many lifeguards saw their certification expire and didn’t bother to renew it.
A ban on temporary work visas during the Trump administration also had an impact, as many lifeguard candidates would travel to the U.S. from Eastern Europe.
Has your local pool cut its hours? Ever work as a lifeguard?

Malomine claims Nene posting photos of him caused her to suffer emotional distress, mental anguish and a loss of affection. Nene began dating Nyoni after the death of her late husband Gregg Leakes. Gregg passed away from a battle with cancer.

As odd as this may sound, in the state of North Carolina where the couple was married and in 7 other states a person can sue a spouses extramarital partner for alienation of affection. Malomine is seeking $100,000.

According to CNN, Wyatt was a teen when she hit stardom. Her first major song was a duet with Avant “My First Love,” which was a cover of a 1983 hit song by René and Angela. Wyatt was also a cast member on TV One reality show “R&B Divas: Atlanta.”

Wyatt also shared issues that she faced during her pregnancy. “My husband & I made the decision not to accept the Medical Specialist’s suggestion to terminate our baby early despite the positive trisomy 13 test results. We appreciate and thank God for all of the Dr’s in the medical field. However, I can’t stress enough to all mothers & couples, when the Dr gives you life changing information about your unborn child …. pray about it, use faith & follow your spirit before making ANY final decision. We believed the report of the Lord and after holding our beautiful healthy baby boy Ke’Zyah & looking into his eyes, I’m glad we did. 😍,” she wrote.
