Gas prices continue to climb in the DC-metro area and so does Metro ridership.
If you are a driver, hearing that gas prices are rising dramatically is no surprise. While accounting for inflation, the daily average cost of gas in D.C. was higher Monday than it has been in the past seven years. The cheapest gas in the capital was $4.09 a gallon but the most expensive cost around a dollar more, according to GasBuddy a web based company that tracks gas prices.
GasBuddy says filling your tank costs almost 46 cents more per gallon than it did a month ago. The D.C.-area gas prices reflect the national increase in the cost of gasoline. Those high gas prices may be helping Metros’s ridership.
As gas prices climbed across the D.C. region in early March, more people hopped on Metro trains and buses, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Transit officials say folks riding Metro-bus and rail more than doubled in March of 2022 compared to the same time last year. Metro-bus ridership is up near 60 percent. Rail travel jumped 124 percent compared to March of 2021.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Thursday named Karine Jean-Pierre to be the next White House press secretary, with incumbent Jen Psaki set to leave the role next week.

Biden is also bringing back longtime Democratic strategist Anita Dunn as his senior adviser. She had served in the Biden White House last year for several months after Biden was sworn into office.
“Karine not only brings the experience, talent and integrity needed for this difficult job, but she will continue to lead the way in communicating about the work of the Biden-Harris Administration on behalf of the American people,” Biden said in a statement praising Jean-Pierre, who has served as Biden’s principal deputy press secretary since Inauguration Day.

Psaki, who leaves the White House on May 13, praised her successor, noting the significance of the history-making appointment.
“She will be the first black woman and the first openly LGBTQ+ person to serve as the White House Press Secretary,” Psaki said. “Representation matters and she will give a voice to many, but also make many dream big about what is truly possible.”

“I am honored and humbled to be returning to my Alma Mater, Howard University, to deliver this year’s Commencement address to the graduating Class of 2022 and their families,” said Henson. “Returning to Howard always feels like coming home, and I cannot wait to share this incredible moment with Howard students as they prepare to take the next step in their journeys to success.”
WASHINGTON – Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick, president of Howard University, announced today that alumna and Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actress, filmmaker, philanthropist and entrepreneur Taraji P. Henson will serve as the 2022 Commencement orator during the 154th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 7, 2022. Henson, who was recently appointed by President Joe Biden to join the White House HBCU Initiative advisory board, will address the Class of 2022 and their families, University trustees, officers, faculty, staff and alumni. Howard University will confer upon Henson the honorary doctorate of humane letters.
“It is with great pleasure that the Howard University community will welcome alumna Taraji P. Henson back home to deliver the 2022 Commencement address,” said Dr. Frederick. “An accomplished actress and fierce champion for HBCUs and the African American community at large, Ms. Henson exemplifies the University tenets of excellence in truth and service. We could not be more excited to have her join us in celebrating the graduating Class of 2022.”
Henson is a 1995 graduate of what is now Howard University’s Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts. She is an award-winning actress, producer and director, a best-selling author, and a noted philanthropist and advocate of mental health services in the African American community through her foundation, the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation. She launched her foundation in 2018 to work toward eradicating the stigma around mental health issues in the African American community. The foundation, named in honor of her father, who suffered mental health challenges without resources or support, provides access to localized and Black culturally competent therapy resources sourced through a network of clinicians, service providers, counselors and thought leaders.
Henson holds numerous industry awards and nominations for her on-screen roles. In 2016, she was praised for her starring role as Katherine Johnson in the critically acclaimed drama film “Hidden Figures,” for which the cast received a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. In 2015, she began starring as Cookie Lyon in the Fox drama series “Empire,” for which she won a Golden Globe Award, received three Emmy nominations, won three BET awards, and became the first African American woman to win a Critics Choice Television Award for best actress in a drama series.
In 2005, Henson played opposite Terrance Howard in “Hustle & Flow,” for which the cast received a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. She also received nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie for her starring role in the Lifetime Television film “Taken from Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story” in addition to Academy Award, SAG Award and Critics Choice Award nominations for best supporting actress for her performance in David Fincher’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” Henson has won numerous NAACP Image Awards for performances in television series and motion pictures, most recently for her performance as Miss Hannigan in NBC’s “Annie Live!” in 2021.
In Fall 2020, Henson launched her production company, TPH Entertainment, with producing partner Christine Conley, with a goal to create projects that challenge audiences to think differently and offer new perspectives and opportunities. TPH Entertainment has previously announced several projects, including “Two-Faced” with Bron Entertainment, which Henson will also direct, marking her feature film directorial debut. They also have “Time Alone” with Alessandro Camon and “Sorcerority,” which they will co-produce with Game Changer Films and Gabrielle Union’s I’ll Have Another Productions.
A New York Times best-selling author, Henson’s autobiography, titled “Around the Way Girl,” chronicled her rise to success, how she overcame adversity and the world-class instruction she received from Howard University. Henson is currently in production on Blitz Bazawule’s “The Color Purple,” where she will star as Shug Avery.
In early 2020, Henson launched her own haircare line, TPH by Taraji, which has won numerous awards from industry titans, including Allure, Essence, InStyle, Good Housekeeping, Marie Claire, SELF and more. She just announced her expansion into body care with BODY by TPH, offering affordably luxurious, clean, unapologetically self-indulgent products in the bath and body care space.

“The Department of State has determined that the Russian Federation has wrongfully detained U.S. citizen Brittney Griner,” a State Department official said to ESPN on Monday. “With this determination, the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger Carstens will lead the interagency team for securing Brittney Griner’s release.”
While officials did not specify the reasoning behind the reclassification, it now brings a sense of urgency to getting the 31-year-old Phoenix Mercury player back into the U.S. “Brittney has been detained for 75 days and our expectation is that the White House do whatever is necessary to bring her home,” Griner’s agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, said in a statement on Tuesday.
What do you think will need to be done to get Brittney Griner back into the U.S.? How much longer do you think she will be detained in Russia?

To commemorate, Washington Wizards’ Bradley Beal is partnering with Hoop For All to refurbish Banneker Recreation Center’s outdoor basketball courts where the nonprofit held its first sporting event in 2012. The new court will reopen with an Opening Day Celebration on Saturday, June 18, 2022.
Hoop For All Foundation is a Black-owned DC-based nonprofit that uses sports programming to provide communities with access to healthcare resources; namely, health care professionals, educational material, testing, and in-patient assistance.
“Thanks to Beal, we have an opportunity to remodel a court that has gradually deteriorated in quality over the years,” shared Vice President Kiera “KB” Thomas. “With this partnership, DC residents – particularly those in Ward 1 – can have a revamped outdoor space to socialize and stay active. Beal is the first of many athletes we plan to partner with. While the start of our journey is in DC, we plan to expand to other cities as well.”
Outside of basketball, Beal is sponsoring Hoop For All for a variety of other reasons. Founded by Howard University alumni, Beal’s brothers and parents went to HBCUs. As a former biology major at the University of Florida, he is highly interested in health and finds ways to support Black-owned businesses. Additionally, the basketball star was drafted the same year Hoop For All was founded and evidently, both parties have continued to leave an imprint on the city.

During the grand reopening, Hoop For All will provide free healthcare screenings and present scholarships to high school seniors attending HBCUs in the Fall. Most recently, Beal took 50 RBHS students on a college tour of Howard University in February 2020 and won the 2018-19 NBA Cares Community Assist Award primarily for his work with RBHS.
Additionally, Hoop For All will host their 10th annual Hoop For Hope Basketball Tournament at Banneker on September 10th, 2022 to support in-need cancer patients and increase awareness around prevention and treatment. Last year’s tournament featured a special guest appearance by three-time NBA All-Star Steven Francis.
Since its inception, Hoop For All has given away over $17,000 towards patient assistance and scholarships. The organization has hosted roughly 17 programs and events and has provided health education resources to over 5,000 DC residents.
“We started Hoop For All in 2012 as Sophomores in our dorms at Howard University and have seen tremendous growth since then,” said President Ayokunle “Ayo” Amoo. “It’s been such a privilege to rally the community together around both sport and health. And to see our impact on patients and their families has been nothing short of amazing.”
The 10-year-old organization has also dedicated its efforts toward mentoring students, athletes, and youth on the importance of health education, physical activity, community outreach, and entrepreneurship.
