Senate Dems Propose New Voting Rights Bill

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell accused Democrats of trying to “federalize elections.”

(Washington, DC) — Senate Democrats are unveiling a new voting rights bill. The measure aims to appeal to progressive and centrist factions in the party, while setting nationwide election standards. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said it aims to counteract efforts in many Republican-controlled legislatures to change how elections are run in the states. Schumer called those efforts “egregious.” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell accused Democrats of trying to “federalize elections.” He called it a “solution in search of a problem.” Republicans insist the state measures are about voting integrity. Democrats claim they’re aimed at restricting voting by African-Americans and other minority groups.

Ex-cops in George Floyd Case plead not guilty

Tuesday’s hearing was held remotely via videoconference.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Four former Minneapolis police officers charged with violating George Floyd’s civil rights have pleaded not guilty to the federal charges against them. A federal grand jury indicted Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao in May for allegedly depriving Floyd of his rights while acting under government authority. Tuesday’s hearing was held remotely via videoconference. Chauvin appeared from a state prison, where he is serving a 22 1/2-year sentence for murder. Attorneys and the judge worked through about 40 pretrial motions, including a request for Lane, Kueng and Thao to stand trial separate from Chauvin. The judge is seeking more written arguments on that issue.

Met Gala Returns In Style

By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — For what was billed as a “mini Met Gala,” Monday’s fundraiser at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art brought out big names and bold fashion. Billie Eilish went full glam at Monday’s Met Gala in an Old Hollywood peachy ball gown by Oscar de la Renta with a full train and plunging neckline. Amanda Gorman was breathtaking in custom Vera Wang with a diamond laurel wreath in her hair, while another co-host, Timothée Chalamet went with casual white silk joggers, short jacket and matching Converse sneakers. Rihanna, ever the Met Gala queen, showed up late in a huge black Balenciaga look. With a theme of American independence, celebrity looks are as far flung as usual.

Dionne Warwick, Star Of A New Documentary, Keeps Smiling

By JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer
The first standing ovation Dionne Warwick ever received was as a 6-year-old, when her reverend grandfather brought her up to the pulpit of the St. Luke’s AME Church in Newark, New Jersey, where she sang “Jesus Loves Me” for a rapt congregation. Warwick’s most recent standing ovation, though, was on Saturday, at the Toronto International Film Festival after the premiere of the documentary: “Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over.” Though the festival has been a more muted affair this year because of the pandemic, the 80-year-old Warwick has made the most of it. Over the weekend, she took over the festival’s official Twitter account and posed with “my Sherlock Holmes,” Benedict Cumberbatch.

Nicholas, Now Tropical Storm, Dumps Rain Along Gulf Coast

By JUAN A. LOZANO Associated Press
HOUSTON (AP) — Tropical Storm Nicholas hit the Texas coast as a hurricane and dumped more than a foot of rain along the same area swamped by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The National Hurricane Center says the storm made landfall on the eastern part of the Matagorda Peninsula early Tuesday and was soon downgraded to a tropical storm. It’s also drenching storm-battered Louisiana and bringing the potential for life-threatening flash floods across the Deep South. Galveston, Texas, has seen nearly 14 inches of rain so far, while the flood-prone Houston area has received more than 6 inches of rain. More than 400,000 homes and businesses were without power in Texas on Tuesday morning. The rain, however, was a fraction of what fell during Harvey.

“J6” Rally Fencing to Return to Capitol

White supremacist groups are expected to take part in the rally.

(Washington, DC) — Tall, sturdy security fences are expected to return to the perimeter of the U.S. Capitol ahead of a large, planned protest on Saturday. The “Justice for J6” rally will protest the arrests of hundreds of people linked to the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Police have said members of white supremacist groups are expected to take part in the rally. It’s not known how large the protest may be. Heavy security around the Capitol is being planned after what happened on January 6th when hordes of Trump supporters breached security and stormed the Capitol.

Blinken Defends U.S.-Afghan Withdrawal In House Hearing

Blinken acknowledged the U.S. has lost some intelligence-gathering capacity without boots on the ground

(Washington, DC) — Secretary of State Antony Blinken is defending the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Testifying in a House hearing, Blinken said it was “time to end America’s longest war.” The Afghan conflict spanned two decades. Blinken noted the prior Trump administration got the ball rolling on a U.S. withdrawal. He argued no one anticipated the rapid collapse of the Afghan government. Blinken said, “There is no evidence that staying longer would have made the Afghan security forces or the Afghan government any more resilient or self-sustaining.”

Blinken called the massive evacuation from the Kabul airport one of the largest and most successful airlifts in history. He vowed to continue efforts to help any American who wants to leave Afghanistan. Not all Americans in the war-torn nation registered with the State Department, so locating them has been challenging. Meantime, Blinken acknowledged the U.S. has lost some intelligence-gathering capacity without boots on the ground. He suggested the U.S. has other ways of determining whether Afghanistan again becomes a haven for terrorists.

Remembering 9/11 Twenty Years Later

We revisit that day with our guests and our listeners as try to put it into perspective.

Twenty years ago tomorrow, America and the world changed.  The way we lived, the way we viewed out place in the world, endured a frightening, seismic shift… after terrorist hijacked four passenger jets.  Two of them crashing into the World Trade Center towers in New York City.  One of them crashing into The Pentagon, the very heart of American military power and one diving in a lonely field in southwestern Pennsylvania.  We all remember where we were, what we were doing on that bright and beautiful, tuesday morning two decades ago.  We revisit that day with our guests and our listeners as try to put it into perspective.

Survey: Avoid ‘Gruesome Details’ when Teaching about 9/11

While the generation born after the events of September 11th, 2001 thinks it’s important to remember the day and honor the people who died, they don’t want to be bothered with the “gruesome details.”
That’s according to a survey by Campus Reform, which asked students at the University of Florida how they think details of 9/11 should be taught. While a majority of them suggested steering away from graphic accounts of the tragic deaths that occurred, another — perhaps more surprising — common suggestion was to avoid blaming anyone for the attacks, Campus Reform reports. A number of the students pointed to American exceptionalism — the idea that the U.S. is more unique and better than any other country — as one of the causes for the attack, according to the surveyor.
Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which were reportedly masterminded by militant Islamist group al-Qaeda. An estimated 2,996 Americans were killed.
Do people who weren’t around to witness the attacks truly understand what that day was like? What were you doing when you first heard the country was under attack?

Witness Says R. Kelly Locked Up Before Sex Assault

Trial is now more than three weeks long.

NEW YORK (AP) — A former radio station intern says R&B singer R. Kelly kept her locked in a darkened room for days before sexually assaulting her while she was unconscious in 2003. The woman recounted the episode for the first time in public on Thursday at Kelly’s New York City sex trafficking trial. She was the latest in a string of accusers to take the witness stand against Kelly since the trial began on Aug. 18. The 54-year-old Kelly has repeatedly denied accusations that he preyed on several alleged victims during a 30-year career.

Nicki Minaj’s Husband Kenneth Pleads Guilty to Sex Offender Registry Issue

Nicki Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, has pleaded guilty for not registering as a sex offender in California, according to PEOPLE.

Petty appeared at a virtual hearing on Thursday (September 10). He now faces up to ten years in prison and a lifetime of supervision. His sentencing is set for January 24th, 2022.

Kenneth nor Nicki have made a comment about the plea. Petty was arrested back in March for not registering as a sex offender when the couple moved from New York to Los Angeles.

Back in 1995 Kenneth Petty was convicted for the first-degree attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl and had to register as a sex offender. He spent four years in jail.

Do you think Kenneth Petty is good for Nicki’s image?

The Ways Travel has Changed Since 9/11

As we look to the 20-year anniversary of the attacks on 9/11 there is a whole generation who has no idea how travel changed after the attack on the World Trade Center towers in New York.

The biggest change was the creation of the TSA or Transportation Security Administration which appeared at airports across the nation two months after September 11, 2001.

Three months after the attacks, Richard Reid attempted to board a plane with explosives in his shoes, this ushered in the no shoes are belts as you enter security. Liquids of more than 3.4 ounces also couldn’t go through airport security.

Of course, all the new additions for security have resulted in longer lives, no gate send-offs, airline consolidations, and a greater appreciation of air travel.

What has been the biggest change about travel for you since the 9/11 attacks?

Ground Zero Rebuilding Still Unfinished, 20 Years Later

By KAREN MATTHEWS Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — Even after two decades, the work to rebuild the World Trade Center complex after its destruction in the Sept. 11 attacks is still incomplete. While the memorial plaza and several towers at the site have been finished for years, construction is ongoing at a planned performing arts center and at a church being built to replace the only house of worship destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001. Work has barely begun on two planned skyscrapers, including one that will be among the city’s tallest buildings.

By DAVID BAUDER AP Media Writer
NEW YORK (AP) — Judge Judy Sheindlin will return to television on on November 1 with “Judy Justice,” a new show where she will arbitrate cases on the little-known IMDb TV, a free streaming service offered by Amazon. It will put the tart-talking judge in competition with herself, since CBS Media Ventures is still selling syndication rights to reruns of the old ‘Judge Judy’ show. That court show’s success made  Sheindlin widely considered the highest paid star in television but her ending with CBS after 25 years was rocky. Based on a picture, she’ll have a new red robe on ‘Judy Justice.’ Her law clerk granddaughter, Sarah Rose, will be an analyst on the new show.

Federal Mandate Takes Vaccine Decision Off Employers’ Hands

By BARBARA ORTUTAY Associated Press
Larger U.S. businesses won’t have to decide whether to require their employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19 — it’s now federal policy, although some important details remain to be worked out. President Joe Biden announced sweeping new orders Thursday requiring employers with more than 100 workers to mandate immunizations or offer weekly testing. Large swaths of the private sector have already stepped in to mandate vaccinations for at least some of their employees. But the U.S. is still struggling to curb the surging delta variant that is killing thousands each week and jeopardizing the nation’s economic recovery.

Post-Ida Recovery In New Orleans: Beer And Beignets Are Back

By STACEY PLAISANCE and JAY REEVES Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans is showing signs of making a comeback nearly two weeks after Hurricane Ida blasted coastal Louisiana. Supply trucks are once again delivering beer on Bourbon Street. And the landmark Cafe Du Monde is serving fried pastries covered with white sugar even though not many people are around to eat them. Nearly all of the power is back on, and gasoline is easier to find. Other parts of Louisiana are still struggling with massive power outages. A state agency says more than 270,000 homes and businesses remain without electricity. But only a few thousand power customers with severe damage remain in the dark in New Orleans.

Black Women and Pregnancy Deaths

Why are the numbers for black women remaining so high?

This is a difficult but very necessary conversation for black women in the District who are pregnant or who may become pregnant.  The statistics for pregnancy-related deaths remain heartbreakingly high.  Black women make up 95% of them.  The lion’s share, 60%, are in wards 7 and 8, east of the Anacostia river.  These are not new numbers. But what is new is that the numbers are not changing, not improving.  Why is that and what can be done about it?  Ahead of DC Mayor Muriel Bower’s Maternal & Infant Health Summit… we’re discussing this topic.

Tidal Enters “Dinner With Jay-Z” Chat & Gives Its Choice

There has been a trending topic on Twitter that has the Twitterverse divided, which would you rather have, dinner with JAY-Z or half a million dollars?

JAY-Z’s streaming platform Tidal decided to weigh in on the debate on its official Twitter page, but before their choice was revealed they re-tweeted several memes including one that shows Jay eating with his daughter, Blue Ivy. The caption read: “So why you ain’t take the $500K?”

After a few laughs from users, Tidal gave its two cents, “Take the $500K.” Many users were still divided after Tidal’s comment as some feel you could gain universal wisdom from the businessman and music mogul.

Others felt that the $500K would be enough to propel them on their way to a billion-dollar lifestyle that would afford them the chance to meet JAY-Z.
