Jussie Smollett Returns To Court Over Conflict Of Interest

Over a year has passed since Jessie Smollet has been in court regarding to a case of a fake hate crime. The former Empire star allegedly payed two brothers to stage an attack against him.

The recent court appearance had to do with Smollett’s attorney, Nenye Uche, talking to the brothers.It’s unclear what was allegedly said but USA Today reports the Osundairos claim it was about the case. The hearing was closed with no media allowed so it’s not known what was said in the courtroom.

USA Today also reports Uche denied talking to the brothers but a judge will decide if he can remain on the case.

Gloria Schmidt Rodriguez, an attorney for the Osundairos, said in a statement, “I think enough evidence and proof was laid out today to support our position.”

After initial charges were dropped following hos staged incident, special prosecutor Dan Webb is pressing six counts of disorderly conduct against the 38 year old.

There’s been so much talk about the pandemic that the opiod epidemic has fallen from the headlines.  But those drug-related deaths soared last year.  More than 93-thousand dying from overdoses.  The CDC reporting mostly from Fentanyl.  The African-American community has been hit particulary hard in 2020.  Why is that?  What can be done about it?

Children Killed In P.G. County Town House Fire

HILLCREST HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) — A fire official says three children under the age of 12 are dead after a fire at a Maryland town house early Monday. News outlets report that firefighters were called to a two-story town house in Hillcrest Heights for a report of a fire with people trapped. When they arrived, Prince George’s County fire department spokeswoman Jennifer Donelan says they found flames bursting from windows on both floors. Firefighters found one child dead inside and two others were taken to a hospital, where Donelan says they later died. She says two adults and one child survived. Donelan says an initial investigation did not find anything suspicious. Fire officials and the county police are investigating.

WASHINGTON (AP) — AP sources: Former Montgomery County Police Chief Tom Manger selected to head Capitol Police in aftermath of Jan. 6 insurrection.  Manger retired as chief in the county in 2019 after serving in that position for 15 years. He is the second longest-serving police chief behind James S. McAuliffe, who served from 1955 until 1971.  Manger would replace Yogananda Pittman, who has been servicing as Acting Chief of  the Capitol Police since shortly after the insurrection.

Unsung Civil Rights Shero and Maryland native, Gloria Richardson Dies at 99

Shero and guiding light of the Civil Rights Movement, Gloria Richardson died on July 15th at her home in Manhattan. She was 99. In the early 1960s, Ms. Richardson was unapologetically a leading voice for protests against racial segregation as well as fought for economic justice for Cambridge Maryland’s 4200 Black residents known as the “Cambridge Movement.”

As reported by the New York Times Richardson often received criticism for her outspoken approaches to dealing with segregation, “Unlike many Southern civil rights leaders and despite her organization’s name, Ms. Richardson did not demand a non-violent response. She encouraged Cambridge’s Black residents to defend themselves.”

Richardson graduated from Howard University in 1942 with a B.A. degree in Sociology. After her activism in the Civil Rights Movement, Richardson dedicated her life’s work to advocating for others in the capacity of serving senior citizens as an employee with New York City’s Department for Aging. In later years, she was quoted and recognized as a “Woman Civil Rights Warrior.”

Chrissy Teigen Speaks Out on Mental Health

Chrissy Teigen who has kept a very low social media presence the last few months, recently took to Instagram to speak out about her feeling of loneliness.

Teigen who faced negative backlash after old comments resurfaced, opened up about her mindset in an Instagram post-Wednesday (July 14). The post went into detail about her isolation after she joined the “cancel club” following the resurfacing of her comments toward viral sensation Courtney Stodden in the early 2010s.

Stodden, who rose to fame in 2011 after marrying 51-year-old actor Doug Hutchinson at age 16, accused Teigen of bullying her and sending death threats on Twitter in an interview last May reported BET.

Teigen lost deals with major brands for her cookware and left a voiceover gig with the Netflix show Never Have I Ever, Yahoo Life reports.

Wednesday she took to instagram to say she was depressed.

“I don’t really know what to say here…just feels so weird to pretend nothing happened in this online world but feel like utter s*** in real life. Going outside sucks and doesn’t feel right, being at home alone with my mind makes my depressed head race. But I do know that however I’m handling this now isn’t the right answer. I feel lost and need to find my place again, I need to snap out of this, I desperately wanna communicate with you guys instead of pretending everything is OK,” she wrote.

She continued: “Cancel club is a fascinating thing and I have learned a whollllle lot. Only a few understand it and it’s impossible to know ’til you’re in it. And it’s hard to talk about it in that sense because obviously you sound whiney when you’ve clearly done something wrong. It just sucks. There is no winning. But there never is here anyhow.”

“All I know is I love you guys, I miss you guys, and I just needed an honest moment with you because I’m just…tired of being sick with myself all day. I don’t even know if it’s good to say any of this because it’s gonna get brutally picked apart but I dunno. I can’t do this silent s*** anymore! If you or someone you know has also been cancelled please let me know if there is a cancel club reunion because I could use some time off my couch! Thank u and goodbye I love u,” she wrote.

Colin Kaepernick To Release Children’s Book

Colin Kaepernick is the former NFL quarterback who left the league after kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality. Since then he has made it clear that he will continue to protest racial injustices and help inspire kids.

His newest project is a children’s book called “I Color Myself Different”, which is inspired by his childhood. Kaepernick who is black, was adopted by two white parents when he was young.

“During a kindergarten exercise on drawing families, Kaepernick remembers putting down the yellow crayon he had been using to draw his family and picking up the brown crayon for himself,” a press release for the book reads. “This moment crystallized for him the differences marked by his adoption, and how acknowledging those distinctions could encourage us all to be more accepting of ourselves and each other” the New York Post reported.

The book will be published through Scholastic in April 2022 as a part of a multi book publishing deal.

“Colin’s reputation as a thought leader precedes him, but it was also clear when we met that his mission and purpose were very much aligned with Scholastic’s,” said Debra Dorfman, VP and publisher, Scholastic Global Licensing, Brands & Media

Keyshia Cole’s Mother Frankie Dies Of Overdose

This Monday morning we learn the sad news of Frankie Lons, Keyshia Cole’s mother, has passed away.

In a post made by Cole’s niece, Zayya Henderson, she seems to break the news to the public as she mourns the loss of her grandmother.

“D*** grandma Frankie the call I just got on your birthday . I was just Finna come see you this week I just talked to you happy birthday beautiful and rest in heaven”

The Jasmine Brand Cole’s sister Elite Noel confirmed the news on her instagram story earlier this morning.

Frankie in the past has battled with drug addiction, however she appeared to be making positive strides. While Keyshia Cole was raised by her adopted parents, she reunited with her mother on her reality show “The Way It Is.”

Today would have been Frankie’s 61st birthday. Our condolences to her family and friends during this time.

Friday evening the world learned that The Legendary Biz Markie passed away. He was 57.

Markie’s representative, Jenni Izumi, said the rapper-DJ died peacefully with his wife by his side. The cause of death has not been released.

As news traveled across the globe, heartfelt tributes began to pour in.

Dr. Dre’s Son Curtis Young Lands First Movie Role, Scoring Film Too

Dr. Dre’s son, Curtis Young, is following in his father’s footsteps and will establish himself in Hollywood with a role in the new film, “Charge It to the Game,” which he’s also set to score.

The coming-of-age story is about 4 best friends who are navigating adolescence, Young will play “Kong,” the older brother of one of the friends.

Other offspring of Hip-Hop royalty will also star in the film, Kong’s younger brother will be played by Snoop Dogg’s son, Julius Broadus, and Swizz Beatz’s son, Nasir Dean, will also star and help score the film.

Curtis has been waiting for this moment for a while, he auditioned to play his father in “Straight Outta Compton,” but lost the role to Corey Hawkins.

Tennis Star Coco Gauff Tests Positive for COVID

American tennis great Coco Gauff will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for Covid-19.

(Sunday, July 18, 2021) – The coronavirus will sideline American tennis star Cori “Coco” Gauff.  She announced on Twitter today that she has tested positive for Covid-19.

“It has always been a dream of mine to represent the USA at the Olympics, and I hope there will be many more chances for me to make this come true in the future.  I want to wish TEAM USA best of luck and a safe games for every Olympian and the entire Olympic family,” said Gauff in a tweet.

The 17-year-old is ranked the 25th woman in the world.  The Tokyo 2020 Olympics starts Friday.  There have already been 55 confirmed cases now linked to the Games.

3 Shot Outside Nats Park. Stadium Evacuated

Nats and Padres game rescheduled for 1:30pm today after last night’s match-up was suspended because of a shooting outside Nats Park.

Washington, D.C. (Sunday, July 18, 2021) – The Nationals Ball Park was evacuated last night following a shooting outside the stadium.  D.C. police say suspects in two separate vehicles were firing at each other and hit an innocent bystander outside the park.  The two suspected gunman are said to be in custody after seeking treatment at a nearby hospital.  A female fan is expected to survive her injuries.

Police initially said four people were shot. But that number was revised later in the night.  Fans were sent scrambling in the stadium after hearing the gunshots.   They described shear pandemonium as people rushed to find safety, trying to figure out where the gunfire was coming from.

Fans could be seen running and jumping over seats. Some fans on the lower concourse sought safety in the dugouts.  Park officials encouraged people to stay in their seats.  But many failed to heed that message. 

The game between the Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres was suspended.  It has been rescheduled for today at 1:30pm.

$60k Reward Offered In Shooting Death of 6-Year-Old

Washington, D.C. (Saturday, July 17, 2021) – D.C. police are asking for the public’s help in finding the shooter or shooters in the killing of six-year-old girl Nyiah Courtney.  Nyiah was among six people shot last night in SE at the intersection of Malcolm X Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.  Nyiah died of her injuries.  Five adults survived.

Police are offering a $60,000 reward in the case.  Immediately after Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee made the announcement, Washington Informer Publisher Denise Rolark-Barnes offered $5,000 additional dollars to help catch the gunman. 

Chief  Contee called the shooting senseless and pleaded for the public to step forward to report the killer.  Police are looking for a four-door silver sedan.  Chief Contee says the shooting was a drive-by and revealed patrol officers were just feet away when the bullets started flying.

Mayor Muriel Bowser says more has to be done to get the guns off of the city’s streets. “Somebody else could be killed tonight, somebody else could be killed the next night because too many people are willing to use guns to solve whatever conflict there maybe,” said Bowser.  “This is a six-year-old who is not coming back.  Family grieving.  Little friends grieving.  A community grieving. Our plea for Nyiah is that we find out who killed her.”

Residents in the area say shootings are nothing new for them and they pleaded with the mayor and police chief to do more to close what they called troubled businesses in the community.

Rapper Biz Markie Dead At 57

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Biz Markie, a hip-hop staple known for his beatboxing prowess, turntable mastery and the 1989 classic “Just a Friend,” has died. He was 57.

Markie’s representative, Jenni Izumi, said the rapper-DJ died peacefully Friday evening with his wife by his side. The cause of death has not been released.

“We are grateful for the many calls and prayers of support that we have received during this difficult time,” Izumi said in a statement. “Biz created a legacy of artistry that will forever be celebrated by his industry peers and his beloved fans whose lives he was able to touch through music, spanning over 35 years. He leaves behind a wife, many family members and close friends who will miss his vibrant personality, constant jokes and frequent banter.”

Markie, who birth name was Marcel Theo Hall, became known within the rap genre realm as the self-proclaimed “Clown Prince of Hip-Hop” for lighthearted lyrics and a humorous nature. He made music with the Beastie Boys, opened for Chris Rock’s comedy tour and was a sought-after DJ for countless star-studded events.

The New York-native’s music career began in 1985 as a beat boxer of the Juice Crew, a rap collective he helped Big Daddy Kane join. Three years later, he released his debut album “Goin’ Off,” which featured underground hits “Vapors” and “Pickin’ Boogers.”

Markie broke into mainstream music with his platinum-selling song “Just a Friend,” the lead single on his sophomore album “The Biz Never Sleeps.” The friend-zone anthem cracked Rolling Stone’s top 100 pop songs and made VH1’s list of 100 greatest hip-hop songs of all time.

Markie, who released five total studio albums, consistently booked more than 175 shows a year, according to the rapper’s website. He’s appeared on television shows including “In Living Color

and the 2002 movie “Men in Black II,” which had him playing an alien parody of himself in the film starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.

Markie also taught the method of beatboxing in an episode of the children’s show “Yo Gabba Gabba!”

Reseachers Report Police Officers Treat Black & White Men Differently

Disparity in treatment between Black and White men by police officers was recently reported by researchers this week in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.  Social psychologist, Nicholas Camp from the University of Michigan was the lead author of the new study.  Camp and his colleagues analyzed more than 100 hours of police body cam footage and concluded that officers’ language was less respectful toward Black residents than their white peers.

In a previous study by Camp, when compared with white residents, Black community members were 57% less likely to hear the officer use words such as “sir,” “ma’am” and “thank you” and 61% more likely to hear words such as “dude” and “bro” and commands such as “hands on the wheel.”  

For the new paper, Camp and his colleagues focused not on what officers said, but how they said it.

The scientists analyzed hundreds of audio clips — each roughly 10 seconds long — from routine traffic stops of Black or white men. The researchers filtered out the high frequencies of the sound clips, which essentially rendered the clips unintelligible but left the tone of voice intact. They also masked the drivers’ voices with “brown noise,” so that anyone hearing the clip would not be able to guess the motorists’ race.

The researchers then asked more than 400 people — a diverse group of white, Latino, Asian and Black volunteers — to listen to the clips and rate the officers’ tone of voice.

Across the board, clips of officers speaking to Black men got lower marks for friendliness, respectfulness and ease than those of officers speaking to white men — even though the listeners were not aware of the drivers’ race.

Richard Sherman ‘Deeply Remorseful’ For Actions That Led To His Arrest

(Redmond, WA) — NFL star Richard Sherman is “deeply remorseful” for what led to his arrest earlier this week. Sherman tweeted an apology, saying “I behaved in a manner I am not proud of.” He went on to talk about “personal challenges” he’s been dealing with lately while mentioning he would get the help he needed when it came to mental and emotional health. It comes as Sherman is now facing five misdemeanor charges. They include driving under the influence and resisting arrest. He’s accused of trying to break into his in-laws home near Seattle.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is reversing a Trump-era rule on showerheads that was approved after then-President Donald Trump complained he couldn’t get wet enough because of limits on their water flow. The Energy Department is going back to a showerhead standard adopted in 2013, saying it provides plenty of water for a good soak and a thorough clean. The rule change will have little practical effect because most showerheads comply with the 2013 rule. The Energy Department says the new action clarifies what’s been happening in the marketplace. Officials say that showers that provide the extra supply of water desired by Trump are not easily found. Trump’s complaint was that “you take a shower, the water doesn’t come out.”

NBA legend LeBron James never forgets his hometown of Akron, Ohio.
On Thursday night, the red carpet was rolled out for the LeBron James Family Foundation for an exclusive premiere of “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”
LeBron is starring in the sequel to the 1996 feature Space Jam (with Michael Jordan).
The premiere opened up with a recorded message from King James saying he put a lot of “love” into making this movie.
Families were treated to the movie of course, plus free popcorn, candy, and drinks.

R. Kelly’s Lawyers Allowed To Withdraw Before Brooklyn Trial

A judge granted a request from two of R.Kelly’s lawyers to withdraw from the case.
R.Kelly’s team of lawyers did not get along with the two lawyers who withdrew from the case.
The now ex-lawyers said, as trial lawyers and in the interest of the client we weren’t comfortable professionally with allowing lawyers who have never tried federal criminal cases to have significant trial responsibilities.

Netflix’s Naomi Osaka Docuseries Couldn’t Be More Timely

Naomi Osaka has a documentary out now on Netflix.
It follows her throughout 2019 and 2020.
At one point in the documentary she wonders what it would be like to slow down and press pause.
I think the amount of attention I get is kind of ridiculous. No one prepares you for that.
She notes that unlike other sports like basketball, soccer, football etc, tennis is a solitary sport making it a lonely sport.

Someone wrote on Twitter, Snoh Aalegra is our Sade.
Snoh hopped on Twitter and then again hopped in the comments of The ShadeRoom.
She wrote, there is only one Queen Sade Adu. There will never be another one. This comparison is so unnecessary. Respect the legend.
It appears her gracious comment garnered her more fans as people commented that prior to the post they had not heard of her but based on her respectful response they were going to seek out her music.

Actor Laz Alonso Speaks On The Social Unrest In Cuba [VIDEO]

Actor Laz Alonso, known for his many roles in hit movies and shows like Avatar,  Soul Food, Southland  and Fast & Furious, recently took time to send a heartfelt message to his followers on social media and basically “educate” the masses about the current social climate in Cuba.   Alonso, a DC Native and an alumnus of Howard University, is of Cuban descent and felt it was imperative to address the misconceptions and breakdown what is “really going on” in Cuba regarding the recent protests by Cubans against the Cuban government.

50 Cent had time today!!  Artist/Producer/Entrepreneur 50 Cent recently spoke out against the gun company Culper Precision for creating Lego-Covered Guns.  50 Cent is highly irritated after learning the gun company is selling guns that look like Lego blocks.  “This is not ok, cops will start shooting little kids playing in the park,” said 50 a recent Instagram post (now deleted). “This looks like they’re trying to market guns to kids.”   The company president, Brandon Scott, says that its “Block 19” is “customization for a gun that uses pieces that look like Lego blocks.”   There are lots of people that wish the company to stop making the cases.   The company that creates the official Lego blocks, Lego, has even put out a plea for the company to stop manufacturing the look-alike cases.

Howard U Expands Sean Plater’s Role to WHUT-TV Leadership

WASHINGTON – Howard University has appointed Sean Plater as the new general manager of public television station WHUT-TV. Plater will retain his role as general manager of 96.3 WHUR-FM, which he has led to become the No. 1 music radio station in Washington, D.C.

WHUT-TV was founded in 1980 in Washington, D.C. The station was the first public station in the United States to be licensed to and operated by a historically Black college and university (HBCU). The station is a leader in public broadcasting with a particular emphasis on issues affecting African-Americans and people of color.

“We are looking forward to Sean Plater taking on a larger role and setting the course for WHUT-TV,” said Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick. “Plater is a home-grown talent, and he has been instrumental in shaping Howard’s vision for its broadcasting operations.”

Plater earned a bachelor’s degree from the Howard University School of Communications in 2007. He holds an MBA from the University of Maryland, University College. The Washington Business Journal recently named Plater to its “2021 40 Under 40” list, which honors the next generation of Greater Washington business leaders.

“It’s an honor to serve Howard University in this capacity and to lead two iconic media brands, such as WHUR and WHUT,” Plater said. “I look forward to the synergy that exists between both brands in this evolving media landscape.”

At the helm of WHUT-TV, Plater plans to enhance original content production and to expand the utilization of PBS community engagement resources as well as the implementation of the new broadcast technology NEXTGEN-TV. Plater has led the Howard University NEXTGEN-TV broadcast collaborative over the past year.

Since 2019, Plater has led WHUR as general manager. He has been credited with diversifying revenue streams, reducing expenses, increasing digital content and expanding the sales footprint of the network. Plater has also worked to enhance Howard student engagement across the six radio stations in the Howard radio portfolio. Plater will continue to report into the Office of Corporate Relations led by Debbi Jarvis, Howard University’s senior vice president of corporate relations. Her office oversees the management of WHUT and WHUR.

Plater has an extensive background in broadcasting. At WHUR, he served as deputy general manager from 2013-2018. He has worked in various capacities for other broadcast companies, including SiriusXM and Radio One, Inc. In addition, Plater worked in the academic technologies division of George Washington University and served as the principal consultant for Plater Audio Solutions.

WHUT-TV, Howard Television broadcasting reaches over 2.5 million households in a 60-mile radius. The station endeavors to underscore Howard University’s overall mission in its commitment to excellence, leadership and public service.

The mission of WHUT-TV is to deliver educational, entertaining and intellectually stimulating multicultural and intergenerational programming to the public in the Greater Washington, D.C. region while offering exceptional professional training in television production, engineering and management.

Teens Arrested In Connection To DC Robbery Spree

Five teenagers are now under arrest, suspected of being responsible for up to 19 armed robberies that took place in the District from July 3rd through July 14th.  According to police, four of the teenagers were arrested yesterday when they were found sleeping in a vehicle. Police say they are searching for one adult suspect in connection to car jackings and robberies.

Over a year ago Marlon Wayans signed an big deal with HBO Max that gave him the green light to create a pilot for a show, a stand up special and another multi act special.  His new stand up special, Marlon Wayans: You Know What It Is will hit HBO Max on Thursday August 19th.  The special will explore some of his fears like, outie belly buttons, raising a daughter, dealing with a rebellious teenage son, and the realization his bad decisions tore his family apart.  Are you ready for this?

Group Founded by Stacey Abrams Launches Voting Initiative

The voting rights organization founded by former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, is launching its “Hot Call Summer” campaign.
Fair Fight Action will reportedly begin making a push to educate and mobilize voters of color around two federal voting rights bills.
Fair Fight claims several provisions must be included in any federal voting rights legislation including, protection and expansion of mail voting, reducing long lines at the polls, stopping voter intimidation and ensuring the end of partisan gerrymandering.
The group launched its first phone campaign in June, resulting in 40-thousand calls from voters to senators that month.

Ex-Officer Gets Prison For Beating Black Colleague

A former St. Louis police officer is going to prison for four years.
Randy Hays was sentenced yesterday for beating a Black, undercover colleague during a street protest in 2017.
Hays pleaded guilty to hitting undercover Detective Luther Hall multiple times with a baton and shoving him to the ground even though Hall was not a threat to officers.
Hall says his “outlook on life, people and this thing we call ‘cultural policing’ has forever changed.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate’s top Democrat is backing a bill that would strike down a longstanding federal marijuana prohibition. Proposals to legalize marijuana are nothing new in Congress. But Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is a sponsor of the latest effort. That underscores how a once-fringe idea is now mainstream. The bill would treat marijuana much like alcohol or tobacco, allowing it to be taxed and regulated. States could still outlaw its use. And those under the age of 21 couldn’t purchase it. It would remain illegal to sell significant quantities without proper licensing and authorization.

NFL Has A Plan For The Black National Anthem

The NFL is going to start featuring the Black national anthem before major events this year.
The league will include “Life Every Voice and Sing” as part of the pregam ceremonies for the season opener and will use it for every “tentpole” event going forward.
The league previously featured the Black national anthem before the Super Bowl in February and the NFL Draft in April.

Pharrell Williams announced his Black Ambition and Black Ambition HBCU award winners on Tuesday (June 13).

Black Ambition CEO, Felecia Hatcher, and Williams shared a video of entrepreneurs receiving their cash prizes, which totaled over $1 million.

“Today we celebrate their determination, resourcefulness, and creativity. Because of Black Ambition, the world will be much more equitable,” Pharrell stated. “Black Ambition will continue to create and push for more seats at the table, so that your talent, not your color, determines your results.”

Livegistics was the grand prize winner of $1 million. The Black Ambition HBCU winner was Dosso Beauty, who received $250,000. Nine other entrepreneurs received more than $100,000 and 34 other entrepreneurs were awarded $15,000.

Rick Ross is trying to get in on the “Space Race” between Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Richard Branson.

Ross made a plea to the Amazon founder about wanting to be the first to bring chicken thighs to outer space, specifically “ThighStop” thighs from WingStop.

“Look, Jeff Bezos…We can make this happen…Let’s do this. I just want to be the first person on the moon with thighs…” said Ross.

Metrobus Accident Injures 13

Thirteen people have been hurt after a Metrobus crashed in to a wall in northeast DC this afternoon.  According to DC Fire and EMS, one person was trapped and another was critically injured when the bus hit a retaining wall at 1st and Riggs Road NE just before 3:30 PM. The cause of the crash is not known.

Suspect Arrested For Death Of Naval Academy Mom

Michelle Cummings was in Annapolis to watch her son Trey be inducted into the Naval Academy.

(Annapolis, MD) — Annapolis Police say they have arrested the suspect who allegedly fired the gun of the stray bullet that killed the mother of a Naval Academy member. 29-year-old Angelo Harrod of Annapolis was arrested on June 30th on an unrelated charge.  He has been charged with multiple offenses related to the murder of Michelle Cummings.  Cummings was in Annapolis to watch her son Trey be inducted into the Naval Academy when she was struck by a stray bullet. Police think Cummings was not the target of the bullet.

You probably knew Mary J. Blige has been a force as the queen of Hip-Hop Soul music but did you know her acting career set her on the path to achieving an Oscar first?

Blige sat down with Naomi Campbell last year for her web series, “No Filter with Naomi Campbell” and she discussed her role in “Mudbound,” the 2017 Netflix movie that earned Blige an Oscar nomination.

Mary was the first person to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress as well as Best Original Song at the 2018 Academy Awards, unfortunately, she didn’t win either award, but her Oscar nomination brought in her next role in The Umbrella Academy.

“After I did Mudbound, there was [sic] all these roles coming in for me to play that same type of woman. I said no,” Blige admitted. “I said no, and that’s when I got The Umbrella Academy.”

Babyface and his wife of 7 years, Nicole Pantenburg are getting a divorce.
This is Babyface’s second wife.
Babyface and Nicole share 12 year old daughter Nicole Peyton.


In a joint statement they said, after much thought and with great sadness we have decided to end our marriage. We continue to care and have respect for one another and share eternal love for our daughter.
The statement concludes by asking for privacy.
He was previously married to Tracey Edmonds.

US Overdose Deaths Hit Record 93,000 In Pandemic Last Year

NEW YORK (AP) — Overdose deaths soared to a record 93,000 last year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The government estimate released Wednesday eclipses the 72,000 drug overdose deaths in 2019 and amounts to a 29% increase. Experts say lockdowns and other pandemic restrictions isolated those with drug addictions and made treatment harder to get. Prescription painkillers once drove the opioid epidemic in the U.S. But now it is fentanyl, a dangerously powerful opioid. Overdose deaths in 2020 are just one facet of what was overall the deadliest year in U.S. history, with about 378,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19.
